Dan Acheson The 2002 Winter Olympic Games were full of interesting and enjoyable stories of the many athletes who participated. Because I am in awe of such amazing achievement by young people, I found myself running parallel drum corps stories in my mind while watching the many features presented about Olympic athletes and their struggle to succeed. I was extremely impressed by several of the athletes’ humble acknowledgements of the vast support network of family, friends, and coaches behind their tales of triumph. Despite the controversy that surrounds every competitive event from Little League Baseball to professional sports, the Olympic Games once again demonstrated that the true measure of accomplishment and fulfillment rests in the human heart and soul … not just in the sport itself. Many stories of remarkable achievements will come out of the Drum Corps International experience in 2002. The accounts of the season will most likely include: the young person who has tried out for a corps three consecutive years and finally made it; the corps member who goes beyond physical limitations and endures an entire season; the shy kid from a remote rural town who becomes a soloist; the countless stories of parents driving thousands of miles to see their young adult perform for the last time as an age-out member; and the fan who has no family attachment, but attends 25 shows to support what they believe to be great kids. All these stories may not ever be written, but they will be a part of the 2002 experience. We have heard a great deal over the past several months about astounding levels of heroism. If we support the people behind the stories as mentioned above, our world will never be short of such heroes. As the saying goes, "the essence of the Drum Corps International experience is ordinary kids doing extraordinary things." As spring arrives and we yearn for another exceptional season, I suspect the loving embrace presented by the fans in the stands to the performers on the field will be more special than ever. We are blessed to live in a free society where greatness can be achieved in this type of activity. The 30th Anniversary celebration will be full of special moments not just because of the exciting performances, but also because of the thousands of great people who believe in one another and in an endeavor that enhances the spirit of humanity.

It’s hot – real hot. The excitement is building as your favorite corps takes the field.
They look amazing under the lights. You can feel the emotion and power seeping through their uniforms as they approach opening set. Cavaliers And then the words The The 2001 defending World you’ve been waiting for, Champions, The Cavaliers, Rosemont, are busy preparing for another “On the Field, from...” Illinois, exciting and innovative season. The But wait. It’s only March. Even though the season is right around the corner, it feels like ages until we’ll actually see a drum corps show. Do you need a drum corps fix now? Are you dying to know what is happening across the country? Boy, do we have some news for you!

Straight from the gym floors, corps members share with us their thoughts on auditions, camps and the season to come.
Cavaliers 2002 Drum Major Brandon Barrometti shares his thoughts on the thrilling season to come. “The buzz around the activity right now is that talent and audition numbers are at an all time high, and The Cavaliers are no exception. What an awesome time to be involved in drum corps! Young people from all across the country are coming out to see what this activity is all about. We have a really great opportunity right now to spread the word and help drum corps continue to grow. “More specifically, The Cavaliers are busy producing yet another quality corps that should prove to be exciting and innovative again this year. Camps are running smoothly with the help of a new drum sergeant, horn sergeants and drum majors. One key to our success is the amount of returning members that are able to get back into the swing of things. Also, the rookie talent is absolutely
phenomenal. When we have more people to choose from, we are able to pick the best of the best. Not only are the new members talented, but they all seem very receptive and eager to learn. “Fans should expect even more from The Cavaliers this year. We believe that every year gets better than the previous. Our goal is to constantly move forward, and producing the ‘status quo’ is a step backward. We are again performing original music, written by Richard Saucedo, Bret Kuhn and Erik Johnson. I believe that the best is still to come, and that we are in store for yet another great summer!”
The buzz around the activity right now is that talent and audition numbers are at an all time high, and The Cavaliers are no exception. What an awesome time to be involved in drum corps!
Spirit of Jacksonville State University Spirit of Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, Alabama, learned the first eleven pages of drill at February camp and the horn line will have the entire show memorized at March camp. The corps seems to be ahead of the game this winter, and Jeff Richmond, horn sergeant, wants to tell us more.
The concept is fantastic and the design is well crafted and very well suited to please every type of audience member.
“Camps are going very well. The members are all excited about the direction we are headed this season. The rookies in the corps are exceptional this year. There is a lot of talent and everyone who made the cut has the attitude we look for in a great member. The maturity and devotion of the membership this year makes the entire experience a real pleasure. “This season’s show is very dramatic and entertaining. It symbolizes a passage from darkness into light and is based on David Holsinger’s Easter Symphony. The parts are challenging but very well written. The concept is fantastic and the design is well crafted and very well suited
to please every type of audience member. The show mixes modern and traditional drum corps styles with a fresh creative perspective as well. “Spirit has grown rapidly to be one of the finest musical performance ensembles in the South. This season will be another step forward to creating a product which can be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone for whom we perform this summer.”
Seattle Cascades With an “amazing show” planned and “triumphant members” to perform it, the Seattle Cascades, Seattle, Washington, jump into Division I, welcoming the challenge. Let’s see what Kristine Leone, 8-year vet of the Seattle Cascades, has to say about 2002. “Each year, the music, the show, the staff and the members take me by surprise by making each summer a tremendous memory. I am very excited for the 2002 season for the Cascades. We are Division
Southwind Southwind, Lexington, Kentucky, may be “young” this year, but that is certainly not going to stop them from keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. Jeff Gorring is extremely confident in Southwind’s 2002 season, as an age-out and third year member of the baritone line he definitely has room to talk. Jeff has the following to say about Southwind: “When I entered my second year of marching, I could feel a huge change from a performance and a confidence point of view between the first year and the second. Now, I even feel a bigger change from my second year to my third. I have more responsibility put on my shoulders because I have a lot of people looking up to me. Not only for guidance and showmanship, but also to be someone that they can come to talk to and someone they can always count on. This is a very important role this year for
I now so the pressure is on, but I have complete faith in our staff and members that we will go out there and ‘wow the crowd,’ our favorite thing to do. I am so thrilled to be part of the horn line this year. We have only had two camps, but already I can see the improvement and dedication the members have to our show. I don’t want to give away too much information because as you may know, the Cascades are known for being the best kept secret, but I will, however, tell you
The returning vets this year are as strong as any corps could want, and we are going to set a standard of excellence that the “Yellow Team” has never produced thus far. vets because we are a ‘young’ corps. I’m not talking ‘young’ from an existence point of view, but from a vet to rookie ratio. Some people, when put into this situation, may view this as a negative outlook on the season. I, however, view this as positive. “The new members this year, and there are quite a few, have nothing to compare hard work to. When the staff pushes us even harder than the past three years, I know it, but they don't. They just think
that the music is amazing, the staff is superb, and the members are triumphant. This will be one of the greatest years for the Cascades, without a doubt!’
that this is the way it has always been so they continue to work hard. They are doing a great job so far, and I have already witnessed their ‘want’ to be great. The returning vets this year are as strong as any corps could want, and we are going to set a standard of excellence that the ‘Yellow Team’ has never produced thus far. “From a show design point of view, we are going to be more energetic than the past couple of years. Our music has been arranged great this year, and it will keep the audience on the edge of their seats. Our staff has pretty much stayed the same for the three years that I have marched and I must say that they are some of the most amazing people I have ever met. Our visual instructors, as well, have been telling us how great the show is going to be and I have no doubt about it. They all are truly geniuses at what they do.” continued on page 9

Crossmen It’s only March and the Crossmen, Newark, Delaware and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, drum line and horn line have already established a great relationship. They are embracing their challenging jazz charts, supporting their new members and working hard to take Crossmen to the next level. Drum Major Joseph Kempf says it best in the following passage. “It only seems like yesterday that we left the parking lot in Buffalo. After time rejuvenating and gaining back that winter weight, we’ve had a successful start to what looks to be an incredible 2002 season. Last year allowed the Crossmen an awesome opportunity of growth as individuals and as a corps and added to
We reminisce like war heroes but work diligently for the road ahead. the tradition of years past. The goal for this season is no different. Camps have started out excellent. We reminisce like war heroes but work diligently for the road ahead. We are now guided by a new director that brings years of corps history and experience to us. “The audition process brought great talent from many areas to the corps in
every section, allowing a nice blend of new and returning members. We’ve acknowledged the accomplishments of past members and paid respect to the new members that will become part of the Crossmen family. To insure our new members’ transition goes smoothly, we’ve established a mentor program. Each new member is paired with a vet who will assist them. With the fast pace of drum corps, we hope that this program will prepare and teach the rookies the importance of the drum corps activity and the traditions and reasons we cherish them. The mentors will be a great resource and friend throughout camps and tour. “The drum line has a passion for the music and its complexity. The horn line is using brand new B-flat horns from our sponsorship with Yamaha. The interaction the two sections have established, both musically and socially, will absolutely benefit the corps. The members are challenged technically and are embracing that challenge. They have great respect and faith that their instructional staff will lead them to exceed those expectations. “The show concept is again a jazz theme, a very appropriate choice for a Crossmen show. It’s more demanding than past years and reflects the upward movement the Crossmen have
shown. The title is still being debated. As of now we have a decent portion of the show in our hands and continue to work those selections adjusting bits and pieces that will benefit us later. Visual wise, we have started the marching technique program and are waiting for the chilly northeast weather to break before moving outside. We are excited for the new visual caption head with hopes to parallel the music demand with visual demand. “As for me personally, this will be my fourth and last year in drum corps before aging out. Only my second year with the Crossmen, I am very honored to
accept the drum major position and have had wonderful encouragement from my peers. I have stated that my personal mission statement is to simply promote drum corps — who we are, what we do, and why we do it; to talk to people and make them feel that they are a part of us; to take the fans out of the stands into our ‘world.’ I want people to meet us as members and hear the stories that only those who have marched can ever experience. “Outside of corps each member is patiently waiting for spring, preparing outside life obligations with work and school to be able to focus on only drum corps come May. This corps is ready. This corps wants to continue to give fans the true drum corps experience. We look forward to sharing our experience with you, as only drum corps members can. The winter has been a great start. All that stands in our way now is time.”

There is no doubt that drum corps has undergone change through the years. One thing that remains the same, however, is the member’s love for the activity. This year, we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Drum Corps International. The success of the activity would be impossible without the dedication and hard work of the marching member. Thousands of members had the honor of performing at Warhawk Stadium in 1972 at the first Drum Corps International Championships. Their
Memor thoughts and memories of that evening are so wonderful that they simply must be shared.
1
“Many of us were intrigued with the political maneuvering and alliances that developed after the 1971 ‘Combine’ year. However, as this international organization coalesced and the grand pilgrimage to Whitewater, Wisconsin became a reality we still had no idea of the legacy we would be leaving. I dare say that after the lights were turned off in Warhawk Stadium few of us would conclude that the context of drum and bugle corps activity had been significantly and permanently changed.” — Mark Werlein, Blue Stars Snare
Everybody knew, even then, that this was the start of an important change in the activity…
“What I remember most was the energy around the stadium that night. Everybody knew, even then, that this was the start of an important change in the activity, and from that night on this event would be the most coveted title in drum corps. So, it was very exciting to be part of history being made. Oh, and the bugs were awful that summer in southern Wisconsin!” — Dallas R. Martin, Mellophone, Argonne Rebels
“It was sheer electric to perform in Whitewater at the 1st DCI. I remember the crowds at practice and our warm-ups and reflecting while waiting behind the stadium before going on. Being part of that Blue Star horn-line brings back feelings I won’t ever forget.” — Robert (Cisco) Rivera, Soprano, Blue Stars
“I marched for the Saginaires in 1972 and we went on in prelims right after the Muchacos and played and marched our hearts out. We finished last place and I had the time of my life!” — John Schaefer, Saginaires “Practices between the dorms, traffic jam before the show, thunder and lightning at finale, too many lifelong friends made to list, but etched in our minds, finally a show by drum corps, FOR drum corps. The first, and the start of history.” — Billy Happel, Blue Stars
12
“The Anaheim Kingsmen hit the field and brought the house down. The place went wild! I knew they had won!!!” —Randy Isoda, Baritone, Des Plaines Vanguard
“My fondest memory of that evening was that the crowd became electric at the announcement, ‘From La Crosse, WI, the First Federal Blue Stars.’ The excitement that went through my entire being was life changing.” — Dave Svaleson, Blue Stars “The thing that sticks out in my mind was that at the first DCI, it seemed that all of the corps were on, in their performances. Corps like the Blue Stars and Kingsmen brought drum corps to a new level! The crowds were spectacular, cheering at the top of their lungs for every unit. It was an amazing night!” — Patrick Jones, Snare, Cavaliers
ies
For the corps, by the corps… “I marched with Knight Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps in 1972 and was 13 when Nats came in August and it was all military-style marching then. I must say the innovations and changes that have come to be in the past thirty years are a tribute to the original five who had the vision of DCI and all that it could become!!” — Bambie House, Knight Raiders
972 “The thrill of proudly marching in our blue and whites to our familiar cadence down into the stadium filled with drum corps fans from all over the world brought out goose bumps. Our families were able to make the short trip to Whitewater for whom we performed with a driven energy that would honor them as well as the staff.” — Barb Noyes Plumley, Colorguard, Blue Stars
“We stood on the field that night, after an extraordinary year of sharing and sacrifice, of excruciating pain and soaring exhilaration, of new promises and old traditions. We stood amidst the glow of the lights, the murmur of the crowd, the buzz of the mosquitoes, and the pounding of our hearts. We stood as participants of history in the making, the founding of DCI, and the end of an era. We stood nervous, exhausted, proud, and unknowing — innocently unaware of how much we reflected the very likeness of the young DCI itself.” — Paul Milano, Cavaliers
The excitement that went
through my entire being
was life changing…
“Aging out in 1972 marching in the first DCI in Whitewater was bitter sweet. It marked the end of a 7-year marching career by aging out with the Boston Crusaders. Little did I know what would become of Drum and Bugle Corps back then, and how much of an impact it would have on my every day life. This will mark my 37th consecutive year following drum corps, and I am still making new friends today, the same way I did my very first year. Friends that I will have the rest of my life…As for every marching member that goes through the ranks of his or her corps, they will build and have lasting memories regardless of winning or not winning. For I believe that for every person who has marched in drum and bugle corps, we are winners! Happy 30th Anniversary, DCI, and may you have 30 more glorious years.” — Paul Pizzo, Boston Crusaders

Drum Corps International presents
Echoes Highlights from the world’s best drum and bugle corps By Michael Boo
It’s been 30 years in the making. It is bound to be Drum Corps International's most discussed recording project ever, stimulating discussion and even controversy. It is ECHOES, highlights from the world’s best drum and bugle corps. ECHOES is a collection of five CDs, compiled and produced by legendary recording engineer Frank Dorritie. The collection brings to life the fondest memories of long-time corps fans and provides a fascinating history lesson for recent drum corps converts. Extracted from DCI World Championship performances since the inaugural event in 1972, the several dozen performances found on ECHOES represent many top audio highlights from every corps that has appeared in DCI finals. ECHOES is divided thematically into five CDs: Volume I — Stage and Screen, Volume II — Signatures, Volume III — Jazz Plus, Volume IV — Symphonic Celebrations, and Volume V — Magnificent Marches.

Volume I — Stage and Screen recognizes how the drum corps activity has embraced the music of Broadway and Hollywood, bringing the most memorable tunes to countless fields of competition across the nation between the two coasts that cradle these pantheons of American culture. Tracks include selections from 1972 Troopers, 1973 St. Andrew’s Bridgemen, 1974 Anaheim Kingsmen, 1975 Santa Clara Vanguard, 1977 Cavaliers, 1978 Crossmen, 1979 Troopers, 1980 27th Lancers, 1981 Santa Clara Vanguard, 1982 Madison Scouts, 1983 27th Lancers, 1983 Madison Scouts, 1984 Garfield Cadets, 1985 Star of Indiana, 1986 Sky Ryders, 1986 Velvet Knights, 1987 Suncoast Sound, 1988 Star of Indiana, 1989 Santa Clara Vanguard, 1990 Dutch Boy, 1990 Spirit of Atlanta,
1991 Santa Clara Vanguard, 1995 Colts, and 2000 Carolina Crown. Volume II — Signatures offers glimpses into the individual personality of each corps. If you’re a long-time corps fan, when you listen to this CD you will remember uniforms, drill maneuvers and drill forms. If you’re a new fan, you’ll get a glimpse into what made each of these corps “connect” with the audience. Remember these titles? Black Saddle; Superstar Medley; Camptown Races; Popeye the Sailor Man; Man of LaMancha; Get It On; Malaga; Auld Lang Syne; Suite of Old American Dances; God Bless the Child; Artistry in Rhythm; Swan Lake; Land of Make Believe; Indian Lady; New World Symphony; Sir Duke; Russian Christmas Music; Tiger of San Pedro; Danny Boy; Let It Be Me; Softly As I Leave You; One
More Time, Chuck Corea; Appalachian Spring; Maria; NBC Chimes Festival; Bells and Autumn Leaves. How many of the corps could you name? Volume III — Jazz Plus includes the swaying swing, sultry ballads, fiery Spanish melodies, cool be-bop, jazzrock and pop tunes that have all been well represented in DCI circles throughout the years. Jazz, the United Nations of music, jams in all its glory on this CD. The 24 tracks on this CD include performances by Blue Stars, Argonne Rebels, Muchachos, Kilties, Oakland Crusaders, Madison Scouts, Blue Devils, Garfield Cadets, Northstar, Bridgemen, Spirit of Atlanta, 27th Lancers, Freelancers, Sky Ryders, Dutch Boy, Bluecoats and Crossmen. Volume IV — Symphonic Celebrations includes selections originally written for several different symphonic idioms. Corps fans have enjoyed music from past centuries alongside music fresh from the pens of today’s band and orchestra composers, representing the best symphonic music from the European and American concert hall traditions. Composers represented include; Gustav Holst, Manuel DeFalla, Aram Khachaturian, Reinhold Gliere, Larry Kerchner and Dennis DeLucia, Peter Mennin, Gustav Mahler, Ludwig van Beethoven, Benjamin Britten, Ron Nelson, Clifton Williams, Robert W.
Smith and Allan Murray, John Barnes Chance, Ottorino Respighi, William Walton, David Holsinger, James Curnow, Joaquin Rodrigo, Richard Wagner, Samuel Barber, Michael Daugherty, and Alberto Ginestera. Volume V — Magnificent Marches is the final CD in the current series. While the earliest marches in the evolution of DCI tended to be more traditional in character, latter day marches were quite stylistically different. But whatever the guise embraced by these works, it’s still the mighty march that truly says “drum corps” to many people. The 30 tracks and 22 corps on this CD represent the entire gamut of the marching world. From the most militaristic of traditional marches to elegant symphonic concert marches, it’s a toe-tapper’s paradise, saluting the origins of the activity. Each of these five CDs should be required listening for corps fans. However, DCI recognizes that not everyone will agree with the merits of each and every selection on this extensive series. Nor will all fans be able to contain themselves regarding selections that didn’t make the cut. For those of you who have requests and opinions, you will get your chance! Stay tuned to www.dci.org for survey opportunities. You will be heard! In the mean time, the five CDs that form the current series are available from DCI and ready to be shipped for your listening pleasure.
