THE Midwest Championships and Louisville SUMMER MUSIC GAMES

Letter from the Executive Director Greetings I recently attended the Texas Music Educators Association annual conference in San Antonio. Drum Corps International has had a presence in the expo area at that event for the past five years. Our primary objective is to promote Drum Corps International events and merchandise to Texas band directors, with the secondary focus of connecting with students who intend to be music educators. After a breakfast gathering we hosted for our corporate partners in attendance at the conference, I spent the remainder of a day in our booth in the expo area. I have worked many conferences over the years, but I have never seen such a high level of enthusiasm as I encountered at the

Drum Corps International booth that day in San Antonio. The praise, acceptance, and ringing endorsement our activity receives from Texas music educators is nothing short of exceptional. This is clearly seen by the significant number of Texas high school music students who come to our events each year; not to mention the amazing fact that every Division I corps has members from Texas. The 2002 season brought forth tremendous renewed enthusiasm for the drum corps activity. The corps were great, the attendance was improved over previous years, and people were genuinely excited once again. The excitement in Texas for what we do has also been seen this winter at conferences in Florida, Kentucky and

Chicago. The 2003 annual meetings of the Drum Corps International corps instructors, tour event partners and directors were extremely positive and productive in the furtherance of the growth and stability of the drum corps activity. We are truly blessed to have such renewed energy and enthusiasm, and you can rest assured the corps and the Drum Corps International organization will work to reach even further to earn the continued support of all involved. Now that the enthusiasm is back, we need to grow it. Get caught up in the FRENZY! Be in the stands when some of the most incredible youth performers march into a stadium near you. – Dan Acheson

Every parent wants only the best for their children. So what would Joani Meisner, Garfield Cadets alumna, want for her son? Well, to be a drum major for The Cavaliers, what else? DCI Today has had the fortunate experience of interviewing current members of drum corps whose parents have participated in the activity. Those of you who think the experience has drastically changed over the past 31 years should read what these families have to say.

DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you have noticed from the time that you marched until now?

Joani Meisner I really have to say the more things change the more they stay the same. Sleeping on gym floors and lukewarm showers are still the norm. Long bus rides and long practices are also the same. One of the biggest differences is that the quality of musicianship is so much higher and the talent level in staff members and corps members is incredible. One thing that will always stay the same about the activity, no matter who you marched with or when, we all take away something that has touched our lives in a way that we will always keep and cherish.

DCI Today How do you feel marching, knowing your mother had this same experience before you? Chris Meisner I never knew that my mom had marched until I had found an old drum corps tape in our basement. It was the ‘89 finals tape. No, my mom did not march in ‘89! This tape was discovered around the time where I had just star ted to really enjoy marching band in high school. I must have watched that tape a million times. My friends would come over sometimes and say things like, “What are you watching dude?” I could never really explain to them why I was so in love with it, but they kind of got used to it after a while. The whole reason for my stor y is that I never even knew about drum corps until I discovered it on my own. My

mom never forced it upon me or told me about it until I displayed such a high level of interest. I always thought it was kind of cool that I found it on my own and was not pressured or forced into liking it. It’s the coolest thing in the world having a mom that marched because when that first audition camp came around I didn’t have to give a sales pitch to my mom. She knew exactly what I was going through and she has suppor ted me from day one and always will. Thanks mom. DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you have come to realize between your drum corps experience and your mother’s experience? Chris Meisner Of course things have changed since my mom has marched. Such as the length and difficulty of tour. The show concepts and per formances in general

have evolved. Also, the cost to run a corps has increased unfor tunately. Drums corps was different 25 years ago, but so was the world. It was amazing to go to a show 25 years ago and one could still get that same exhilarating rush from a live per formance today. Drum corps is still drum corps. I don’t care what generation you’re from. We all have stories about crazy things that happened on the bus. The stories of great per formances to huge, screaming audiences, the exhaustion and injuries that we fought through on tour, the discipline and dedication. The memories always seem to be the same, only the experiences are shared with different people.

Pauline Chomniak My three daughters marched in the Bandettes Feeder Corps, which was a great deal of fun for all of us. My oldest daughter, Joelle, marched for four years in the Feeder Corps and is now in her seventh year with the Competitive Corps as lead soprano. She is also a first year college student and is enrolled in a music program majoring in trumpet. My daughter Danielle marched for five years in the Feeder Corps. The same year that she was to make the move to the Competitive Corps she was diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus so severe that her plans changed, but she has never forgotten her experience. My youngest daughter Chanelle was only 3 when I started the Feeder Corps and I remember bringing her to all the parades and events. At the age of 5 she started carrying the banner and before long was on colour guard. At the age of 12, Chanelle is currently in her second year with the competitive corps.

Pauline Chomniak As a past member, I am proud to watch as my girls grow as individuals and gain the sense of confidence and strength that drum corps has to offer. It’s a dream come true for me and would be nice to see my daughters march until they age out. DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you notice between your drum corps experience and your daughter's experience? Pauline Chomniak When I marched, we travelled much less, had shorter trips closer to home and one big tour a year. It wasn’t until 1998 when the trips were longer and more frequent. Things were a lot more disciplined, and more military like with the high mark time, shorter kilts, colour guard poles in holders. Now, the kids are gone most of the summer. The shows are filled with

1996-2003 Bandettes Competitive Corps DCI Today How do you feel marching, knowing your mother was a member of the Bandettes before you? Joelle Nadeau Marching Bandettes, knowing that my mother had the same experience as I do now, is just like marching with a big family. Through the years, my mother has gotten to know a lot of people. I am always known as “Pauline’s Oldest Daughter” which makes it easier to be known in the corps and was a great help when I first started in 1993 as I didn’t feel like a stranger. I’ve been trying to picture my mom rehearsing, sleeping on gym floors, travelling on a bus, and just doing drum corps all together but I can’t imagine it. You know when you get home from tour and your parents are upset at you for losing some stuff, or lending it out, and they call you irresponsible? Well, I can’t exactly see my mother going through the same thing with her parents. It’s hard to believe that drum corps has been around for that long and I hope it’s around for much longer so that my children can have an experience of a lifetime.

DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you have come to realize between your drum corps experience and your mother’s experience? Joelle Nadeau From the stories that my mother has told me about her memories, it seems as though drum corps calmed down a lot. My mother marched Bandettes about 30 years ago, and it was like being in the military. Everything was so disciplined that I don’t think I would have had enough strength to march. Now its more self-discipline and more laidback. The judging sheets are totally different. You would start at 100 and the judges would take points off for every time they saw a tick. I know it's a tradition in our corps to wear the kilts but back then the uniforms were so much heavier. They wore more wool and instead of shoes they wore boots. To me, it was a lot harder to march back then, but the way I look at it, I'm having fun and drum corps is an experience of a lifetime that has taught me a lot and helped me pursue my education in the field of music. World Championships August 5 – 9, 2003

Orlando, We know that most of you live, eat and sleep drum corps, but during the waking moments when you WON’T be completely mentally preoccupied during World Championships Week in Orlando, Florida, from August 5th through 9th, there’s plenty to do in the hopping downtown area.

Orlando is a city dedicated to the fine arts, as exemplified by the preponderance of concert halls and theaters located in the heart of the city. The home bases of the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Opera and the Southern Ballet Theater (and many other arts outlets) all reside a short distance from most downtown areas, so classical music aficionados can whet their appetites before or following the happenings at the Citrus Bowl. During DCI’s stay downtown, the Orlando Museum of Art will be featuring the works of American

8

artists such as Childe Hassam, Robert Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol as part of its “Celebrating a Decade of Growth: Selections from the Orlando Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection.” The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday. In the mood for some off-thebeaten-path entertainment options? Check out the Mad Cow Theater Company —- it’s Orlando’s version of New York’s Off-Off Broadway or London’s Fringe. A dedicated group of non-Equity actors puts on contemporary plays and modern classics in a 77-seat venue in an historic building downtown,

according to the group’s Web site. The company performs everything from Ibsen’s Ghosts to Irving Berlin. The Orlando Fire Museum and the Orlando Science Center, both near most downtown hotels, will whet the pragmatically curious appetites of most drum corps fanatics. More than 10 beautifully kept lakes all reside within walking distance of the downtown hotel sector, so why not wake up early one day and watch the unbelievable Orlando sun shine off a clear blue body of water?

News Update DCI Pacific Division is excited about the appearance of Phantom Regiment in select contests this year. The corps will appear in the Pacific Procession and Precision West events in Northern California and also on the Fourth of July weekend in Southern California. Also, Phantom Regiment will attend the Phoenix event and the new Las Vegas show in July.

DCI Pacific Division Other new events for the Pacific Region are the addition of a contest on the campus of the University of Oregon. This will add another major university show in the region, joining the Seattle Cascades’ show at the University of Washington, Husky Stadium, on July 5 and Boise State University on July 8. The Concord Blue Devils and Seattle Cascades will be headlining this tour that will continue on to Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, and Denver’s Drums Along the Rockies show. The Pacific Region is proud to introduce the Pacific Crest from Diamond Bar, CA, to the fans at the World Championships in Orlando. This will be the first trip for Pacific Crest to the World Championships in this, their 10th year of existence.

This year, Midwest drum corps powerhouses like The Cavaliers, Bluecoats and the Glassmen are coming to the East Coast for a series of shows — and the headto-head competition with the Eastern corps will truly be electrifying. The typical Eastern tour for a corps will begin on June 22 in Birmingham, AL, and will wind its way from Atlanta to Winston-Salem, NC, up to Chesapeake, VA, Allentown, PA, and East Rutherford, NJ On June 29 the corps will compete for the Beanpot in Beverly, Mass., then head up to Fort Edward, NY, and onto the barrage of New England parades on the Fourth of July. It should be noted that “I love a parade” is usually NOT heard within the corps ranks, as that day can be pretty grueling for a drum corps. This year is no different. For many corps, the day will begin with the oldest parade in the country at 10 a.m. in Bristol, RI Following the marching madness of the Fourth, corps then head off to the Hershey Spectacular on Sunday, July 6 in Hershey, PA There they are greeted by a usual packed house of ravenous junior and senior drum corps fans. Many of these shows will also include DCI Division II & III corps like the Spartans, East Coast Jazz, Jersey Surf, Patriots, Raiders and more. Check out DCI.org for complete schedules.

Meanwhile, on Saturday evening, July 12, the Division III finalists (chosen by performance from Friday night), will perform, followed by Division II corps, senior corps in attendance (Governaires, Chops, Inc., Kilties and Minnesota Brass) and The Cavaliers, Bluecoats, Glassmen, Madison Scouts, Colts, Capital Regiment, Southwind and Pioneer (please note: this is not a performance order). The action is going to be as HOT as the mid-July weather will be! But that’s not all! We're bringing the action practically to your front door! Through the summer we’ll be continuing to host tantalizing shows in towns close to your home — the Midwest arm of Drum Corps International will be putting on shows throughout Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. Check the calendar at DCI.org and see when we'll be in YOUR hometown!

DCI Midwest Division

DCI Atlantic Division

Like other regions, DCI Midwest Division is set to stage an exciting summer, due in part to the addition of several Eastern corps (The Cadets, Crossmen, Boston Crusaders, Carolina Crown and Kiwanis Kavaliers) that will be competing for the first time at THE Midwest Championships in DeKalb, IL, on July 11 on the campus of Northern Illinois University, at Huskie Stadium.

Physical

Excellence

Today’s programs demand physical excellence, instructors agree. “Overall, the members who participate in drum corps are in far better shape than those of 10 years ago,” said Ron Hardin, visual caption head for the Santa Clara Vanguard. “There seems to be more of a social consciousness about fitness within our activity, and we’re seeing most auditionees arrive in better shape,” Hardin said. Meanwhile, John Bradford and Ken Karlin, visual staff instructors of the Blue Devils, say that the physical demands of today’s shows dictate a higher level of physical fitness from performers. “In general the performers have greater endurance, strength and flexibility because of the demands of the show design,” Bradford said. “The depth of physical challenges has increased. The envelope has been pushed in terms of faster tempos for longer periods of time in show designs, with greater step sizes and wider movement vocabulary possible for everyone, particularly the musicians. It has made drum corps more of an athletic activity,” Bradford said. “The vocabular y asked of per formers has grown phenomenally,” Karlin added. “Today’s performers are being asked to move while playing and per forming

14

choreography (brass, percussion and color guard). Performers are asked to move at faster tempos then they were 10 years ago. Look at what color guards are performing now. They are performing complex choreography within staging responsibilities. Look at what brass players are asked to do (run AND play). Look at what percussionists are doing — running with a drum (which creates leverage challenges), while playing. Look at the 2002 Blue Devils’ drum line during “I Got Rhythm.” Look at the challenges (moving while playing, moving at a fast tempo, multiple orientation changes)!” Karlin said. Hardin agreed that the physical demands of today’s shows are physically demanding, and that greater physical fitness expectations have forever altered program design. “The better in shape a performer is, the more that can be asked of him or her,” Hardin said. “What was unusual or unexpected a decade ago is now the norm,” Hardin continued. “Performers are expected to be able to jazz-run and play at the same time, for a good portion of their programs. This has afforded designers the ability to write more complex and difficult programs.”

More physically complex programs have also dictated that corps maintain a somewhat strict exercise regimen, to make sure that the demands of a show can be met throughout a long, exhausting summer. “The Blue Devils conduct full-body conditioning, and members must demonstrate that they are committed to and maintain appropriate body conditioning,” Bradford said. “The entire drum corps receives body training surrounding flexibility, endurance and core conditioning (incorporating multiple dance techniques, pilates, yoga, cardiovascular

Karlin clarifies that physical conditioning evolves through a season. “We start slowly in the early months and build through the first months of camps and rehearsals. In the summer the conditioning becomes a result of rehearsal of the show. Like a football team that doesn't do a lot of hitting in practice once the season has started, the running and physical conditioning is less a part of the actual rehearsal as the World Championships grows nearer. We continue to reinforce techniques and training that build the proper foundation,” Karlin said. Better conditioning before the season naturally leads to better onfield performances, especially in the early season, Hardin said. “We tell our members from day one, that if they do their homework now, and are in shape by May, we can be a month ahead of schedule. Today’s shows are so physically demanding, that the only way to generate excitement and effect for 11 minutes is if they are in shape. Otherwise, the program loses its intensity, and we shortchange the early season audiences.” Beginning in the winter months, kids can star t preparing for the physical demands of the drum corps

The physical demands of marching in a top drum corps have grown exponentially over the last 10 years, and more complex program designs demand more physical fitness from all performers, top drum corps visual instructors agree. conditioning, core training, general body awareness, as well as ‘ye good olde push-ups’ and the like).” Not surprisingly, instructors must stay informed of the latest training techniques. Hardin said, “We as instructors are educating ourselves in physical training methods, to bring to the drum corps kids. We introduce them to specific training methods, diet regimens, encourage them to keep daily journals of their physical work, introduce Yoga, flexibility routines, strength-training, cardiovascular work, etc.” Even in the off-season, Hardin says, members of the Santa Clara Vanguard are encouraged to begin a fitness regime. “We encourage our members to follow a strict, sixday-a-week training program throughout the winter: Three days of strength training, three days of cardiovascular work. They alternate days, and all programs follow an individual intensity-level approach. We have evolved our camp conditioning to follow this individual approach. Those members who are in better shape initially can push themselves, just as those who have more work to do. We have had great success with this approach, and seen great results,” Hardin said.

season, Karlin said, and offered up these tips for preparing for the summer: “Be in peak physical condition. Concentrate on the three main aspects of athletic per formance: Flexibility, endurance and core conditioning. Focus on a healthy lifestyle: Proper nutrition, exercise, water and rest. Preparing the body and mind with study in dance, yoga, mar tial ar ts or some other mind/body connecting discipline is excellent training for the demands of a drum corps. Leverage previous par ticipation in other activities that suppor t healthy lifestyle: Soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, dance and gymnastics, as these activities help to create a sound foundation. Always follow the guidance of a healthcare professional to do what is right for your body. Star t slowly and build,” Karlin said. Bradford and Karlin add that fitness is a lifelong commitment, and that strict attention to fitness should be maintained beyond a person’s drum corps years. “The focus should be on training the body for life, not just for the drum corps season,” Bradford said.

DCI Today What does it mean to you to have your two sons march with your alma mater, the Colts? Denis W. Fangman I love it. I so enjoyed being in the Colts when I marched. I feel that I learned so much about how to deal with life's

little ups and downs by being there on the field. I know that they will get more out of this activity at this time in their life than any thing else that they will do. DCI Today What are the similarities and differences between now and then?

DCI Today How do you feel marching, knowing your father marched with the same organization years before you? Michael Fangman I feel pretty good knowing that my dad did the same thing as me when he was my age!

Denis W. Fangman This is a hard question; drum corps is still drum corps. Yesterday, like today, we still had to put it on the field and sell it to the crowd; we rode the busses, did the practice, marched the long hot parades, ate

DCI Today How does it make you feel knowing your sons are carrying on your legacy in the same organization with which you marched and have spent so much time? Rick Odello First of all I would like to thank my parents Tony and Ann Odello for starting the Blue Devil organization back in 1957 and getting myself, my sister Annette, brother Tony Jr. and myself involved. I could not be more pleased that all four of my sons have decided to continue in our proud family tradition of being Blue Devil members. I feel extremely fortunate that three of our sons will be marching with the A Corps percussion section this year, and one with the B Corps. Living the greatest

DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you notice between your drum corps experience and your father’s experience? Jon Fangman I have noticed that now it is a lot more competitive on a different level than it was back when my dad marched and that nowadays we practice a lot more than he did when he was in it. But on the other hand tour life is basically the same from when he marched. You still ride a bus most of the summer and you still sleep on a gym floor.

experience of my life over again through my son’s eyes is an incredibly rewarding and emotional experience. DCI Today What are some similarities and differences you notice between your drum corps experience any your son’s experience? Rick Odello The life-long relationships and friendships you develop while being in a drum corps have never changed. The great opportunity to travel and gain life experiences that will never be forgotten is still there. The difference really is in the tremendous quality of today’s programs and performances. The way the performances and the activity have continued to evolve and improve is truly remarkable.
