A Wheatland County property owner may be facing Animal Protection Act and Criminal Code charges as the Alberta SPCA has been rounding up 400 allegedly mistreated horses and cattle since Monday. One stallion had to be euthanized and the ASPCA suspects more will have to be put down. As of Wednesday, the ASPCA had corralled 130 of the 400 animals. Rick Wheatley of the ASPCA said the individual, who owns property south of East Coulee, has breached a 10 year prohibition from previous offences. His prohibition only allowed him to keep 10 horses, 20 ponies, and 10 cows. The company of John Barry Graham allegedly broke codes of the Animal Protection Act for not providing food, water, and veterinary care to the horses. “A lot of animals are in poor condition, and as a result, animals are going to be removed for their welfare,” said Wheatley, speaking from the property on Wednesday. “We’ve been able to load most of these animals onto the trailers, and haven’t had to do anything else.” The ASPCA will be bringing to the Crown charges of breach of prohibition, two charges under the Animal Protection Act, and stray animal charges which are already in the process of being dealt with. Officials were tipped off about the property from numerous stray animal complaints, and once on Graham’s property last week, they noticed the mistreated animals. They attained a warrant, and began work on removing the distressed animals Monday. “We’ve dealt with this indi-

vidual a number of times over the last couple of years, and it culminated with this prohibition breach,” said Wheatley. RCMP attended the property, rounding up the livestock using ATVs and on horseback. On Wednesday, the colts and adult horses were corralled to eventually be loaded into a livestock carrier near Highway 564, southeast of East Coulee. The animals will be brought to Bow Slopes, where they will be held for a 10-day period.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

Last Saturday evening I thought I would attend the annual spring fund raiser put on by the community at the east end of the valley. I’ve worked at it a couple of years, and I enjoyed it, but this time I just wanted to sit and listen to some music. I drove out a little after 8:00 pm thinking the place would be packed, and parking at a premium. I was right, it was packed, but I found a nice parking spot, apparently just recently vacated, not 30 feet from the hall door. I walked in the door and asked the two young people stationed there, “How much to get in?” (I was sure that I had heard on the radio that admission was $20.00). When the young fellow replied, “Thirty dollars,” I recoiled somewhat in surprise, and somewhat in embarrassment. You see, I don’t carry much cash, and all I had with me was $25 dollars, enough I thought, for admission and a burger. I threw my money on the table and told the kid that it was all I had. He said he’d have to get someone higher up. A minute later he returned with an older higher up, who smiled at me, and said, “It’s a fundraiser.” Any good fundraiser would have scooped up my $25 dollars, smiled and said, “You owe me five bucks, enjoy the show”, but not this guy. I told him that I understood, and that I’d just pick up my money and go home. I went out the way I’d come in, but after about 10 feet, I thought about wanting a burger. I turned and went back in. I said to the elder higher up, “Just so the night isn’t a complete loss, how much for a burger?” To my complete surprise, he smiled that same smile and said, “The price of admission, plus the price of the burger.” I thought for sure that he had said this function was a fundraiser. Here I was, trying to give him money and there he was, thwarting my every attempt. Some fundraiser. I spent my 25 dollars... somewhere else.

O’Shea’s: Your community pub Besides serving ‘AAA’ steaks and new Boston Pride Fries, O’Shea’s Eatery and Ale House has been a strong supporter of community projects in the valley. “We’re one town, the community supports us and we want to support the community,” says Matt Ghesquiere, General Manager of O’Shea's. With a recent dinner fundraisier for a Greentree School class, regular donations to the Drumheller and District Humane Society, and supporting The Salvation Army during their Christmas rush, O’Shea’s has been a dependable source for supporting local events. “We’re always looking for more ways to help. We’re willing to volun-

teer our building, time, and effort to assist organizations in need of help,” says Ghesquiere. Now boasting brand new burger patties, which taste and look better than before, O’Shea’s is still the ideal restaurant in Drumheller for a night out. Topping off the varied and delicious menu when looking for a fun

evening, O’Shea’s also takes pride in bringing in music acts and comedians to make their meals and drinks memorable. Rock and blues band Deadhorse will be playing at the pub on Saturday, April 23, with local Celtic rock act Fire Coulee Bandits opening. “We try to get as many acts in as possible.”

CWD travelling Red Deer River corridor Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The problem of Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer in Alberta is getting closer to home. This season there were 19 deer identified among more than 5,000 hunter–killed deer tested in Alberta. Four of these were discovered along the Red Deer River near Dinosaur Provincial Park. They are the furthest west cases discovered yet. Alberta Fish and Wildlife officer Byron Jensen said these discoveries are close to the southern border of Wildlife Management Unit (WMU) 160, which comes up to Drumheller. CWD is a prion disease that infects members of the deer family, and is always fatal. While there is no risk to livestock or humans, once it is established it is difficult to control.

In 2005, the first case of CWD in wild mule deer was discovered near Acadia Valley. The province stepped up its surveillance, and through culls and hunter cooperation, began testing killed animals along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. Hunters in the area were required to submit the heads of their prey to be tested and coordinates as to where it was killed. Jensen said it has been established that the Red Deer River is a movement corridor for deer and the disease. “It is known that one of the infected areas is the Red Deer River area, and it only makes sense it is going to keep working its way down the river, and now the furthest west are the Dinosaur Park positives,” said Jensen. He said this year’s numbers mimic previous seasons when Fish and Wildlife were doing active hunts, a practice they have

forgone about three years ago for distributing more tags to hunters. This indicates the numbers may be rising. He says monitoring is taking place in the CWD Zones including WMU 152, which borders WMU 160. The Red Deer River passes between the two zones at the Finnegan Ferry. In these areas head submission is mandatory. “As the crow flies from where those last positives were found, you are 40 miles from the Finnegan Ferry,” said Jensen. “It is possible that the hunter head submission may be required in WMUs further west, which includes 160. We’ll see in the next year or two if that becomes a reality.” He said the best way to manage the disease is to manage the populations. However even if they thin the populations, transmission can occur, especially in the cooler months.

Jensen said in a prairie region, most of the habitat coverage is in the river valley, and in the winter, deer tend to congregate where there is shelter. As the populations crowd, the risk of transmission rises. “The deer are fairly well dispersed in the summer, but once winter rolls around the deer head to the Red Deer River Valley,” said Jensen. The harshness of the past winter, however, may have a positive effect on controlling the populations. “Maybe this bad winter will cull out the sick and injured deer like it typically does, and maybe it will cause a lot of the CWD infested deer to die,” said Jensen. “At the end of the day nature might be the best bet as opposed to hunters (culling them).”

THE WANDERING BULL

une was taking a renegade bull with a tendency to “wander” to the sale barn in Dodge City. Her son helped her load the beast in to their stock trailer. It was an authentic ranch trailer with lights that worked intermittently, gates that swung almost even, tires that didn’t match, and compressed rubber floorplanks whose 99-year warranty had expired! A few miles outside of Dodge, June heard and felt a thump, crack and crunch loud enough to be heard above George Strait on KBUF. In her rear-view mirror she watched a dark object helicopter out from under the second axle! She swerved to the right and stopped on a slant in the bar ditch. Upon examination, she found a hole in the floor of the front compartment of the trailer. The bull, butt to the front, was eyeing the hole nervously. “Simple,” she surmised, “I’ll just open the divider gate and move him into the rear compartment and be on my way.” She unlatched the gate and it swung it open. The bull was coaxed around the hole to the rear and June hurried around to close the divider. It was on a good slant. She pushed it closed and raced back around to latch it…BUT, not in time! It swung back open. Three times she attempted the maneuver, when she heard someone say, “Can I help you?” A handsome, strong Kansas State trooper smiled. June left him to push and hold while she went around to catch and latch. When the divider banged closed it spooked the bull who tried to climb over the back gate, slid to the down side and spooked the trooper who fell back writhing in agony! He was on the ground grasping his knee! She reached to help him, “No,” he groaned, “I can do it!” He keyed his collar mike, “Officer down! Officer down! I’ve been injured and need assistance!”

Within five minutes the horizon in all directions was filled with red and blue flashing lights and sirens blaring! They closed Hwy 400. Well, nobody could get around all the Dodge City Police cars, Ford County Sheriff deputy pickups, the ambulance, fire trucks, tow truck, first responders and one Wildlife and Park Service utility vehicle. After a thorough questioning, they realized the truth. The upset June told them she thought they were going to handcuff her and leave her in the ditch while they searched her rig for contraband! One big burly officer laughed and said, “Yeah, but if we’d done that, you could’ve told’em it took six of us to get the job done, and you put one of us in the hospital!”

Crossword

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Triumph of Love: romantic adventure wins the heart of royalty submitted | inSide Drumheller

QUOTE

What is a princess to do when she falls in love with the rightful heir to the throne? From April 2030 Rosebud School of the Arts students show audiences exactly what to do in The Triumph of Love by Marivaux. Originally written in the 18th century by French playwright, Pierre de Marivaux, this recent translation by James McGruder makes the play more accessible for today’s audiences. Although not well known in this century, Marivaux wrote many comedies in his lifetime, so many in fact that an entire writing style is named after him. “The style of the period often took quite restrained characters and thrust them into crazy situations with hilarious results." Mark Lewandowski

The play follows Princess Léonide who discovers she is not the rightful heir to the throne. When she finally sees Prince Agis, she instantly falls in love with him. But she had also been taught to hate him, so she dresses up like a man to befriend him and then win his love. Along the way she has to overcome his cranky guardian and stodgy sister with a series of deceptions, bribes and seductions.

Even if you’re not catching all the wordplay and layers of metaphor, you still know exactly what’s going on.” Regarding the idea of placing the play in a more modern setting to make it more relevant for today’s audiences, Lewandowski commented, “In the 18th century, honour and appropriate decorum were much more important than they are now, so that concept just didn’t translate as well. However, once we got the

play on its feet, the period certainly makes comedy so much more entertaining.” This period setting also meant that the costumes had to reflect that time in history - a challenge for the students who were also working on costuming as part of their schooling this semester. “Each student in the class must work on one of the production aspects, and the female students working on costumes were at times overwhelmed,” explains Lewandowski. “But the final product is amazing, a feast for the eye from set to lighting and props! I can’t help but gush at the end result.” The hilarious romantic adventure plays on the Rosebud Studio Stage from April 20-30 at 4:30 PM. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Show dates include April 20, 21, 28, 29, 30.

The Drumheller Aquadinnies Swim Team is pleased to announce four swimmers have made nationals (age group trials) for the 2010/2011 swim season: Devon Chernow, Austin Knibb, Parker Knibb, and Alan Lister. Aquadinnies president Blaine McDonald wishes to thank all their coaches for a great showing, in what he calls their undeniable best in many years.

Many swimmers set personal bests, broke multiple club records and showed leadership at regional, provincial, and soon, national levels. The Aquadinnies swim program is designed to teach the skills required for competing at the local, provincial and national levels depending on age and ability.

“An achievable, but certainly lofty goal this year was to send one swimmer to nationals. We’re elated to see that four of our swimmers will be travelling to Montreal, Quebec in May, representing Alberta and the Aquadinnies for the Swim Canada National Age Group Trials,” says McDonald.
