Highway 9 work continues, resurfacing on Highway 56 Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

As the snow recedes, and the roads become driveable, it can only mean construction season is back again. Last week the Province of Alberta rolled out its road construction itinerary for the season. In the Drumheller area, residents will see a little more of what they saw last year, as Highway 9 construction continues. “This project was planned for two years because of the size of the project, said Trent Bancarz, spokesperson for Alberta Transportation. “Part of what makes that project longer is it is not only widening the highway, it is being completely reconstructed in some places. On some sections of it, we’re starting from scratch. He explains that on an extensive project such as Highway 9, once the base and side sloping is in place, often the work has to settle before they continue with the project. The stretch of Highway 9 that is being reconstructed includes the intersection at Highway 21. Extensive work has been completed to improve sight lines for drivers as they approach the intersection.

Construction on Highway 9 will resume this season with an eye on completion this fall. Highway 56

from Hussar to the Trans Canada Highway is also slated to be resurfaced. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

“A lot of the work we have done on Highway 9 over the last few years is taking a very old highway and bringing it up to a modern standard, said Bancarz. “There has been a lot of advances in recent years; a lot of engineering advances, advances in materials, techniques. The 15-kilometre stretch of Highway 9 has a price tag of about $20.4 million and is slated to be complete this fall.

This year the Alberta government is set to spend $1.7 billion on the provincial highway network. “This is about making the right investments at the right time, said Luke Ouellette, Minister of Transportation. “We will continue to build and take advantage of lower overall construction costs because when we keep building, we keep Albertans working, support our com-

munities and lay the foundation for future economic growth. This season a repaving project on Highway 56 between Hussar and the Trans Canada Highway is set to go. Bancarz said while they have not accepted any tenders the project to resurface the 22-kilometre stretch, he estimates the value of about $5 million.

DVSS math teacher semi finalist for provincial award A Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) math educator is crunching the numbers on his odds of receiving a 2010 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Province of Alberta. Already Dan Hird has been named a semi finalist for the award. Of the 326 eligible nominations, he was in the top 135. He said it is nice to be recognized. Hird actually completed his schooling in Drumheller, and after university came home, and has enjoyed a 26-year career. While he has taught many areas, he now primarily teaches high school mathematics. He has also coached volleyball and golf at the school. He was also involved in numerous fundraising endeavours by the school for sports programs. It has come full circle for his family as his youngest daughter graduated from the school in 2009. He was nominated for the award by two of his colleagues and a parent. “I know of no teacher who spends more hours

providing one on one extra help and tutoring than Dan Hird. On any given day you will find him working on an individual basis with students after school. Whether that student is the valedictorian, or a student struggling to get a passing mark, Dan is willing to go the extra mile to provide help and support,” was said of Hird in letters of nomination for the award.

featuring literary heavyweights, Ron Reed’s production tells the tale of Lilia MacDonald, the daughter of George MacDonald, author, poet and minister whose work has inspired many famous writers, most notably C.S. Lewis. Full of passion and drive, the young actress shines in family-produced stage shows. Even when her audience includes the daunting figures of Mark Twain and Lewis Carroll. Her passion craves more than family productions and she sets about making that happen. Forces of a repressive moral code and the reputation of the stage in Victorian times, not to mention the tangle of young love, play against her as she tries to find her place. “I’ve been comparing the drama of such a choice to the drama of salmon swimming upstream,” said director Morris Ertman. “It takes tenacity, talent and heart to make it all the way. And this story asks the question about what “all the way” means. Is it bright light success, or the success that comes from voicing stories that one is passionate about?” While at heart a simple story, the production demonstrates the complex setting and motivations of the characters in the confines of the stage without becoming muddled. Because of this, there is human insight found in each character. There are no villains motivated by rancour, simply the forces of love and social conviction. This makes the conflict more plausible and even more heartwrenching. It is simple to battle evil, but it is harder to stand up and find your place when it is contrary to those who love you. Lilia’s place to stand is on the stage, and the ensemble at Rosebud Theatre again proves it is their place.

Some of our long-term members can trace their roots back to the Ukraine. There is a sense of where we came from and what if we were to return and give something back,” said Boehm. “It is an effort to recognize that in part this is where our faith comes from, because people came to Canada and brought their faith with them.” Lynn Hemming is heading out on the trip. "I have been feeling it for a long time. I like to travel and I would like to do something towards a humanitarian effort,” she said. The Ukraine is finding its way back to the faith. As Hemming explains, under the cloak of the Soviet Union, practicing religion was outlawed and church leaders were jailed or even executed. After 70 years, and a number of generations, people are finding religion again.

Donair shop couple up for Canada’s Worst Handyman Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller They’re awesome at making donairs, but Country Donair owners Ajay Pal Singh and his wife Prabhjot Sarao are in contention for the infamous title of Canada’s Worst Handyman in the new season airing May 2. Exhausted by Ajay’s failed projects, Prabhkot nominated him for the show, and they flew out to Toronto in January for the filming of the show.

In Season 6 of Canada’s Worst Handyman, five of the country’s most hapless home renovators are tasked with overhauling a motel in Niagara Falls, Ontario. At the motel, each handyman (and one handywoman) – along with their nominator – attempts to remodel a room and transform the space into a themed, romantic, honeymoon retreat. The group must also work together to create the ultimate romantic haven, a Couple’s Spa.

This season features a couples theme, “Honeymoon Suites”. A release from Discovery Channel said Ajay is a businessman and landlord. Keith Russell, Operations Manger for the Town of Drumheller, explains it is a particularly bad year for potholes. This is based on the high amount of moisture the valley has received this winter and the unusual melting pattern. Warm days followed by freezing at nights can go a long way in damaging asphalt. While a gradual meltdown is preferable in many cases, for roads it can wreck havoc. He said town crews are responding to residential complaints, as well as going out and fixing the potholes before there are complaints. While the Town of Drumheller is responsible for many of the roads, the major highways through town fall under provincial jurisdiction. He said Ledcor is also being responsive in fixing the road as the potholes develop. Fixing potholes does come with some expense. While it would be preferable to patch the holes with hot asphalt, there are not many plants operating this time of year, and they have to bring a cold mixture. Because often the cold mixture is produced in the fall, sometimes the quality can deteriorate. The town is purchasing orders of cold mix from the Edmonton area. This expense is on top of the labour compo-

nent. If drivers want to report a particularly bad pothole they can

call the Town of Drumheller at 403-823-6300 or 403-823-1330 to let the town know.

Suppose they called an election and nobody showed up. After all, the big talking heads of the opposition parties made it clear, proclaiming to the end, that none of them wanted an election. They even went so far as to tell us that Canadians did not want an election at this time, yet when it came time for action to replace words, the words were apparently nothing more than empty rhetoric, and what Canadians didn’t want, once again didn’t matter. So here we are, with the three talking heads contributing more to global warming (of which I am a deuier) in 6 weeks than the oilsands contribute in 6 months. They all call for spending, cutting, caring and compassion. Depending on where you live, you will get more of one over the other. Alright, the guy who really annoys me? That “Nobody-cares-morethen-I-do” socialist marionette, Jack Layton. The man comes to Alberta to try and pump up his one sitting MP, and says not a peep about the oilsands, but when he reaches Quebec he feels safe enough to slam the tarsands (his term) as ‘dirty’ oil, and as the biggest emitter of CO2 in the world. With all his bluster and blather, the man must surely rank as the second biggest emitter. This is where cap and trade might work. Put a cap on Layton and trade him to the Chinese. Just out of curiosity. I wonder how long Jack waited for his hip surgery, at what clinic he had it done, and how much he paid. After all, as Jack will tell you, timely access to good health care is your right, and it is free, because socialism works. There’s a perfect example of an oxymoron, socialism works, it’s done wonders for the health care system. Then of course there’s that long drink of an intellectual, Michael Iquatiett. For a smart guy you’d think he’d know that a cap and trade system for limiting CO2 emissions holds the potential for fraud the like of which Bernie Madott could only imagine. The trading of a colourless, ordorless gas is a fraudsters dream come true. Under cap and trade, companies will require permits to emit CO2. These permits, theoretically, are offset by others who “carbon capture” or do not use CO2. The permits will be traded on exchanges, like stocks. The system does nothing to reduce a companies emissions, it merely needs to buy offsets, and who knows how many times some slick operator might sell the same offset, or even if the wind farm in Argentina or the tree farm in Russia even exist? An intellectual? Really? Poor Elizabeth May, she can’t get a seat at the big people table. Maybe if she would quit ordering from the kiddie menu. Still, if there was one person who should be excluded from the national debate, it should probably not be Miss, Ms. May. No, it should be Gilles Duceppe, the faux (that’s French for phoney, false) leader of the faux nation of Quebec. Why this man and his party are even allowed to sit in Canada Parliament I do not know. If you were to look up the word “Hypocrite” in the dictionary, there would Mr. Duceppe’s mug glaring back at you. Neither he nor his party want his province to be part of Canada, yet they troop in Canada’s Parliament every day so that the Government of Canada makes them out a pay cheque. Gilles Duceppe does not campaign outside of Quebec, nor does his party run candidates outside of Quebec, yet he is given a place in a national debate. A hundred years ago he’d have been hung for treason. I’d settle for kicking him and his parti out of the Canadian House of Commons. And they accuse Harper and the Tories of contempt of Parliament. Duceppe and his Parti show their contempt for Parliament by their mere presence. 14m

QUOTE

ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM www.baxterblack.com

April’s speed enforcement campaign is to increase the number of people obeying the speed limit on provincial roadways. What does the maximum speed limit mean? Posted speed limits are the maximum speeds permitted if conditions are favourable. Research and fatal collision investigations throughout the province have shown that three out of every ten fatal crashes, or 30 per cent, involve driving at a speed unsafe for the prevailing road conditions. S/Sgt. Art Hopkins of the Drumheller RCMP Detachment says, “This is about getting to your destination safely. Speed limits save lives everyday, maybe today it’s yours or someone you care about. By the time you realize you’re going too fast, it may be too late. Remember the faster you go, the longer it takes to stop and the harder you hit.”

GOOD TIMES UP NORTH

was in North Dakota in early spring. The night before, the temperature was 3 degrees. That morning it had warmed up to 4. I walked into the giant Ag Expo building and made a circle of the trade show just visiting. I stopped at the booth of a man selling wood stoves. “How are things goin’?” I asked. “Well, “ he said, shaking his head, “You know how things are.” I DID know how things were. I’d been up north the month before. Everywhere I looked, prosperity reigned! The oil business was booming and had moved his home state into wealth. They could change their name to North Wyoming or Saudi Dakota! I read unemployment was below 4%, banks were flush, and the state treasury had a surplus. I thought maybe the vendor was seriously ill, was financing his daughter’s veterinary school education, or he’d been unable to winter in Acapulco because of the drug war. “Is business bad?” I asked. “Selling stoves in North Dakota in the middle of the winter?” he replied as if I was a moron. At least he didn’t say “Duh!”

“This is about getting to your destination safely. Speed limits save lives everyday, maybe today it’s yours or someone you care about." S/Sgt. Art Hopkins

The RCMP is asking motorists to keep the following in mind before they head out onto Alberta roadways: • The speed limit in both urban and rural school zones is 30 km/h and is in effect on school days from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. unless other times are posted by the municipality. • The speed limit in a playground zone is 30 km/h

Speeding is Alberta law enforcement’s focus for the month of April. The ultimate goal of the enforcement campaign is to increase the number of people obeying the speed limits on Alberta roadways, making them safer for all. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

and is in effect from 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset. • Motorists must slow to 60 km/h, or less if the posted speed is lower, when passing emergency vehicles or tow trucks stopped with their lights flashing. Fines for speeding in these areas will be double the regular amount. • In construction zones, motorists must observe the posted speed. When workers are present, fines for speeding in these areas will

be doubled. Everyday in the Province of Alberta RCMP members see evidence that shows driving too fast does not allow drivers enough time to react to traffic signals such as red lights or stop signs, or other potential hazards that may be present, like children darting into traffic. By increasing our public education and enforcement efforts, the RCMP aims to make Alberta’s roadways safer for everyone.

I asked what he did in the summer. “I farm,” he said, “Corn, wheat and beans, and I run about 400 cows.” “It looks like grain and beans are going to skyrocket in price, what with Russia’s famine and Ethanol. And cattle are selling at record prices!” I said. “Yeah, but you know how things go, something could happen,” he said, “the river might flood, there’s still time for a blizzard…” Try as I might I couldn’t get him to say anything optimistic. I put myself in his place and tried to think up something positive like…”The new gate we hung that goes to the lower lot swings good, I made my rubber boots last longer by not wearing them outside, I discovered Plasti-Dip for my old pump plier handles, the doctor said I was only twenty pounds overweight, I finally finished reading Max Armstrong’s autobiography, my son is taking welding in Vo-Ag, we got a satellite dish so we can watch RFD-TV, the pipes didn’t freeze in the basement, I thought I wasn’t going to like my wife’s new car…but I do.” But I said instead, “Accounting for the recession, I’d say you’re doin’ pretty good.” “Yeah, but…I have to live here,” he said. “Well, just hang on,” I said, “And pray for global warming!”

Graffiti, junk focus of town’s annual spring cleanup Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Its that time of year where the hockey buzz turns to playoffs. Who’s hot? Who’s not? Will they make it? How far will they go? These are all considerations to ponder as you fill out your annual hockey pool. Do you put all your eggs in one basket for a team to win? Or do you spread it out with picks from a variety of squads? Who gets hot in the post season? Who has a

glass jaw? It’s time to fill out Greentree School’s Annual Hockey Pool. The pool is to raise funds for the Greentree School after school sports programs. If there are 200 entries they are able to offer a $1,000 grand prize, $500 for second and $250 for third. There are also first and second round winner prizes. Entry forms are available at the Greentree School office, or from

www.greentree-school.com. Entries must be received by 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 12 at Greentree School. The results will be posted daily at www.officepools. com.

Hopefully spring has hopsprung, and with it comes the annual spring cleaning initiative put forth by the town, starting on May 2. As well as having property owners haul junk to the curb for the town to pick up, property owners who were vandalized with graffiti will be asked to remove it from the property. The Community Standards Bylaw was passed last year, and within it is a clause allowing Drumheller Community Enforcement to issue citations to property owners to remove unsightly graffiti within a two week window. Prior to 2010, there was no graffiti bylaw within the policies of the town. Supervisor of Community Enforcement Darcy Nundahl says residents can expect the vandalism in various parts of town to be removed in the near future. Community Enforcement updated council on plans at Monday’s council meeting. “It’s going to be dealt with,” said Nundahl. “We do understand that it’s not their fault their buildings are being vandalized, and we try to work with them to remove the problem,” said Nundahl. “When owners leave it, I be-

The addition of spinach to this broccoli soup just adds more flavor and more nutrients to an already healthy dish. Enjoy!

Add broth and 2 cups water. When mixture returns to simmer, add the spinach and stir until wilted.

Transfer about half the soup to the blender along with the cheeses. Process until smooth, or your desired consistency (I liked mine a little crunchier)

Broccoli/Spinach Soup 2 Tbsp. butter 2 pounds broccoli florets, chopped 1 onion, chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 ½ tsp. dry mustard powder pinch cayenne pepper 1 tsp. salt 3-4 cups water 1/4 tsp. baking soda 2 cups chicken broth (or vegetable) 2 loosely packed cups baby spinach 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup parmesan cheese, grated Heat butter in Dutch oven. When foaming subsides, add broccoli, onion, garlic, mustard, cayenne and salt. Cook, stirring frequently for about 6 minutes. Add 1 cup water and the baking soda. Simmer, covered for 20 minutes, stirring once.

Pour into a bowl and repeat with the remaining soup from Dutch oven. Return all blended soup to the pot and simmer. Season with salt and pepper and serve with more cheese. You can add more water depending on the consistency you prefer. 14m

lieve it encourages more of that type of activity to happen.” Although Nundahl says it’s unrealistic to prevent people from creating graffiti, he encourages residents to report this type of activity to Community Enforcement, and to take initiative to clean up the vandalism on their own. “Now that we have warmer weather it’s easier for owners to take care of it, and with spring cleanup, we are encouraging people to take initiative and utilize the service,” said Nundahl. Spring cleanup is a free service undertaken by the town, where a free garbage and junk pickup is offered to residents from May 2 until May 12. There will be releases in the Town Page of The Drumheller Mail. “Over the winter we get things that accumulate, and it’s a small step from the town to encourage people to get rid of material for free,” said Nundahl. “It’s a good opportunity to get the cleanup going and start the summer on a good note.” Nundahl said Drumheller was the first municipality he’s worked for that does a “unique” service like this. The municipality began offering the service in the 1980s.

Dragons to scout prospects at weekend Spring Camp The Drumheller Dragons are hoping to find next season’s stars at the annual Spring Camp this weekend, seeing over 80 prospects attend to see if they can earn the right to wear black and orange. The Spring Camp is a chance for the Dragons organization to meet with the

players, see if they fit within the culture of the dressing room and where they could contribute. “You’re always trying to assess where you’ll be years down the road, and that’s no different this year,” said head coach and general manager Dan Price. “We’re looking for really elite guys who can step in next season and even players who could NEW

They also aren’t focusing in on a specific type of player to build certain aspects. “It’s broad across the roster, the good thing about our team is we’re very balanced. We have a deep defensive core, offensive core, and obviously Cheveldave is one of the best goalies in the league, so what we’re going to try to do is find good players who fit those molds to who will come up behind our current core veteran players when they leave.”

Returning Dragons will be helping out at the camp, acting as liasons for the young prospects, helping with coaching, and also acting as officials on the ice. “You’ll see a lot of familiar “We’re looking for faces out on the ice.” really elite guys The camp will be worth who can step in the trip for Dragons fans in next season and the valley. even players who “You get to see the future could contribute a of the team, these will be couple years from now.” the guys who will be wearDan Price ing our colours down the road.” The club will also be host“It’s all a matter of where ing another Spring Camp a player is in his develop- on Easter Weekend in Coment, we aren’t looking at chrane, to reach southern a particular age group,” said players.
