There were a few tense moments on Wednesday morning as residents woke up to ice collecting between Nacmine and the Drumheller Health Centre, pushing water levels higher. Shortly after 11 a.m. however, Mother Nature intervened and the river broke up, dramatically sending gigantic chunks of ice through the valley relieving the build-up. Currently there is a flood watch in the area with many streams filling their banks due to run off. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

OPINION

Run-o causing concerns in river and streams Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

There were some tense moments Wednesday morning as ice on the Red Deer River built up near Nacmine. Residents from Nacmine and communities to the west woke up to a shock on their commute into town, looking at ice buildup spanning from Nacmine to about the Drumheller Health Centre. With the ice,

the water continued to rise. Mayor Terry Yemen said the Town of Drumheller was monitoring the Red Deer River and on Wednesday morning dispatched a sta member by airplane to look at the Red Deer River levels and the potential for more ice. Due to high wind they were not able to carry out the aerial monitoring. By mid morning however, the ice began to break.

It’s a sure sign of spring when the lake at the base of the Airport Hill, off of Highway 9 forms.

There was also ice build-up on the Red Deer River near the Swinging Bridge, this broke up at approximately 10:30 am. About 45 minutes later at 11:15 a.m., the ice build up at the train bridge at Nacmine, broke up in a dramatic fashion. While the river level has subsided, there are still concerns with high water on many of the streams throughout the area. The province issued a ood watch Wednesday morning for areas in Central Alberta, including the Drumheller area. The River Forecast Centre has been in communication with aected counties and there are no immediate concerns regarding homes or public infra-

structure. At 11:09 a.m, Alberta Emergency Alert issued a watch for the area from south of Blackfalds to just south of Drumheller. This warning was preceded by a High Water Level Alert for Kneehill County, issued Monday, April 7 that warned of elevated water levels in streams due to run o. The Hesketh Creek Low Level Crossing west of Drumheller was closed, however the single lane bridge remains open. A number of roads listed at www.kneehillcounty. com have been closed due to washout. On Wednesday afternoon shortly after 5 p.m., a High Water Level Alert was sent out for Wheatland County because of el-

evated water levels in rivers and streams. A ood warning means stream levels are rising and will approach or may exceed full banks. Flooding of areas adjacent to these streams may occur. Mayor Yemen explains the high water levels are related to

the heavy snowpack on the plains and the warm weather. A number of creeks throughout Central Alberta are beginning to spill over their banks. The creek near Dunphy has caused some overland ooding.

Surface upgrade puts tennis court fundraising behind Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The proposed new outdoor multi-sport court is about $20,000 away from a spring start. The Drumheller Tennis Club spearheaded an effort to create new permanent courts in Drumheller. Rewind about two years ago

the club partnered with Golden Hills School Division and the Friends of DVSS and now have a site at the former court at the high school. The momentum continued and a number of community groups jumped on board to help. The project also grew from tennis to include pickle ball and

Fundraisers to build the multi-sport courts at DVSS have found they are coming up about $20,000 short for the project and

basketball. They are hoping to break ground this spring, but are still short a few dollars and cents. “Essentially we had to upgrade the type of asphalt and thickness of gravel pack after assessing the site and blueprints,” said Jillian Augey of the Drumheller Tennis Club. “This

causes us to need an additional $20,000. To “upgrade” to this better quality mix means a longer lasting court of more professional standing.” The project has received great support and was successful in its application for a provincial CFIP grant for $40,000. The Friends of DVSS have matched this amount and other donors including the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the Kinsmen Club, Cenovus and Canalta. An anonymous donor brought approximately $30,000 to the table in honour of Royal Canadian Air Force Pilots of World War II. The Town of Drumheller has also offered in kind support. Augey hopes the groups will be able to make up the shortfall and encourages residents who feel strongly about such a project to show their support. A donation can yield a tax receipt from the Friends of DVSS. For more information, to donate or suggestions, contact Augey at 403-436-0031.

DID YOU KNOW??? that with spring coming bylaw members will be doing increased cat trapping due to complaints of loose cats around town. People are asked to keep their cats home and if you choose to let your cat out in violation of the bylaw and he or she does not come home you may wish to consider calling the community bylaw enforcement office at 823-1363 to inquire if your cat has been trapped.

And Did You Also Know??? Many vehicles have been parked all winter on town streets in violation of the traffic bylaw which states a vehicle shall only be parked for 72 hours at a time. Municipal enforcement personnel in April will be focusing on vehicles that have been parked on streets for extended periods. With the warmer weather hopefully not far off bylaw officers are asking all citizens owning vehicles that have been parked unlawfully on town streets to please move them. Some have been there so long they have snow accumulation around them which with the melting snow will make it easier to move them off the streets. Please remember that bylaw officers have the authority to tow any vehicle which has been parked in violation of the bylaw. It is much preferable to have persons move their vehicles on their own. Please move your cars and trucks from the street if they have been parked for an extended period of time over the winter. If you have a car or truck on a town street and it appears to have been there awhile a bylaw officer may be contacting you to kindly move it. If anyone has any questions please call Greg Peters of Community Bylaw Enforcement at 823-1363.

Faubion puts the team’s volunteer count between forty and fifty people, and about a dozen of those have been with the team since day one in 2002. She said Dragons’ volunteers are so reliable, there are no concerns about any work going undone.

Our book choice was “A House in the Sky” by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett. It is a story many people remember reading about in the news back in 2008 and 2009. It is the true story of an invincible young woman, Amanda Lindhout. Her brutal home life began in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer. As a child, the author used money that she scrounged for to purchase National Geographic magazines. She would thumb through these at night, as an escape – imagining herself in exotic places found on the pages between the covers of these global publications. Working as a cocktail waitress in Calgary, she saved money to finance trips around the world, a desire that had been fueled by the magazines in her early years. Backpacking around third-world countries, Lindhout paid her way by working as a photo journalist, and later as a television reporter in war-ridden Afghanistan and Iraq. Lindhout also penned a travel column for the Red Deer Advocate. She always referred to Somalia as “the most dangerous place on earth,” but could not seem to hold back with her compulsion to go that one step further. In 2008, just four days into the visit, Lindhout and her companion, Nigel Brennan, were abducted while travelling on a dirt road outside Mogadishu . A determination and optimism that led her to danger was also what kept Lindhout alive for the next 15 months. Initially, they were dragged into captivity by heavily armed, masked gunmen. Over a period of 460 days, they were moved frequently between a series of abandoned buildings. Kept in these hideouts, shackled by chains, tortured, beaten, raped, dehydrated and starved, Amanda Lindholt struggled to survive and connect with her captors. She converted to Islam assuming this would prevent her captors from killing her. She searched for passages in the Koran to keep herself from being violated, but to no avail. Back home, the family could not come close to raising over a million dollars in ransom and the government had a policy to not succumb to paying for international hostage-taking. Negotiations continued for over a year. Amanda built her “House in the Sky” in her mind during times of rape, torture and despair. Today, this remarkable woman is an accomplished speaker. She has used her resilience and compassion to forgive and understand her captors and founded the Global Enrichment Foundation, a non-profit that supports Somalian and Kenyan women in need of help and education. This is truly a story that examines both inhumanity and humanity. It is a book that stays with you long after you have closed it. This author triumphed by fighting with her most powerful weapons - hope and compassion.

“One Night for NICU” is a local fundraiser in conjunction with the Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run. Our event raises money for the Calgary Health Trust Neonatal Intensive Care Units. We experienced firsthand how important the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are. On May 11, 2013 our twin boys, Marek and Cohen, were born extremely premature. They weighed 1 pound 8 ounces at birth. Sadly our oldest, Marek, passed away. We spent 131 days in the NICU with Cohen before we were able to take him home. We are forever grateful to the Foothills Medical Centre for the time we had with Marek and for giving us our baby Cohen. After being through this experience, we have heard many stories of local Alberta Families that have needed neonatal intensive care units. You never know when a family close to your heart will need the NICU. Lonnie and Korilee Farmer

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Dinosaur Trail Golf Club seeks tax relief Michele Scott| inSide Drumheller

The Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club gave a presentation at the regular meeting of Drumheller Town Council Monday night. Golf Club Superintendent Mitch Davidson and Board Member Paul Ainscough, representing the Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club, attended Council to request Town assistance with the club’s $25,000 annual municipal tax bill. The tax figure was listed as one of the major four challenges currently facing the club and outlined to Council at the meeting. Mr. Ainscough noted the golf club is the only facility in town not subsidized by the Town, and asked if there was any way Council could help out, they would appreciate it. “If we don’t have the money, it doesn’t matter what I do as Superin-

tendent,” said Davidson. The other major challenges the club listed were the water source, membership issues, and aging infrastructure. Davidson wants the message to get out that Dinosaur Trail is Drumheller’s public, community golf course. The Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club is a non-profit society governed by a Board of Directors, with current membership standing at 335 members and annual revenues of $1.2 million. Davidson said some short-sighted decision making in the past led to the Club’s current financial state, which shows the Club losing $75,000 a year, due in part to the $80,000 required per year to service a term loan debt. He explained the facility has just spent $10,000 on UV treatment and reverse osmosis treatment in order to provide safe drinking water on-site and avoid the club once again having

to truck in safe drinking water for the season. Davidson presented to Council that the club has its own water and septic, and pays for trash removal from the site. He said the water well they have on-site was drilled in the 1960s and is subjected to run-off from agricultural lands nearby. Ainscough and Davidson explained

the club is working hard to do some long range planning, including involving more young people in the club and goals to increase attendance and membership. Davidson said one of the programs the club is trying this year is a discounted golfing special on Mondays. The club is also offering a discounted membership rate to first time members.
