inSide support family's battle with cancer STREETERS Casino night toLosing faith in the Al- for the family with the casino wanting to help on the night Patrick Kolafa | InSide Drumheller

Spring officially started on Saturday, March 20 this year, and since then we have experienced a nice spell of warm weather, then a wind storm and now a winter snow storm. inSide Drumheller asked “You know it’s spring in Alberta when...”

Pamela Darow “It’s not snowing!”

Dawn Shaw “When you can put your winter boots away! I usually have to wait til June to do that, because you never know what May is going to do!”

Alexis Litchinsky “It rains slush!”

Andy Scott “When you break your windshield wipers on your car because you don’t expect them to be frozen due to the heavy snow! This is what happened to me this morning...”

In the spirit of community, friends, family and co-workers are rallying around the family of Mark and Margaret Bouchie to support them in a time of need. The family has racked up some very serious medical bills, and to help them a Dinner Funny Money Casino night is being held at Rosedale Hall on Saturday, April 24. The event includes supper by Double D Catering and lots of gambling fun. As they fight their battle with cancer, Mark Bouchie is grateful for the support his family has received. Mark, a corrections officer at the Drumheller Institution, and his wife Margaret, who many will remember as previous owner of Acute Barber Shop, were dealt a blow in 2002 when Margaret was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. Emergency surgery was performed to remove most of the tumor, and was followed up by chemotherapy and radiation. She was stabilized. The cancer recurred in October of 2008. After 10 months of chemotherapy, the treatment was not having its intended effects, and she was scheduled for surgery. There was a 6-7 week wait to get her in for her operation. Doctors along the way cited that allowing the chemotherapy drugs to clear from her blood as the reason for the delay. “We had a difficult time understanding the long wait for surgery, as this was an aggressive glioblastoma multiforme which was spreading very fast,” said Mark. Margaret’s health deteriorated waiting for the surgery, which was finally performed on November 16, 2009. In talking with the doctors following the operation, they were alarmed at how large the tumor had grown. When Mark pressed again about the wait, he was told there was a problem with bed spaces between oncology and the Foothills Hospital. Margaret was put back on the same drugs she was using before the surgery, that were ineffective.

berta health care system, and learning the tumor had grown back, and was affecting even more of her brain, a family decision was made to travel to Germany to seek a treatment called local hyperthermia and arterial chemo perfusion. After two trips to Germany, it was unclear if the treatment made much difference, and Margaret continued to deteriorate. On March 23, doctors in Calgary made the decision to stop all treatment, and refused to try a new drug called Avastin. “Calgary wanted to immediately check Margaret into Palliative Care the next day,” said Mark. “A prognosis of three weeks left to live was given. It was a shock to hear such a poor prognosis and we refused to give in.” The decision was made to try the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They flew to Chicago and then St. Paul. Once they rented a car, they drove immediately to the Mayo Clinic after being lucky enough to book an appointment. A number of examinations and discussions later, the professionals at the clinic went ahead with Avastin. She was treated on April 2, and after consultation with doctors from the Mayo Clinic and Calgary oncology, Calgary would now administer the same drug they initially refused. “Now Margaret has another lease on life and continues to fight against cancer and the other ailments from side effects,” said Mark. Mark is thankful for friends and family that have been so supportive through their time of great need. He says his employer, the Drumheller Institution, has been supportive and compassionate during his leave of absence, and his colleagues organized the casino night fundraiser. Through all of this, the family is facing a huge economic burden. The travel, lodging and medical expenses continue to add up. While Avastin is approved by Health Canada, Alberta Health Services at this time will not cover it for treating cancer in this situation. Organizers hope they can cover some of these expenses

Yemen declares mayoral candidacy, Shoff looks for third term

a little spicy but always welcome

More candidates are lining up to run for Drumheller Town Council including Councillor Terry Yemen who has decided to run for mayor. The Drumheller Mail reported in its April 14 edition that Tom Armstrong and Bob Hannah have decided to run for council. Hannah was with Yemen and Councillor Sharel Shoff on Thursday morning as they declared their intention of running in the fall election. “Over the last few years, I saw what I believed was too much of the tail wagging the dog,” Yemen said. “ I do believe I can bring in accountability and transparency. What I do believe is needed is a common sense approach in the decision making for the community.” Yemen will be concluding his first full term on council this fall, after being elected in a byelection in January 2007. He said what swayed him to run for

He bases much of his platform on his previous voting record which includes voting against the implementation of parallel parking, and against borrowing $6 million for the community facility after the response at a town hall meeting was to cap the borrowing at $5.2 million. Yemen would also like the town look for more ways to reduce costs and has not supported tax increases this term. Shoff will be running in her third election this fall. She has served on a number of boards and committees related to the operation of town services. Her key issues include councillors being more open to the public and she feels residents should exercise their ability to communicate with councillors more freely. She also believes the town should be run like a large business and have checks and balances in place like any other business to run efficiently. She feels strongly about working harder to remediate brownsfield sites. “We have a lot of land in Drumheller that is good land, prime commercial land we could develop into businesses,” said Shoff. She also wants to make sure decisions for the Town of Drumheller are made for the whole town. “When I say Drumheller, I am talking about the whole valley. I think some people forget we are talking about Rosedale, Nacmine and East Coulee,” said Shoff. “There are unique problems in looking after the whole area.” The candidates decided to announce their intention at this relatively early date to allow them the maximum time to consult with constituents. “I think I know what some of the issues are right now but I am sure there are a lot more issues,” said Yemen. “With the new people coming on stream this will give them a chance to find out what the issues are, and for Sharel and I (as serving councillors) there may be some issues that we will be able to take care of in the next couple of months. It is just an opportunity to get out and hear what the people have to say, rather than just trying to cram it into one month.”

by C. Aiello

This afternoon (April 16), I am attending the funeral of the father of one of my oldest and best friends. This is becoming a more common experience than either of us would like, but it is one of the trappings of middle age, which my friend and I are well into. Vern Schinnour passed away last week after a month long quest to discover the cause of his discomfort and weight loss. In the end it was nothing any of the doctors had thought it might be, but a pancreatic cancer instead. Upon its discovery and diagnosis, it claimed Vern’s body in less than a week. You will note that I said “body”, for Vern’s spirit had long belonged to God, and Vern knew it and reveled in it. Mr. Schinnour (I couldn't bring myself to call him Vern until I was into my 40’s) was always very business like, always well turned out, shoes shined, pleat in his slacks, shirts ironed, and a suit and tie when called for. Vern was a gentleman in a sense that seems almost anachronistic today. He valued loyalty, honesty, has a quick wit and a full laugh. He put God and family above all else. To me, he was an example of a man’s man. I read the other day about some Liberal MP bring forward in the House of Commons, a private members bill regarding government benefits (pension, old age security etc). It concerned immigrants and the time they must reside in this country before eligibility. Currently there is a 10 year period, which the private members bill would reduce to 3 years. As with all socialist programs, this looks very good on paper; it looks simple, equitable and free (just as simple, equitable and free as that other socialist program, Medicare). Immigrants to this country come for various reasons but one of them should not be to hurry off to the nearest government agency to sign up for whatever might be “free”. This is a wonderful country, and to live here is a privilege and a good fortune, but to take any of it for granted is the surest way to lose it. Dues must be paid, work must be done. You can’t come here from another country, expect all that its citizens enjoy, then as quickly as possible send for the relatives, with good news of all the wonderful freebies. Who will pay? Canadian citizens who have worked all their lives, or are still working toward a retirement that silly bills such as the aforementioned, can jeopardize. Like it or not, the biggest Ponzi scheme in the country is run by the government, and it is the Canada Pension Plan. It relies, as do all Ponzi schemes, on more and more investors (premium paying workers) every year than the number of those taking payouts (retirees). With people putting forward idiotic bills such as the one in question, it won’t be long before the number collecting payouts soon outstrips the number of new investors (workers, businesses) and your Ponzi scheme collapses. Except for that it’s a government run Ponzi scheme and your pocket is always open to the hand of government. 15l

Lori Stefanishion • inSide Drumheller Book Columnist Lisa See has not let us down in the books we previously read - Peony in Love as well as Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Yet another interesting story, Shanghai Girls, was our book of choice this month. Unfortunately, it was not as well-received as the first two. Some found it dragged out, others did not like the ending, while others did not find it all that believable. I probably liked it the most of everyone, but do agree her first two books were better. Set in China, beginning in 1937 the tale spans the lives of two sisters, Pearl and May. Life takes an unfortunate twist for these two pampered girls who pose as calendar girls and live the high life. Forced to marry, being sold by their father to pay off his gambling debt, they must move to America. The journey keeps you reading as you become absorbed by all the trials along the way through to the harsh reality of being detained on Angel Island, a humiliation they could not be prepared to face. Sacrifices, jealousies, heartbreak, loyalty and joy bind these sisters together throughout the book. A good description of their relationship would be “push-pull.” The importance of customs and traditions are obvious as we become aware of Chinese culture that is impossible to give up. The struggles and discrimination of Chinese immigrants in North America was a reminder of a part of history we tend to forget. This led to interesting discussion as we recalled events and people from when we were growing up and this prejudice existed. An significant example on how to make the best out of what you are dealt in life is a good lesson to take from this story.

Winter storm sweeps valley, causing widespread power outages Just as people were getting ready to enjoy spring due to the long warm spell experienced in March and beginning of April, last week the area saw a wind storm, which created chaos on the highways in the region, and now a winter storm swept the valley. On Tuesday evening, April 13, Environment Canada issued a winter storm warning for the region, predicting 5 to 10 centimetres of snow with winds gusting to 70 km/h. By Wednesday morning, the storm was in full force, with snow and wind generating blizzard conditions in some areas, making driving treacherous, causing power outages and downed telephone lines. Many schools in the region had to close for the day, and ATCO Electric engineers were again busy dealing with power outages across the area. The Drumheller Emergency Services were also called out

to deal with a transformer fire just north of Drumheller. Gerhard Schwarz, customer services supervisor at ATCO Electric, told inSide Drumheller the biggest problem for them during a winter storm is the heavy wet snow and the high wind. “The wet snow piles up on the wires, and then the winds come, causing the wires to flap together and the fuses to

blow, which they are designed to do. Then we are continually chasing it around, repairing the fuse and then the next one will go, so the engineers go from one to another to another. It started last night, right now, [Wednesday afternoon], we are experiencing some issues in the Rowley rural area as well as some in the wintering hills. The blinking of lights experienced is due to a combination of the wires connecting and the other reason is we have turned some systems off to repair some of the broken wires. When they are turned back on, you will experience the blinks.” Schwarz also said there was one mainline break in East Coulee on Wednesday which they were working on. The treacherous road conditions also affected the speed at which the power outages could be resolved. “We keep everybody safe, customers and staff. Our customers are pretty understand-

ing, especially when they can see what is going on out there with the weather.” Al Kendrick, director of Infrastructure for the Town of Drumheller told inSide Drumheller “We were a lot luckier than others, we didn’t have any major upsets of any kind yesterday [Wednesday], I

Following a public forum held on Thursday, April 8, aimed to give an overview of the project, as well as garner community feedback, a new brand has been launched. East Coulee Spring Fest resounding success Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

The 16th East Coulee Spring Festival took place on Saturday, April 10 and over 25 performers and bands from across the province played to full audiences at three different venues in East Coulee. The festival, a benefit for the East Coulee School Museum in partnership with the East Coulee Community Association, offers an opportunity for known and newer artists to perform and this year it hosted many returning artists as well as new groups, providing a wide range of live music such as folk, blues, jazz, rockabilly. The many volunteers who worked at the event together with artists performing at no charge to support the East Coulee School Museum, made the festival a great experience for all who attended. One of the new artists featured at this year’s festival was 'Fools Tongue', a band from Edmonton who played in the Green Room at 8 p.m. The band members, Luke Ertman, son of Morris Ertman, artistic director of Rosebud Theatre, vocalist and Chapman Stick player; Jeff Ramsey, vocalist and guitar player; and Caleb Caswell, on drums, were approached to play at the East Coulee Spring Festival following their appearance at the 15 Minutes of Fame festival in Rosebud. They decided to apply and got selected.

“We have been playing bars for far too long!” explained Ertman, adding the band had been playing for about three years and thought it was time to reach a wider audience. With a very different style to those on offer at the festival, they describe their music as alternative, folk rock and experimental in pop rock tradition, with elements of funk, jazz, and Latin music. “We were a bit nervous about playing here, we weren’t sure what to expect,” the band told inSide Drumheller, because of their different style, “but it turned out really well!” Ertmann introduced the audience to a relatively new instrument, the Chapman Stick, a member of the guitar and bass family, which has a full two-handed piano technique applied directly onto the strings. Extremely percussive, the instrument has a strong and distinctive bass voice and brings together the techniques of four major instruments: guitar, piano, bass and drums. This band’s first appearance at the festival was extremely well received by the audience, who asked for an encore after the Fools Tongue set finished and the band are hoping to be back again next year. See drumhellermail.com for a video preview of their opening act.

The Legislative Review

Jack Hayden M.L.A. Drumheller-Stettler Constituency

Province recognizes 136 Alberta teachers for outstanding job Teachers and principals from across Alberta are being recognized as 2010 Excellence in Teaching Awards semifinalists for their remarkable job of inspiring Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. This year’s 136 semi-finalists were selected from 338 eligible nominations. Nominees must show leadership, demonstrate creativity and innovation, work collaboratively with colleagues, and create positive and stimulating learning environments that motivate students to exceed their own expectations. Each nomination includes statements of support from the nominee’s principal or superintendent, a teaching colleague, and a member of the public. Semifinalists and award recipients are selected by a committee made up of representatives from the education community. The program honours semi-finalists across the province at regional celebrations.

In addition, semi-finalists can access up to $1,500 for professional development. From the 136 semi-finalists, 23 award recipients will be selected and honoured in Calgary on May 29 at a dinner and awards ceremony. Twenty award recipients will be able to access up to $4,000 for professional development; while three teachers will be awarded SMARTer Kids Foundation Innovative Use of Technology Awards and will receive a comprehensive technology package, which includes a SMART board. Alberta Education hosts the 22nd Annual Excellence in Teaching Awards with the support of the Alberta School Councils’ Association, the Alberta School Boards Association, The Alberta Teachers’ Association, the Association of Alberta Deans of Education, the Council on Alberta Teaching Standards, the Edmonton Journal and the SMARTer Kids Foundation. Albertans have celebrated Excellence in Teaching since 1989, with more than 8,000 teachers nominated and more

than 400 award recipients. For more information about the Excellence in Teaching Awards, visit www.education. alberta.ca and click on the teachers tab. The Alberta government has a clear plan for a strong economic recovery. An important part of The Way Forward is maintaining support for programs and services Albertans need most, such as health care, education and safe and vibrant communities. For more information on the plan visit alberta.ca. Alberta students receive a total of $100,000 in Persons Case Scholarships Twenty-five women excelling in their chosen fields of study will receive financial support through the Government of Alberta’s Persons Case Scholarships. The funding will help them pursue post-secondary studies during the 2009-10 school year. Persons Case Scholarships are awarded annually to students whose studies and career goals are expected to contribute to the advancement of women, or to those who are studying in fields where members of their gender are traditionally few in number. Two hundred and fiftyfour applications were

reviewed this year. The selection committee included representatives from government, post-secondary institutions and organizations committed to advancing the equality of women. Scholarships awarded range from $3,000 to $5,000. The scholarships are funded by the Alberta Heritage Scholarship Fund and awarded each year by Alberta Children and Youth Services, as the Ministry responsible for women’s issues. To qualify, students must be residents of Alberta for a minimum of three years and currently enrolled as full-time students at a post-secondary institution. Women and men are eligible for scholarships, with awards granted on the basis of academic performance in addition to their programs of study. The Persons Case Scholarship was established in 1979 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Persons Case. In 1929, Alberta’s Famous Five - Henrietta Muir Edwards, Nellie McClung, Louise McKinney, Emily Murphy and Irene Parlby successfully led the landmark case, in which a British Privy Council ruling declared women in Canada qualified as “persons” under the law. For more information

about the Persons Case Scholarship, visit www.child. alberta.ca/home. For a complete list of scholarships and bursaries available to students in Alberta, visit www.alis. alberta.ca. Existing drug coverage for seniors continues Proposed changes to Alberta’s seniors’ drug plan scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2010, have been delayed in order to address necessary legislative and regulatory changes and align with other government programs for seniors. Meanwhile, the existing seniors’ drug program will remain available to all Albertans 65 years and older. Seniors with this coverage will continue to pay a co-payment of 30 per cent of each prescription’s cost to a maximum of $25 per prescription. The existing program will continue to provide coverage for prescription drugs, ambulance services, clinical psychological services, and home nursing care. Questions about existing coverage should be directed to Alberta Blue Cross at 1-800-661-6995, or by email at www.ab.bluecross.ca, since they administer the seniors’ drug program for the Government of Alberta.

WHOare you?

is a weekly feature that profiles various young, professional Drumhellerites. Submit a "Who are you" for yourself, a friend or a co-worker online at www.drumhellermail.com under the 'inSide' tab. We'll call you to come in and have your photo taken.

Name: Joel Martin. Employer: Riverside Value Drug Mart. Job title: Front Store Manager. What do you like about your job? The Ainscoughs have been very generous towards my role in the store. I enjoy such freedoms as to explore my creativity and enforce common sense. Dreams or goal: To be the best uncle I can be to my future niece or nephew. (due. Sept 21). Hobbies and interest: I spend the majority of my free time watching movies or working out but if I could, I would spend my ideal day road-tripping with my girl. How long have you been in Drumheller? Two and a half years. What do you like best about Drumheller? The pace! After living in a touristic, very mainstream city like environment, I like the slower pace here, no hustle and bustle. If you could change one thing about Drumheller, what would it be? To see less empty store fronts, have more businesses open. Where are you from? Hamilton, Ontario If stranded on an island what tool would you need? We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

What’s in your iPod? Richie Kotzen, World War Z, Episodes of Family Guy. Favourite book: Everybody Poops by Taro Gomi. It pokes fun at itself without being absurd. It doesn’t examine the subject nor does it try to draw a reaction. Much like the title, it just is. As a companion book, I also have The Gas We Pass by Shinto Cho, much for the same reasons. Favourite movie: Halloween If you had a million dollars: We’re gonna need a bigger boat.

Who you like to have dinner with dead or alive? I wouldn’t enjoy sharing a meal with any dead people. A nice homecooked meal with all my extended family would be ideal. Words that you live by: “Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweatty things.” - George Carlin If you had a time machine where would you go? New Year’s Eve 1999. Best pizza I ever had.

Lacrosse opens season this weekend in Red Deer Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

Now that the ice is out of the Drumheller Memorial Arena, lacrosse players are going to be storming in. Badlands Lacrosse players haven’t been sitting idle however, they have been practicing in Three Hills for the last few weeks. This week they are back in Drumheller in anticipation of the season opener. The season starts this weekend for the players at the Eye Opener Tournament in Red Deer. All teams from Novice to Midget play two league games on the weekend. Members of the league include Red Deer, Lacoka, Three Hills (Kneehill), Olds, Drumheller and Innisfail. This year the association has 78 players signed up in all age groups. The Kneehill Midgets and Badlands Midgets have combined as one team under the Bad-

lands Raptors umbrella. The Badlands Lacrosse Association Tyke and MiniTyke Divisions start practices on Wednesday. They will be playing exhibition games and festivals rather than a travel league. The emphasis brought forward from the Central Alberta Lacrosse League for Tyke and Mini-Tyke is development rather than competitive lacrosse. There have been new rules and regulations brought forward in these divisions that will enable skill development and a fun atmosphere to learn both the rules and the skills of lacrosse. Badlands Lacrosse is hoping to start a junior program this year with hopes of joining a league next season. Any junior age players interested can contact Dave Powell at the Sports Room Source for Sports.

A Drumheller volleyball player has the respect of her peers and coaches in being awarded her college team’s MVP. Kali Wade has played volleyball for the Kodiaks at Lethbridge College for the last three seasons. This was her last year at the school and she was awarded the team’s top honour. Her family is proud of her accomplishments in three short seasons. In her first year as a Kodiak she shined right from the get go. “In the first tournament she was in (at the college level) at Mount Royal, she won Most Valuable Player,” said her father Doug Wade. “That was the best tournament she was ever in. There were teams from all across Canada, and they (the Kodiaks) weren’t supposed to do anything, and they swept the tournament.” In her next season, she was awarded the Alberta College Athletic Conference’s Athlete of the Week. While she is graduating
