“Dino Den” down to six finalists Michele Scott |inSide Drumheller

Mayor Terry Yemen has announced that six different businesses are the finalists in the Town of Drumheller’s “Dino Den” contest. The contest was open to residents wishing to present businesses ideas to the Town, with the criteria being they opened a business in the Drumheller municipality. The contest began in January and closed March 31. The six people whose ideas are moving forward have been notified and will be making their business presentations in May to the “Dino Den” partners. The partners will then select the “Dino Den” winner after the presentations. Dino Den partners are the Town of Drumheller, Community

Futures, Chinook Credit Union, the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce, and Drum FM. Three of the partners each contributed a thousand dollar prize for the winning business proposal - the Town, Community Futures and the Chamber. In addition to cash, the Town will provide a one year business licence, the Chamber of Commerce will provide a one year membership, Drum FM will offer a thousand dollars in advertising, and the Chinook Credit Union is supplying enhanced banking. Mayor Yemen said the businesses proposed by the Dino Den contestants will enhance the valley.

RCMP warn residents to lock up Patrick Kolafa |inSide Drumheller

Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins says it is important for residents to be vigilant about protecting their property. This comes after recent reports of youth prowling neighbourhoods, looking for an easy grab.

Hopkins says there has been an increase in reports of youths walking through communities checking to see if vehicles are locked. “Vehicles found unlocked are entered and anything of value is being stolen,” he said. The easiest way for residents to protect themselves is to lock up. “It is subsequently requested

that you secure your vehicles and remove anything of value out of sight,” said Hopkins. He continues that residents observing suspicious activities in their neighbourhood should call the local detachment of the RCMP at 403-823-7590.

DID YOU KNOW??? that with spring coming bylaw members will be doing increased cat trapping due to complaints of loose cats around town. People are asked to keep their cats home and if you choose to let your cat out in violation of the bylaw and he or she does not come home you may wish to consider calling the community bylaw enforcement office at 823-1363 to inquire if your cat has been trapped.

And Did You Also Know??? Many vehicles have been parked all winter on town streets in violation of the traffic bylaw which states a vehicle shall only be parked for 72 hours at a time . Municipal enforcement personnel in April will be focusing on vehicles that have been parked on streets for extended periods. With the warmer weather hopefully not far off bylaw officers are asking all citizens owning vehicles that have been parked unlawfully on town streets to please move them. Some have been there so long they have snow accumulation around them which with the melting snow will make it easier to move them off the streets. Please remember that bylaw officers have the authority to tow any vehicle which has been parked in violation of the bylaw. It is much preferable to have persons move their vehicles on their own. Please move your cars and trucks from the street if they have been parked for an extended period of time over the winter. If you have a car or truck on a town street and it appears to have been there awhile a bylaw officer may be contacting you to kindly move it. If anyone has any questions please call Greg Peters of Community Bylaw Enforcement at 823-1363.

All proposals must contain at a minimum, the following information: Description of food / or other items/ products or services being sold Description of equipment being used Hours of operation (seasonal schedule including weekdays) History of sales experience Prior to final granting of the Exclusive License, the successful vendor shall supply: Approval from the Local Health Authority Pay a $200.00 Vending Fee per cart. Any other permits required by any and all other Municipal/Provincial/Federal regulations and/or guidelines. Adequate insurance coverage A copy of a valid 2010 Town of Drumheller Business License Proposals are to be submitted by 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 15, 2014. They are to be sent to: Paul Salvatore, Director Community Services 703 2nd Ave. West, Drumheller, Alberta T0J 0Y3 Additional information may be obtained by calling 823-1316.

All letters are welcome and we encourage you to share your views with our readers. Here are some useful tips on writing your letter to the editor.

The story is a classic allegorical tale about a bus ride from hell to heaven. In his travels, the narrator encounters strangers who discover

the lessons they must learn in order to go on their journey toward heaven. “This story is a study in human nature, filled with revelation about the things that upset us, the grace that can change us and a point of view that challenges all of our preconceptions about love and life,” says director Morris Ertman. “If you like a story that not only grabs and entertains, but causes you to think, this is the play for you.” This new adaptation of The Great Divorce is written by Rosebud School of the Arts alumna, Kelsey Krogman, and will be presented as a part of the studies for students in the Mentorship Programme offered at RSA. According to Sarah Spicer, one of the RSA students in the production, “the show asks

It’s a holiday that, with a lot of hard work thrown in, brings a chance to do some good. Drumheller teen Mykenzie Toffan is travelling to the Dominican Republic this summer to help build a house for a family in need. And she already has her sights set on going

She said she’s thankful that her friends are willing to help out with fundraising and that she’s received some financial support from Cenovus and Western Chevrolet. Toffan speaks about her motivations for going on a trip such as this: “I’m hoping to help people don’t have the same kind of life that I get to live. I’m a privileged child and it’s just not fair that not every kid gets offered the same opportunities I am.” “I think it’s good I’m going on it at such a young age. It’ll definitely change my outlook on things as I grow up, too.” Toffan will be heading out to the Dominican Republic towards the end of July for the ten day trip. “It’s a great opportunity to see the world at a young age and help out.”

“One Night for NICU

is a local fundraiser in conjunction with the Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run. Our event raises money for the Calgary Health Trust Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

We experienced ďŹ rsthand how important the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are. On May 11, 2013 our twin boys, Marek and Cohen, were born extremely premature. They weighed 1 pound 8 ounces at birth. Sadly our oldest, Marek, passed away. We spent 131 days in the NICU with Cohen before we were able to take him home. We are forever grateful to the Foothills Medical Centre for the time we had with Marek and for giving us our baby Cohen. After being through this experience, we have heard many stories of local Alberta Families that have needed neonatal intensive care units. You never know when a family close to your heart will need the NICU.

Alex BIGGS Age: 26 Current Occupation: Graphic designer at the Royal Tyrrell Museum. How many dinosaurs have you drawn in your time there? Not as many as people think - probably hundreds. How did you get interested in graphic design? I was always really interested in hockey logos, skateboard art and race car liveries. How long have you lived here? Two years, I moved here when I got the job. Where did you live prior? Fernie, BC. I worked there for two winters, but I grew up in Calgary. What do you like most about living here? I think it would be the landscape - the hills. And the summer activities. What are your hobbies and interests? Skiing, biking, freelance design work. How have you changed

since leaving University? I’ve definitely become a better cook. What’s your favourite meal? A Thai curry or an Indian curry. I have a favourite spot in Calgary called the Himalayan. What’s your favourite sports team? The Calgary Flames. (Sean) Monahan’s pretty good. What would be your goals for the future? Design an NHL hockey team’s uniform. Or a Formula One Racing Team. How much time do you spend on social media? Probably more than I want to admit. A couple hours. Follow me on Instagram @ alexbiggs. If stranded on a desert island, what would you want? A ball. A tennis ball. To play with. And a machete would be nice, to chop down some coconuts. Final Thought: There’s too much green to feel blue.

Beard Bros - Robbie Colberg Robbie Colberg was born and raised in Drumheller and currently lives in Calgary with his wife Jordan (Augey) and three children. When he is not growing a beard, he can be found on the golf course or in a hockey arena with his family. Q: Why did you want to participate in the Beards and Bands event? A: Because my wife made me (laughs). No, because it’s the right think to do and I always do the right thing. Always. Q: How has Lyme Disease affected you? A: My sister-in-law Jill, and her brother Derek, are seriously chronically ill because of it. It’s affected their entire lives. And the fact that it is not recognized in Canada is maddening.

SOCIAL MEDIA VS. PRINT

Here it is in BLACK and WHITE...

OVERALL COMFORT 78% of Canadians read a newspaper each week (A statistic that’s been stable for 5 years!) 82% of people spend more or the same amount of time with print vs. 2 years ago Custom long boards for some serious shredding Devon Law, left, and Mackenzie Leitz, right, both in Grade 10 at Drumheller Valley Secondary School, display a long board they each made in Building Construction class. The two boards were made as a test run at the school, which is looking to add the board manufacturing to classes in September. Principal Curtis

LaPierre said he’s always on the look out for new things to interest students, and something that engages them is building a product they actually use. He also has snowboards and skis in mind for later on down the road. inSide photo Michele Scott

thought Fun Food for Easter You could also try substituting the mayo with Boursin cheese for a distinct flavor and creamier texture. You can make a cheeseball using any favorite flavor combinations you prefer. The base is generally cream cheese, softened and mixed with anything from onion, bacon bits, packaged ranch dip (or other variety), grated cheeses, spices, nuts, sun-dried tomato, etc.

I made this one using my favorite spinach artichoke dip without the mayonnaise (to form a more solid shape.) Replacing the mayo, I used a product that is a combination of Greek Yogurt and Cream Cheese and it turned out perfectly.

Here is a quick and easy cheeseball that will look great on your Easter table. You can use any favorite cheeseball recipe, coated in grated cheddar to give the orange hue to the “carrot.” (I had a blend of white and orange cheddar. Plain orange cheddar would look better) A handful of flat Italian parsley will finish the look of this carrot cheeseball.

34% of people are spending less time on Facebook than they were 6 months ago

This appy can also be made in the form of several long, thin carrots rather than one big one. Either way, it’s sure to be a hit!

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Tasks at work have certainly tried your patience, Virgo. Just when you are settled in, you get pulled in another direction very quickly. Save up those vacation days. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, do your best to get all of your ducks in a row this week. Keep distractions at bay and don’t allow social engagements to take precedence over more pressing matters. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, you will have to remain two steps ahead of everyone else to get a project done this week. Things are moving quite quickly now, so make every minute count. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 A challenge is on the horizon, Capricorn. But remain calm and you will handle every challenge that comes your way. Aries provides some extra help. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, some may call you stubborn, but “dedicated” might be a more appropriate term. Once your mind is set, it is hard to pull you off course, and this week is no different. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 You have plenty of energy to carry you through to the weekend, Pisces. A big surprise is in store in the coming days.

On April 10 Canada lost one of the greatest Statesmen in Canada’s history and by all accounts, from friend and foe, a true gentleman. Jim Flaherty, served as Canada’s Finance Minister from February 6, 2006 until March 18, 2014. He guided Canada’s finances through some of the most turbulent times in world financial history, and guided it with the determination that lead to one of the most successful economies currently in existence. Jim Flaherty, although not large in stature, managed to tower over most characters in Canadian Parliamentary history with his conduct and the abilities he exhibited while performing the duties of his office. As a strong voice in cabinet, the former Finance Minister advocated for social policy activism to help the disadvantaged, and especially the disabled; he embodied a sociallyresponsible fiscal conservative. A true measure of this man was the reaction of the Opposition Members of Parliament to the government Flaherty played a major roll in. Jim was described as, “tenacious, effective and dedicated politician who reached across the aisle.” These are the types of reactions that illustrate a quality that every person in public office should aspire to - putting the best interests of the people first. Flaherty was one of those rare individuals in public life who would admit fault in the name of doing what he felt was right. Jim allowed his principles to elevate him rather than treating them as though they were dragging him

down. A man of great conviction he fought with dignity and always with respect. In a speech he delivered to The Ivey School of Business in 2011, he said: “Public service is good for you. You will have opportunities to change the world around you in varying ways and to different degrees, large and small. It is the most satisfying and personally enriching career you will ever find. This, my friends, is priceless.” What has truly been priceless to this nation are the contributions and accomplishments of the Honourable Jim Flaherty. History will remember him as one of the steadying factors within the Harper government; a cornerstone of the federal Conservative government’s successes during their recent tenure. Three weeks before his untimely passing, on the day he resigned as federal Finance Minister, he made this final entry on his Twitter account: “It has been an honour to serve Canada. Thank you for the opportunity.” The humbling entry is fitting closure to the commentary of his life. A father, husband, statesman, and a true gentleman that epitomized in life what the word “Honour” means. Sincerest condolences go out to Jim’s wife, Christine, and their sons, John, Galen and Quinn. If you would like to share your condolences with the Flaherty family, you can do so online at www.commemoration.gc.ca. A full state funeral will be held for Minister Flaherty Wednesday, April 16 in Toronto.

Blades for bucks A rip-roaring floor hockey match was held at the Drumheller Secondary School floor hockey match with Drumheller detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Last year’s game was for fun, and teacher Jeff Messom suggested the team try something new, so DVSS senior student Justin Schinnour and Constable Willis of the RCMP organized the hockey game as a fundraiser for the MS Society through the Canalta Cares

team. Drumheller residents were generous again, helping the teams raise just under $600. Schinnour noted the event was planned in four days. DVSS won in a shoot out 9 to 8. Left photo by Michele Scott Right photo submitted.

CRA update regarding the Heartbleed Bug Online services restored The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is pleased to report that all of its online systems have been restored to full service as of April

13, 2014. Individuals, businesses and representatives are now able to file returns, make payments, and access all other e-services available through the CRA’s website, including all our secure

systems around the world. This represented a serious challenge for CRA, which has worked around the clock with Shared Services Canada to apply a “patch” or solution that addresses this vulnerability. Its effectiveness has been rigorously and successfully tested on CRA systems, resulting in restoration of our eservices. “Our systems are back online. We apologize for the delay and the inconvenience it has caused to Canadians. That said, the delay was necessary. We could not allow these systems back online until we were fully confident they were safe and secure for Canadian taxpayers,” said CRA Commissioner Andrew Treusch. “I would like to reiterate that interest and penalties WILL NOT be applied to individual taxpayers filing their 2013 tax returns after April 30, 2014 for a period equal to the length of the service interruption. This means individual tax returns for 2013 filed by May 5 will not incur interest or penalties,” said the Minister of Revenue, Kerry-Lynne D. Findlay.

“On behalf of the CRA, we are grateful for the collaboration of the public and our stakeholders, including our Community Volunteer Income Tax Program volunteers, the tax preparer community and the business community, for their cooperation and patience as we worked to resolve this service

interruption.” Further information is available through Frequently Asked Questions on the CRA website. The Agency remains committed to maintaining the confidence of Canadians by taking all steps necessary to ensure the confidentiality of taxpayer information.

Historic season ends for Drumheller Dragons Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

And what a ride it was‌ The Drumheller Dragons beat the odds time and time again this season, however a strong Spruce Grove Saints team were crowned the AJHL Champions last Tuesday night in front of more than 1,600 fans at Drumheller Memorial Arena. “I couldn’t be more proud of our guys. We fought a lot of adversity, we lost a lot of good players at the wrong times this year‌I think we brought some entertainment back into hockey, so I am proud of my players, I am proud of the ownership and am proud of who we are,â€? said coach Brian Curran. He adds that he is appreciative to the fan support throughout the season and the playos. It was the classic playo scenario, the Dragons were ďŹ ghting to stay alive and the Saints were looking to win a championship on their own terms. Spruce Grove scored early and held the lead through the ďŹ rst period. With 1:18 left in the ďŹ rst, the Dragons had a break with a ďŹ ve-minute powerplay,

but were not able to capitalize. It took ďŹ ghting o an interference penalty charged to Colton Vannucci early in the second period to inject some energy back into the game and Vannucci connected from Trent Ouellette to tie the game six minutes into the second. Defensively the Dragons staved o seven powerplays, but were not able to connect in overtime to stay alive. Only 19 seconds into overtime Jake Mykitiuk broke away from the pack and scored the winner for the Saints. “Hats o to Spruce Grove, they deserved it, their sta did a great job coaching and their players bought into it, and they are good champions,â€? said Curran. The Dragons’ run enlivened the Drumheller fans but also caught the attention of the league. AJHL commissioner Ryan Bartoshyk said the parity The Drumheller Dragons season ended in the south made for an exciting sea- in Game 4 of the AJHL championships. son. Coach Curran says there is potential to put “I looked back to the last time that it wasn’t Camrose or Brooks from the south, and I think it was 1999,â€? said Bartoshyk. “From the league perspective there was a lot of parity, and it shows that

anyone could be here and that is a good feeling for all our clubs to have at the beginning of the year.â€? The progress the Dragons have made impressed Bartoshyk. “I was at the ďŹ rst game when Brooks played Drumheller this season and to see the strides they made from Game 1 to here in Game 4 of the ďŹ nals is a credit to the organization itself.â€? The abrupt end to the season brings many changes for the Dragons, and this run brings life lessons. “I told a lot of our young players they need to take a look at our 20 year olds,â€? said Curran. “One of the experiences I hope they gain from it is to watch when a young man is ďŹ nished his junior career. They say, am I going to college or am I going to work? The life questions come. This is something I think the young players saw tonight and I hope it is ingrained in their brain. When you have an opportunity to go to a ďŹ nals like we did,

not a lot of teams are going to get that chance‌we had an opportunity to win a championship and what an experience in itself that is.â€? It will take the players a little while to get over the sting of the loss, but when they do coach Curran says there will be some good memories. “It was disappointing tonight, it was a very hurtful thing and I hope our guys learned some lessons, but when I look back and reect on the season I will look back with smiles,â€? said Curran. Looking ahead, he is conďŹ dent the right pieces are in place for success. “There are a lot of lessons from this but we could potentially have as good or better team next year which is very encouraging. We are going to have to make some moves but not too many and we can be a team that could come back and play very strongly next year,â€? said Curran.
