What’s in the basket? Kali Collett, 2 1/2, daughter of Pam and Casey Collett of Hussar wasn’t sure about meeting the Easter Bunny at Greentree Mall on Saturday, March 27, but the international language of chocolate seemed to break the ice. Easter is this Sunday, April 4, and Greentree Mall will be hosting its annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday, April 3. Children ages 0-6 will search for eggs starting at 10:30 a.m., followed shortly thereafter by youngsters ages 7-12.

Do any readers feel that these changes have improved the flow of traffic in downtown Drumheller in any way, which I believe was the original intent of the exercise? And a recent article in the paper suggested that Town

Council now may seek suggestions from the same provincial government department that came up with the above alterations to alter the downtown parking controversy! I think a popular song from some years back says it well; “When will they ever learn? When will they ever learn?” Sheesh. W. Dunbar

Justin Wolf “I don’t think it’s any different, except it’s finally finished!”

Chantel Reimer “I am not sure how I feel, I liked it as it was. It is probably safer for pedestrians but probably worse for drivers.”

Tracy Behuniak “I’m glad that it’s done but it should have been left as it was in the first place with the left hand turn.”

Worries about theft and vandalism has the owners of Valley Auto Recycling contemplating selling the statue of Jesus that has watched over Drumheller for years. Ken and Andrea Hodgins operate the automobile recycler in south west Drumheller. They have had their share of vandalism and thefts that have cost the business thousands of dollars. To build a fence around the business located at the former Prehistoric Park site is costly, and it may take selling the statue to protect their business. “We’re going to sell Jesus because we need the money to build the fence,” said Andrea. “We have to do something to keep the kids out.” Drumheller has been known as the dinosaur capital of the world for years, and before the Royal Tyrrell Museum was opened 25 years ago, one of the main attractions was Prehistoric Park. Nestled in the Badlands, the park contained dozens of models of dinosaurs, many designed and created by Tig Seland. When the park was abandoned, the Chamber of Commerce became the guardian of the dinosaurs, and they are now on display throughout town. Today, the gigantic statue of Jesus and a pterodactyl remain in the hills. Andrea says the only way to protect their business from the vandalism is to build a secure barrier, which the sale of the Jesus statue could finance. “They trespass on the property, throw rocks through all the windshields and they drive their motorbikes over our vehicles in the hills. They smash

She says one night thieves took every car stereo on site. Another night thieves were back for car doors. "It has been ongoing, but

it's getting worse. We are trying everything to get the site barricaded off,” she said. “You put signs up, they tear them down, you put barbed wire up and they just climb through it. They party in our vehicles and we find beer cans everywhere.” “The bikers and the quaders are just as bad. They want to see Jesus and the pterodactyl and the are ripping up and

down our property". Andrea says she plans to keep the pterodactyl, but Jesus will soon be for sale. The natural question is whether there is a buyer out there for the statue. “I bet if I go on e-Bay there is,” Andrea laughs. She says they are open to offers, or any ideas that would help solve their probelm of trespassers.

Spring Festival has its own magic Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Every year, like a burst of sunshine through the clouds, the East Coulee Spring Festival brings a ray of light to the valley and signals the changing of the season in music and song. This year’s East Coulee Spring Festival goes on Saturday, April 10 and featuring dozens of artists from near and far to welcome the season, and at the same time treat an appreciative audience to an eclectic mix of music. Call it roots, folk, funk, jazz, blues or rockabilly, for 17 years it has come from the soul. Organizer Brent Noland has been involved with the festival for about five years and attributes its longevity to the feeling that on festival day it takes on a life of its own. “There is something kind of magical", said Noland. “It is surreal and thrived…the locations conjure a spirit of spring fest. You can plan and organize all to you want, it takes on a life of its own.” That being said, the spirit begins at the organizing level, and it spreads easily. One trait of the festival that stands out from others is that all of the entertainers donate their time to help raise funds for the East Coulee School Museum. While many might think that may limit the list of entertainers lining up to get on stage, the organizers had a pool of 60 applications from musicians all wanting to play the festival. “The line up donates their time to a good cause. The musicians see it as a party, they get something different out of it than other festivals”, said Noland. There are new and old names coming to the party this year, including a strong line of local acts. Jenn Beaupre, who in the last year has been consistently making a name for herself performing with the Moscow National Ballet and for Olympic events, is on the bill. So is vocalist Madison Daly, the Wayfaring Fiddlers, Band O Coots, The Yelping Coyote, and the Fire Coulee Bandits to name a few. Others returning to the festival include the SadlierBrown Band, Tim Hus and John Rutherford. Noland is excited by a few new acts including Fools Tongue, a band rooted in the folk-rock tradition, but

builds in elements of a vast number of influences Marshall Lawrence “Doctor of the Blues, and the Kirby Sewell (pronounced soul) Band, injecting a healthy dose of Blue-eyed soul into the lineup. The festival goes from noon to midnight on Saturday, April 10, with performances in the Green Room and the Tea Room at East Coulee School Museum, as well as at the East Coulee Community Hall. There are children’s activities planned for the afternoon, along with the hours of good times and great music. Tickets for the East Coulee Spring Festival are available now at the East Coulee School Museum, Riverside Value Drug Mart, or by calling 403-822-3970.

be one of the uplink sites throughout the province for the auction. The reception begins at 4 p.m. with the bidding to commence at 5 p.m. Along with Drumheller, tarps will be auctioned for seven other WPCA Pro Dodge Tour events, and for the first time, rather than the auction being broadcast via satellite, it will be online. This will allow bidders to watch the bids tally in real time. In fact, some bidding has already begun. Those interested in purchasing a tarp can register a bid number and then post an offer online. The pre-bidding is cut off 24 hours before the live auction commences, and if the pre-bid is not increased during the live auction, it will be considered the successful bid. Even for those who are not bidding on the tarps, the auction is a great chance to meet some of the drivers, enjoy some snacks and refreshments and get into the Stampede mood. For more information on the auction contact the Drumheller and District Stampede and Ag Society at 403-823-9339 or visit www.halfmileofhell.com.
