wo weeks ago, the world was shocked by the tragedy that unfolded at the Boston Marathon. Though Drumheller is not nearly the same size, inSide Drumheller spoke with emergency services in Drumheller to learn what plans are in place should something similar befall our quiet, rural town. “There are many different scenarios and circumstances that could arise. Every community has to be prepared,” said Bill Bachynski, Drumheller Fire Chief and chair of the disaster services committee. “You would get the same reaction you’re seeing in Boston right now, just on a smaller scale. If needed, we would bring in people from as far away as we have to.” Various scenarios are outlined in the Town’s Municipal Emergency Plan, which are updated on a regular basis and the risk associated with each evaluated on a continuing basis. “They’re all rated and plans made appropriate to that risk. There is a plan in for the community, and that is to practice on a regular basis,” said Bachynski. Although many sce-

given the large numbers of people we sometimes have on site,” said Andrew Neuman, Executive Director of the Tyrrell Museum. Staff at the Tyrrell are trained to handle a variety of situations. Their primary goal is to ensure guests are evacuated from the building safely. “We have staff who have security and safety as a major part of their job. These individuals have some training in crisis management. One of the first things we do if there is any threat is to evacuate people from the threatened area and call emergency services. It is important to refer these emergencies to the proper trained authorities. One direction our staff are given is: should you notice a suspicious object or package, contact police. Under no circumstances should you tamper with or move the object,” said Neuman. In the end though, like with disaster services, the museum focuses on the most likely disasters that could befall the town. “We focus on the most likely threats like fire and severe weather, but our response to a bomb would be very similar,” said Neuman.

Drumheller has an entrepreneurial spirit, with small and medium businesses not only surviving, but thriving, never missing an opportunity to grow. Some of these opportunities may be outside the valley, the province, or even the country. Next Thursday, May 2, the Honourable Cal Dallas, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations will be in Drumheller to discuss the potential of looking beyond the valley walls for opportunity. “It is an opportunity to discuss what we do in International and Intergovernmental Relations and how that can be directly positive for businesses throughout Alberta, to talk a little bit about these opportunities to engage internationally, and what export can do for a business and the community,” Dallas told inSide Drumheller. International opportunities, he says, come in a variety of ways beyond simply exporting a product. There are myriad ways to build international relationships, including through tourism. “We are going to have people along who have specific tourism expertise, we are going to have agricultural expertise,” said Dallas. “We have six international offices in Asia. These offices are working to strike relationships, surface op-
portunities, and analyse the market and be able to interact directly with businesses throughout Alberta.”

tion and Drumheller, despite not having an MLA as part of the governing party, is seeing a number of ministers coming through the valley. Finance Minster Doug Horner was in Drumheller before the budget came down, and Culture Minister Heather Klimchuk was through last week. “That is what we were elected to do, govern for all Albertans. What you are seeing is our commitment,” said Dallas. “We are going around the province and working really hard. We know the success of these communities is based on a lot of factors, but seeing small business succeed is critical to the sustainability of our communities.” Manager of the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce Heather Bitz says Drumheller was selected to host one of 10 of these conversations throughout the province. “It is definitely going to be interesting,” said Bitz. “We look at it as a positive opportunity to bring something else to our community and an opportunity for business owners to get involved and have a conversation with the minister.” The meeting is slated for Thursday, May 2 from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. at the Badlands Community Facility. Drumheller RCMP are investigating an arrow found in the underside of the World’s Largest Dinosaur last week. Last Thursday morning sta at the World’s Largest Dinosaur noticed an arrow in the torso of the World’s Largest Dinosaur. This was not the ďŹ rst time it has happened. “We called the RCMP and they took a statement,â€? said Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce manager Heather Bitz. “It will leave a hole and that’s not good.â€? She said this is not the only recent act of destruction. Last week they had to clean some graďŹƒti o the World’s
Largest Dinosaur. The Drumheller Fire Department helped remove the arrow Friday afternoon by utilizing its snorkel truck. “The biggest concern, and the RCMP say it too, is that someone is shooting this type of arrow in the town limits. That’s a little worrisome,â€? said Bitz. Sta Sergeant Art Hopkins said a bow and arrow is not considered a ďŹ rearm and the ďŹ ring of the arrow has to be taken in context. At this point, they don’t know if the arrow had been shot in the middle of the night with no bystanders, if the act happened in such a way that it threatened people’s safety, or if in fact, the dinosaur was the intended target. At the very least, he said the person who shot the arrow could face charges

‘419’ by Will Ferguson This month’s book of choice was “419” by Will Ferguson. Everyone in my book club had favorable comments on both the story line and the author’s talent for writing. He did a fine job connecting several different subplots into the main theme. In the beginning, it is a little confusing, but it does all come together. The term 419 is the section of the Nigerian criminal code dealing with obtaining funds illegally. The “scammed” character and family are in Calgary – so the book hits very close to home. It is interesting to picture the familiar scenes described throughout the story. This novel is the perfect example of how easily an intelligent family man can be drawn into these types of dangerous scams. Other parts of the book show you how the Nigerian succumbs to a life of such corruption, how their system works and the elements involved. You see both sides of the picture in this story. I think it is a good learning lesson for everyone who reads this

I have an opportunity to listen to several different perspectives around the community. How long have you been here? I started here in October. Where are you from originally? Nova Scotia. What do you like most about living here? The community spirit and quiet. Any destinations on your bucket list? Machu Pichu, because it’s such a spiritual place, and Thailand. Who would you like to hang out with for a day? Oprah. She’s a very intelligent, savvy, and entrepreneurial woman. Any hobbies? I build furniture out of recycled
wood and willow. Do you collect anything? When I go to different places, I like to grab a rock, take it home, and write a note for each describing it and where I found it. Favourite movies: To Sir With Love, because it is the most impactful movie I’ve watched, and Freedom Writers. Favourite books: The Celestine Propechy by James Redfield. What would you do with $1 million? Start a consulting and motivational speaking business and each time I would speak, I’d donate to and volunteer in that community. Dream Car? I love riding my motorcycle. I would love a souped-up Monte Carlo. Any words of wisdom? You can never fail, unless you give up and do what you got to do.

Rotary ready for White Elephant Sale
A Hi-Way 9 Express driver with 36 years experience behind the wheel for the company has been selected as Canada’s top driver. Brian Bertsch was selected as the 2013 Highway Star. He was in Montreal on the weekend of April 12-14 to receive the award. The prize included $10,000 cash, a trip for two to Montreal to receive the award as well as a number of other prizes. He is humble in his acceptance. “I never thought I would win something like that,” said Bertsch. “I am just a guy who went to work everyday.” Bertsch joined Hi-Way 9 in November of 1976, after a short stint with CN. Children throughout the Valley are stepping up to the plate for another exciting season of the quintessential summer pastime; minor baseball. To help kids prepare, the Drumheller Minor Baseball Association is bringing in professional player Geo Freeborn for a baseball camp. “He came up with the idea of smaller communities doing these camps, so he’s coming out here for the very ďŹ rst one,â€? said Lyle Cawiezel, president of Drumheller Minor Baseball. Freeborn was a pitcher for the Canadian Junior national team in 1999 and Team Canada in the 2011 World Baseball Challenge. Freeborn also played with Britain several times in European Championships. He will be joined by other professional players Tony Wyllie, Ryan Kennedy, and Garrett Regan. The camp is scheduled for May 11 at the Newcastle Ball Diamonds. So far this year, the baseball association is looking at two teams. Registration was good, with a tee ball team and rookie team both ďŹ lled. This year also marks a change of direction for Drumheller Minor Baseball. At their most recent annual general meeting, which was held in March, a brand new board was elected. “Hopefully we can continue on and make a go of it,â€? said Cawiezel. There are a few things the Chamber is asking residents to keep in mind this year; don’t let children run on to the street, make sure animals are ready to be in the parade, and don’t let oats stop on the route. Those interested in being in the parade are asked to keep an eye out for registration information at a later date. “There is no fee to enter the parade. The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the parade for over 50 years,â€? said Clark. “It’s the perfect chance to get people to start thinking about what they want to do for their oat to celebrate Drumheller’s history.â€?

In my last column I vowed to run this year’s Dinosaur Half Marathon and get into shape. The question is, how to start getting in shape to run? I’ve never run as a regular activity and certainly not with a goal in mind. Do I just run as far and as often as I can? Morgan Syvertsen, a running, swimming, biking machine, gave me some advice on how to start. “The first thing to do is establish an aerobic base. To do that, you go out and run really, really slow, going as far as you can go for about half an hour. Then, you keep building it up from there. The baseline is being able to run and still

I started off running around the track at the Badlands Community facility doing just that; slowly moving along, listening to some music for inspiration (I can occasionally be seen lipsynching or playing air guitar to whatever song I’m listening to as I run). I’ve also been alternating how I run. I feel like my cardio is coming along, but my muscles are holding me back. During the week, I’ll run shorter distances, but at
a fast pace, to train my muscles. On the weekend, I’ll do a long run at a slower pace. Syvertsen had another piece of advice for those new to running. “Also, it helps to adopt the run/walk approach so you don’t burn out as fast. For example, you run 10 minutes and then walk 5 minutes. Over time, you increase the amount of time you run and decrease the time you walk until you’re running the full time,” said Syvertsen. I’ve also managed to kick my Coca Cola addiction. I had gone coldturkey February 19, and since then have only had a few. I’ve lost around 10 pounds since then. Hopefully, the weather keeps getting better so I can hit Drumheller’s trail system. I’ll see you out there on the run!
