Most neighbours figured Newcastle’s Bob Davidson had simply hung his laundry out to dry, when in fact he was the first victim, er… supporter to be struck by a group of merry pranksters, known as the Chinookers Relay For Life Team. He came home on Tuesday afternoon to find his home decorated with supportive undergarments. He immediately hit the street going door-to-door trying to match up the bras with neighbours hoping to find the culprit(s). Coming home, he found a letter explaining the phenomena (and saving him from explaining to wife Vicky why women’s underwear was all over the house). The Chinookers told him they would ‘graciously’ remove the decorations for a donation of $20, and send them to another deserving victim for a small fee of $10. For the price of $50, he learned he could send the decorations to the person of his choice, and have an insurance policy to see them never return to his doorstep. The display of support made its way to Joyce and Rick Bell’s home in Greentree, and then returned to Newcastle to adorn Irv and Corrine Gerling’s home. Doing the decorating are (l-r) Jessica Garrett, Louise Donauer and Karen McCool.

inSide STREETERS Last year a Sodium Working Group was created, chaired by Health Canada to find ways to reduce sodium in the Canadian diet as high levels of salt have been associated with increased blood pressure, which is a risk factor for stroke, heart attacks, kidney disease and heart failure. inSide Drumheller asked “Are you aware of the risks associated with too much salt in your diet and has this changed your eating habits?”

Dave Hamm “Very much so, I buy products with no or low salt content and use sea salt at home. I have a medical condition where I can’t eat much salt in any case.”

Elizabeth Yeoman “I don’t really care because I like eating anything!”

community concerns and our staff concerns at these sites, and they are feeling that this is exposing them to risk,” said Weeks. “Basically, we are putting our plans on hold so we can do a proper review. It might take six months, it might take a year, but the idea is we can get in there, take a good look at the activity on the site, the number of incidents that are occurring, and work with the staff to make some of the decisions moving forward.” While Alberta Health Services has halted the removal of on-site security personnel from rural hospitals, it intends to go ahead with the mobile unit. “Basically, where our hospitals don’t have security on-site, we’ll provide mobile coverage for the next little while,” said Weeks.

He explains the original changes were an attempt to redeploy resources. By removing the on-site service and dedicating the mobile unit, it was hoped they would realize some savings. One area he is optimistic about retaining savings in Alberta Health Services is contracted security. Paladin will now deliver security services to the rural hospitals. “We’ll realize some savings there, and we will put it towards the mobile coverage,” said Weeks. He adds the security will be high quality. “Alberta Health Services has reduced from 15 different security contract providers to one, so we will really keep the management and quality close to our chest,” he said. “The company we have hired is actually providing

enhanced security training for every health care security provider they are giving to us, so some of the training ,in some cases, will be better than what the in-house staff had, and certainly more up to date.” He said Alberta Health Services is responsive to community needs. “We always keep an open mind, and are always committed to the fact if something changes in a community, we will re-look at that and redeploy our resources as required anywhere in the province," he said. Nelson said the changes to contracted security at the Drumheller Health Centre would be relatively seamless, as Paladin has hired the existing security providers onsite.

For the time being, the Drumheller Health Centre will continue to be served by on-site security. The Drumheller Mail told readers in its January 6, 2010 edition that Alberta Health Services was planning to remove on-site overnight security, and replace it with a mobile unit that would oversee facilities in Drumheller, Three Hills and Stettler. Alberta Health Services has since said they will retain staff for the time being. This comes as welcome news for Judy Nelson, chair of Big Country Victim Services. She had concerns about the loss of security for the protection of staff, and for the protection of clients of victim services. “It was what we wanted,” said Nelson. “With security in place, we knew it was at least safe.” This comes after Nelson had an audience with the Minister of Health Gene Zwodesky, outlining her concerns. She said it was productive and he seemed genuine about safety. “I found him very sincere, and he shows his sincerity as he follows through,” she said. Tony Weeks, executive director of Protective and Parking Services for Alberta Health Services, said while some have characterized the changes to security as a reversal, he said they are reasThe Drumheller Health Centre will retain its on-site security after Alberta Health Services reacted to comsessing the situation. “We are listening to the munity concerns about safety at hospital sites. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Last year, property crimes in Drumheller went up about 20 percent. These include theft, break and enters, mischief and damage to property offences. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins says there are a few ways businesses can protect themselves. He says alarm systems help, and having the store illuminated can also make the business less of a target. “These people don’t want to be seen and they don’t want to be heard, so if you can ad-

dress any of these issues, it one; increases the possibility of them being seen, or two; increases the possibility of them being heard, they will go somewhere else,” said Hopkins. He says in their investigation it appears these are not sophisticated operations, nor do they involve employees. They are crimes of opportunity. “They are thieves of convenience,” said Hopkins.

Town of Drumheller reminded of its Naval history Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

As part of their centennial celebrations, The Royal Canadian Navy visited Drumheller on Monday, April 26 and presented the Town of Drumheller with a plaque depicting the history of HMCS Drumheller at Town Council. During his presentation, Commander Ron Pumphrey, Commanding Officer at HMCS Calgary, based at Esquimalt, British Columbia, explained they were touring to pay tribute to the towns and to talk and

pay respect to veterans. Cmdr. Pumphrey said the corvette HMCS Drumheller played an important role in the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. “When people think of Drumheller, they think the museum, the dinosaurs, at least my son does! But I think more towards the Navy, and I am quite proud about what you have done and the support given. I don’t know if you realize but the town actually used to send care packages and parcels to people from this ship during World War II

as well so it is an interesting history that is here.” In September 1943, the ship, under the command of Tony Storrs, was deployed to protect convoys at a critical stage of the Battle of the Atlantic and was subjected to repeated U-boat attacks. For this service Storrs was awarded the Legion d’Honneur and the Croix de Guerre avec palmes. Cmdr. Pumphrey talked about the significant role The Royal Canadian Navy plays in providing security for the sea trade, as Canada is surrounded by three

oceans, Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic, explaining the prices of goods in grocery stores would be much higher without the Canadian Navy. “I have been to quite a few places around the world, and I will tell you Canada is the best part of the world to be, and I can say that without question,” he concluded, adding “I’d like to give my own personal guarantee from all the sailors, right from our highest Admiral down, that we will continue

to do what we can to protect those sea lines, to protect your interests that are out there.” During his presentation to council, Cmdr. Pumphrey was joined by Cmdr. Sylvain Belby, Executive Officer, HMCS Calgary, Lt. Cmdr. (ret’d) Doug Bourne, from HMCS Tecumesh, Calgary, Ltn. Cory Titsing, Area Cadet Officer, Lt. John Ibbotson, Commanding Officer of the RCSCC Furious, and members of the Drumheller Sea Cadets.

So there’s this new kid who wants to be Premier of Alberta. She’s the leader of a party that has risen in popularity over the last 12 months. Why? Well, partly because the new kid is new, and the party she is trying to replace is old and tired, but it goes deeper than that. This new kid is something special, something never before seen in this province. She’s a woman, and who doesn’t like women, except misogynists (of which I have more than once been accused of being). She’s smart and well educated, with degrees in Economics and English. She has experience in both politics and the workplace. Lastly, she’s good in front of a camera or behind a microphone, she’s personable and she’s sincere. Danielle Smith is leader of the Wildrose Alliance Party, and she and those supporting her believe that Wildrose is the future of this province. It happens that I am one of those supporters. The time has come to replace the government that is now in power, and which has lost its touch with the people of this province. Replacing a sitting government is no small feat, it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of money. Regarding the latter, Danielle Smith has been accused of being backed by big oil companies, but when financial figures of the province, political parties were made public two weeks ago, there was nary a big oil contribution to be found in the Wildrose books. Danielle Smith and the Wildrose Alliance Party are backed and financed largely by grassroots supporters looking to put Alberta back on track; back on a conservative track. It’s time.

They came, they saw, they stuffed two busses. Through the generosity of Drumheller residents, the Salvation Army can continue to provide kids that use the food bank with lunch and snack items following the second successful Stuff the Bus campaign. Despite an ongoing drizzle on Wednesday afternoon, volunteers accepted groceries from residents, and were able to fill approximately two buses full of groceries at the ATB parking lot, according to organizer Heather Colberg. This was the second event of its kind organized by Colberg. In exchange for wearing jeans to work last

Wednesday, employees could donate a bag full of groceries to The Salvation Food Bank. The last Stuff the Bus drive was in August, last summer. The campaign began at 10 a.m. and by 11 a.m. the donations started to pour in. At 2 p.m., they were scrambling to unload the remaining items so the bus could get back on its route to pick up school children. ATCO Electric in Drumheller provided an awning for volunteers as they toiled away, and Water Pure and Simple allowed volunteers to use a van to take the donations into storage. Lieutenant Matt Sheils of The Salvation Army said the food drive came at the right time. So far in the first

quarter, about 300 have been served by the food bank, of those, about 100 are children. Approximately $25,000 worth of donated food has been distributed in the first three months of the year. The food bank’s stock of food for children such as lunch and snack items to take to school had dwindled to such a point, The Salvation Army was purchasing food to meet the need. The food drive brought in about 200 milk crates of food, with an estimated value of $6,000. Sheils said the food drive should keep the food bank relatively well stocked until the annual fall food drive in November.

The University of Victoria, B.C. has a rabbit problem. Up to 1500 rabbits inhabit the grounds of the university, destroying vegetation, digging holes, and leaving droppings everywhere. The City of Calgary has a coyote problem. The varmints boldly walk the streets in mid day, snatch pets from backyards, and have even bitten small children. All these actions would suggest the coyotes have a problem, they are hungry. Is it just me, or is this a solution for the university and a possible opportunity for the City of Calgary? Rabbits, coyotes, it’s a natural prey/predator equation. Somebody please get UVic and the City of Calgary talking to one another. 17L

Performance testing on the new wind turbine installed at the Drumheller Institution has resulted in a delay in operating it. The turbine was installed in December to help offset some of the

ministrative services at the institution, told inSide Drumheller that the brake lining was part of the equipment which didn’t meet the expected performance specifications. “In order to prevent any unnecessary risk of breakage to oth-

some time to get the replacement. However, she estimated the part should be delivered late April, beginning of May and they are hoping to have the turbine up and running soon after.

What do you do in your spare time? I like to read and write, I am working on a novel right now, a mixture of Harry Potter and Twilight, but better! I also like to hang out with my friends, and watch movies, I love movies. Your life’s best achievement? So far it’s graduating. When I finish writing my novel, I’ll try to go back to school, to study to be a drama teacher. What are your strengths? I am a really easy going person so it takes a lot to upset me, I can take everything with a grain of salt. Any weaknesses? I am too nice for my own good. Any bad habits? I am addicted to Spitz (sunflower seeds), but the green bag ones only. I can go through a bag in two or three days. Three words that best describe you? Enthusiastic, easy-going and caring. What makes you happy? When I hang out with my best friend, Melissa. Or when I write a really awesome scene in my novel. If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? I would really love to have a big house with a horse, my parents to get along and to go on a really long vacation with all my friends. If you could have one super power what would it be? I’d like to be able to control fire, and if I could have my way, it would be purple! If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you give yourself? Pay attention in school and homework is a good thing! Words to live by? “Love is the only war worth dying for” - Ville Valo (lead singe of HIM)

Happy Mother’s Day If the shoe fits… 50 registered for Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Big Country Anti-Violence Association (BCAVA) is ecstatic to have about 50 men from the community willing to strap on high heels to raise funds and awareness for a good cause. The first Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: Men’s March to Stop Sexual Assault and Gender Violence, in Drumheller, is slated for Wednesday, May 12 at Greentree

Mall, with a barbecue to follow at Freson IGA. The event is where men from all walks of life attempt to trek a couple laps in women’s shoes, the higher the heel the better. Momentum for the event has taken off. “It is much more than we anticipated, so we are super excited about our turnout,” said Cora Bolt of BCAVA. “When we started out, we said if we can get 20-25 men to sign up, we would be super excited, and we’ve doubled that in our registration, so it turned out to be way more successful than we thought it would be.” She said the key was men daring each other to strap on the

heels. “It’s a great cause, and once we were able to get to some community members on board, and go to other men and say ‘here is some of the men on board,’ they were more than willing to join up. I think it helped having men challenge other men,” said Bolt. The committee had a rough fundraising goal of challenging each participant to raise $100, but she has learned many have surpassed that goal. “Some are having fun with it, and setting their own goals like, ‘If I meet this much, I’ll wear a skirt,’ or let a friend do their makeup,” said Bolt. Half of the funds raised by the program will go back to the BCAVA for a transportation fund set aside to help victims who are fleeing situations, and need to get to safe housing. Part will be used for education and awareness. The second half of the funds are earmarked for the Association of Communities Against Abuse out of Stettler, to be used for treatment and resources for those who have been victims of sexual assault. “They certainly serve our area as well,” said Bolt. “They used to provide outreach counseling to Drumheller, but because of staffing they haven’t been able to do that. So we thought if there is an opportunity to help the system with some finances, hopefully we can get that service back to our community.” Beyond the funds, the event has an important role in raising awareness. “In doing this event, we want people to be talking about sexual assault, and gender violence. We want people to come and see what they are doing, and then in their smaller circles have discussions about it. Are we saying this is an issue in our community? Not necessarily, but we feel

it is important for people to talk about the fact this can happen, and how to prevent it,” said Bolt. The event begins at 11 a.m. on May 12. Bolt asks participants to come at least 20 minutes early to prepare for the event. For the participants, the shoes

are in. Organizers have set Friday, May 7 as a day that participants can collect their shoes between 6 p.m. and 7p.m. at the Civic Centre. For more information on the event, contact Marian Ewing at 403-820-7240.

Man receives probation for possession of stolen property, assaults Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A young man whose move to Drumheller was designed to help him get on the straight and narrow, is now on probation after being sentenced on a number of charges including assault, possession of stolen property and mischief. Andrew Edwards, 29, was in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, April 23 for sentencing. He pleaded guilty to possession of stolen property, possession of drugs, assault with a weapon, assault, mischief and a number of breaches on an earlier date. Edwards was picked up on September 29, 2009. RCMP in Drumheller were alerted to a stolen Audi from Calgary in town. They placed surveillance on the car, and Edwards and a number of other individuals were observed in the car. The car was pulled over and the occupants arrested. Upon searching Edwards, police discovered seven tabs of oxycontin and a stolen iPod. When asked if he had any other stolen property in his possession, he admitted to having car stereos at his residence. When police searched, they found a number of stolen items. According to an earlier police release, many of these items were from a rash of thefts from vehicles in the Midland area, and have since been returned to their owners. Edwards was arrested again following an incident on October 12 of last year. Edwards was at home with an acquaintance when he insisted the two smoke a joint in the garage. The guest refused, and when a youth known to Edwards approached the house, Edwards told the youth to grab the guest. The guest was punched and kicked and received stitches as a result of the attack. Edwards admitted to kicking the victim. Edwards was also sentenced for allegations arising on January 19, when police were again alerted to his activities. His former girlfriend alleges on January 14, he threw a cell phone at her and struck her. On January 18, his girlfriend also alleges she observed Edwards drinking and using illegal drugs, constituting a breach of his release conditions. The two went for a walk and Edwards broke two windows at The Salva-

tion Army Church. When they returned to the home. he assaulted his girlfriend again. She fled the home and obtained shelter with a friend before calling the police. When the police came to arrest Edwards, he showed resistance to the officers. He has remained in custody since the arrest. The court heard that Edwards had had difficulties all his life, and was living in a group home by age 12. His father takes care of his fi-

nancial matters and about a year and half ago purchased a home in Drumheller for his son to reside to remove him from some of the negative influences in Calgary. A pre-sentence report said Edwards was a moderate risk to reoffend, but the risk increases with his use of alcohol and street drugs. The Crown was satisfied the three month of pre-trial custody (giving credit for six months) filled the punitive goals of sentencing. The Crown expressed con-

cern of recidivism of the offender if he continues to reside in Drumheller without daily support, and without access to some of the resources that would help him. He suggested a conditional sentence order rather than probation. That way, if there was a breach, Edwards could be taken into custody to serve his sentence, rather than being charged with a breach of probation. Judge Shriar, in sentencing recognized that many consider Edwards not wel-

come in the community, but could not dictate where Edwards lived. He was given two years probation. For the first year he is to abide by curfew from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and is barred from having company at his residence between those hours. He is also to have no contact with a number of named individuals, and is to complete 200 hours of community service or structured activity.

Be sure to pop in to Drumheller McDonald’s on May 5 as the restaurant, along with more than 1400 McDonald’s Restaurants across Canada, will be celebrating McHappy Day 2010. On that day, not only will customers be supporting McDonald’s fundraising effort, but they will also have the chance to be served by a local celebrity as McDonald's is inviting local community leaders, celebrities and very important persons to work alongside the staff for an hour or more on McHappy Day. Originally started in 1977, McHappy Day was created as a fundraiser where a dollar from the sale of every McMuffin® sandwich, Happy Meal® and Big Mac® sandwich is donated to local charities helping children in need. This has since become a yearly event, successfully raising more than $2.8 million last year, which was the 16th edition of the company’s longest-running and best-known national fundraising event. This year, the Drumheller McDonald’s will be donating to the new St. Anthony’s School playground and Ronald McDonald Houses of Alberta.

Golf auction expected to top $50k Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club is confident the annual auction will put it in position to break ground on the new tournament facility this season. The Dinosaur Trail Golf and Country Club held its annual dinner and auction on Saturday, April 24 at the Stampede Barn. Manager of the Golf Club Scott Westman said the auction was a great success. “We had increased attendance and a lot of good people that were bidding, and a lot of items on the block,” said Westman. While they are still tallying the result, he believes the total will be over $50,000. Some of the big items included a houseboat trip for 10 in the Shuswap with Twin Anchors that went for $2,400. Another popular item was a bottle of wine a week for a year, offered by Jerry’s Liquor store, which fetched $1,300. Golf trips to neighbouring courses also sold strong. The reserved parking spot at the golf course also fetched top dollar. One fun tradition is the auctioning of a box of Bison burgers from auctioneer Derek Dekeyser. It fetched in the area of $1,000 after its second appearance on the

block with an impromptu auctioneer. The auction is dedicated to the tournament facility project, and the future of it looks bright. “We are very close and I think this little push from the auction will get us going,” said Westman. The tournament facility has been in the works for a few years. It is approximately 4,800 square feet and features a dining room that seats in the area of 200 people, as well as a full commercial kitchen, office and storage space. The design features plenty of natural light and views down the first fairway. “It’s a tournament facility, but it is more than that, it is a centre that can be used for weddings, anniversaries and seminars,” said Westman. The facility does not replace the clubhouse, but it is sort of the first phase of improvements to the golf course. Westman says the course would be able to use the completed tournament facility as an interim clubhouse when time comes to replace the existing facility. The tournament facility is expected to cost over $400,000 to complete. “Hopefully in six weeks we’ll see some action,” he said.
