OPINION

Lightning bug brings bush buggy Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Fire Department has one more tool at its disposal for fighting fires. ATCO Electric recently donated one of its former fleet vehicles to the Drumheller Fire Department. The 2007 three-quarter-ton Dodge has been outfitted as a bush buggy for the department.

Fire Chef Bill Bachynski explains the vehicle is optimal for fighting bush and grass fires because it is relatively small and mobile, and has four wheel drive to navigate tricky terrain. ATCO Electric made the donation of the truck and the Drumheller Fire Association outfitted the vehicle, not drawing any capital from the Town of Drumheller.

It has a “skid” which includes a water tank with a pump and hose reel, and firefighters can spray directly from the truck. They are also able to refill portable backpack sprayers which are often used to fight fires on the ground. This week the department took delivery of the vehicle from Louis the Lightning Bug.

The Last Chance Saloon has always been a little bit out there, but now it may have crossed to the other side. Last Saturday it tried out its new Paranormal Dinner Theatre, just a lively meal and a chance to visit with the other side, hosted by Lothar the Magician. JoAnne Akerboom catches a glimpse of the spirit world with Lothar.

Thomas Schow “It’s a tough one. I’d say just keep it a fine because it only costs money, not demerits.”

Al Gerdung “There should be some sort of consequences such as ticketing or demerits (dangerous texting, etc. when driving.”

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

“One Night for NICU

HAPPENINGS Old Grouch’s 24-Hour Jam set for June

is a local fundraiser in conjunction with the Sport Chek Mother’s Day Run. Our event raises money for the Calgary Health Trust Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

We experienced ďŹ rsthand how important the neonatal intensive care units (NICU) are. On May 11, 2013 our twin boys, Marek and Cohen, were born extremely premature. They weighed 1 pound 8 ounces at birth. Sadly our oldest, Marek, passed away. We spent 131 days in the NICU with Cohen before we were able to take him home. We are forever grateful to the Foothills Medical Centre for the time we had with Marek and for giving us our baby Cohen. After being through this experience, we have heard many stories of local Alberta Families that have needed neonatal intensive care units. You never know when a family close to your heart will need the NICU. Lonnie and Korilee Farmer

Church members and friends pitched in with the construction, as did members from Alberta’s SAGE (Seniors in Action for God with Excellence) group. The SAGE group also provided financial assistance to the church. Funding for the project was made possible by an anonymous major donor, church operating reserves, the Alberta Conference of SDA Churches, and numerous donations by friends and members of the church. A grant provided by the Government of Canada’s Enabling Accessibility Fund allowed the church to install the ramp and elevator. The church plans further work on both landscaping and the church interior.

Familiar faces back in The Diary of Anne Frank Submitted | inSide Drumheller

The Diary of Anne Frank opened on the Rosebud Theatre Opera House stage on March 28, and audiences can expect to see some familiar faces in familiar roles. Audiences will remember Cassia Schramm, David Snider, and Jeany Van Meltebeke from a number of previous shows in Rosebud. “Cassia Schramm rew13c14h

turns to our stage as Anne Frank, after having played Anne in our wildly successful production of Anne of Green Gables the summer of 2012,” says Director, Paul Muir. “There are a lot of similarities between the two Anne’s. Both Anne Shirley and Anne Frank embody a zeal for life that is both contagious and unstoppable. While Anne Frank’s situation is much more severe, they both have a core belief in the fundamental goodness of the human spirit.” While Schramm plays the strong-willed young girl, Snider, who was also in Anne of Green Gables as Matthew Cuthbert, plays a patriarchal figure again as Otto Frank, Anne’s father, reflecting a very similar relationship. Artistic Director Morris Ertman describes the cast. “It’s no coincidence that David Snider and Cassia Schramm were cast as Otto Frank and Anne Frank respectively. The relationship they

shared on stage in Anne of Green Gables was transparent and beautiful. Cassia embodies the spirited intelligence of a young woman whose light inspires. That was true of Anne of Green Gables, and it is true of The Diary of Anne Frank.” Snider’s character may also remind audiences of Tevye from 2008’s Fiddler on the Roof. Calm and protective over his daughters, he quietly guides them to make their own life choices, as he does Anne. By his side is his real-life wife, Jeany van Meltebeke,

who plays Edith Frank, in The Diary of Anne Frank. When asked if being a couple in real life helps relate to his character onstage, Snider commented, “I think of two things that I experience in working with Jeany playing husband and wife: First, we connect immediately to the affection and support as a couple whose priority is mostly parenting. We have two pre-teen sons, so we understand the family dynamics pretty well. Second, playing Otto and Edith is enriching because we get to learn how the Franks

relate differently than we do as husband and wife, especially in their extreme circumstances. Overall, it is an honour to share the experience of telling this profound story.” “I’ve really been blessed with this cast. Each and every one of them brings something personal to their roles that have made their interpretation of their characters incredibly unique,” echoes director Paul Muir. “I loved the idea of David and Jeany working together as Otto and Edith Frank, and it made so much sense that one of their offspring was someone like Cassia’s interpretation of Anne. Cassia brings a real fire and passion to Anne, along with a depth that is beyond her years. One of the most striking things about the character of Anne Frank is that she says things that

seem far beyond her experience. She taps into a universal truth that we all recognize and understand.” The Diary of Anne Frank plays March 28 to May 17, Wednesdays through Saturdays at the Rosebud Theatre Opera House and tickets are selling quickly. SPORTS Former Dragon watches team’s run from afar

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Dragons are storming through the post season, and it is bringing hockey fans back to the arena and attracting many more outside of the valley. The Dragons are in a dogfight with the Brooks Bandits as of press time, and for games three and four, the attendance at the Drumheller Memorial Arena has topped 1,700. The team has been making headlines in national media and online. Kevin Bui was a standout for the Drumheller Dragons, and when he graduated from the team was the MVP from 20062008 and the top scorer in the 2006-2007 season. Today he is working on business development for a tech company in New York City. “I have been following the Dragons and I am happy to see the success of the program. I really hope they can re-

ally bring it home, as it would mean a lot to the community of Drumheller, “ Bui tells inSide Drumheller. While thousands of miles, and years away from the Dragons, he cherishes the time he spent in Drumheller as a Dragon. “I will always look back at the chance the Dragons gave me to further my career in hockey and also remembering all the amazing people I met. Those amazing people were my teammates who I am still friends with today, as well as the people in the Dragons organization, billets, and of course all the great people in the Drumheller community,” he said, adding there is one person that stands out above all. “Arlene Turner will always be a big part of my life as she was my billet mother, she taught me a lot when I was in Drumheller, and without her my time in Drumheller wouldn’t have been as memorable as it was.”

Bui went on to Quinnipiac University in Connecticut and was a member of the Division 1 NCAA Bobcats. While it took him a few yeas to get on skates and contribute to the team, his late game heroics took the Bobcats to the Frozen Four last season. He scored in double overtime to eliminate Cornell, sending the team to the semifinals of the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament. The Bobcats lost in the championship game of the Frozen Four national championship to Yale. “It’s always tough losing when you come so close. Especially in a tourna-

He says he has learned many lessons from hockey that he has applied to life. “Some life lessons that I got from hockey are learning how to deal with adversity and applying it. Sometimes things might not go well in life, but all you can do is pick yourself up and keep going,’ he said. “Please wish the boys good luck on their run towards a championship for me. I hope to be back in Drumheller one day to watch a game.”
