So James and his team, “James’ Gang”, are joining the thousands who will walk 5 km to find a cure. To help with the team’s fundraising, he and his family are organizing a BBQ on Wednesday, April 21 from 11:30 a.m. at Trican Base in Drumheller. Food on offer will be hamburgers and macaroni salad and there will also be a silent auction. Many items were donated by businesses in the area. James’ Gang also has a facebook page, called “James’ Gang..Walk for Diabetes.. Find a Cure”, which his mom maintains. Local groups team up to issue Earth Day Clean-up Challenge Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

“Who do you think picks up after you when you throw your garbage out of your car or as you are walking down the road?” This is the question Trish Parker, chair of Communities in Bloom (CIB) asks herself when she sees the garbage that lines the streets of Drumheller now the snow has melted. Coffee cups, fast food wrappers, dog excrements, cigarette packets and many more unwanted waste items are revealed that people unlawfully dispose of.

" It is a great event , it is definitely a worthwhile cause, everyone should work towards a cleaner community." Mike Dooley

As well as the Town of Drumheller spending resources every year during spring, many residents and businesses devote their time voluntarily to clean up Drumheller. On Earth Day, every year, The Royal Tyrrell Museum organizes a trail trash challenge and sends some of their staff to clean up around the museum and its neighborhood trails. “Over the last few years we have noticed that it has Riverside Value Drug Mart Mart 2nd Avenue & Centre Street Drumheller

gone better so our effort is definitely making a difference," said Mike Dooley from The Royal Tyrrell Museum. CIB, the Drumheller Institution Inside-Out program, the Inn at Heartwood and Encana also organize an Earth Day cleanup, inviting residents and businesses to join them. This year, the museum is teaming up with other groups as well as downtown merchants and the Drumheller Dragons for the Earth Day cleanup, taking place on Thursday, April 22. The idea is to challenge all residents and businesses to take part to help make Drumheller a garbage-free town. “It is a great event, it is definitely a worth-while cause, everyone should work towards a cleaner community,” said Dooley. A study by the University of British Columbia looked into the reason why people litter, their research points to several factors that may impact on littering behaviour: • feeling that someone else (a hired litter picker) will pick it up. • the gap between attitudes and behaviours (what people believe and what they do). • number, placement and

appearance of bins at or near the site. • absence of realistic penalties or consistent enforcement. • people thinking the item is not litter (eg. cigarettes, food scraps). • people not being willing to look for a bin. • lack of social pressure to do the right thing. • lack of knowledge of the environmental effects of littering. • amount of litter already present at a particular site. • presence and wording of signs referring to litter. • for some smokers, it has become an “accepted norm” to throw used cigarette butts on the ground. Unless someone cleans up litter, its effects may be seen for years. Last week I gave birth to my first child, and with the beginning of spring I wanted to know if it is safe to take medication for my allergies if I am breast feeding? M.G Generally, the latest versions of allergy medications such as Claritin, Allegra, and Reactine are considered safe in nursing mothers, with a chance of sedation with Reactine. As well, Benadryl is considered compatible.

Q:

Sometimes I find that our local pharmacy can get quite busy. Can I make an appointment with a pharmacist?

A:

While I cannot answer for all pharmacies, most will definitely take appointments. Appointments are usually made when there is overlap (more than one pharmacist on at a time). Currently there are some stores that are taking part in a government sponsored initiative that pays to have a patient’s medications reviewed by a pharmacist. It is called PPMI.

Q:

I find that most often my prescriptions will say take 3 times a day. Do they base that on 24 hours, or average hours they assume we are awake each day?

A:

For most antibiotics, it is based on while the person is awake. Therefore, the first dose should be taken upon rising, the last dose at bedtime, and then one dose approximately in the middle. Rarely, the timing is more critical, but in those cases the pharmacist should let you know.

Darcy Nundahl, Community Enforcement supervisor for Drumheller, explained to inSide Drumheller, “littering is covered under the Alberta Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act…but it is pretty tough to enforce unless you actually catch people doing it.” In fact, his figures show that in 2009 there were only 14 reported incidents to Community Enforcement and warnings issued. Nundahl encourages people to report unlawful littering, and explains a complaint can be made online too, by going to www. dinosaurvalley.com/bylawenforcement-licensing.

The Earth Day cleanup challenges everyone to get involved on April 22 and help make Drumheller a garbage free community. In the photo, a common sight at the base of hedges around Drumheller. inSide photo by Pascale Taylor

From there, people can access their “online reporting” system and as long as people are happy to testify, the complaint will be dealt with. Some businesses devote resources to cleaning up other people’s garbage, such as the Drumheller McDonald's restaurant. Brandi Schneider, owner, told inSide Drumheller “We send our staff around the block to pick up garbage as part of our regular routine. We are equalling frustrated with people littering and this is why we provide so many garbage cans on our lot…I know that the perception is a lot of it is our food garbage because we send our people to pick up the trash, but it is all types of garbage, cigarette boxes, etc. If you look at our parking lot, people will be right beside a garbage can and yet they will throw their garbage out of their vehicle. I want a clean Drumheller too.” Tammi Nygaard, Drumheller Landfill operations manager, also feels strongly about littering and has tried to reduce the garbage on the highway which may come from vehicles’ unsecured loads going the landfill. “A lot of people don’t secure their load when coming to the landfill,” she explains, “we try to be educational first and we implemented a surcharge for unsecured loads back in 2004.” Alberta Transportation runs two programs to help with highway cleanup, the annual highway cleanup and the adopt-a-highway programs. With the first program, any non-profit group can register their interest and be paid up to $100 per kilo-

metre of highway cleaned, usually the first or second Saturday of May. The other program is on a voluntary basis. Moh Ashraf, highway operations engineer for Alberta Transportation explained to inSide Drumheller, “the highway cleanup program originally was an educational program, so when people pick up the garbage, they realize,"if I am going to throw it out of the car window next time, somebody has to come and pick it up’, it is the tax payers money that is involved, we encourage kids from nine to get involved, so they can become educated when they grow up not to do this.” Cleaning up litter has a cost. Every year, the efforts of volunteers who clean up Drumheller and the area are greatly appreciated. However, if they did not have to clean up after others, that energy could be redirected to other projects to benefit the community. All it takes is for people to put their trash in the right place. If residents feel there is a shortage of trash cans in a particular area, the Town of Drumheller can be contacted to assess the area and a new trash can will be put in if they find there is a need.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 No one can ever achieve perfect balance, Aries, so don't put so much effort toward this goal. There's no need to be perfect; you're fine just the way you are.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Some bit of information is escaping you, Sagittarius. Keep thinking and it will come back. Leo is a thorn in your side this week. But the problem will soon blow over.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Everyone is waiting for you to get down to business, Taurus. The time is right to get to work and make everyone proud. But don't get too far ahead of the pack.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Follow the routine and stick to the basics this week, Capricorn. Now is not the time to try something new. Go with what works. Aquarius offers good advice.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 You're texting, calling, and emailing people all day long. No one can claim that you aren't the center of information. But you may be spending too much time gossiping instead of working.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 A great idea comes out of the blue and provides inspiration for future projects, Aquarius. Embrace it and enjoy the ride. Cancer means well but could be meddlesome.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Agree to disagree with someone at your office. Sometimes an argument is not worth the effort, and proving a point does not lead to success. Take some time to relax on Tuesday. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Try to see the bright side of your employment situation, Leo. No job is perfect, including your own. But any job can have bright spots. Get a new perspective.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 The answer to a problem may seem obvious, Libra. But you may want to dig a little deeper. Chances are you are missing something if the answer is too easy. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 With so many tempting options, it can be extremely hard to make a decision, Scorpio. Don't fall for just glitter and glamour, however. Look for something of substance.

Are you ready to streak for MS Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Don’t be surprised if you see some streaking in support of the Enerflex MS Walk coming up on Sunday, May 2. This year, the Drumheller event is asking residents to streak for MS. This streaking may be a little different than Frank the Tank’s legendary action. Rather, for a $5 donation, a person can show their support for the MS Walk by streaking their hair. For $5 anyone can purchase a red hair clip and wear it to show support for the work the MS Society of Canada does.

For a small donation anyone can show their support for MS by streaking… their hair.

Dave Watson, MS Walk coordinator for Drumheller, says this the first time they have tried out the endeavour. On Tuesday, April 20, they will be set up at Wal-mart in Drumheller streaking hair for a donation. They will also be streaking at the Volunteer Fair on Saturday, April 24, and are planning a streaking event at DCHS. This year’s MS Walk is coming together, although so far it appears registrations are a little slow. Watson says they are lagging behind last year's pace by about 15 entries. He says it is easy to register, simply go to www.mswalks. ca and follow the links to the Drumheller event. Those who are not able to register online can call 1-800-268-7582. Watson is also looking for support from volunteers and entertainers. For more information or to volunteer, contact Watson at 403-823-6920 or 403-820-4100.

WEEKLY SPECIALS by C. Aiello

One morning last week I thought I’d take the old dad out for breakfast, or perhaps I should say, I took him out to breakfast, his treat. It seemed only fair, as he has, in the last month or so, offered to buy me breakfast, only to have me beg off. This is a man who can look a gift horse in the mouth. “What’s the big deal today. Why are you taking me out today?” “Don’t worry Pop, you’re not dying, and it’s not out of love.” “You’re buying.” “There feel better?” After a satisfying breakfast at Whif ’s Flapjack House (mutually agreed upon) and him picking up the tab, Pop wanted to send flowers to his Granddaughter in Brooks for Easter. He didn’t have the address, so we made a stop at home. I should have known better than to ask where he wanted to get the flowers, but breakfast left me a little dull witted. At the IGA Pop picked out a nice bouquet, which he said didn’t really matter because they only take a dollar figure and send that, where the florist at the other end makes up a corresponding bouquet. Pop told the florist something in the 40 dollar range. Paying for it was a bit of a hassle, going from the floral department, where Pop insisted he could pay for it over at the Deli till, where the new cashier had trouble with the machine. What should have been a five minute deal became a twenty minute ordeal, with me breaking out my credit card just to speed things along. $57.50. Oh to have escaped for so little. As I tried to head Pop toward the doors, he decided that we should look for some things that might be on sale. Tomatoes, a couple of cans of tomato sauce, cookies, and several other items. Just before we get to the checkout Pop remembers he wants to send flowers to an old and dear friend. Back down to the florist. “This one?”, “No”, “This one?” “Yeah, that’s not bad”, “Wait, what about this one?” “You like that one Pop?” “Good, lets ..”, “No, now wait, I didn’t say that.” “No you didn’t, I’m sorry.” “Pop, please pick one, we’ve been here 45 minutes.” “Here Pop, this one is very pretty.” “Yeah, that one looks good.” “Sir, we’ll take this one.” Phew! Finally to the check out, ka-ching $67.40, and that’s with the discount for having purchased a certain amount. Out comes the credit card, again. Of the $67.40, $43.00 of it is for flowers. I have spent over $100.00 to send flowers to people whom I would not normally send flowers, and on the accompanying cards of which Pop’s name would be the only one. For all those who thought I was being hard on the the “Old Man”, let’s check the figures: Breakfast for me $9.95, flowers for Pop - $100.50. $100.50 - $9.95 = $90.55 out of my pocket to take him out for breakfast on his dime. Next time I’ll buy breakfast.

This year is the 25th Anniversary of the East Coulee Spring Festival. That is quite an accomplishment for a small community, and those who organize and work at it are to be congratulated, they continually, consistently provide a full day of musical entertainment. For those of you who are new to the valley, this is an event not to be missed. It is a harbinger of Spring, and all kinds of music can be found being played by locals and bands from all over. There’s country, folk, blue grass, alternative and rock. There’s food, chili, beef on a bun, hot dogs, hamburgers, and plenty of liquid refreshments to wash it all down. There is a convivial, festive atmosphere that just makes for a real good day. That’s tomorrow from noon to midnight East Coulee School Museum and East Coulee Community Hall. 14m

WPCA Dodge Pro Tour Tarp Auction for Dino Derby Rebounds

Friday, April 9, 2010 -11

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Dinosaur Derby Tarp Auction appears to be on the rebound, garnering almost $10,000 more in sponsorship over last season’s event. The Annual Tarp Auction was followed online on Tuesday, April 6 at the Stampede Barn. WPCA Dodge Pro Tour drivers including Chad Harden, Cliff Cunningham, Obrey Motowylo and Reg Johnstone were in attendance to see the tarps auctioned. In the end the auction raised $118,000, over last year’s $108,250. Mike Hansen of the Drumheller Stampede and Ag Society was encouraged by the results. “I think with the economy the way it is down here and all the businesses that have moved on, I think we did pretty good,” said Hansen. While the results are still being finalized, local tarp purchasers included Home~Town Realty which purchased Tim Haroldson’s tarp for $2,000, Bert Dekeyser and Alex MacKinnon purchased Barry Hodgson’s tarp for $2,000, the Drumheller Ag Society purchased John Walter’s tarp for $2,500, and H&H Huxted purchased Darcy Flad’s and Mike Vigen’s tarps for $2,500 and $6,000 respectively. The Banditos were back. The team made up of Tyler and Val James, Terry and Merridy Martin, Joe and Cheryl Bertamini, Bob and Vicki Davidson, Stan

and Tracy Waddell, Mike and Lori Stefanishion, Bill Herman and Dave Silberstein, purchased Cody Risdale’s tarp for $2,500. There may be more locally purchased tarps announced in the near future, as it appears there were some issues with bidding with the online auction system. The high bid was $6,250 for Rae Croteau Junior’s tarp, and the average bid was $3,277. Hand Hills driver Colt Cosgrave’s tarp went for $5,250 from EBA Engineering Consulting. While the attendance appeared to be on par with last year’s event, Hansen still would have liked to see more in atten-

dance. “I was hoping for the better side of 200, so it’s a little disappointing,” he said. He says the best way to engage the local crowd to come is, to go back to the early days of the Dinosaur Derby. Before the WPCA went to the one auction for seven of the events, there was individual auctions trackside for each event. There was also better local support. He would like to see the WPCA revert to that system. “It was a proven thing, there were lots of people there and everyone had a good time,” said Hansen. The Dino Derby will run this year on Father’s Day weekend in June.

Drumheller Bit’s and Pieces shop front honours the current Girl Guide of Canada cookie sale campaign with a cute display that Guide Leader and shop owner, Tara Semchuk, put together. This tradition started in 1927 with the first cookies sold in Regina, Saskatchewan and this year, to celebrate the Girl Guide of Canada’s 100th anniversary, a special cookie box is introduced, containing the classic chocolate and vanilla cookies at 0 g trans fat per serving. In case people miss the girls during their rounds, cookies can be picked up at Bit’s and Pieces. inSide photo by Pascale Taylor

With these great prospects, there will be some great hockey on the ice. “The prospects are outstanding,” said Price. “We have a small camp in terms of numbers and a lot of skill. There is also a lot of versatility. There is depth at every position, there is some size, and

some incredible speed. It’s going to be one of our best camps on record.” Price says they will have in the area of 100 skaters out for the camp, making up 5-6 teams. Registration begins at noon on Friday, and it will be followed by a player/parent meeting. Each team will have a practice session starting at 2:30 p.m. Squad games will begin on Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and continues in the late afternoon into the evening. There will also be a goalie clinic during the day. Play will continue on Sunday with games as well as exit interviews. Rather than an inter-squad game to end the camp, Price says they will be running the weekend in a round robin

format so every player will get equal ice time. For a spring camp, the numbers are relatively small, allowing coaches to carefully evaluate the players. While there are some talented players at the camp, Price says there are

no guarantees. “We have to evaluate the players first, we have to look at our current depth chart. Typically at spring camp you get one or two prospects to create that cycle of young players for the following year,” said Price.
