Paving on 2nd Street/Highway 9 in downtown Drumheller has disrupted traffic this week, especially crossing the bridge. People report the usual quick trip took as much as 45 minutes to an hour, with traffic snaking from downtown back past the lights at Freson Bros. at one point.

Wendy & Gary Salanski Keenan & Reese Parsons Jaffary, British Columbia

Who are you? (Top row, l-r) Wendy and Gary Salanski. (Bottom row, l-r) Keenan and Reese Parsons. Careers: Gary is retired, and Wendy works at the Koocanusa Marina. Where are you from? Jaffary, British Columbia. It’s near Crambrook and Fernie, and about a five hour drive away. What brings you to Drumheller? We came to show our grandkids, Keenan and Reese, the Royal Tyrrell Museum now that they’re old enough to explore. How many times have you visited Drumheller? About three or four times. We used to bring our other grandchildren out here on vacation before they got too old. What was on your tour list? Reptile World, the splash park, the World’s Largest Dinosaur, and of course, the Tyrrell Museum. Are you going to visit anywhere else after Drumheller? No, we’re actually heading back home soon.

Throughout summertime, drumhellertourism.com will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

How about them gas prices? It’s 20 cents cheaper here! If we visited Jaffary, what would you recommend we see? Well, there’s a lot to see and do in the area. Fort Steele and the Koocanusa Marina, in Jaffary, but go visit the ski hill in Fernie. There’s stuff like ziplining and mountain biking, then there’s always golfing and sight-seeing at the surrounding lakes.

Two years for Two Wheel View in Drumheller Lauren Main | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller and district is rounded up local kids for yet another bicycle trip from our Badlands to Banff. Two Wheel View was implemented in Drumheller last year to promote health and wellness, goal making, leadership, and environmental stewardship in local youth. Through a bicycle expedition and educational pit-stops along the way, Two Wheel View is able to enrich local youth for a second year. Constable Craig Nelson with the Drumheller RCMP is a chaperon for his second year as the group bikes 320 kilometers to Banff. “I expect the kids to come back with an experience unlike any other. The sense of accomplishment is indescribable. This trip is something every kid should do, since it forces them out of their comfort zone and makes them overcome large challenges,

boosting their self-esteem,” Nelson explains. The trip is nine days long and will be lead by experienced trip organizers, but other than that, the bikes are unsupported- there are no trucks following behind the group. Kerry Maguire has been with Two Wheel View for three years, and was a part of the long

distance trip last year. “There are points where you can be intimidated by the kilometers, but since this is a leadership trip, there’s a great support system in place for us and the kids. In the mornings when we wake up, we ask how everyone is feeling on a scale of 1-10, and we let kids vent if anyone is overwhelmed,” Magu-

ire says. “The best part of this trip is showing youth that when you interact with the environment, it’s more personal. On this trip, you get to see, feel and experience more than you ever could inside a car.” The group will average fifty kilometers a day in order to reach their ultimate destination of Banff.

Gearing up for Tough Mudder

Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The September 6 and 7 Tough Mudder event is gearing up with the arrival of the event construction staff and plans for a downtown festival. Bob Cromwell, Event Coordinator with the event hosts, the Drumheller Festival Society, said the course’s early construction crew is getting familiarized with the terrain and the initial course outline. “They’re sort of mapping and charting it out, finding what the biggest obstacles are, in and amongst that maze down there,” said Cromwell. The course, designed by British Special Forces, starts on the Stampede Grounds and

works it way into the valley. The Tough Mudder course holds more than twenty challenging obstacles over its 16 - 20 kilometre long stretch. Cromwell said that positive comments have been building about the course and where it’s laid out, noting it may be the ultimate Tough Mudder course yet. “The Tough Mudder office, head office in Brooklyn, New York, seems to be getting more and more ecstatic about this event,” he notes of the Drumheller Tough Mudder. He said that Tough Mudder has indicated attendance numbers

are on track for the endurance obstacle course. The highest number of participants estimated for the event is around 8,000 people. Annette Nielsen, co-owner of CCE Productions, is aiming to entertain those Mudder attendees in Drumheller’s downtown. CCE is spearheading the assembly of a downtown festival to run in conjunction with Tough Mudder. Nielsen said the festival is pending liquor licensing approval and the Town’s acceptance of the permit application. “We plan on having

a festival downtown, with food trucks, merchants, a beer garden, and live bands.” The plan-to-date would have the festival start late Friday afternoon, September 5, and then again on Saturday afternoon. Nielsen said CCE already has bands and merchants confirmed

Editor, inSide Drumheller Dear Editor: Wednesday, July 13 kindness of strangers. Being 7 months pregnant at this time of year is really no picnic. If the heat isn’t trying to do you in, the changes in your body sure are.

My walk to the post office was a rather slow one this morning, as I had some ligaments pulling rather painfully. On the way home, 2 strangers stopped to see if I was ok - a woman in a van and a man in a truck. To these kind strangers: thank you for taking the time to turn around a moment to see if I was in need of help. I truly appreciate it! No kindness should ever go un-noticed. Pam Sherwin Rosedale

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Sudoku

Term: Casual year-round (2–3 days per week)

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Salary: starts at $10.50 per hour Deadline for application: Monday, August 18, 2014 Forward your resume with cover letter indicating which position or positions you would like to be considered for, to: Kathy Little Support Services Manager Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce Fax: (403) 823-4469 Email: k. little@drumhellerchamber.com

Drumheller’s ready for Tough Mudder…are YOU?

are you?

Peou Ros

With 8000 people visiting our community the biggest question is:

Can we handle it? The answer is YES with YOUR help and support! Do you own a business that is hosting a special event that weekend? Do you manage a restaurant and can you take reservations or host special meals? Do you have something unique to offer the Mudders at your retail space?

To provide information about what your business or group has to offer this unique tourism demographic, please contact Chris Curtis at Travel Drumheller today @ 403-820-0662 or chris.curtis@traveldrumheller.com. You can also find out more about what activities and events are already taking place during the Tough Mudder weekend at www.traveldrumheller.com k33ch

Birthdate: July 6, 1958. Career: General work at the Vietnamese Noodle House. How long have you been working at the Noodle House? Five years. So, what do you enjoy most about your job? I like it all, but working with family is very nice. Have you lived in Drumheller all your life? No, I’ve lived in a lot of places. I grew up in Cambodia, and when I left to Canada, I first went to Saskatoon, then to Calgary, and after that, Windsor, Ontario. Finally, I moved to Drumheller. How long have you been living in Drumheller? Since 2009. What do you like the most about this area? I like how quiet it is,

and that I know my neighbours. Do you have any favourite T.V. shows? No, but I like to watch sports.

What kind of sports? Hockey. I cheer for both the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers. In Saskatoon, there wasn’t any hockey teams, so when I came to Alberta, I couldn’t decide which

one I liked better. If you won a million dollars, what would you do with it? Travel. I would go everywhereAsia, Europe, Australia. We usually try to travel every year, and I really want to visit France. What’s one of the coolest places you’ve visited? California. I’ve been there 3 or 4 times now because my sisters live there. Do you have three words to describe yourself? Friendly, compassionate, and good-humoured. If you had a super power, what would it be? I would want to be able to bring people together, for them to love and care for each other and act with decency. Any words of wisdom? Keep smiling.

To nominate the next Who are you? Please give us a call at 403-823-2580, fax at 403-823-3864 or email news@insidedrumheller.com
