On Tuesday evening, the Big Bike rolled through Drumheller, crewed by two local teams. First, a team of RBC, CIBC, and ATB Financial employees banded together to pilot the bike through town. Then, Freson Bros. staff and their families hopped on for a cruise of their own (inset). The Big Bike raises money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The two Drumheller teams raised over $4,000 and counting as of Tuesday evening.

OPINION

inSide STREETERS Municipal election season is starting, with Drumheller’s incumbents announcing their plans. inSide Drumheller asks: “What do you want to see done in Drumheller?”

Chelsey Hopkins “Getting the roads fixed and focusing on bringing more tourists and more locally owned businesses.”

Justin Aspell “Road maintenance and when they choose to do it.”

Flood Task Force chair meets with Town Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller has met officially with the Southern Alberta Flood Recovery Task Force to discuss the town’s unique situation. Andre Corbould, chair of the Task Force, visited Drumheller personally to learn more about the issues faced by the town under the province’s proposal and to work with the town to resolve them. inSide Drumheller spoke with Corbould to learn more. “We’re putting together new provincial policies with respect to flood hazard areas. One of those policies is we’re trying to reinforce and protect the integrity of the floodway, which means we want to prevent as much development as possible within floodways,” said Corbould. “Places like Drumheller are unique circumstances and in our policy, announced by Minister (Doug) Griffiths three weeks ago, he said in any policy issues there are unique circumstances and issues and we will address those on a case by case basis.” Town Council and Ad-

ministration have been lobbying to allow development in floodways in Drumheller, feeling any ban would severely limit the growth of the town. Corbould recognizes Drumheller’s mitigation efforts. “Drumheller has developed in the floodway, but protected those developments and mitigated potential risks. We recognize that. I was in Drumheller recently and I used to be part of Transportation, so I’m familiar with some of the work they have done. We want to get the maps out, talk about it, and figure out what the best way ahead is,” said Corbould. The flood hazard maps published by the province place much of Drumheller within the floodway, the area that would naturally flood in a 1-in-100 year event. However, most of what is considered to be in the floodway did not flood either this year or in 2005. Corbould explained redoing the maps is not on the table. “We’re not changing the flood hazard maps. It’s important to understand the flood hazard maps are based on some

really good science and international standards. Flood hazard maps are not meant to take into account mitigation. Even though you create a berm, that doesn’t change the flood hazard map...it changes what you are approved to put in the floodway,” said Corbould. “We constantly change the maps to account for environmental conditions, but it’s important from a scientific perspective that you stay true to those maps, which are based on the natural flow of the water and some good science.” The goal is to work

with the Town of Drumheller to determine a way forward that is mutually acceptable. “My intent is to work with the Town of Drumheller. We’re not going to so much do an assessment as we are going to work as a team to confirm what mitigation has

been done and where we, collectively, think its safe to develop,” said Corbould. “We’re going to put some of the experts together and make sure we are very clear on what the Town wants from a development perspective and how we can help.”

Drumheller woman dead following vehicle rollover Michael James | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller woman is dead and a Hanna woman was airlifted to Calgary with life threatening injuries following a single motor vehicle rollover on Highway 544 east of Patricia. At roughly 3:38 a.m. on Tuesday, August 13, Brooks RCMP and the Patricia Fire Department were dispatched to the rollover. Two occupants of the vehicle were found to have been ejected during the rollover. Initial investigation indicates the vehicle failed to negotiate a bend along the highway, resulting in the rollover. Brooks RCMP continue to investigate and are not ruling out alcohol as a factor in the rollover. No charges have been laid at this time. A 19-year-old female from Drumheller was pronounced dead at the scene and a 20-year-old female from Hanna was airlifted to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary with life threatening injuries. The driver of the vehicle is unknown at this time. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of the next of kin.

Angels Corner project gaining momentum Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

An Angels Corner in Drumheller is becoming a reality thanks to contributions from local supporters. The Big Country Anti Violence Association (BCAVA) embarked on the project this year. An Angels Corner is a place of reflection to bring education and awareness of those who face violence. It is positive space to show there is hope and possibilities for change. “The goal is to create a tranquil site which symbolizes a place of

safety and reflection, where people can think of themselves or loved ones,” said BCAVA president Cindy Stelmaschuk. They have selected a site on the south-west side of Gordon Taylor Bridge and envision a low maintenance green space with local artwork placards and flags. “It will be a place where people can go and sit by the river on a nice bench, a place to recognize that in our community we are supporting people who are affected by domestic violence,” said Stelmaschuk.

Employees from RBC in Drumheller donated $100 from their casual jean fund to BCAVA’s Angels Corner Initiative. At the presentation are (back; l-r) Nathan Fleming, Eileen Herron, Ashleigh Patrosh, Linda Dawson and Karlie Jones of RBC, and (front; l-r) branch manager Elaine Piwin presenting the donation to Cindy Stelmaschuk.

Cindy Stelmaschuk, left, president of BCAVA is grateful for the support of Home-Town Realty for all of its endeavours, including this donation, presented by Phil McCluskey, to go towards its Angels Corner initiative.

She said Nunavut established an Angels Street and St. John’s Newfoundland has a Angels Corner. To make this a reality, they have been busy working on fundraising. Stemlaschuk says the initial project is expected to cost in the range of $8,000 to $10,000. Home-Town Realty, who regularly supports BCAVA with its Red Rose Campaign and other initiatives, have stepped up, as has the staff of the RBC in Drumheller who donated their Friday jeans fund.

inSide photos by Patrick Kolafa

Stelmaschuk said they received a great donation from TAQA North, a resource company with an office in Carbon. “We were blown away when we were contacted by TAQA North saying ‘we have this money from our Christmas party, and we are going to try and get our head office to match it,’” said Stelmaschuk. In all, the company donated $1,250. BCAVA has lined up Kneehill Creek Trees as the landscaper and are awaiting final approval from Alberta Transportation. They hope to begin this summer.

What brings you to Drumheller? We visited Vancouver and Calgary. From there, we came here. It was on our way back home. What do you like most about Drumheller so far? I was very surprised about the environment, it’s so different from when you are driving here and everything is so flat. Then, you come down into this! Are you a big dinosaur fan? I’m not so much, but my husband really is. If someone from Drumheller were to visit Montreal, what should they see? Oh boy! We have the Olympic Stadium, which is neat, because you can see the entire city from the top of the tower on the stadium. Would you come back to Drumheller? I think so if we came to Alberta again.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

by Michael James

I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. It’s hard to believe there is less than a month until the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon (September 8). I’ve been training since the spring and I feel like I’ve come a pretty long way. I thought it was a good time to take a look at where I’m at as far as my training goes and give a little update. When I first started running it was a stretch for me to run without needing to walk after several kilometres. Over time, there has definitely been an improvement. My legs feel stronger and my cardio has really improved. My longest run (without stopping) has been about 15 kilometres. I’m aiming to surpass that within the next couple weeks. As for my pace, I’m not shooting for a blistering time. The 15 kilometre run I did, took

between 10 am and 2 pm at the Badlands Choppers Showroom

me about 1 hour and 35 minutes, which means a 21 kilometre half marathon should take roughly 2 hours and 10 minutes. Probably the biggest change has been my attitude towards running in general. When I first started, it felt like a chore. As I ran more, I began to want to run and even missed it when I couldn’t. Since I started running I have lost a bit of weight, about 15 pounds. Most of that I lost in the first month or so, but what seems to have really changed, is I feel better overall. Taking up running has been a pretty big change in my life, but the biggest has to be cutting back on drinking pop and generally trying to eat healthier. I’m feeling pretty good heading into the final several weeks before the race.

really fast. As the season comes, our expectations always are to win a championship,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. “It’s going to be a very competitive camp. We have to get our numbers down a little by Sunday night, then we have a week to practice, then a rookie game against Camrose on the 26th, and then we’ll make some more cuts.” The Dragons’ scouting staff has been active since the end of the 2012/2013 season, steadily recruiting players for this year’s team. “Our scouting staff has done a really good job this year. We really zoned in on a couple things we needed this year,” said Curran. “We have more grit. We have big players and smaller ones, who play like gi-

ants. When I look at the team, I feel it’s more my team.” Quite a few veterans from last year will be returning, including Stephen Doane, Ryan Suchorab, Tyler Poscus, Joey Raats, Colton Vanucci, Christopher Rauckman, Mitchell Cook, Dakota Zaharichuk, and Tyler Kerner. Last season, the Dragons went 29-26-5, coming in fourth in the AJHL Southern Division. The Dragons swept the Canmore Eagles in the first round of playoffs, but were defeated 4-1 by the Brooks Bandits in the second round. Curran is aiming for a better season. “I felt we had a successful season, but not a great season. In playoff hockey you can never have enough scoring, but you need role players, too. I think we

picked those up. They can score, but they put an emphasis on stopping other teams’ top lines,” said Curran. “We have to still see them (the players) on the ice, but we feel they’re all strong. Our forward lines seem equal, our defense is mobile, we have a good mixture of everything, and I think we’ll be strong in goal. This team is going to be nonstop as far as work ethic, commitment, and playing gritty hockey goes.” The Dragons’ first exhibition game is on Monday, August 26, in Camrose, followed by several more games on the road. The Dragons’ first game in Drumheller is on Monday, September 2 for an exhibition match against the Olds Grizzly’s. The Dragons’ home opener isn’t until September 14.
