It isn’t that unusual to see a horseman riding down the street, after all, this is Alberta. But this one was a little bit peculiar. He has a funny accent and he has ridden more than 14,000 miles to get here. He may also become more familiar than you think, if his television aspirations are successful. Learn more on page 3.

Tough Mudder is approaching quickly. The event date is September 6 and 7. inSide Drumheller asks: “What’s your opinion of Tough Mudder being held in Drumheller?”

Stacey Sloan “My friend Tom will be participating, so I hope he does well, but it’s too extreme for me!”

Kelly Colberg “I think it’s a great event. I just may be too old for it, though.”

Town explores tourism funding model Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Travel Drumheller’s Executive Director Chris Curtis attended the regular meeting of Drumheller Town Council Monday, July 28, to discuss creation of a destination marketing fund. The question is how to collect the money from tourists to support marketing Drumheller and growth of the tourism industry. “Council was provided with one possible option, but a lot more work will have to be done before a decision could be made,” said Drumheller Mayor Terry Yemen. The Banff/Canmore model for destination marketing funding was discussed with Council. Canmore’s destination marketing website

Rebecca Asselin “I actually didn’t know it was coming to Drumheller.”

Justin Scott “It’s a great idea. We need more outdoor events like Tough Mudder in the Valley.”

Dear Editor: Can we talk geology a bit? When I visit your town and see the sedimentary layer cake strata that line this valley, like other visitors, I wonder what happened here in the past to cause this. Did this all form gradually, over millions of years, as both current mainstream geology and the information signs at the Hoodoos east of town state? Or, instead of a whole lot of time, was it a whole lot of water from a regional or even a world-wide catastrophic deluge, as all geologists up until the late eighteenth century believed (many still do). If these sedimentary layers were deposited one layer at a time, over

shows voluntary participation by hotels and lodges, with participants paying a membership fee and funds directed toward marketing and capital projects.

Chris Curtis, Travel Drumheller

“We’re going to look at three different models for sustainable destination tourism management and destination marketing,” said Curtis. Curtis said although

millions of years, we should see the drastic effects of erosion between the layers as thousands of years would have etched grooves, valleys and canyons at various places on each layer. No such features are visible. The layers lie flat on one another, denying the possibility of vast ages separating them. A similar situation following the Mount Saint Helen’s eruption showed sedimentary layers in a deep canyon forming in weeks. And how is it that, although during millions of years, the whole region would have been uplifted or subsided, and experienced geologic activity of different kinds, the layers of sediments are still perfectly parallel and horizontal. It’s really difficult to see vast ages in this valley. It also seems more likely that erosion from massive runoff at the end of such a proposed watery catastrophe, not the present river, as implied

the Canmore funding model was discussed with Council, it’s too early on to say exactly from whom and how the funds would be collected. He said Travel Drumheller is developing a survey to take to industry in the next week or two, and he thinks people in the business already have ideas in mind.

at the Hoodoos, would have scraped off the upper layers to expose this wide valley. Furthermore, undisputed findings of soft dinosaur tissue, not completely decayed, have been cited (Smithsonian Magazine, May 2006, and Science March 25, 2005, and other references). These contained branching blood vessels with an ooze that could still be squeezed out, containing obvious nucleated red blood structures typical of reptiles today. The science of tissue decay simply does not permit a period of some 60 million years since the extinction of dinosaurs. Perhaps geologists before the late 18th century, who considered the Genesis flood a real historical account, had it right. Always enjoy driving through your area.

He speculates that another part of accomplishing this goal is to level the playing field, perhaps by having all businesses in the tourism industry contribute. Brenda Gessleman, co-owner of Rivergrove Campground, said she doesn’t know all the details for new funding proposals, so can’t make a judgement just yet, but she’s satisfied with the present marketing of the town. “I do feel that Drumheller does a great job already.” “At this point, I don’t feel like a levy is necessary.” The Town’s Community Services Director Paul Salvatore said the question is how to collect the funds to aid tourism. “How do we adjust the business licensing

bylaw, which we already have, so that we can support tourism better? So I think that’s the question that’s really being asked.” That is the basis of the Canmore destination marketing funding model. Currently, about 70 per cent of the Canmore lodging industry voluntarily pay into the destination marketing fund. The funding component is one piece of developing tourism identified by the Town a few years ago, another piece is destination development, said Salvatore. “What can we do in terms of infrastructure, in terms of service support, so when you get here, you’re going to have a good experience?” Travel Drumheller will return its findings to council this fall.

HAPPENINGS Passion Play touts successes in challenging season Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Change can often be a difficult thing, however for the Canadian Badlands Passion Play, they took a chance on expansion and they are happy with the results. This year Passion Play added an extra weekend of performances to its schedule. It was a trying season in terms of weather and attendance saw a small drop. Despite this, Executive Director Vance Neudorf is positive about this year’s experience. “It was like nothing I have ever seen,” said Neudorf. This was the first year the Passion Play outright cancelled a performance, last Friday, July 25. They also had to have a one-hour rain delay the previous

We were basically down a show’s worth of people,” he said. “That’s not terrible, we‘ll still be able to be close to making our budget in terms of ticket sales, so that is good.” “For all intents and purposes of launching a third weekend and working through all of these things, it went really well,” he said. Despite one rain out,the Passion Play found many successes this season as they added a third week of productions to its schedule.

Birthdate: January 12, 1967. Occupation: I’m a cashier at Canadian Tire. How long have you been with your job? One year. What do you like the most about your job? The people, really. Right now, I’ve been with the garden center and I enjoy the people and the plants. How long have you been in Drumheller? I live in Carbon, actually. It’ll be nine years in August. What’s the best thing about this community? It’s not loud, but the most enjoyable thing is that we all help each other when something comes up like fundraisers. Any hobbies? Crocheting and scrapbooking. I’ve been scrapbooking for probably twenty years. With the crocheting, I like to make baby outfits, blankets, dish clothes. Favourite foods? Fresh, raw veggies, fruit, basically just snack-like foods.

If you had the ability to learn any skill, what would that be? To learn languages, mostly German or Spanish. My mom’s side is German, so her and my grandmother would always speak it in front of us kids when they didn’t want us to know something, especially Christmas presents. Do you have a dream vacation in mind? A guided African lion safari. Any secret talents? I like to sing, but I’m not very good at it! If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money? Pay off my debts, travel Europe, share it with my family, and then donate the rest to charity. Do you have a catchphrase? “Whatever.” I used to say it as a kid, and I guess it kind of stuck. Any words of wisdom? Don’t give up on your dreams. No matter how crazy, go for it!

patrons in a timely manner of the changes. The Passion Play has been diligent in its monitoring and attention to the weather. “We have our own little weather station,” he says, adding that leading up to and during a performance, he is continually monitoring forecasts, video, and even advance warnings from area residents. “Now I am the weatherman, I take the snapshots and do the forecasting,” he chuckles. He explains that they are still debriefing on the effects of the additional productions, and is surveying all stakeholders, from actors, patrons and the community, on the benefits and or costs of the additional shows. “As a community player, we not only want to be responsible of ourselves but for the business in the community,” said Neudorf. “It was an experiment and there were lots of good things, and now it is just a matter of hearing from people how it worked and how we put it together for next year.” One unforeseen consequence of the additional weekend of shows was the Badlands Summer School. Its program is two weeks and the students are actors in the Passion Play. By the time the Summer School ended, there was still one more weekend of performances. This worked out as most of the extras then came and camped for the remaining weekend. They only lost eight extras. “It became a really neat thing,” said Neudorf.

Throughout summertime, drumhellertourism.com will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

Winnipeg, Manitoba Who are you? (Standing) Kim Elphick, (l-r) Katie Benoit, Aerin and Terence Vandale. How did you guys get here from Winnipeg? We drove 14 hours, stayed in Regina, made a small pit stop in Hanna, then stayed in Red Deer. What brings your family to Drumheller? Kim: My parents live in Red Deer and Aerin loves dinosaurs, so we had to visit. How long are you staying in town? Just a day trip. What is on your tour list today? We’re going to visit the Tyrrell Museum and hopefully the Atlas Coal Mine if Aerin isn’t too tired.

How are the accommodations for visitors? Terence: It’s been good. We ate lunch at one of the restaurants in town and the locals have been really nice so far. Do you guys have a favourite dinosaur? Katie: Stegosaurus! Aerin: I like T-Rexs. How about them gas prices? Kim: Way better than Winnipeg! Back home we’re paying $1.20 a liter. If we visited Winnipeg, what would you suggest we see? Katie: The science gallery! Terence: The Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the new polar bear exhibit, “Journey to Churchill,” at the Assinibione Zoo.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

WORKS

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Drumheller’s downtown merchants are looking to liven things up and invite people to linger downtown a little longer. Chris Curtis of Travel Drumheller said he’ll be helping businesses with plans to schedule entertainers for the remainder of the summer and hold a couple of summer events in the downtown core. Curtis canvassed a number of downtown merchants after some businesses voiced opposition to a downtown pedestrian mall that would have closed off Centre Street between 3rd Avenue and Railway Avenue for July and August. Curtis said the group of Centre Street merchants have decided to put the pedestrian mall idea aside for now and revisit it for next summer. “I talked to the businesses that were very interested in doing this and I think half of them are saying let’s just try something in August, see how this works.” Curtis said he focused on speaking with merchants that were originally interested in the pedestrian mall idea rather than every merchant, because of the change of focus to closing off a street for a day or weekend. “I didn’t talk with all of them because I think at the end of the day we’re not going to try and do a long street closure for August. I think what we’re going to try and do is try a couple of events, and then we’ll try to plan better for next year I guess for Centre Street.” He said a street closure every weekend might be a strain on the small businesses, especially restaurants, in having to move everything they’d need outside and then back in again.

Dream come true...

It is hard to wipe the grin off Ken Briault’s face these days, especially when he is behind the wheel. This summer he realized a dream and purchased this 2002 35th anniversary edition, SS Camaro. This is a special car in more ways than one. His fourth generation Camaro is one of less than 400 Ca-

nadian editions, and as a convertible with a six speed manual it is even more rare. What makes it even more special is the 5.7 litre Corvette inspired LS1 motor. He is the third owner of this car, and he looks like the happiest. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

The Dinosaur Valley Express trolley is changing its service to meet their customer’s demands. Originally, the tour drove throughout the Valley, and dropped visitors off at set destinations, returning a few hours later. The “Hopon, Hop-off ” approach is now altered to provide the trolley riders two fulllength tours, with an extra addition of special event tours. Shelley Rymal and

the Dinosaur Valley Express team got to together and decided to reconstruct the schedule after realizing that the “Hop-On, Hop-Off ” method wasn’t feasible. “People didn’t want to be left at a place for two hours, they wanted to go, see the site, and get back on. The changes are what people were asking for.” photo submitted

“I grew up Catholic. I went to a Catholic high school, and now I’m attending a Christian university.” Darby Andrus

Andrus explains how her faith for God is a major part of her life. “I grew up Catholic. I went to a Catholic high school, and now I’m attending a Christian university.” Andrus states. After graduation, Andrus had the opportunity to play on the women’s basketball team for King’s University College in Edmonton, but never had the chance to share her other passion

of God. When Andrus caught wind of News Release Basketball, a Christian camp based out of the United States, she immediately started to contemplate attending the mission trip. Andrus sent her application in during January, received acceptance in March, and now, after all the stress, fundraising, and waiting, is looking forward to taking action. Starting on July 27, Andrus will be in Portland, United States, for a three day training camp. The team’s first destination in its month long adventure is Wundstorf, Germany, where they will host their first camp for interested youth. From there, her team

will travel to three other locations, including the nation’s capital, Munich.

The mission of News Release Basketball is to spread their message of

Christ through the sport of basketball, and Andrus hopes that achieving the group’s goals will help complete her own personal mission: to enrich herself for further growth of her own gratitude and perspective. “I hope that this experience will shape me to become more selfless,” says Andrus, “I want to make a change. I’m not expecting it to be drastic, but I’m hoping for something big enough to make a difference in their lives.” After four weeks of camps and mission work, Andrus’ group mission will wrap up in Basel, Germany on August 17.
