Kim Beres and Jim Phillips Port Alberni, British Columbia

Who are you? (l-r): Kim Beres and Jim Phillips. Career? Kim: I’m a chef. Jim: I manage oilfield camps up north. Where are you from? Port Alberni, British Columbia. It’s on Vancouver Island. What brings you to Drumheller? We’re actually visiting all of Western Canada. Drumheller is just one of the many stops along the way. Where were you before this? Cold Lake, Alberta. Anything on your tour list? We’ve visited the Homestead Museum already, and then after we have lunch we’re going to the Royal Tyrrell Museum. We just stopped at the World’s

Largest Dinosaur because it caught our eye. How do you like the gas prices? We love them, it’s so much cheaper here. Back home, it can be as high as $1.40 per litre. If we visited Port Alberni, what would you recommend we see? Kim: Well, the place is basically the salmon capital of the world, so you would have to go fishing. There’s a lot to explore though. Jim: You have Parksville on one side of the island, and Long Beach on the other, so there’s plenty of hiking and biking, and then there’s all the water-you want to go boating and swimming.

Drumheller’s first museum open to visitors Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Years before the Royal Tyrrell Museum near Drumheller was created, there was the Badlands Historical Centre. Located near the centre of downtown Drumheller, the Historical Centre has been a keeper of the area’s fossil record since opening as the town’s ďŹ rst museum in July of 1956. It began back then as the “Drumheller Dinosaur and Fossil Museumâ€?, and has undergone a lot of changes since, but still holds an extensive fossil display. Fossils at the museum start on the small scale with teeth of a theropod - dinosaurs from which birds evolved. A local dinosaur expert notes that if we only knew birds from their fossils, we would have been calling them dinosaurs in the 19th century. The centre also houses a huge pachyrhinosaurus skull, and this particular skull is one of the earliest specimens from the area.

Find out who the area artist was that put time capsules in their sculptures, and see what those capsules contain. Admire beautiful sculptures created out of cottonwood pieces by a local artist. Scan the front pages of 1936 editions of The Drumheller Mail to see if, in fact, the more things change, the more they stay the same. There are a number of artifacts from dierent times in Drumheller history to browse through and enjoy, including coal, agriculture and retail. The Badlands Historical Centre is open during the summer season, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Visitors can call the Historical Centre at (403) 8232593.

The Tempest will shipwreck their audience as they perform at the Canadian Badlands Passion Play site this Friday. One of William Shakespeare’s many plays, the Tempest, is set to perform it’s tale of magic, revenge, family bonds, and power struggles the last week of August. Director, Brad G. Graham, enjoys working with Shakespeare’s pieces, and continues to be surprised at how universal the scripts are. “There is an interesting aspect to the story about family and reconciliation; the relationships between parents and children that I was intrigued to explore. I’m continually stunned by these plays, which were written 400 years ago, and are still so relevant,” Graham says. “Here is Prospe-

the forum amphitheater is an outside space. Organizers urge show-goers to prepare themselves, as the performance runs for 75 minutes with no intermission. “Bring your stadium cushion or picnic blanket, and a cool drink,

and enjoy a summer evening!” States Suspension Disbelief ’s media release. Performances for the Tempest are August 21-24 & 27-30 at 7:00 p.m., with weekend shows on the 24 & 30 at 2 p.m.

A family dynamic like that seems so modern, but was being explored by this writer that long ago!”

If your breakfastlunch-dinner plans include anything besides an A&W teen burger, then forget it! A&W’s annual Cruisin’ to End Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Day has returned. For every teen burger sold Thursday, August 21, A&W will donate one dollar to the MS Society of Canada. To top off the fund-raiser, A&W will host an event party from

five p.m. to eight p.m., where various activities will be held. Kim McAdams, manager of Drumheller’s A&W, is excited to see all the events go down. “This is our final day for Cruisin’ the Dub, so we want to raise as much money as we can before eight o’clock tonight. The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

BREAK KIDS CROSSWORD

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more

numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Sudoku Solution

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, sometimes you just need to put a different spin on things to get your way. Instead of being too pushy with things, relax a bit and let others come to you. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, ask for further clarification if there is something you don’t understand. Do not make important decisions until you understand all of the pertinent details. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, now is a good time to plan an outing with family members. It’s been awhile since you’ve made some memories together, and your schedule affords you this opportunity. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 How do you know how others will react to your requests if you never drum up the courage to ask, Cancer? Let your feelings be known this week and take a risk. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, enjoy an upcoming reunion with a friend you haven’t seen in some time. Make the most of this opportunity to catch up and recall old times. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, you have much-needed rest and relaxation coming your way. Let loose this week and enjoy the freedom. Enlist others to join in the fun.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, an opportunity to jump on the career path you always had in mind for yourself is about to present itself. Do everything in your power to make the job yours. Try separating yourself from all external stimulation for a few days. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Something inspires you to give a relationship another chance, Sagittarius. Maybe it was the lyrics to a song or a segment on a television show, but you are moved to action. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Obligations at home could temporarily stall work plans, Capricorn. The adventure will recharge your batteries and may prove inspiring.

HAPPENINGS

Rocio Villagran-Becerra Age: Sixteen. Job: Lifeguard at the Drumheller Aquaplex. What do you enjoy most about being a lifeguard? I like having the responsibility to have to watch over people. How long have you been a lifeguard? Just started this summer. I was already a competitive swimmer, so that came easy. All I had to do was take the courses. Where are you from? Swift Current, originally. We move around lots because of my dad’s job. I’ve lived in Drumheller for one year, but we’re moving again. Where to? Strathmore. What are you going to miss the most about Drumheller? How relaxing it is here. Do you have a favourite movie or television show? Juno. The sound track is amazing, and the script is really funny. What’s on your music playlist right now? Number One Party

Anthem by the Arctic Monkeys. If you had to only eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be? Kraft Dinner. Hobbies? I guess swimming would be my hobby. This is my third year swimming competitively. What got you into competitive swimming? All of my brothers were swimmers, so I guess I just wanted to carry on the family tradition. BAM. You just won a million dollars. What will you do with the money? Just a million? Well, I would pay off my university fees, then I would travel the world. Are you interested in travelling anywhere specific? If I had to narrow it down, it would have to be Vienna, Italy. Any words of wisdom? Don’t sweat the petty things and don’t pet the sweaty things!

Terrapins officially begin new football season Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Terrapins have kicked off their second season, with the number of players joining the team well over last year. Head Coach Corey Miles said the team had 40 players join up, compared to 28 players last in 2013. One of the reasons may be the addition of grade 7 players to the roster. Last season, their first year as a team, the Terrapins included grades five and

six players only. The Terrapins joined Central Alberta’s peewee football league, which allows for players from grades five, six and seven. That means a lot of players from last year’s team were able to return to play for the Terrapins, Miles said. He notes that during their inaugural season, the grade 5 and 6 Terrapins played a lot of big teams with grade 7 players. This season, the coach is hoping for a win, or better yet, six wins.

Dumheller’s peewee football team, the Terrapins, do warm up exercises, led by fitness trainer Heather Jones, prior to Wednesday’s practice. The Terrapins hit the field at Drumheller Valley Secondary School Au-

gust 20 for their first official team practice. The team plays their first home game of the season on Saturday, September 6.

Being a member of the Central Alberta league will give the Terrapins a shot to go to playoffs. Last season, said Miles, the team played mainly exhibition games.

The team’s first home game of their new season at Titans Field is Saturday, September 6, and the coach adds, “We can’t wait for the season to get going.”

Fournier said they graduated eleven of their players this spring. The team has a six game regular season as part of the Rangeland Conference that includes three Medicine Hat teams, Strathmore and Brooks. This year’s Alberta Bowl is slated for November 25 in Lethbridge. When the team is playing and it’s cold outside, such as in November, that means the team’s season is going well. Fournier noted “It’s a privilege to play in the cold.”
