Lehigh residents rebuild in wake of flood Michael James | inSide Drumheller
While the ood that ravaged Southern Alberta has long been over, Albertans continue to recover. In Drumheller, which was spared much of the devastation seen in other communities, one of the neighbourhoods hit hardest was Lehigh. Some residents of the small neighbourhood are hoping the Town will help protect Lehigh and build berms along the river. “What everyone is hoping is maybe the Town will build some dykes to help protect us. There are a few low spots where some dykes and berms could help quite a bit,â€? said long-time resident John Carls. Some residents are frustrated ood mitigation hasn’t happened. “We haven’t had any word from the Town whether or not they’re going to build a berm
out here,â€? said Lehigh resident Tyson St. Jean. “It’s like we’re the forgotten ones.â€? Scott and Penny Head, who moved to Lehigh in October 2012, would like to see a berm as well. “A permanent berm would be wonderful. All the other communities have them, so ours should too. There’s 11 families here and it would sure be nice to know we’re a little safer,â€? said Penny. The Head house was one of, if not the, hardest hit house in Lehigh during the ood. The couple are choosing to rebuild, like most residents of the neighbourhood. “We lost part of our house. There was a large addition on the back, but water got underneath it, eroded the dirt, the addition pulled away from the house, and it had to be demolished,â€? said Penny. “We’re going to start rebuilding next month.â€? They have yet to hear from the province how
much ďŹ nancial aid, if any, they will receive. “We had someone come who took some pictures, and we ďŹ lled in some more forms, but she didn’t really know anything. She gave us a phone number and told us to fax our bills there. They didn’t seem to have any answers for us,â€? said Penny. “Either way, we’ve got to rebuild.â€? Peggy Ginger and her husband Ted, were spared direct ooding, but dealt with seepage into their basement. They’re also waiting to hear from the provincial government, but are committed to ood prooďŹ ng their home. “If we were to raise our house, ďŹ ll in our basement, drill a well, and put in an addition for our furnace and water treatment, we could be virtually ood safe,â€? said Peggy. “We really feel in limbo. Do we put money into our houses? What do you do?â€? For St. Jean, two oods
is more than enough. “We were here in ‘05. My wife and I don’t want to go through this again, so we’re thinking of trying to sell next year. It’s obviously not a 1-in-100 year thing, said St. Jean. “My basement was full to the light bulb, water went four feet into the garage, and my well was full. I had seepage for a week and half after. I’d pump it out and the next
day, there would be two feet of water back in the basement.â€? Like the Gingers, St. Jean hasn’t heard from the province regarding ďŹ nancial help to rebuild. “We waiting. They’ve gotten our application, but that’s about it. We did have the provincial adjuster here, but haven’t heard anything,â€? said St. Jean.

Cenovus Palaeo Playground opens Saturday Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
This Saturday, the Royal Tyrrell Museum and Cenovus will officially unveil the Cenovus Palaeo Playground. The playground has become a popular addition to the Tyrrell for locals and visitors, allowing kids to blow off some steam and have fun. Cenovus came to the table to sponsor some great improvements to the park. “This exciting project
offers enhanced educational opportunities for children and youth. We strive to be innovative in all we do at Cenovus, including the way we support communities where we live and work,” said Leanne Courchesne, Group Lead, Community Investment, Cenovus Energy. “We hope the Cenovus Palaeo Playground will be a fun, interactive attraction for many years to come.” With a generous $100,000 sponsorship, the museum was able

They say the first step is always the hardest. In the case of a group of teens from Drumheller, the first pedal was the hardest. Eight teens enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh program, and one other who is planning to join later, set out on a bike trip from Drumheller to Banff on Thursday, a little after 10 a.m. The teens were excited to get underway on the adventure. “I’m really excited to go on the trip, but I’m a little nervous as well. We have some great leaders, who have really helped us out. It’s going to be an awesome trip. I have a lot of friends with me here, so it’ll be great,” said Liam McDougald, who is working through the Duke of Edinburgh program and participating in the trip. The trip will take the teens over 300 kilometres, through the prairies, into the foothills, concluding in the mountains. As of today (Friday, August 23) the group will be biking from Acme to Airdrie. “We’re going to be aver-

Everything we need, we’ll be carrying on our bikes. We’ll do our provisioning at a couple grocery stores along the way,” said Colin Rioux, with Two Wheel View, who is facilitating the trip. “We take frequent breaks, we eat as much as we can, we teach how to hydrate properly, and make sure to have a good mix of on and off-bike activity.” The trip will go towards fulfilling the requirements of the Duke of Edinburgh program. “The biggest one they’ll be filling is the Adventurous Journey, which will count towards their silver and bronze awards. There’s also going to be skill development and physical activity, which are other crite-

ria,” said Corporal Kevin Charles, an RCMP liaison with the program. “There are half a dozen different areas you have to work on to get the awards, so, depending on what they require, a lot of them are pretty close to their next awards.” Planning for the trip began in April. Over the summer, the teens fundraised to make the trip a reality. The hope is the bike trip will become an annual event. “This is the first year for it. We hope to spread the word to other youth. The day after they get back, they’re in school, so, hopefully the word spreads and other kids want to do it next year,” said Charles. international. “It’s a little different from what we usually do. We’ve taken kids to Argentina and Norway, so we really get them out of their comfort zone. It helps provide global citizenship, leadership, empowerment, and to see the world outside our borders and other cultures. The Drumheller to Banff trip is more local and there are such fantastic landscapes here in Alberta,” said Rioux. They return home on Tuesday, August 27, just in time to go back to school. “This goes into our Duke of Edinburgh program and it’s great exercise. We’ll be biking over 40 kilometres per day,” said McDougald. “I’ve never done anything like this, but I’m excited to try!”

What brings you to Drumheller? Steve: I heard about it and the dinosaur museum, so we decided to drive out while we’re staying in Calgary. What do you like most about Drumheller so far? Steve: These badlands are amazing and when you come to Drumheller, you don’t even know they’re there until you’re practically in them. What have you been up to? Samantha: We saw the Tyrrell. Steve: We’re probably going to do a bit
of exploring around town. Any favourite dinosaurs? Samantha: The long neck one, Camarasaurus. Steve: You can never beat T. rex, it captures everything that intrigues us about dinosaurs. If someone from Drumheller were to visit Brighton, what should they see? Steve: The sea and there’s the Royal Pavilion, which was built by a prince and made to look like the Taj Mahal. Would you come back to Drumheller? Steve: Definitely.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal
reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Missed the Turnpike
For more than a half-dozen years, Martin Neufeld has called Dinosaur RV Park his summer home. His 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser has also enjoyed the valley’s highways over the years. This unique whip was only built for two model years and came with some interesting features for the time, including a push button transmission, “Seat-omatic”, automatically adjusting seats and a power rear window. It is powered by a 368 V8 and produced nearly 300 horsepower. The car served as a pace car for the 1957 Indianapolis 500. Neufeld bought the car already restored, but did have the upholstery redone and added a continental kit. He told inSide Drumheller he took it to Rosebud to golf last week and had no trouble fitting six sets of clubs the trunk.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Shuswap Annual Cook-off This year, the category was ribs and wings – once again, difficult to choose a winner. At least everyone went home with full bellies and happy faces! As usual, there were some interesting and fun names for the dishes, such as “Gone with the Wing,” “Blair Wing Project,” and, for a rib dish, - “Bone of Contention.” The overall winning recipe was in the ribs category, despite some amazing wing flavors. The winner was appropriately named considering the summer we had. And to top it off, the cook-off began with the biggest storm of the year! The ribs were called, “Come Hell or High Water.” The champions proved that a good cooking method can outdo a complicated recipe, often calling for an excess of

ingredients! These ribs were finished with a basic store-bought sauce! (Noting that a goodquality sauce is also important.) I was told by the winning family that they used the following method: • Boil the ribs in water with a bit of maple syrup for about an hour. • Slice into 2-rib pieces. • Grill on the barbecue,
brushing with a good quality sauce. • To serve, slice again into individual ribs. The sauce on the ribs had a caramelized appearance with a “sticky appeal” that makes eating with the fingers all the more enjoyable. The summer is quickly slipping by, but we have plenty of barbecuing days still ahead of us to try these ribs. Bon Apetit!

Tour of Alberta excites local cycling enthusiasts Michael James | inSide Drumheller
Drumheller is going have its moment in the international spotlight on September 6 when the Tour of Alberta rolls through town. Though professional cycling is not as high profile as other sports in Alberta, local cycling enthusiast Gary Chambers is excited the event will be rolling through the area. “I think the town is in for a surprise with the magnitude of the sport. I don’t think you’ll get 34tfcb

There will be big riders and teams, like Garmin Sharpe, who are about as big as it gets. Last year, Ryder Hesjedal won the Giro d’Italia,” said Chambers. “There are UCI points in the line, so they will be treating it like a serious race.” Spectators will have two opportunities to see the riders come through Drumheller. First the riders pass north through town to the Morrin Corner, where they travel west, across the Morrin Bridge, and then loop back to Drumheller where they finish at the Badlands Community Facility. Spectators who are new to the sport are in for a surprise according to Chambers. “When a pelloton comes through, the group is so tight they’re literally within an inch of each other. They’ll comfortably be doing 50 to 60 kilometres per hours,” said Chambers. “We’re going to have a good finish
here. For most of the race it’ll probably be a tight group with maybe one breakaway group. There will probably be a sprint finish.” For the riders, Chambers feels the hills, which at first glance seem daunting, shouldn’t present much of a challenge to the Tour riders. “For those riders, there’s not going to be anything more than a speed bump. It might surprise people, but the hills probably won’t be much of a challenge for the riders,” said Chambers. The biggest boon from the race could be a persistent effect on tourism. “When they put cycling on TV, they tend to use a lot of filler content. They talk about the landscape and history of the area. Drumheller has so much to offer,” said Chambers. “Drumheller will benefit a lot. We have some really great cycling here. The road cycling is second to none in the province.”

the spectator numbers of more established races, but you will get quite a few fans following the race around Alberta,” said Chambers. The Town of Drumheller is preparing for 10,000 visitors during the race. “We’re preparing for that many people. I think it might be over generous, but those are the numbers from the Tour of Alberta. They say that’s what is seen in similar sized communities,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. “If we get 10,000 folks coming to Drumheller, it’s going to be a happening place, that’s for sure.” Chambers spoke with inSide Drumheller about the scope of the event, what’s in store for the riders, and how it could benefit the town. Though the race is new, Tour of Alberta officials have announced a number of high profile teams competing in the race. “It’s an UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) sanctioned event.
