Drumheller RCMP detachment welcomes two officers to valley inSide Donella Swan | STREETERS Constable Mark Amatto a great place to raise a family. inSide Drumheller

The days are growing shorter and leaves are starting to turn yellow, so inSide Drumheller asks: “Summer is almost over, is there anything you’re looking forward to?”

Mercedes Bagshawe “I like the fall, it’s my favourite time of year. The leaves change and there’s pumpkin pie.”

The Drumheller valley has become the new home of Constable Mark Amatto and his family. Coming down from his post in North West Territories, Amatto said moving back down to Southern Alberta was a welcomed change. “I’m from Crowsnest Pass originally, and I have always liked southern Alberta. I chose to come to Drumheller specifically because it’s a very family oriented place,” said Constable Amatto. He said transferring from up north was his choice because it was just time to leave and Drumheller seemed like

“I volunteered to be posted in the North West Territories, and the experience was good but Drumheller is a nice farm-folk kind of town like what I was used to growing up,” said Amatto. He said he enjoys golfing, playing hockey, baseball, and hunting in his spare time. “I think I’m going to fit in around here,” said Amatto. Come November of this year, it will mark six years of service in the RCMP for Contable Amatto. “It was a sense of patriotism that led me to join. It was either going to be the military or the RCMP,” said (l-r) Sarah Amatto, Constable Mark Amatto and their one-year-old son Nate. Amatto. Constable Amatto said the transfer to Drumheller was a welcomed change and that the valley seems like a very family friendly place.

Kevin Grimeau “I prefer summer, but I’m looking forward to hockey and skiing.”

Constable Tom Boden transferred to Drumheller from Grande Prairie. He said he likes the small town feel the valley has to offer, and that being closer to his family farm in Camrose was a big draw for him to be here. inSide photo by Donella Swan

Constable Tom Boden Cristin Low “My summer holiday, which is in the fall. I’m going to miss summer, it’s always too short.”

Stone Alberts “Next holidays.”

Transferring from Grande Prairie, about a month ago, the choice to move to Drumheller was an easy one for Constable Tom Boden. Growing up near Camrose, Constable Boden said the change was welcomed, as he could be closer to home. “I still like to go to the family farm near Camrose as often as I can to help out,” sad Constable Boden. He said the landscape of the Drumheller valley was another big draw for him. “It’s neat coming down from the flat, prairie landcape into a desert-like area,” said Constable Boden. In his spare time, Constable Boden said he likes to snowmobile in the mountains, get in a few rounds of golf when the weather permits, and hunt. It has been four years since Constable Boden joined the RCMP. “It was my lifelong dream to become a member of the RCMP. I began going on ride-along’s when I was 11 years old and ever since, it has been my ambition,” said Constable Boden.

This year, our theme was an ethnic one. Every participant, from the cabins in our small bay, was to cook a dish representing their own heritage. This year, an added prize category was for costume as well. The overall winner, which is determined by everyone’s vote for taste, went to our newest neighbors – cabin #9. The dish was handed down from her mother, of Dutch descent – frucht boden (a lovely fruit flan). Winners in the other categories were for the name, which went to Spotted Dick a currant pudding/cake submitted by a British cabin owner. The costume prize was awarded to the neighbor dressed in a Viking helmet serving up meatballs (Biff a la Lindstrom) in a Viking boat fashioned from foil. The appearance vote was won by the frucht boden as well, with Scotch eggs being a close second. An honorable mention went to “uuni pannukakku.” It is a simple Finnish delicacy – a very thin cake-like pancake drizzled with maple syrup. It is one I know I will be serving up soon! In honor of my Ukranian roots, I served “choucraut,” which I had in this column one year for Ukranian New Year’s. I was surprised how well-liked it was, assuming not everyone is a big fan of sauerkraut, especially. I guess the combination of perogies and sausage added to its appeal. Leftover Sangria from a beach wedding, the previous weekend, was added to the

entries for everyone’s enjoyment. Once again, a good time was had by all. Shuswap Cookoff 2012 winning recipe:

Mom’s Boden (Frucht Boden) 4 eggs 4 Tbsp. sugar 1 tsp. lemon extract 4 Tbsp. flour ½ tsp. baking powder Separate eggs. Beat yolks with sugar. Add lemon, beat, then set aside. Beat whites until stiff. Add yolks to whites by folding gently. Add flour and baking powder, again folding gently. Pour into a well-oiled flan pan. Bake at 350 for 15 – 20 minutes. Fill with any fruit you wish. Put a glaze on top and serve with whipped cream. *suggested fruits to use: blackberries, kiwi, strawberries, mango, peaches, cherries, nectarines, blueberries…. Whatever fruits available. The two at the cook-off had nice mixtures of different types. 34m

WORKS West Nile Virus detected in Southern Alberta

The first case of West Nile Virus in Alberta has been discovered south of Calgary. While the main thrust of the Town’s mosquito abatement program is complete it is still monitoring. file photo Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Alberta residents are being asked to take precautions as the first case of West Nile Virus this year has been discovered in the province. On Tuesday morning, Alberta Health Services announced that a case of West Nile had been discovered south of Calgary. The person infected was an adult female and Dr. David Strong, AHS Acting South Zone Medical Officer of Health, said the person has experienced non-neurological symptoms. “She had not had any travel outside of Alberta so she was infected by a mosquito in Alberta,” he said. West Nile has been non-existent in Alberta since 2010 and there has not been a case that was not travel related since 2009. It peaked in 2007 with 320 cases. The virus has seen resurgence in North America. The US Centre of Disease Control has reported 1,118 human cases in 2012 and 41 deaths. This is the highest number since 1999, when West Nile was first detected in the US. Dr. Strong said the conditions were favourable for mosquitoes. “We had a very warm summer here, which is why there is an increased risk over last year,” he said. “The risk is throughout the province, more so in the south but throughout the province.” Rather than being reactive, Strong said the best policy is to continue to protect yourself. “The focus today has

been what it has always been, around the precautions that people can take to protect themselves,” said Strong. “Primarily we are talking about personal protection, the use of DEET products, wearing long sleeved, light coloured clothing, trying to avoid those times that mosquitoes are most active in the early morning and dust, and wearing a hat to protect the skin.” He adds that another precaution to take beyond self protection is to limit areas that mosquitoes could breed, such as standing water. “These are the same precautions we are always emphasizing every year,” he said. Symptoms of non neurological West Nile Virus can be everything from fatigue to muscle stiffness, fever, rash and sometimes gastro intestinal symptoms. Often those infected have no

symptoms. Neurological symptoms can be more serious. According to Alberta Health Services, a person with neurological syndrome may experience tremors, drowsiness, confusion, swallowing problems, high fever, unconsciousness, paralysis and even death. “West Nile Virus in-

fection can cause severe illness with debilitating, lifelong effects, particularly in older adults,” said Strong. “I urge all Albertans to continue to fight the bite.” For more information on West Nile Virus and how to protect yourself go to www.fightthebite. ca.

What is your favourite part about the valley? The weather for sure. I love the sunshine and the summers are usually hot. I also like our fairly mild winters. Anything you don’t like? Just that Drumheller is such a busy place during the summer time. There are so many visitors! It can make it more difficult to get around. What is the best part of your job? I love interacting with the seniors. They always have fascinating stories and I’m glad I get to hear them. If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why? Telepathy would be neat. I’d like to know what people are thinking sometimes and it would make communication a lot easier. Where would your dream vacation be? I would love to visit Australia. Seeing all the different animals would be interesting, in particular the koala bear. They are adorable. What is the one thing you are most afraid of in this world? Bugs. Bugs in general! I just don’t like the fact that they are creepy and crawly. What has been the best moment of your life so far? I’ve had two. The day I was married was wonderful. The day I had my son Alex, who is two now, was also very special. If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? I think I would have to choose fruit. It’s tastes good and it’s healthy for you. What is the best book you’ve ever read? The Colors of Darkness by James Patterson. It’s a great mystery and keeps you guessing right to the end. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? Follow your dreams.

Just grabs ya Nola Wallace’s 1972 Ford Maverick Grabber is truly a one-of-a-kind and holds a special place in her heart. Nola’s older brother Lou Brown was the second owner of the unique little coupe. He sold it to her after she graduated and she loved it. In fact, she drove it in to the ground. Lou bought it back with a eye to restoring the car, and worked

his magic. About three years ago Lou passed and Nola inherited the whip. The Grabber was a muscle car themed trim package and it was powered along by a tough little 302, a spoiler and unique dual dome hood, making it a one-of-a-kind ride that could also pack a punch. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Over 5 km of pathways in Welcome to Drumheller! Where are you two visiting from? (Cynsier) We’re from Beijing in China. Is this your ďŹ rst time here? Yes, it is. Did you just come to see Drumheller, or are you visiting anywhere else while you’re in Canada? We’ve been to see the mountains in B.C. and then we came here. We’ll be spending today looking around Drumheller. What brought you to Drumheller? I heard Drumheller is famous for dinosaurs and the scenery is so beautiful. Three of our friends came here a few years ago and told us about it. I knew I had to come.

What have you seen in Drumheller so far? We’re on our way to see the museum. We’ve been inside the dinosaur [World’s Largest Dinosaur] and we saw the Hoodoos. What do you like most about Drumheller so far? The dinosaurs, certainly! Do you have a favourite dinosaur? Tyrannosaurus. If someone from Drumheller went to visit Beijing, what should they see? The Great Wall and Forbidden City. There are many other things to do, but those two are must-sees for everyone.

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, balance and harmony will reign supreme this week. If there is something you have been meaning to change, now is the time to get it done. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Intentions can be lost when communication is not effective, Taurus. So don’t expect someone to understand simply by your actions alone. Explain yourself along the way. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, sometimes you give off the impression that everything is going well, even when it is not. Hiding your emotions works sometimes, but this week find another strategy. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, most of the time you seem slow and steady. But every once in a while you show some passion that others may not expect from you. These sudden bursts are human. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, you can’t change the path the stars have set in your place even if you want to. It’s best to simply accept the cards and make the most of them. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, speak up if you are not satisfied with your relationship. Now is the time to set things straight and make your voice heard. The other person will be receptive. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, you are ready to change careers or travel for a change of pace. This could be the ideal time to make your move because there isn’t anything pressing going on.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, your surroundings may try your patience this week. Rise above any potential confrontations, and you will come out looking and feeling better because of it. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 You may be misunderstood all day, but that won’t put a damper on your good mood, Sagittarius. Let others think what they want to think and simply carry on. CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, a new person in your life will become a close friend for a long time. This person will have the qualities you need the most right now, and friendship will be easy.

the exhibition season for the Dragons. They won 6-3 against their southern division rivals, the Olds Grizzlys. The Dragons let the puck fly, shooting 55 shots to the Grizzlys 24. Head coach and general manager Brian Curran was encouraged by what he saw. “I think the kids were a little nervous in the first period, but it was nice to see quite a bit of speed from the boys. They looked like they had a lot fun and they certainly deserved that game. It’s a great win for them. It should help their confidence. I was impressed by what they did. It’s a great start,” said Curran. Dragons fell behind initially, but worked to tie the game and eventually add several more goals. “I thought the kids worked hard for 60 minutes. Probably the most positive sign was when we tied the game up 3-3 and the boys stepped it up even more and got three more goals,” said Curran. While winning the first game of the 2012/2013 season, the most important aspect of

the game was being able to see the boys in action and parsing the roster down to the team that will start the regular season. “It was a rookie game, but still for the success I put a lot of stock into it, because it’s camp and we’re trying to get things down to a certain number. It’s my players, my young guys, out there and there are decisions to make,” said Curran. “There are a couple really young kids we’re sending back. We thought they deserved the opportunity to play the game, because they worked hard. We just felt, with the numbers we have now, it’s better for them to step back and we’ll look at them during the season. We’ll possibly affiliate them, because they did very well.” The Dragons have just under a week until their next game. Until then, the Dragons are working hard to train, learn, and earn a spot on the final roster. “That’s what we’re in training camp for; to get our systems in place and the guys in the shape I need them. We’ve got to work on defensive zone coverage, neutral zone, forecheck, power play, penalty kill, face off alignment, and 6 on 5’s. There’s a tonne of work to do,” said Curran. Dragons start in the gym at 6:45 a.m. The Dragons will be at home on Wednesday, August 29, facing the Calgary Canucks. However, Curran and his squad are remaining focused on getting things right. “We’re not even thinking about it right now. Right now, we’re thinking about getting ourselves where we need to be. Our goal is to make other teams understand when they step into the arena this year, it’s going to be like it was years ago. This is not a place you want to come in and play. We’ve got to get that attitude and atmosphere back,” said Curran. “We’ve got show our com-

Head coach and general manager of the Drumheller Dragons, Brian Curran (foreground), and the Dragon hopefuls have been working hard at training camp this past week. However, the team did take some time to show the Olds Grizzlys their tenacity in a 6-3 Dragons victory in Olds on Tuesday evening. Red Eye tourney attracts 14 teams Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

This weekend some slopitch troopers will be under the bright lights at the Annual Red Eye Memorial Tournament. The tournament in benefit of the Morgan Jayne Project and the Chris Bolin Memorial Fund is heading into its’ fourth year. Organizers have moved the tournament up and the action starts this Friday at 7 p.m. and goes until Sunday afternoon. This year the tournament has attracted 14 teams to the Morrin Bridge recreational area. To find this, simply head north on Highway 56 to the Morrin Corner and head west on Highway 27 for about 10 kilometres. This is the first time they have used this venue and it has allowed organizers to expand. Organizers encourage everyone, even if they are not playing to come out and enjoy the weekend. There is camping on site and a concession running all weekend. Best of all the fun is for a good cause. Fred Makowecki of the Morgan Jayne Project says there is always room for those who want to contribute to these causes to volunteer. For more information, contact Makowecki at 403-820-2386.
