OPINION Greentree Elementary prepares to welcome students Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller
Staff are hard at work polishing and cleaning Greentree Elementary in time for the first bell of the new school year. Classes at Greentree begin at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2. “I guess most parents are probably fairly excited, if you watch the Staples commercials,” laughs new school principal Erin CampbellBentley. The principal, teachers and educational assistants returned to school August 26, with staff in the office starting the week prior. Campbell-Bentley said the close to 30 teachers plus the staff are looking forward to the kids’ return, and hoping the kids are excited to return to school. There will be more students attending Greentree Elementary as school enrolment is up for 2014/15. Student numbers projected in the spring were 450, and CampbellBentley said the numbers have reached over the 460 mark. As a result of the higher enrolment, the porta-
Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) said the kindergarten room received new flooring, and changes were made to
the Library. “I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone and having the opportunity to express
my excitement for learning,” said the new principal, “and show everyone what we have to offer.”

ble that was added to the school in May will become the grade six class homeroom. It doesn’t look like the school will need to add more staff, though. “At this point in time, we’re sitting really good with class sizes,” Campbell-Bentley notes. New at Greentree Elementary is the school’s addition of the hockey program to grade four classes this year. The hockey program had previously been available to only grade five and six classes. Currently, repairs are underway on the asphalt close to the school, and new asphalt was put down on the playground. Tahra Sabir with the

thought I am looking forward to Appys on the deck during Labor Day weekend and reminiscing about the summer as we say goodbye and watch the fall season’s approach. I put a spin on a buffalo chicken ball recipe I had because I had some ground lamb that I was contemplating what to do with. The curry hot sauce is excellent on chicken wings, too! If you like hot spicy foods, you can have a great time toying with these ingredients! Buffalo curry lamb balls 1 pound ground lamb 1 egg 1/2 cup breadcrumbs 1 tablespoon tandoori seasoning, or gram masala, or curry powder (I had a tikka masala rub that I used) Two cloves of garlic crushed
1/4 cup blue cheese Mix all ingredients except the cheese. Using about a tablespoon at a time, form into a ball around some of the blue cheese. (use just enough cheese so that the cheese is enclosed and it doesn’t melt out during baking) Bake at 3:50 for 20 minutes Sauce: One cup Frank’s hot sauce 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon honey 1 tablespoon curry powder or more according to your liking Cook over low heat and simmer while the meatballs are cooking. Pour over cooked meatballs. Serve with ranch or blue cheese dressing

Who are you? (l-r): Geoff and Mike Williams. Where are you from? Canmore, and Mike now lives in Toronto. What brings you to Drumheller? For a visit, I (Geoff ) actually worked on Highway 9 and South Railway Avenue in the 1980s. Anything on your tour list? We never went to the museum this time, we walked downtown and along Riverside Avenue to see what has changed. What do you enjoy about Drum-

heller? It is a really different drive out here. Is there anything in Drumheller you are missing? Maybe a Jewish deli, I’m not Jewish, but I like smoked meat. If we visited Canmore, what would you recommend we see? The Mountains, everything is related to the hills. There is a lot more horse riding in Canmore than most realize. River rafting is making a comeback since the flood and it has carved some new rapids.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal
reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Cancer fundraiser going to the dogs Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller
A new cancer society fundraiser involving man’s best friend is coming to Drumheller in September. Siobhan Doherty, spokesperson Canadian Cancer Society, said Bark for Life is scheduled for ParticiPark, also known as Riverside Park, for Saturday, September 27, from noon to 3 p.m.
Bark for Life is to fundraise for the Canadian Cancer Society September 27.
Doherty describes the course as a cone track set up around the trees in the park where participants can walk their dogs on a leash. She said people fundraise to walk for the three hours, and although the society’s goal is for each person to raise $100, there is certainly no set minimum amount required. Bark for Life was new to Alberta last year, with the Canadian Cancer Society holding one event in Edmonton, one in Lethbridge. “We had our cancer survivors saying my dog was my caregiver, my dog was always there to listen, my dog was always there to support me when I came home (from treatments),” said Doherty, “And so, out of that, the idea was born to let’s have an event that’s dog centered.” The event is also to honour those of us who have lived with cancer, people who have passed away from cancer, and to join the fight back against cancer, Doherty explains. There is a participant fee of $10 when signing up on the website, and Doherty said that is so all the fundraising dollars go back to the Canadian Cancer Society. Drumheller’s September 27 event will include snacks, games and prizes, and Doherty encourages those in the area interested in Drumheller’s Bark for Life to sign up online at cancer.ca/barkforlife, or contact her at 403-303-3517. “We’re just really trying to encourage people to come out - it’ll be a lot of fun - with their dogs, their kids.”

SCHARFL Elda May (Hall) June 24, 1921 - August 25, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Elda May (Hall) Scharfl on August 25, 2014 at the age of 93. Mom was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Annie and Richard Hall. On December 2, 1939 she married Alfred Scharfl. They had five children in Nova Scotia, then Mom left Nova Scotia to join Alfred in Alberta. She travelled by train with her one daughter and four sons to East Coulee, where Alfred was working in the coal mines. They then had five more girls and three boys, a total of thirteen children. They stayed in East Coulee until the mines shut down in 1971. Mom and Dad then moved to Drumheller, and lived there the remainder of their lives. Elda was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Alfred (in July of 1990), her mother, father, two of her brothers, one sister, her granddaughter Tereasa “Terry”Scharfl in April of 2008, and her grandson Russell Scharfl in December of 2011. Elda will be greatly missed by her children Ralph Scharfl (Maggie) of Fort McMurray, Lariane Combs of Drayton Valley, Rudy Scharfl (Marie) of Calgary, Wilfred “Whip” Scharfl of Peachland (BC), Alfred Jr. Scharfl (Margie) of Drayton Valley, Vivian Deitz (Cliff ) of East Coulee, Louise Diprose (Tom) of Drumheller, Lynda Heitrich of Etzikom, Carol Ross of Calgary, Louis Scharfl of Calgary, Ken Scharfl of Grande Prairie, Keith Scharfl of Calgary and Denise Hawranik of Oakville (ON). She is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, thirty three great grandchildren and two great great granddaughters. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements. As per Elda’s wishes, a private family funeral service will be at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home on September 1, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Following the service the family would like to welcome friends to share in a lunch held at the East Coulee Community Hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart to Heart Society, Box 162, Drumheller, AB, T0J 0Y0. 35p

What do you like about being here? Dave- the scenery. That’s what I was looking forward to in coming up here. Sam - Absolutely the scenery. I never imagined we had a place like this in Canada. I’m in love with the Badlands. Matt - It’s the only place in Canada like this. How long have you all worked with Tough Mudder? Sam and Matt - since August 2012. Dave since May 2011.
Are the crew allowed to take part in the Tough Mudders? Sam - yes, they certainly are. Dave - we encourage it (if they’re not working). It helps them see what they’ve been working toward. How does design of the course set-up work? Sam - we get the drawings, the blue prints, and we can pitch designs. Dave - I work on the innovation team that comes up new obstacles. What if kids want to do Tough Mudder? Dave and Sam - A “MiniMudder” course is set up in the festival area at the Stampede Grounds for parents to take their kids on, for ages 4 to 12. We take the safest obstacles to make the “Mini-Mudder” course. What’s important to remember about taking on the Tough Mudder challenge? Dave - Our event is not a race. People do it for the experience. Sam And self challenge. I saw a couple 75 years old in Toronto do the whole course in five hours. I haven’t put in months
What if Mudders hit a really difficult obstacle? Sam - If you can’t cross an obstacle, go around it - there is no disqualification. If you can’t swim, don’t jump in the water. The team work is the most important thing. And it’s amazing to see. What’s in place in terms of course safety? We take precautions in terms of initial design, and checks and balances in terms of procedures. Each obstacle, once designed, has a safety review. Sam - Tough Mudder has a structural engineer review the course before the event. What about first aid? Dave and Sam - Almost every obstacle has medical staff. The most frequent injuries we see are running injuries cramps, rolled ankles, dehydration. How can participants try to avoid dehydration? There are five water stations on course, some of them have snack stops included. What would you say as encouragement to those taking on the course? With the amount of teamwork on our course, nothing is impossible. You’ll never be more than an arm’s reach from someone who can help. Final thoughts? “La nature est tres belle ici.” - Sam (The nature is most beautiful here.)
