At the meeting of Town Council on July 29, Administration set the date for the new Town Hall to come online. Everything is expected to be ready on August 12. “On the 12th (of August) we should be up and functioning.

We’re going to close Town Hall on the preceding Friday,” said Allan Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Drumheller. Over the next two weeks, staff will gradually move smaller items, such as boxes and furniture, over to the new Town Hall in the Drumheller Civic Centre.

“The intention is, as we have rainy days, to get staff to move as much over as possible over the next two weeks. There will still be a big push at the end with the computers and getting everything hooked up,” said CAO Ray Romanetz. On Friday, August 9, Town Hall will be closed, though the

403-823-6300 number will still be working, and staff will begin the process of moving everything left in the old Town Hall. “We will still have the emergency numbers functioning. There will be limited services through Town Hall that day,” said Kendrick.

The new hall is largely finished, though crews are working to correct several minor deficiencies. Earlier this year, projections were that the moving process would begin in June. Minor delays and the flood pushed back the timetable. Council made the decision to move early in 2012 after $1.5 million in grant money from the province was secured. It was felt Town Hall should be in a central location and brought up to current building codes. It was felt renovating the old Town Hall would prove to be far more expensive. In total, the renovations and move will cost roughly $2 million.

Emily Fletcher “Definitely if something happened with family or friends. It would have to be monumental.”

At approximately 19:40 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013, an offender was found to have been assaulted at the Drumheller Institution, a medium-security federal penitentiary. Correctional Officers immediately responded and assessed his condition. The offender was transported by ambulance to an outside hospital for further assessment and treatment. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time. The RCMP and the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) are investigating the incident. The Institution was put

on a lockdown to facilitate the investigation and search. According to media relations officer, Rob Skoronski, on Thursday they began a modified reopening and anticipate returning to full operations this morning (Friday). “The investigation is ongoing,” he said. No staff or other inmates were injured during this incident. In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.

Following an assault, the Drumheller Institution was placed in lockdown to facilitate the investigation. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Fuel thief gets probation Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Rumsey man has received probation after using an installation at a well site near his home as his personal fuel tank. James Hussey appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, July 12. He pleaded guilty to three counts of theft under $5,000. The court heard how, on three occasions, he drove his truck to a rural well site where diesel was available and ďŹ lled his truck. The total amount of fuel taken was about $1,500.

After the ďŹ rst occasion, the company installed video surveillance, which witnessed the following events. Hussey admitted to the thefts. Duty counsel for Hussey told the court that typically Hussey makes his living from selling automobiles and machinery, but was going through a slow patch. He spent 10 days in custody prior to appearing Friday in court. The judge agreed with a submission from crown and defense for one day in custody served and a probation order for 12 months.

Bandera, Texas

Amalia Heinen What brings you to Drumheller? I’m here for a family reunion. My mom’s side of the family is from here. How long have you been visiting? Four days. Done anything cool so far? I’ve seen some of the dinosaurs around town, gone swimming, and shopping. Then, we’re having the reunion this weekend. What do you like most about Drumheller so far? I like how it’s not really hot and dry. It’s

to

a little cooler. I also like my cousins! Have any favourite dinosaurs? I like Triceratops. They’re plant eaters, so that’s good. If someone from Drumheller were to visit Bandera, what should they see? We have a small museum. It has a two-headed lamb inside and has a lot of other stuff about Bandera. It’s a very western place. You’ll see two people every day riding horses around. Would you come back to Drumheller? Yeah!

Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Highway luxury There is no American car name more legendary than Cadillac. For more than 100 years, no other marquee has represented luxury, style and prestige. You throw on some flat back paint and intricate pin-stripping, and it amps up the cool factor a notch too. Rav Lal’s 1962 Caddy was a puzzle when he got it. It didn’t take him long to assemble and get it back on the road. The 1961-1964’s were the last of the big finned Cadillacs as the long lines of the 1960’s became vogue. It is powered by a 390 V8 that may not get the two and half ton sled off the line very quickly, but it will keep cruising smoothly down the highway. Besides, in a Cadillac you don’t need an amped up quarter-mile time to look good, you just need … a Cadillac. Weekender photo by Patrick Kolafa

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

HAPPENINGS

on the

run by Michael James

I’m turning over a new leaf in regards to my health and have pledged to run the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon. Every two weeks I’ll write about my training and what I’ve learned. Throughout my journey to get in shape, there have been quite a few hurdles I’ve had to overcome. Perhaps one of the most difficult has been trying to eat healthy. I don’t eat too badly, but I don’t go out of my way to eat healthy. On top of that, I have a pretty big sweet tooth. Since I began running, I’ve come to realize how much a good diet impacts performance. On a day where I don’t eat as well, it’s a struggle to run. When I eat right, it feels like I can go on forever. To help get my eating habits in shape, I spoke with Alberta Health Services registered dietician Shelley Cooper.

“Being active and eating right go hand-inhand. If you’re putting in the time for exercise, you might as well do the same for eating. It makes my runs go so much easier,” said Cooper. The basic goal is to get the minimum amount of each food group as outlined by the Canadian Food Guide. “We really focus on having a balance of foods from all four food groups. I find a lot of athletes aren’t getting enough carbs from eating vegetables, fruit, or grain products. For you, I would suggest eating eight to ten servings of fruit or vegetables per day and at least one dark green or orange fruit or veg. They are a great source of energy,” said Cooper. For ladies, Cooper suggest seven to eight servings of fruit of vegetables. In addition, Cooper

suggested eating two servings of dairy and two to three of meat, with at least two servings of fish each week and eating meat alternatives, such as legumes or hummus. As for my sweet tooth, Cooper suggested when I get a craving, to have some fruit or yogurt instead. It’s also important to eat regularly throughout the day. Probably one of my worst eating habits is skipping breakfast and sometimes lunch. “I definitely think any athlete should have breakfast everyday. Even if you run in the morning, you should have something. Eating three meals a day and two to three snacks per day, helps keep up your energy throughout the day. Plus, you should be eating a vegetable or fruit with each,” said Cooper. Plus, it’s vital not to overeat. “Listen to your body and stop when you are full. Even if you eat a meal and are still hungry, remember, it takes time for the brain to register you are full,” said Cooper. A healthy diet isn’t

just about what you eat. What you drink can have a huge impact on your performance as well. “It’s really important to make sure you’re getting enough fluids and water is the best choice,” said Cooper. “Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Thirst is not a good indicator of hydration. Stay hydrated throughout the day. Dehydration can really impact performance, so I encourage keeping a water bottle with you and sipping on it throughout the day.” A good indicator of hydration is the colour of your urine. If it resembles apple juice, you’re dehydrated. Also, Cooper recommends staying away from sports drinks unless you are running for more than an hour, and to stay far away from energy drinks. Now that I have some free time, I’m getting back into running. On my last run I was able to do 15 kilometres without stopping, so I’m feeling pretty confident with just over a month left until the race.
