OPINION

2 - Friday, August 3, 2012

August long weekend has finally arrived. inSide Drumheller asks: “What are your plans for the weekend?”

Prestin Coultes, 10 “I’ll most likely be helping my dad around the farm. Hopefully no more rain comes.”

Edna Kolenz “I think I will stay at home and crochet some dishcloths.”

Storm blasts area with winds, damaging hail Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The area was ham-

mered on Tuesday night following a series of summer storms that brought high winds, heavy rain and hail to the valley and surrounding countryside. Much of Central Alberta, including the D r u m h el l e r-Th re e Hills area, was under tornado warnings or tornado watches from the early evening on, and when the downpour hit, marble sized hail was not uncommon.

“It was a pretty narrow strip, I don’t think the storm was more than four of five miles wide,” Bruce Sommerville

One of the strongest bouts of weather swept just north of Drumheller, hitting areas north from

Three Hills east. Bruce Sommerville, Ag Fieldman for Kneehill County, said the Town of Three Hills was hit hard leaving piles of hail in yards and on the streets. He said most of the county escaped great damage to crops. “It was a pretty narrow strip, I don’t think the storm was more than four of five miles wide,” said Sommerville. While it was a small swath that hit Tuesday night, Sommerville says this has been a busy year for storms. “There was one in the WindborneTrochu area about a month a go, and then a couple weeks later it went through the Carbon area, and now the central part of the county,” he said. “It has been awhile since we have had this much hail damage in Kneehill County. Areas in Starland County were not spared, and they too

have seen their share of storms. Starland Ag Fieldman Al Hampton said Munson had a big storm on July 1, Rowley was hit on June 15 and the one Tuesday night the storm went from the Red Deer River at about Highway 27 and swept right across to Delia. “With good crops usually comes horrific hail, there is no ques-

tion about it,” said Hampton. “As soon as you get a more mature crop the ability for it to recover comes very limited.” “That’s a hail storm, things can look pretty awesome, but within minutes it can all change.” Highway safety was greatly reduced. The Strathmore RCMP sent out a warning to drivers on Highway 1 near Highway 21 and

the Gleichen area at about 10 p.m. that visibility had been reduced to zero. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins said the Drumheller RCMP never received any calls related to the wild weather, but he does caution the public to be aware of how quickly conditions can change.

The Badlands Belles are sure visitors are going to love touring the Badlands, they are running trials of various tours in hopes that one day tour operators will build on it. Bob Davis, executive directors of Canadian Badlands. Explained the Badlands Belles have developed various tours in the region including the Drumheller valley. “The tour that has been organized for this area is called Echoes of the Badlands and all the tours are tours of the history and characters of the region they are in,” said Davis. “It is more than just looking at geography and sight seeing, it is touring, learning and experiencing some authentic historic aspects.” Davis explains the Badlands Belles have organized the tours and is put on by tourism operators in the area. Canadian Badlands was involved with facilitating and planning, working with each site and helping to promote and prove that tours like this could be viable. “The idea is to try and create the kind of tour that tourists would pay for so it could become a regular commercial activity,” said Davis. In all, there are eight tours including the Wonders of Water Tour in the Bassano and Brooks area, Prairie Catalogue Homes in the Acadia Valley, Empress-Oyen area and the Mormon Trail Tour in the Cardston, Raymond McGrath area, to name a few. Davis adds that municipalities in the area of the tours have all contributed to the project as they see the value of such tours. “When each municipality contributes a little, they all benefit a lot because a lot gets done, as opposed to doing it all themselves,” said Davis. Owen Thompson, one of the managers at the East Coulee School Museum is involved with the Echoes of the Badlands Tour. He said the tour starts in Downtown Drumheller and heads east to Wayne for lunch, out to Dorothy and then back through East Coulee. He sees the value

The Royal Tyrrell Museum is swimming in aquatic prehistoric beasts these days. Their relationship with Syncrude has resulted in the collection of two specimens from a Syncrude mine near Fort McMurray. On May 11, shovel operator Jason Young, had the surprise of the lifetime when he noticed his shovel had uncovered some dark rocks amidst the light grey rocks typical of the region. “I was digging into the mine face and came across something of a different colour. I got down and had a closer looks and realized what it was,” said Young. “I remember being at the Tyrrell Museum when I was younger and knew what a fossil looks like just from seeing them there. When I saw this one in the area I was, it was pretty amazing.” Young had taken the fossil identification course with Syncrude as well. After he saw the fossils, the liaison for the Tyrrell was called in and the museum was contacted. “If they notice anything, they stop digging right away and then our liaison with the Royal Tyrrell Museum comes out and takes a look and contacts the museum. the Tyrrell to make sure we preserve the fossil, because it’s a resource shared by all Albertans,” said Cheryl Robb, media advisor for Syncrude. “It’s exciting for all of us at Syncrude. I think all of us are kids at heart.” Another specimen had been found earlier on May 7 and Tyrrell staff were going to be heading up anyway to collect a specimen uncovered in November, 2011. All three were brought to the Tyrrell. The two newer fossils are from the early Cretaceous period, roughly 112 to 114 million years ago. The fossils have been identified as being Easmosaurs, predatory marine reptiles characterized by long necks, small heads, and barrelshaped bodies. The May 11 specimen is estimated to be 70 to 80 percent complete and has a partial skull preserved. However, preparation of the specimens may take some time due to the quality of the bone and the number of specimens the museum needs to prepare. “The bone is like compressed talcum powder and the matrix is really hard. The preparation is going to be slow,” said Dr. Don Henderson, curator of dinosaurs at the Tyrrell Museum. “We’ve had this flood of specimens from around the province. We’re just going to have to wait for a bit.” Because the fossils are still in the rock, it is unknown at the moment if they represent new species of Elasmosaur or are specimens of Wapuskanectes, an Elasmosaur found roughly ten years ago from the same area. “We can’t tell. We’ve kept them in the rock to help keep them together.” “For the one we found in November, the centra [vertebrae] on the neck are elongate. The skull we’ve got is elongate. There have been a number of specimens found at the Syncrude North Mine over the years. It is unclear at this time what caused the concentration of fossils in the area. “We need the stratigraphic [the layer of rock] position to test any hypotheses,” said Henderson. “It may be an area where ancient wind and water currents concentrated carcasses. Unless you know they are all from the same time, the palaeogeography will shift over time. We just have to wait a few more years and get accurate vertical and horizontal positions and plot them on maps. Then we’ll get a better picture.” Henderson estimated preparation would wait until at least October of this year. The three specimens are being housed in unprepared storage for now.

Bert and Liesbeth Dournbos The Netherlands Who are you? Bert and Liesbeth Dournbos Where are you from? The Netherlands What brings you to Drumheller? We are on vacation. When we were planning where we wanted to go, Drumheller seemed to stick out to us. The dinosaurs of course, but also the history and the landscape really drew us here. We have had family members travel here who said it was wonderful and that also helped us choose our destination. What do you like most about the valley so far? So far we are enjoying the landscape. It’s so different than anywhere else.

Is there anything you haven’t liked about your visit so far? Only the thunderstorm that came through on Tuesday night. That’s not something anyone can control, it’s just the weather but it was a little scary being in the motor home while tornado warnings were being issued over the radio. If we were to travel to the Netherlands, what would you tell us to go see? The Hauge, which is the seat of the Dutch government and parliament. We also suggest trying a dish which we consider fast food. Croquettes is something we consider to be a treat, it has a meat sauce in the center with a crispy outside.

Throughout summertime, The Weekender will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

This Summer at the Drumheller Church of the Nazarene

Skate park plan catches air submitted The Weekender

The innovative skateboard park project envisioned for Centennial Park is poised to move forward with a more detailed site assessment with support from primary project stakeholders, ATCO Electric and the Town of Drumheller. The project, initiated by the Drumheller Association of Skateboarding Enthusiasts (DASE) in 2010, began with a small group of community minded entrepreneurs interested in exploring options for development of facilities to complement and enhance existing community amenities. Through the process of community engagement, the vision for the project has expanded to become part of larger community Centennial Legacy planning, with broad community representation. The Community Task Force established to lead the project is excited with the new direction and is pleased to see plans moving forward. Task Force Chairperson, Brooke Chris-

tianson, sees the project as enhancing one of Drumheller’s most precious and iconic public spaces. “Centennial Park is a gathering place for residents and visitors alike, providing festival and play space, with historic significance that dates back to the Town’s inception,” he said. Already a community and tourist hub, the park will become a primary destination enhanced by the world class skateboard park. By incorporating existing, compatible amenities such as the spray park, pool, dinosaur, trails, and play areas, new development will enhance the Town’s public face. This integration of recreation, tourism and cultural activities will have significant local impact. The more detailed site assessment is needed at this stage to determine the level of development possible within the limits of available land and will create a base for development of a Master Site Plan. Modern skateparks, designed with strong community input and connection to adjacent ame-

nities, herald a new era of facility design that creates appealing landscapes and celebrated public spaces that can be enjoyed by everyone. Integrating the new skateboard facility within the existing park with its central, easy to access location and capacity to host multiple activities and events at one time is ideal and maximizes opportunity for local and regional impact. The Community Task Force is pleased to provide this update on progress and looks forward to an ongoing public consultation and information sharing. There will be new opportunities for public input to the project in Fall 2012. Public participation will play an important role in determining the scope and direction of the project that will ultimately move forward to the construction phase. Current timelines anticipate construction of new facilities to begin in Spring 2013 with completion in July 2013, well in time for gala Centennial celebrations as the Town reaches the significant 100 year mile-

stone. “We will know that we have been successful,” states Christianson, “when we reach the point where stakeholders agree on a concept that positions Centennial Park to be Drumheller’s premier outdoor recreation space and enhances the park as an attraction for local and regional residents as well as visitors to the area.”

About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal reserves

in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Book Columnist

THE CAT’S TABLE by Michael Ondaatje I simply adored this book, and although my book club is not meeting over the summer, I felt compelled to share it. I will urge them to read it this fall, when we reunite. Michael

Ondaatje,

author

of the best seller, “The English Patient,” kept me captivated with his fine, visual writing style. Some of the descriptive pieces make a person stop reading for a moment just to go back and savor them. The story itself is wonderful, set on a ship sailing from Colombo to England in 1954.

The main character is an 11 year old boy travelling alone. He is designated to sit at the lowly “Cat’s Table” which is as far from the Captain’s table as possible. His companions are a diverse group of other “insignificants” who become a major force during these three weeks of his life. Two teenaged boys become his friends who share adventures and trouble-making throughout the journey as they freely roam the ship. They make a vow together to do one forbidden thing each day, so one can only imagine the shenanigans that keep these boys occupied throughout the voyage. As the author puts it so vividly, “they explode like freed mercury

inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

all over the ship.” The boys become very familiar with all areas of the ship, exploring during the dark of night and early morning hours. They become fascinated with the prisoner who is shackled and held captive in the lower confines of the ship. The boys hide in the life boats to spy on him during the nightly exercise he is given once the passengers are all asleep. The eleven year old boy is telling the story, but periodically gives perspective from his adult self as he looks back on how this trip influenced his life. What seemed a small journey at the time, actually became large when

reflecting back on it. The difference between first class and the others on the ship is obvious as the boy networks with this rich collection of personalities. His close observation of these eccentric individuals is what keeps the reader so enchanted. I kept asking myself, “Where on earth did the author come up with some of these characters?” I would recommend this book as a good “Summer Read” - Let yourself slip onto this ship and become one of the passengers, enjoy the journey and long for the voyage to continue on a little longer before coming to an end.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. Sunshine Lodge goes penniless Donella Swan | inSide Drumheller

The very last Canadian penny was minted on May 4, 2012. The Canadian government decided it was time to be rid of the coin as it became obsolete as its manufacturing costs were more than they were worth. It was costing approximately 1.6 cents to produce each penny. Moving with the times, and making the transition easier, Sunshine Lodge & Cottages has decided to be rid of the small change by all residents donating their pennies to Brittney DeLeeuw’s baby fund, a housekeeping and kitchen aid at the Lodge

who will soon be going on maternity leave. “We thought we would take the initiative and it’s going to a good cause. I know sometimes seniors get a bad wrap for paying for things with small change but it’s not just seniors who do that. I think my wife is the worst for that,” said Marcel Augey in a joking manner, activities co-ordinator at Sunshine Lodge. Following a resident meeting, the response to the idea of going peniless was quite positive said Augey. After presenting the facts as to why the penny was being eradicated, he said the majority of residents were on board, especial-

ly when it meant higher stakes for penny bingo. “There will be nickel bingo now instead of penny bingo. That was received very well,” said Augey. The penny will slowly be phased out starting February of 2013, when the mint will stop distributing them to financial institutions. Even though pennies are not being manufactured anymore, they will be accepted in cash transactions as long as people have them, they just won’t be given back in your change. When making change for cash purchases, cashiers will use Swedish rounding, going up or down to the nearest nickel. Electronic transactions will not be affected, they will still be paid to the nearest one cent. “We used to buy lots of candy with pennies. I liked the black licorice pipes and jawbreakers,” said Edith Sulliman, a resident at Sunshine Lodge, reminiscing about the old days.

Canadian penny. All the donated pennies will be going to Brittney DeLeeuw’s baby fund, a housekeeping and kitchen aid at the Lodge who will soon be going on maternity leave. inSide photo by Donella Swan

Fall/winter program in works for Badlands Lacrosse Michael James| inSide Drumheller

Lacrosse teams in Drumheller will soon be hanging up their sticks. The regular season came to a close last weekend and they will be heading to playos today. However, plans are in the works to make the sport a year round aair. The Badlands Lacrosse Association is in the midst of developing a

fall/winter lacrosse program. “Going forward, we’re putting together a fall/winter lacrosse program. We’re still working on the details, but we’re hoping to make lacrosse a year round sport, said Dave Powell, president of the Badlands Lacrosse Association. The goal of the program would be to help promote the sport further, teach how the game is played,

and give kids more chances to have fun with lacrosse. It is hoped that it could encourage more kids to join one of the minor teams in town. “I think once we get a fall/winter program we’ll get some people who have never played and are intimidated to play in minor lacrosse. Hopefully it will entice those kids to come out and play, said Powell. The program is meant to be dropin style and non-competitive. The association is also hoping to work more closely with the valley’s schools. “I was talking to St. Anthony’s and they want to be involved as well. We started a program with them where we donated some actual lacrosse sticks to get their program going,

said Powell. “We’re trying to grow more and work with the schools. The fall/winter program comes after a record breaking year for the number of players who joined lacrosse this season. There was an increase of 25 percent in players, there were more teams, and teams in each division. The association hopes to attract more players at the bantam and midget ages. They are also in need of more volunteers and coaches. “There’s always a need for volunteers and coaches. We’re going to put together a great training program for the coaches, said Powell. Anyone who is interested can call Powell at 403-823-3152 to volunteer.

JULY WINNER The Badlands Lacrosse Association is moving forward with plans to expand with a fall/winter program this year. Turnout this season had increased dramatically

with 25 percent more players and more teams. The fall/winter program will give more kids a chance to try lacrosse in a non-competitive atmosphere.

played in a tournament in Abbotsford upon arriving in Canada, and also played in a fun pickleball event at the West Hillhurst courts in Calgary during the last week of Stampede. It was while grocery shopping in Drumheller where they found a copy of inSide Drumheller and read an article written about pickleball being played at the Badlands Community Facility. “We showed up [on July 19] at the time [written in the article] and had the best time. We made new friends, got some great exercise, and fell in love with the indoor courts because at home we play outside,”

said McKillop. It was a nice surprise said Debi Kennedy, who regularly takes in the game at the BCF. “They were able to give us some pointers, as they have all been playing for awhile,” said Kennedy. McKillop said her and her husband have travelled extensively but were very impressed with their trek to Drumheller. “You can travel and say, golf, but you will probably not have the interaction you do in pickleball. All the high energy exchange and all the new friends you meet is just great. If you’ve not tried it, you must. It’s a blast!” said McKillop.
