The Forseth kids were having a blast at the new Kinsmen playground in Greentree. Top to bottom: Caitlin, 10, Jaydin, age 8, and Raelynn, age 3. Raelynn said her favourite thing is going on the slide. The Kinsmen Club of Drumheller playground project cost $90,000, and received community and business donations and a government grant Kinsmen. Volunteers and town staff worked with the installer to get the playground completed by the end of July.

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution had 60 more days added to his sentence after pleading guilty to assaulting another inmate with a weapon. Jacob Friskie appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on July 25. He pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon. The court heard how on November 1, 2013 at the Drumheller Institution, he was involved in a consensual

fight. After the altercation had effectively ended, Friskie went to his cell and retrieved a jail made stabbing weapon, about 5 inches long, and returned to stab the other person involved in the fight in the forearm. Friskie was serving a three-year sentence at the Drumheller Institution. The Judge agreed with the crown and defense for a 60 day sentence consecutive to what he is currently serving.

An inmate who attempted to assault a corrections officer with a weapon will spend another 60 days behind bars. Steven Collins appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, July 25. He pleaded guilty to assault with a weapon. The court heard how on June 6 of this year, Collins was in his cell when a corrections of-

ficer opened his cell to take him to a medical appointment. Collins grabbed a sharp object and lunged at the officer. He did not make contact, however. Collins was subdued and when his cell was searched, officers found three more prison fashioned weapons. The judge agreed with a joint recommendation from the crown and defense for a consecutive sentence of 60 days.

Court date set for Laughlin trial Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man, charged with manslaughter, will be heading to trial in April of next year. Wade Laughlin was arraigned in Court of Queen’s Bench on Thursday, July 24. He was charged in May of 2011 with manslaughter. The charges come after Austin Neil McMaster succumbed to

his injuries after what was believed be a very serious physical assault. A pedestrian discovered him in the early morning hours of May 2 on a street in Nacmine. Laughlin appeared in Court of Queen’s Bench for his arraignment, representing himself. He elected to have his trial in front of a judge and jury. His trial has been scheduled for April 13-24, 2015. w28eowb

Ohlhauser out boxes competition Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Last weekend Jon Ohlhauser headed to Grande Prairie in shorts and came home with a pretty big belt to hold them up. Ohlhauser won his first belt of his burgeoning boxing career, and with his dedication to the sport, it may not be his last. The matches were part of Grande Prairie’s centennial celebrations. “They were also celebrating 100 years of boxing in their community,” explains Ohlhauser. “Willie De Witt was there, and they had eight fights. I won my weight division at 75 kilograms.” His interest in the sport came later in life and as a result of supporting his daughter Moriah’s career choice. He explains that her goal is to become an RCMP officer and in working toward this, it was recommend she take up a martial arts or combative sport. She chose kickboxing. He wasn’t interested in kickboxing himself, but said he would be interested in boxing for fitness. They found a training gym in Airdrie. That was just over two years ago. “After a month, I thought, I was doing all this work, and I am a goal driven person, I’m already in shape, I want to move from fitness to competition,’” he said. Since then he has trained and climbed through ropes a few

times. The bout in Grande Prairie was his seventh amateur fight, and his second victory.

At 48, fighting at the amateur level, he is often fighting much younger boxers. In fact the Grande Prairie bout was the first time he had fought someone over 25. At the amateur level, he fights under Olympic rules. This means three–three minute rounds. This is more than enough time to wind a boxer to the point of exhaustion. With short matches, there are not many knock outs, but rather lots of strategy. “If you trust your coach, he is

not going to put you in the ring over your head,” said Ohlhauser. “Amateur is about boxing, there may be some 20 year-olds there to impress their girlfriend, but most of the guys in there understand the game is about scoring points, it is not about knockouts.” “It is fast, lots of punching, but not huge power. There is more technique, you have to think about how I am going to set the next shot up.” He is considered novice because he has had less than 10 fights. After that he moves up to the open division. “I like the fact it pushes me, it is a rush to get in the ring. It is just you, and there is no place to hide unless you can get behind the ref,” he laughs. “I’m 48, so at some point I’ll have to put the gloves down, but I don’t feel it. So while I don’t feel it, I might as well see what I can do and go for it.” He is not alone. Last spring he went to the community recreation fair to gauge interest in the sport. This resulted in 48 people approaching him interested in doing boxing, either recreationally or for fitness. “I got all ages, from kids to adults. I am really playing with the idea that this fall I may open up. I have a facility to do it in, it is just a matter of getting it set up,” he said.

Butter two slices of bread per person you are serving. I made the following amount for

three people: Soften 4 ounces of cream cheese (that is one half a block) Mix in 1 tablespoon of icing sugar - or more if you like it sweeter. Spread this on one slice of bread (the un-buttered side) Sprinkle with fresh blueberries. Top with remaining slice of bread. Cook in frying pan, just as you would a grilled cheese sandwich, flipping over until both sides are golden and inside is melted. Serve with more fresh berries on the side.

Who are you? (l-r) Irma, Lucas, and Steve Johns. Career: Retired. Where are you visiting from? Lucas is from Calgary, Alberta, and Irma and Steve are from Christina Lake, British Columbia. The Lake is about three hours away from Kelowna. What brings your family to Drumheller? We’ve been coming here for years, since we’re members of the Dino RV Resort. We just like the area. What do you like the most about Drumheller? The Royal Tyrrell Museum, of course. How long of a drive is it from Chris-

tina Lake? Well, it took us two days but it’s actually only ten hours driving in total. What is on your tour list today? We’re going down to the Hoodoos, visiting Fossil World, and then we’ll finish off with swimming. Lucas loves to swim. Have you been accommodated well? Oh yeah, the locals always treat us really nicely. What’s your favourite dinosaur? Lucas: The Worlds Largest! If we visited Christina Lake, what would you suggest we see? The actual lake itself is beautiful. It’s the warmest tree lined lake in British Columbia.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

Tyrrell expands technology research with 3D software Lauren Main | inSide Drumheller

The Royal Tyrrell Museum has been utilizing new technology to help further the research facility. With the collaboration of Dr. Donald Henderson and student Emma Fowler, the Royal Tyrrell has been able to approach fossil research from a whole new perspective. Through the use of three dimensional (3D) imaging, scanning, and printing, the research team at the Tyrrell can make their new fossil findings come alive on screen. “My interest is scientific. I want to know what this dinosaur looked like when he was alive.” Henderson says. 3D scanning examines a selected specimen and translates the data that is found onto a digital program for 3D imaging. The use of a 3D scan and

image technique opens a variety of different avenues for researchers to explore in order to gain extra insight on a fossil. 3D imaging is especially advantageous when researchers are trying to articulate what the selected dinosaur’s appearance may have been. Dr. Henderson, alongside Fowler and the rest of the team have been working on a specimen for two years. Through 3D imaging, Fowler and Henderson have been able to provide more information on the nicknamed fossil head, “Hellboy.” “The Hellboy fossil has been warped over the years and Dr. Henderson wants the 3D data in order to retrodeform it.” Fowler explains how the image can be shaped and restored to show the fossil’s true appearance. “It’s easy to use this technology, because being able to see the fossil all around, and explore it in reality is not just dangerous for the people, it’s also dangerous for the fossil.” Once the digital data of the scanned fossil has been compiled and organized into a 3D image, Fowler and Henderson are able to manipulate the appearance if the fossil needs reshaping, create a copy of a bone if parts are missing, or send the digital data to a partner museum for them to make a 3D print. A 3D print is able to be created in two ways, with two different techniques.

“There are tons of cool opportunity for 3D scanning and printing, especially because it’s a lot less risky to manufacture items,” Dooley says, “I think as soon as it is cost effective, people will start using it more often.” Each year, the cost of 3D printing is going down, making it easier for researchers like Henderson and Fowler to utilize the equipment.

Through a 3D scan or a computer model, 3D image printing can either be sculpted out of a piece of plastic or built by layering molten plastic with a mechanical arm. Printing a 3D image from a scan is expensive at the moment, yet it creates a whole new alternative for fossil model building. “3D printing is pretty amazing,” Henderson explains, “Right now, we’re only working with plastic, but people are trying for more sustainable materials like metal and ceramics.” Addition of new technologies like 3D printing, scanning, and imaging have aided the Tyrrell, and other paleontologist researchers, a more comprehensive look into a dinosaur’s life. Going forward in the future, Fowler wants to identify ligament attachments and recreate muscles to make a digital, fleshed out model of the dinosaur.

Hey Romeo added to Alan Jackson tour Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A summer tradition is the summer anthem and Hey Romeo has thrown its hat into the ring with its most recently released single. Hey Romeo has been busy and have just released a summer single called Two Hearts and a Radio, with a video to accompany it. It is from

their upcoming album to be released in early September. It has been a summer of announcements for Hey Romeo, including the inclusion of the band on select dates to support country superstars Alan Jackson and Terri Clark on tour this fall. So far, they are slated to open the tour in Winnipeg on September 17, and then in Victoria on

September 22, followed by Kelowna on September 25. More dates are expected. “It was fantastic news to get added to the Alan Jackson tour as he’s had a big influence on country music through the last 25 years with over 30 number one hits,” Rob Shapiro, Drumheller native and keyboard player for the band. “It’s the first time the band will play in hockey arenas on a tour with a headliner this big. It means lots of eyes and ears on the band which is great news. We also heard we’re added to a couple Terri Clark shows as well as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It’s going to be a busy fall!” The band is also on the bill for the Canadian Country Music Awards, which are in Edmonton this year. They are appearing in the Legends show at the Winspear Centre on Friday, September 5. “It should be great fun as the Winspear is a beautiful venue,” said Shapiro. Hey Romeo recently wrapped up in the studio with producer Brad Crisler (Brett Eldredge, Brooks & Dunn) for the band’s next collection of songs to be released as a two part EP, titled “I Got This” and “Stay With Me” through Royalty Records/Sony Music Entertainment Canada in September 2014 and May 2015. “The thought was to give our fans something brand new each year. It’s a sign of the times in my opinion, people’s attention span’s are shorter and want something new and great all the time. The first EP is called I Got This and will be in stores and on iTunes on Tuesday, September 9th,” Shapiro told inSide Drumheller. The band worked on the album in the shadow of greats, both in Nashville and in Alabama. “We recorded much of it in Nashville but also ventured south to a small town called Muscle Shoals, Alabama. It has a very rich musical history and many great acts recorded there like the Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Paul Simon, Carrie Underwood and many more,” Shapiro explained.

Canada Prep Academy is my best opportunity to go pro,” Robinson explains. In order for their students to reach full potential and propel their football careers beyond the high school level, the academy aims for excellence in both athletics and academics. The AJHL has finalized its 2014-2015 schedule and in less than three weeks, the Drumheller Dragons will be on the ice for exhibition play. The preseason begins Wednesday, August 20 and on that day, the Dragons will be in Brooks to take on south conference rival the Bandits. The Dragons’ preseason home opener

Their mission statement states, “Canada Prep Academy provides a setting that closely resembles that of a university, ensuring that our students are prepared to balance the lifestyle of a studentathlete at the next level, whether that is NCAA or CIS. Furthermore, we strive to prepare our student-athletes to not only get into university, but to have the skills necessary to balance sport and academics.” Robinson will be flying to Ontario August 16, in time for the team’s first practice on August 18.
