Tyrrell could see boost of Chinese travellers Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Thomas Chapin, 9

“Yes, it will be fun to be in Grade 4, I hear they get to use computers a lot.”

Hannah Mepham, 10

“Yeah, because I like phys. ed. and recess... and science too.”

The Tyrrell and other attractions could see a boost of tourists from China now that the Chinese government has granted Canada an Approved Destination Status.

Recent actions by the Chinese government may have benefits to the valley in attracting more visitors in the future.

“Over the last decade we have seen a major increase of visitation from China.” Andrew Neuman

The Chinese Government has given Canada an Approved Destination Status. This allows for the first time for Chinese citizens to travel to Canada with tourist Visas. Previously any visitation to Canada had to be done through special visas for business or student visas, for example. This week the first group of tourist from China arrived in Canada. The change also allows Canada to advertise as a tourism destination in China, and Travel Alberta has started a marketing campaign of promoting Calgary, Banff, Edmonton and Jasper as tourism destinations. Andrew Neuman, director of the Royal Tyrrell Museum said the changes have the potential of increasing

visitation to the valley from China, a country that the Tyrrell has forged a strong relationship. “Over the last decade we have seen a major increase of visitation from China,” said Neuman. “When I first started working here our major visitors from Asia was from Japan, and while we still get pretty good Japanese visitation, both China and Korea has equalled or surpassed Japanese visitation. It is certainly a very interesting market for us, I am aware that there are lots

of you Chinese travelling in North America.” The gift shop carries products that are in a Chinese language. “It’s certainly a market that is growing and it is great to hear the Chinese government is encouraging that,” he said. Neuman said the museum’s relationship with China goes back to the mid-to late 1980s. “A lot our staff have gone back and forth ever since,” said Neuman. “We just had a contingent here last

weekend from Henan Province. There is a group there building a large fossil museum, and they are looking at potential relationships.” He estimates that international visitation accounts for about 20 per cent of its visitation, including the United States. According to a conference Board of Canada Survey, the new status is expected to boost the yearly rate of travel from China up as much as 50 per cent by the year 2015.

Big Red nestles down Workers from Dan’s Oilfield helped move “Big Red” into her new home early Tuesday morning at the reclaimed site next to the ATCO offices on South Railway avenue. Many readers had wondered about her whereabouts since she left the downtown location earlier this summer to make way for parking changes. According to spokesman Mike Todor, the ongoing efforts to improve the location are the results of a cooperative effort by Downtown Drumheller, Drumheller Institution, and several private businesses. Bertamini will not seek re-election Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

After 24 years of public service as an elected official, Karen Ann Bertamini is making the hardest decision of her lifetime and is going to bow out of the next municipal election. Bertamini has served Drumheller Town council for seven terms, and previously served as a School Board Trustee. She made the announcement to Town of Drumheller staff this week before going public with her announcement. “It is a very hard decision to make, I feel I have been blessed to have been able to represent

this community municipally, federally and provincially,” she told inSide Drumheller. Bertamini is a native Drumhellerite and has approached her office with zeal. She served on numerous boards. One of her main focuses has been on affordable housing and she played a big role in successfully lobbying for funding to build the new affordable housing complex in Drumheller that came into service in 2009. “This community has really grown in the last five years. We have so many things to be proud of,” she said. “The development of the community facility; I

think it is going to open up a lot of doors for this community,, for residents, visitors and surrounding areas. I can only see great things coming out of that.” She adds the development of the community facility will allow town hall to move back downtown and be accessible to the whole community. During her tenure she also was active with the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association and currently serves as a board member. She has been involved in various committees including the Provincial Task Force for Affordable Housing and Social Infrastructure, Environment

and Sustainability Committee, and the Community Infrastructure Standing Committee. She hopes to remain involved in the community through committee work and boards. She adds it an opportune time to leave office. “We have great administration, very knowledgeable. Our staff is willing to go the extra mile when it is needed,” she said. “There is some consistency at the table (on Council) and there is going to be some new faces, so it is going to be okay,” she said.

A sharp eyed City of Edmonton worker halted the construction of a sewage tunnel earlier this week when he spotted what he thought might be a dinosaur bone. The city contacted Jack Brink, Curator of Archaeology

at the Royal Alberta Museum, who brought Mike Burns, a Ph.D. student in palaeontology from the University of Alberta, to investigate the find. Burns determined that the bones, located in west Edmonton, are

a very well-preserved tooth of a tyrannosaurid (likely Albertosaurus) and large limb bone elements possibly from the hadrosaur Edmontosaurus. Venturing 30-metres underground to the source, Burns and Brink discovered more dinosaur bones, including a vertebra and a femur. The Royal Tyrrell Museum confirmed that the find is significant. “We will work with the U of A palaeontologists to ensure there is someone on site as the

material is uncovered, so the fossils are preserved without causing any project delays for the city.” says Andrew Neuman, Executive Director of the Royal Tyrrell Museum. “The City of Edmonton should be commended for doing the right thing – this is a great example of how we can all work together to preserve Alberta’s heritage”. The bones will be excavated over the next few days and then will be transported to the Royal Tyrrell Museum for further study.

inSideENTERTAINMENT Hey Romeo finding success 4 - Friday, August 27, 2010

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller It has been a whirlwind summer for Hey Romeo; from the stages of a music festival in France, to toughing out life on

the road with mishaps and breakdowns. Along the way, they have kept rising in the charts, and forging ahead as a band. The trio that includes Stacie

Roper, Darren Gusnowsky and Rob Shapiro of Drumheller are playing the Stampede Barn as part of the Richard Cosgrave Memorial Badlands Dinosaur Derby on Friday night. They will be taking the stage, bringing on a wealth of experience and accomplishments in just a few short months. Last time inSide Drumheller caught up with Hey Romeo the band broke through the Top 20 with their single Searchin’ for You and had released their first major CD entitled That’s What I Am. Today the title single from the album is in the mid 30s in the charts and just this week they released a video for the track. In its first day, it received more than 1,000 hits on their website, and the video is in medium rotation on CMT. The momentum of the summer started in June with a tour of Western Canada to promote the new album. They then headed overseas to Tours France, to play the Country Bike Festival. The festival made a concerted effort to bring in Canadian Country Music and the band shared the bill with Duane Steel. “It was remarkable. It was like a motorcycle festival crossed with country music, kind of like a Sturgis for country music,” said Rob Shapiro loading up in Jasper, on their way to Canmore last Thursday, and then Drumheller tonight. “We had the most successful night ever for merchandise sales (in France). They really embraced Canadian country music. They even had line dances made

up for our songs!” The band came back to Canada and continued to play live. They played the Stampede and the Yorkton Summer Fair as well as smaller venues. They just came off a threeweek tour in Ontario. On the bright side, they were able to network. “We’re pretty regional, so we had to get out to Ontario to meet people on radio, CMT and all of that, it was pretty awesome,” said Shapiro. On the down side, vandals smashed the windows out of the van, and they were plagued by breakdowns.

Along the way, their music is being recognized. They received their second CCMA nomination as band of the year. Shapiro received his second nomination for keyboard player of the year, and Gusnowsky received a nomination for guitarist of the year. They are also up for website of the year. They are looking forward to playing Drumheller. Last time they were on stage in the Valley was the 2009 Canada Day celebrations. “We’re excited to be back and have a lot of new songs and a little success with radio,” said Shapiro.

Idyllic, bucolic, pastoral. All of these could be applied to the place I spent last Sunday afternoon. At least I could apply them all. The fellow who owns the place might not be so generous, as he and his wife must work very hard to maintain it. It was a farm that I visited, and the house sits up on a hill that affords a view that I have never seen before. The fields seem to go on forever and to the east you could see Saskatchewan, if the horizon didn’t fall away first. The yard is lovely, with all kinds of flowers and decorative bushes. There is a stone retaining wall, halfway along which runs a waterfall, one that puts me in mind of one I know of in BC. It all seemed so idyllic. Then the farmer hit me with a great idea, let’s build a corral for the horses. Ah, hard work. It you ever want to be brought around to the reality of farm life, nothing like a little hard work to do it. The house, the yard and the views are all very nice, but you soon realize that these things are acquired through sweat, hardwork and brains, they don’t just happen. When farmers work, they work hard, and even when they don’t work especially hard, they still work or they go to Phoenix. Still, they must like the work, they keep doing it. A good thing for us all.

Russian bombers cross into Canadian air space without prior notice or permission. Canadian F-18 fighters are scrambled to go up and meet them, and escort back the way they came, or shoot them down should they resist. There is no resistance, and the bombers are escorted out of Canadian territory. Last week a ship carrying refugees from Sri Lanka sailed into Canadian territorial waters off the West Coast. No jets were scrambled, no Coast Guard ships set sail. This is unfortunate because this ship should never have been allowed to enter Canadian waters, it should have been turned back. There apparently was prior knowledge that this ship was coming, but those associated with it never sought permission, nor gave notification of its intentions before it entered our waters. That being so, this ship should have been turned away. Instead, it was escorted into a West Coast harbour where its occupants disembarked, some taken to hospital, most sent to detention centers to await “processing”. In the meantime, just because they have landed on Canadian soil, they will be accorded all the rights of a Canadian under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, get medical care, three meals a day and a warm dry place to sleep. All this while there are people in Vancouver living on the streets because they can’t afford a warm, dry place to sleep, or three meals a day. The people aboard this ship are apparently the victims of organized crime, specializing in human trafficking. The criminals demand anywhere from 20 to 40 thousand dollars per person. A poor refugee from a Third World country with 40 thousand dollars? Correct that. 400 refugees from a Third World country with dollars, each. And we are told there are two more boatloads on the way. It seems that anyone who has, or does write something regarding these refugees, always makes some apology for doing so, or claims to have no prejudice toward anyone. I am not going to do that, because something like this is breaking the law, and abusing the system, and I don’t like it. What of the poor legitimate refugee trying to get into the country through proper channels? Stand in line and wait for something you really want, and just as you are about to move forward, half a dozen others are ushered in before you. You don’t feel prejudice, you feel wronged, and righty so. 34m

Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, sneaking around behind someone's back is a recipe for trouble. If you are thinking of doing something underhanded, it's probably a good idea to reconsider.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, bury the hatchet and make up with the person with whom you have had an ongoing strained relationship. As you get older you will find old wounds heal quicker.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you're in a domestic mood this week and could find yourself spending more time than normal in the kitchen. Experiment with all types of recipes.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 It's time to take the plunge, Aquarius. Instead of being shy about making a big purchase, you simply have to get it done already. Others will support your efforts.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, give it your best shot because that's all you can do this week, when the deck seems to be stacked against you. You may find that Lady Luck is on your side.

Race Against Hunger at chucks this weekend

Local outrider on top of game going into Dino Derby

Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

The summer months are a slow time for food banks trying to stock the shelves for the upcoming winter. When making their way to the Richard Cosgrave Memorial Dinosaur Derby this weekend, make sure to bring food donations to help fill Encana’s natural gas-powered Race Against Hunger “truckwagon”. The truckwagon will be outside the entrance to the Stampede Grounds, accepting non-perishable food donations to help stock the Drumheller Salvation Army foodbank walls. To date, the Race Against Hunger has raised more than $21,000 and 2,800 lbs of food in support of food banks in the Grande Prairie, Drumheller, Ponoka and Calgary regions. The Race Against Hunger effort is a program presented by Encana and partnered with the WPCA.

Logan James is right on track in the fourth year of his career as an outrider. James, son of Tyler and Val James will be charging through the half mile of hell this weekend riding in the Richard Cosgrave memorial Dinosaur Derby, a stop on the WPCA Dodge Pro tour. “It’s been a good year,” he said. “I’ve been riding for quite a few guys and been riding well, I feel.” This was the second season he appeared at the Calgary Stampede. This year he had about four or five rides. He has earned the respect of drivers and has become a regular on a few teams. This weekend he expects to ride for Obrey Motowylo, Cliff Cunningham, Barry Hodgson and Jordie Fike. He may pick up other rides. He likes performing in Drumheller. “It's pretty exciting to run in front of your family and friends at your home,” he said. Logan intends to keep up
