Ty Black, 1, and his mother Taryn enjoyed a sunny Thursday afternoon at ParticiPark on the swing set, a perfect summer activity. It’s a gambler’s game to predict the weather in Alberta, but it appears the sun will continue for the next few days allowing residents and visitors to enjoy all the valley has to offer.

Yavis celebrates 93 years of family business Pascale Taylor| inSide Drumheller

The Yavis Family Restaurant first opened in Hanna in 1917 and will be celebrating its 93rd year on Saturday. “We certainly had ups and downs during my 30 years. Every time a new restaurant opens up or the oil industry drops." Mike Yavis Since that time, it has moved to several locations, Gus’s Corner, The Waldorf, The White House Hotel among others, and it has been at its current location for 30 years, the longest time at one location said manager Mike Yavis. First opened by Mike’s grandfather, Gus, the business passed down to Mike’s parents, Rollie and Jean, before Mike took it over in the '80s. Adapting with the times and changes in law, they originally started as a tiny lounge bar. “We started with a 30 foot lounge which was all you were allowed when you opened up and now it’s 130 feet,” explained manager Mike Yavis. Mike says it has lived through many ups and

lenges, adding, “When farmers have a bad year, we have a bad long winter!” But he says things have changed with all the money around, especially with the opening of the Tyrrell Museum in 1985. “It brought a whole bunch of new business,” he says. Mike attributes the restaurant’s success to a simple model: “Our main model, for my parents and myself, is very simple; quality food at a good price and friendly service. If you have good service, good food and it is reasonably priced, you are going to be open forever and that’s exactly what has been passed down from my grandfather to my father to myself and now to my daughters, Amy, Alyssa and Sara, who work here.” The good news, Mike told inSide Drumheller, is that they are about to renew the lease on its current location for another five years…not long now before will be celebrating Yavis’s centennial!

Water discolouration that Drumheller residents and businesses may have experienced recently has the town puzzled as to its origin. Kendrick said the problem appears to be intermittent and a few businesses along the main line seem to have experienced the problem. He confirmed the water is safe to drink, adding that they have re-sampled everything along the line. If people experience discolouration, he recommends running the tap for five or ten minutes and it should run clear again.

While vacationing in Drumheller, Jacqueline Dery, 10, and her brother, Ethan, 6, of Calgary and their cousin Maya from Toronto set up a lemonade stand at the Dinosaur RV Park on July 26. Wanting to help sick children, Ethan suggested giving the money they raised to the hospital. They sold lemonade at 25 cents a glass and were able to donate $11 to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation for the hos-

pital’s greatest need. The Drumheller Area Health Foundation was grateful to the children for taking time out during their holiday to give to others. Next week, the kids are back in Drumheller, where they have a trailer, and they hope to do more fundraising for the hospital. Russell Brothers etch new CD Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller act which made it into the top 14 of 400 at the Calgary Stampede Youth Search has a new album out to accompany it's success. “It’s mostly about love, girls... the daily joys in life.” Matt Russell

The valley’s Russell Brothers launched their CD last month, July 11, and have big hopes of getting into the business. Alex, 18, and Matt, 16, form the two man group. Alex, left and Matt Russell have released their CD All I Know, recorded in Bryan Adams’ studio in Vancouver. In the past year the band has being working on their promotion: finishing their demo (recorded in musician Bryan Adam’s studio in Vancouver), doing photoops, and working on their website (www.russellbrothersmusic.com). The business end of the industry doesn’t take backseat to creating good music. “We’d love for it to be a bit of both, but it’s nice to get paid,” says Matt. Currently, they are booked weekly at Waves Coffee House in Calgary. They perform every Thursday in the month of August. In case it doesn’t work out, Matt plans on pursuing studies in engineering, and Alex wants his private pilot's license. Their music can be listened to on their website, and demo orders can be made there as well.

but always welcome by C. Aiello

Well here it is, July has passed and what have you accomplished? Yes, the lawn is lush and green, but really, what did you have to do with it? I mean the rain has fallen every day or night since May, and we all know you’re wondering which way to go on your vacation, east or west. Those of us with passports and American dollars may go south, but how many of us have seen our own country? Personally, I usually go west, southwest really, to the Crow’s Nest Pass area. This may change. More and more often I have heard good things about that vast emptiness that lies to the east. I speak of Saskatchewan and I hear that it is not the vast emptiness that I envision, but rather a land rich in culture (agriculture), skies that never end (no pesky hills or mountains to get in the way), sunsets worthy of a C.M. Russell painting, and in the north, woods and lakes a plenty. I am going only by word of mouth, as I have never been east of the Alberta border. I believe that it is time to venture forth, to see what I can see; to see the province that has spawned the Roughriders and Rider Pride. Over the last few weeks I have been rousing myself at around 7:00 or 7:30, rolling out of bed, thanking the Lord for a good night’s sleep, pulling on shorts and a sweatshirt, and going for a walk. I have met a few people out doing the walking and they find the same thing, that these early hours are the best time of the day. The air is fresh and still, the sun glints blindingly off the river, and things are quiet. I could kick myself for waiting so long to start doing this type of thing. I have wasted time, and life is too short, even if you live to be 100. To compensate I suppose, I have started to take evening walks. The conditions are almost a mirror image of the mornings, that is, the sun is going down instead of coming up. The better thing with the evening is the sunsets. Sometimes they are so magnificent that I hate to turn away, for what I might miss. The only place where I have seen their colors and brilliance replicated is again, in Russell paintings. I don’t have words for them, they must be seen. Perhaps that is why the evening and early dusk are so quiet, the sunset has instilled an awe, a stillness that dare not be broken by the spoken word. Someone stop me before I become emotional. Monday is the beginning of August. If it passes as quickly as did July, then we will be into a municipal election before we know it. People know that it is coming, and some of them can’t wait. The complaints, the mistrust, frustration, and downright anger that is heard about the current town council, mayor and administration seems almost universal, and at times overwhelming. For all of it, however, they are few and very far between who show any interest in letting their name stand for election. Perhaps therein lies the reason. You get elected to Town council and you may no longer complain about its actions, because you have become the very thing about which others may complain. The complaints may not only be about you, but you have given the right for people to complain at you, or to you. You have entered the ranks of one of the most reviled, most joked about profession, right up there with used car dealers, lawyers, and these days, bankers. You are, like it or not, a politician. Welcome to the world. The foregoing was not meant as a deterrent, but as a caution. Don’t let what you have chosen to do, make you; instead, make what you have chosen. Don’t lose yourself; don’t sell yourself. 31m

Relaunch Vespa bringing Italian air to the valley This metallic smoky grey, all pressed steel, 2005 Vespa PX150 is a limited edition, number 131 of 350 in Canada, made in Pontedera, Italy by Piaggo. It is a relaunch of the Vespa PX and was purchased in Calgary by Sandra Mills. It has a 150 cc, 2 stroke single cylinder engine with manual four speed and new technology such as electronic CDI ignition and hydraulic front disk brake. The owner’s first vehicles in the '80s being Italian scooters, she bought the relaunch Vespa as it looked just like her old one as a Christmas present to herself in 2006 and thought it’d be ideal for a small town. A fun ride, said owner Sandra Mills, unfortunately she hasn’t had much opportunity to ride it, hence its low mileage at just over 400 km.

Former Morrin resident to run marathon in San Francisco

Dragons hockey school marks new season Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Another season with the Dragons is upon Drumheller, with their hockey school getting the ball rolling later this month. The school is aimed at getting kids involved with not only hockey, but other activities that build camaraderie and sportsmanship. It starts August 16, and pre registration is preferred. Players volunteer their time to coach the event and interact with the kids. “They (Dragons) love to work with the community,” says head coach Dan Price. He says it not only helps the kids who attend, but it gives the players a chance to “get

back to basics”; teaching the game helps reinforce their knowledge and understanding. Normally held in July, it was moved back to mid-August to better fit the players' schedule. “There is more than the onice aspect of the camp, there are outdoor activities. Having the players doing this adds value to the kids, getting them to learn with people they may see as role models,” says Price. “The guys love it, working with kids is innately rewarding.” The school runs from August 16 to 20, and hopefuls can register at the Dragons' office near the bottle depot, or by calling 403-823-3207.

she decided to run a half marathon this year just as a challenge. She came across an email from the Running Room about the event and decided to go for it. There were options to walk or run a half or full marathon. “I decided it was best to go big or go home,” she explains about selecting to run the marathon, adding “the physical and mental stress that will come along with training is nothing compared to what cancer victims and their families endure.” Dodd has never entered a race before, so in preparation, she has entered several ones before the event, such as the 10 k Calgary Women's Run on August 10 and the Canmore half marathon in the CAUSE race on September, 12. Her team also runs every Saturday morning, as well as Wednesday evenings, and Dodd adds a further two or three runs a week on her own to the training schedule. The vision of LLSC is that by 2015 the great majority of people who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer will be cured or they will manage their illness with a good quality of life. They want patients to access the most effective treatments and care from diagnosis through survivorship. In five years patients, their families and caregivers will have the support they need to

inSideSPORTS Registrations for first annual Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon looking promising 14 - Friday, August 6, 2010

Registrations for the first annual

Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon have exceeded expectations according to Colin Kloot, co-organizer of the event. Kloot told inSide Drumheller that on Tuesday, August 4 there were 128 people registered to run the half marathon, 19 to walk it and 45 entered for the 5k fun run/ walk. A high percentage of registrations are coming from females and the highest percentage of age group to run the marathon is from 29 to 38 years old. Kloot said he had hoped reg-

istrations from runners would reach at least 100 so he is very happy with the numbers so far. “There is still time to register by logging on to the website, www.dinosaurhalf.com, and registrations will be accepted up to the morning of the race, on September 12.” Colin Kloot Profits from the event are going towards to the Badlands Community Facility. He also highlighted that they have extended the deadline for tshirts to August 10 so people reg-

istering for the half marathon up to that date are still guaranteed a t-shirt. It seems the Dinosaur Valley Half Marathon is getting a lot of interest from outside the valley too, as a high percentage of the registrations come from people based in Calgary and as far as Edmonton, which is good news considering that there are other races taking place around the province on the same day. Kloot said there is still time to register by logging on to their website, www.dinosaurhalf.com, and they will be accepting registrations up to the morning of the race, on September 12.

Organizers are still in need of more volunteers Kloot said, so anyone wanting to help with this event should log on to the website where they will find a list of tasks volunteers are needed for.w

Kidney golf tourney raises $10,000 Kyle Smylie | inSide Drumheller

Daylen Ostapowich was tickled with the response of his first annual golf tournament last Friday at Drumheller’s course.

QUOTE

Daylen Ostapowich almost putts one in at the fundraising tournament in his name last Friday. Over $10,000 was raised towards establishing a chair of nephrology at the University of Calgary. This was the Daylen Ostapowich Kidney Research Fund’s first event, and won’t be the last, says his mother.

“It went extremely well, much better than expected” Theresa Ostapowich

The fundraiser for nephrology, a kidney disorder Daylen, 7, suffers with, raised over $10,000 towards the fund set up in his namesake. With the goal to establish a chair of nephrology at the University of Calgary, the success of this first event is a good sign

for Daylen and his mother Theresa. “It went extremely well, much better than expected,” says Theresa, adding the silent auction for unique items like a gameused glove from golfer Mike Weir, raised $5,000. Dr. Julian Midgley, a pediatric nephrologist and also Daylen’s doctor, along with Boston Bruins player and Drumheller native Tyler Stahl, joined him on the green. With 43 other golfers who came out to the tournament fundraiser, Theresa said Daylen shot very well. All proceeds from the tourney go straight into creating a chair of ne-

phrology, which essential means that research would begin at the U of C. “This will be ongoing, absolutely,” Theresa said. “We are very humbled.”

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Slow down and take in the scenery, Taurus. You've been missing out on quite a bit by hustling all the time. You meet up with a friend on Tuesday.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, someone questions your authority this week and you don't have the strength to get into an argument about it. Instead, pay no attention and go about your business.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, a tricky situation arises and you have to weigh all your options before making a decision. Put all of your thoughts on paper to make things more coherent.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 You feel backed against a wall, Aquarius, and rightly so. Instead of worrying about every little thing, check out the bigger picture. You could be surprised by the results.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, when others turn to you for advice you really don't know what to say. While you enjoy being friendly and outgoing, you don't want to hinder relationships with the wrong advice.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, take the time to get to know a new neighbor. This person could be that close friend you have been seeking.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Speak your mind, Leo. Others are just waiting to hear what you have to say. When it comes between choosing a friend or a family member, go with family.

Sudoku Solution

brow means:

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, control will be difficult to garner this week, so avoid starting any important projects. Better to leave them for when you are in the driver's seat. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, someone is going to come to your rescue. You just don't know who this person will be just yet. Keep an eye out for your guardian angel. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 It seems like you don't have much luck lately, Scorpio. It could take a while for things to turn around for the better. Hang on and be patient for a little while longer.
