Contractors are back on site along Michichi Creek this week to continue a remediation project to the banks of the creek, which runs behind residential properties on 9th Street Northwest. The project began this spring but when the ground thawed and the creek began to run, it had to be put off until freeze up. The crew expects to be finished this week.

St. Anthony’s track approved by board Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It looks like the valley will have a track and field facility in the near future for students and residents to train and compete. St. Anthony’s School has received word that Christ the Redeemer School Division will be going forward with an assessment, with the goal of building a football and soccer field with a running track and track and dield facilities in the coming year. Christ the Redeemer School Division Trustee for Drumheller, Mark Chung, said the Board has budgeted for the track and will be evaluat-

ing the site in the spring to see what is needed. The goal is to have the fields in this year. “It is an exciting step forward for the school,” said Chung. The track will be built on the west side of the school. St. Anthony’s Principal JoAnne Akerboom is also excited with the development. She says the school will be meeting with the board office to look at design and features. She is grateful for the commitment from the board to move forward with the project, especially in light of the challenges the division has faced this spring with flooding at some of the

division’s schools. “It is a significant expenditure for the board and we are very fortunate,” said Akerboom. “We will have something the students will be able to use this year.”

She sees this as a benefit, not only to St. Anthony’s School students, but to the community at large. Currently DVSS has a shale track, and often it is shared during track and field season by

both schools. The new track will allow the school to host interscholastic events and tournaments, which could benefit Drumheller.

The Drumheller Lions are helping the Drumheller Health Foundation purchase much needed baby monitors with a donation of $1,000 on Friday, December 6. The Health Foundation is looking at purchasing two new wireless monitors, which would allow mom’s to walk around within the hospital and still have their baby’s vitals monitored remotely. The units cost roughly $30,000 each and the Health Foundation is close to purchasing the first. “We are very sympathetic to the family, it is very difficult for all involved,” he said. Police are continuing to investigate and the medial examiner has been called. Police will not be releasing any names.

Checkstop yields marijuana bust submitted | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller RCMP have made another big drug bust in town. On December 7, at 8:55 p.m., RCMP stopped a vehicle at a checkstop. The officer detected a strong smell of marijuana

Benci with possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime. Benci was released from custody on cash bail and is scheduled to appear in Drumheller Provincial Court on Friday, December 13.

DEVELOPMENT PERMITS

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW?????

Take notice that the following development permits for the proposed uses listed below have been issued in accordance with Land Use Bylaw 10-08 of the Town of Drumheller.

Did you know that if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors in the winter that he or she may need more food than during the summer? We know that a lot of dogs like to be outdoors to play in the winter but because of the cold they need more food to maintain good health. If your dog is a dog suited to be outdoors and not likely to suffer because of the cold it will need more to eat. Some dogs want to be outside but are not physically suited to longer exposure because of their lack of insulating fur, being prone to getting frozen feet or general physical makeup. In addition an outdoor dog will need water available, shelter from the wind, snow and rain and an insulating bed to lay on. When the temperature plummets however all dogs should be brought indoors. It just makes sense to protect your good friend as best as you can. If anyone would like further information or discuss any of the topics above please call Greg Peters of bylaw at town hall 823-1363. Thanks.

The Town of Drumheller has vacancies on the following Boards: Drumheller Public Library (1 vacancy) and Municipal Planning Commission (1 vacancy), Drumheller Housing Administration – 1 vacancies and Policing Committee – 3 vacancies. Please contact Linda Handy 403-823-1339 if you are interested in serving in this capacity.

???DID YOU KNOW??? A person can only park a vehicle for 72 hours on a town street. Commercial vehicles can only park to load and unload contents as they service a household they cannot remain parked for extended periods of time. A trailer cannot remain on a town street if it is unattached from a motor vehicle. Also in the winter time as we endure significant snow accumulation please be considerate when parking on a street that you do not obstruct the passage of other vehicles or park in such a manner that you obstruct another driver’s vision of the street or an intersection. Snow on the roads can make it difficult to drive and navigate so please slow down. The same rules of the road apply in bad weather as well as good weather. Every driver must stop at all stop signs and give yourself sufficient space between moving motor vehicles so that you can stop unexpectedly regardless of how slippery the roads are. Please be aware of your limitations and your vehicle’s limitations when driving during winter weather. Get you and your family home safe!

Please call Greg at 403-823-1363 for more information. MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM TOWN HALL! Please pick up a free copy of your Christmas Song Guide printed by the Drumheller Mail here and enjoy your time of caroling this season.

$2.9 billion. Efforts to foster and promote a culture of giving contribute to sustaining a higher quality of life for hard-working Canadians. If you are thinking of making a charitable donation for the first time, our government is giving you an extra reason to donate generously. As part of Economic Action Plan 2013, our government introduced a new, temporary, first-time donor’s ‘super credit’, to encourage Canadians to take that first step to donate and support charitable endeavours in their communities. Monetary donations made by first-time donors after March 20, 2013, and before December 31, 2017, now qualify for the first-time donor’s super credit. Individuals qualify as first-time donors if neither they nor their spouse or common-law partner has claimed the charitable donation tax credit since 2007. The new incentive provides an extra 25% credit when claiming the charitable donation tax credit. This means a 40% federal credit for donations of $200 or less, and a 54% federal credit for the portion of donations that are over $200, up to $1,000. This is in addition to provincial and territorial tax credits. `Whether you can give a small or large amount, your charity is appreciated by those less fortunate. Thank you for all that you do in our Crowfoot Riding during the Christmas season and throughout the year. `More information about the first-time donor’s super credit is available at http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/ fdsc/. Before you give, remember to also donate wisely by researching charities at http://www. cra.gc.ca/donors. HAPPENINGS Canadian Badlands Passion Play looks ahead to 2014 season Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Big things are in store for the Canadian Badlands Passion Play in 2014. The play has certainly had a number of big projects over the past several years, including the forum and expanding the main stage, but next year might be their biggest in recent years. Starting next summer, the Passion Play is increasing its performance schedule to include three weekends in July. “As far as getting all the volunteers and summer school in order, it’s a big project,” said Passion Play executive director Vance Neudorf. “With the ALTO Award and the American Bus Association Award, we think it’s the right year to

do this.” The decision was made as attendance continues to grow. To accommodate more visitors, making the move to three weekends was a natural step explained Neudorf. “The weekends fill up and we’ve always tried to open up more weekday dates. Those aren’t what people are looking for. They want the Saturday and Sunday shows. You have to find dates that work for people,” said Neudorf. To make it happen, the Passion Play first had to make sure the volunteers were on board. “We surveyed our volunteers and they are gung ho about it. Some won’t be able to make all three weekends, but are still committed. We could never go ahead without them,”

are WHO you? Jeannie Lutz Age: 42. Occupation: FCSS Coordinator at the Town of Drumheller. What do you like most about your job? I like that I can be as creative as I want, and working with people. How long have you been there? I have been with the Town of Drumheller for just over a year. Where are you from originally? Nova Scotia, but I have been in Alberta for 20 years. Where is the coolest place you have been? Disneyland, actually I am going to Disneyworld in two weeks! Any travel destinations on your bucket list? Machu Picchu. What are some of your hobbies? My dream is to be a moti-

vational speaker so I love to inspire people. I also love reading and working on personal development. If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three Items would you bring? The Bible, something to make fire and some clothes to wear. If I had a million dollars…? I would like to travel to different locations and inspire people and then give money to people in need where I am visiting. At a rock concert are you on stage, in the crowd or working as a roadie? I would love to say on stage. Any words of wisdom? Do what you need to do, I always say that to my kids!

teers. “Our experiment with the big tent this year was a huge success. As we start looking down the road, we thought we should bite the bullet and build Solomon’s Porch. It’s basically a shade structure with no walls,” said Neudorf. “It could be used for so much. We could rehearse in it if the weather goes bad or we could rent it out for weddings for example.” Tent rentals, explained Neudorf could be over $12,000 per year. A new building would cost roughly $200,000. January will also mark the beginning of writing the new script. The process takes two years and will focus on the Gospel of Luke. “We are starting to write the script in January. It’s a two year process and we’ve hired Barrett Hileman, our lead director. The hallmark of Luke is he starts right from the beginning. There are significant differences and it’ll be a great play,” said Neudorf. The Passion Play continues to grow and so far it looks as though 2014 will be no exception. “We’re going to eventually have to look at how

we can keep things moving forward and stay on an even keel. We’re taking on a lot of big projects and as long as we have people behind us and supporting us, we can keep moving,” said Neudorf. Tickets are already on sale for the 2014 Passion Play.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Bullying. That’s not the Alberta way. 13122SA0

Premier Alison Redford

Stop Bill 46 In 1977, Premier Peter Lougheed promised that in all future contract negotiations, provincial employees would have the right to binding arbitration in lieu of the right to strike. Now, Premier Alison Redford has rammed through Bill 46, which goes back on that promise and takes the right to arbitration away from 22,000 front-line government employees. Redford’s Bill 46 gives government the power to freeze wages, with no independent arbitrator determining what is fair and justified. That’s not negotiating, that’s bullying. And bullying is not the Alberta way. The Alberta way has always been to keep your promises and respect the rights of others.

DRUMHELLER

Now that volleyball season has passed and football is over for the season, Drumheller students are gearing up for another exciting year of basketball. This year, senior high girls from St. Anthony’s have joined their peers at Drumheller Valley Secondary School to form this year’s Dynos. The team will be competing at the junior level, as there are no Grade 12 students on the tam. The team began practice three weeks ago. “It’s been a progression. We’re working on reďŹ ning the girls’ skills and getting them up to where they need to be. During practice we’ve been working very hard,â€? said coach Jennifer Raugust. “It’s about getting back into the groove and ďŹ guring out how to work with each other.â€? The team had their ďŹ rst games this weekend for their annual home tournament. “Well, we weren’t super successful as far as what was on the score sheet. However, my girls had a great weekend and I feel it was very successful as far as improvement goes. They were working really hard and very well together. The team has a long way to go but I am feeling optimistic,â€? said Raugust. This year is a rebuilding year for the team. Last year, ďŹ ve of the six players on the Dynos graduated. Now the team has a roster of three Grade 11 students and a few Grade 10 students. “The positive thing is we’ll be good in the future and get along. They’ll become a really tight-knit group,â€? said Raugust.

The Saints hosted Delia last Thursday and came out slow. Delia jumped into the lead, and were looking strong. One of Delia’s top players ran into foul trouble. This prompted the Saints to clamp down on defense and put on their full court man to man press. This yielded a 16-point run and brought the Saints back into the game. They won 42-30. “It was our ďŹ rst game of the season and we had only practiced for 10 days,â€? said head coach Gavin Makse. “We got better with every quarter, that is what I was happy with, everyone got court time and improved.â€? This was a good sign for the young junior high team with only two Grade 9 players on the roster. “We take each day as it comes, I will tell them I want them to be better after every practice,â€? said Makse. The Saints junior high boys and girls teams are hosting their home tournament this weekend. They have invited teams from Drumheller Delia, Stettler, Trochu and BrownďŹ eld to the round robin tourney. The boys ďŹ rst game is Friday at 11:30 a.m., versus Delia, and the girls take on DVSS at 12:45 p.m. The tournament runs Friday and Saturday.
