Lottomax winner has Drumheller roots O.R. Sheddy | inSide Drumheller

The winner of the $40 million dollar lottery last May, is a Drumheller native. 64 year-old Tom Crist recently came forward to claim the windfall, and in a story in the Calgary Herald, said he was going to donate the money to charity. Tom, who recently retired and sold his company EECOL Electric, according to the story, had lost his wife Jan to cancer in February 2012. One of the charities he plans to gift part of the

money to is the Tom Baker Cancer Clinic at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital. He grew up in the valley, and received his schooling here. Tom’s dad, Bill Crist ran a Texaco service station in the downtown area, and then became the administrator of the Drumheller General Hospital. Tom’s win is the largest lottery win ever in Calgary, and is also the largest prize in the prairies and north that was won on a subscription. He plays both LOTTO MAX and LOTTO 6/49.

Centre Street Insurance, Re/Max Drumheller top up hampers Centre Street Insurance and Re/Max Drumheller have donated 20 turkeys to The Salvation Army for their Christmas Hampers. Owner/Broker Susan Kolenz says the gift of giving is important this time of year. The two businesses have been doing this for a number of years. At the donation are (l-r) Don Rosgen, Vicki Wilton, Amy O’Brien, Florence Johnson, Susan Kolenz and Lieutenant Dusty Sauder of The Salvation Army. Missing are Adele Lepine and Ian Cassels.

Wild Rose Party leader Danielle Smith was the guest of honour at a private fundraiser held Wednesday evening at Drumheller’s Heartwood Inn. Zeke Wolf told the inSide Drumheller that holding a fundraiser for the Wild Rose party was something he had in mind for a few years. “I admire the Wild Rose Party and the common sense approach they take on issues”, he said. “It takes money to run the party and we wanted to get her here to enjoy our hospitality, and it is a way for us to show support.”

The 15 guests dined on a five course dinner that included a variety of dishes prepared and served by Zeke, Patrice and their staff. Also in attendance at the function were Drumheller-Stettler MLA Rick Strankman, and Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills MLA Bruce Rowe, plus former Conservative MLA and cabinet minister Connie Osterman and her husband Joe. Osterman represented the Three Hills constituency from 1979 to 1992. Smith was able to connect with some of her supporters at the exclusive event, while at the same time raise some needed funds for the party.

Curling rink back online

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It didn’t take long, but the curling rink was back up and running Tuesday night for draws. The Mail reported in its December 18 edition the curling arena had been ordered closed after an inspection deemed it structurally unsafe last Thursday. The prospect of the old building remaining closed could have drastically cut into

the curling season, However less than a week later curlers were back on the ice after the needed repairs were made by Town of Drumheller staff. “It was one of those things, and our crew got right after it,” said Al Kendrick, director of Infrastructure Services. “We were lucky and secured the material needed, and with the assistance of some other people, it got done rath-

er quickly.” Kendrick said there were existing structural issues that were exacerbated by the heavy snowfall adding more pressure. “It was because of the age of the building, but it (the snow) was a contributing factor,” said Kendrick. That heavy first round of wet now we got, basically sat there, and we had some drifting.” Some of the beams

began sinking under the pressure, which caused a major sag. Crews were able to jack the beams back into place and then shore up the footings. “It is as safe as we can make it, but it is an old building. I don’t know what extent you want to go to continue to try and salvage it,” said Kendrick. He said crews also worked to clear the snow off the roof of the structure to alleviate the load.

By Tuesday night curling had resumed at the Drumheller curling rink after it was ordered closed last week. inSide photo by O.R. Sheddy

???DID YOU KNOW??? Did you know that it is against a town bylaw to shovel snow onto town streets from your driveway or property? There already is a lot of snow this winter please be considerate and do not push it onto the streets. It creates obstacles for your neighbors and further issues for vehicles on town streets. If anyone has any questions please call Greg Peters at the bylaw office at 823-1363

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW????? Members of the bylaw office are concerned about stray or lost cats out in the cold weather. If you have an unfamiliar cat perhaps hanging around your home or area kindly call the bylaw office so members can try and catch it and hopefully return it to its owner. If it is indeed lost and if an owner cannot be found at least then the cat will not be out in the cold weather and efforts can be taken to try and find it a new home. Animals need more food in the cold weather and it is doubtful that a stray or lost cat is getting an adequate amount of food. Please call Greg Peters at the bylaw office at 823-1363 if you have questions or would like more information. Thanks. If anyone would like further information or discuss any of the topics above please call Greg Peters of bylaw at town hall 823-1363. Thanks. Please call Greg at 403-823-1363 for more information.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM MAYOR TERRY YEMEN!

Christmas is a very special time for all of us, a time to spend with family and friends, reflect on passed accomplishments and plan for the New Year ahead. This past year has been an exciting one for our community, particularly as we celebrated 100 years, and I take this opportunity to congratulate everyone for their commitment, dedication and volunteerism for our community to make it a better place to live. As you reflect on the year gone by and celebrate the New Year, let’s take time to reach out to those who are in need, especially the elderly and less fortunate in our town. I would like to wish you all a very happy and joyous Christmas and a prosperous 2014. Mayor Terry Yemen

answer to any question in a ďŹ scally responsible province, or at least it didn’t used to be in Alberta. Somewhere along the line, that value was abandoned by the ďŹ scally irresponsible actions of a few. What is to throw more money at it? It seems the only other option this government feels they have to gain control over the AHS money-eating monster, is to throw more money at it. Unfortunately, their aim up to this point has been very poor and a lot of those funds seem to be eaten up in non-productive areas of health care, which only adds to the problem rather than offering any relief. Excessive executive salaries, bonuses for unspeciďŹ ed achievements for executives and disproportionate severance packages has cracked the door ever so slightly into a world where waste is king. The answer to this question depends on the perspective you view the world of health care from. AHS has had massive annual increases in health spending and yet waiting lists are at alltime highs. As recently as last week, we are still seeing patients left languishing in emergency rooms for hours and sometimes days, while conditions grow worse. Among the most pressing issues is how Seniors and other vulnerable Albertans are being made to wait extended periods of time to be treated for conditions that are progressively get-

ting worse with time. Those conditions can lead to other ailments, which can inevitably end up posing more of a cost burden to the health care system, than they would have, if treated in a reasonable amount of time. Finding a family physician has become increasingly more diďŹƒcult which adds to the problem of conditions that seem to become exponentially worse with the passage of time. Before attempting to answer this question, we have to also consider looking at what we’ve already done, so we do not repeat the same mistakes. The last decade has seen the Alberta government attempt to band-aid the problem by simply throwing vast amounts of cash at AHS executives and investing in their inevitable goldplated severance packages. Unfortunately, this government has limited it’s scope of options to solve the health care crisis we face in Alberta. Looking at the problems proactively would be a ďŹ rst and positive step towards answering the question. What is taking a proactive approach to curing an ailing system rather than a reactive one? It’s seems more logical than continuing to do the same thing and expecting a dierent result. Reforming health care will require principled leadership that is willing to work cooperatively with Albertans and health care professionals, to do what is necessary to rebuild and repair Alberta’s health care system.

Holiday Gift Guid Guide

Interact group rallies for Christmas Baskets for those in need Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Members of Drumheller’s Interact Club are sharing the Christmas spirit by collecting and creating gift baskets for those in need over the Christmas holiday. Interact, the Rotary International service club for youth, has two local chapters in Drumheller; one at DVSS and one at St. Anthony’s School. The club encourages youth to devel-

op leadership skills and service qualities. The club showed its support for those who, for whatever reason, could use a hand-up over the holiday, by holding their second annual “Interact Christmas Basket Drive” on December 18. The group was at the Greentree Mall from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Through The Salvation Army, the baskets will be delivered locally to members of the Drumheller com-

munity who are less fortunate. The baskets are designed to contain some of the basic needs as well as a few personal gifts to make it a brighter Christmas. Last year Interact was able to collect 50 baskets from Drumheller residents. The Service Club in Drumheller has only been in existence for less than two years, but in that time, it has made an impact.

While the Rotary Club has a member to act as an intermediary, the group is student organized and run. This year saw the new St. Anthony’s Chapter established. Watch for more Interact activities in the coming year. For more information feel free to contact Madison Colberg at 403-820-0736 or email maddy177@hotmail. com.

Age: Sixteen years older than my beard. Occupation: Delivering toys to all the boys and girls of the world. What do you like most about your job? Smiles on the children’s faces. How long will you be in Drumheller? I’ll be zipping in and out quicker than you can say “Holly Jolly”. Where are you from originally? There are differing answers out there, but I can’t really say as I don’t want the paparazzi to swamp my hometown. Which reindeer is your favourite? You know, I really can’t pick a favourite because they all have their strengths and they all have a special place in my heart. Do you have a favourite kind of cookie? I have sampled so many wonderful treats from so many different homes it is hard to pick just one. They’re all special because they come from the heart. Do you prefer milk or eggnog? Hard to pick a favourite again because there are so many varities out there. Any hobbies? Whistling and wood carving, jogging on my new Treadmaster from Mrs. Claus. What is no Christmas dinner complete without? Mrs. Claus, the elves, and the Reindeer happily munching in the stables - oh, and brussel sprouts. I love brussel sprouts. Favourite movies: The Santa Clause - such a great movie - and Shrek. What would you sing at karaoke? “I Saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus.” What’s your dearest wish? For the Maple Leafs to win the Stanley Cup. Any words of wisdom?

Merry Christmas to all! To nominate the next Who are you? Please give us a call at 403-823-2580, fax at 403-823-3864 or email news@insidedrumheller.com

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. December: Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain was our book this month. We enjoyed a festive get-together which included some thought-provoking discussion arising from this novel. Which lies are necessary? That was an interesting question coming from this book. The Eugenics sterilization program was in full force during the time period of this story. The author notes, at the end of the book, that this was an actual program from 1929 right up until 1975. North Carolina alone sterilized over 7,000 people, aimed at the mentally challenged but later expanded the program including those deemed “for the public good.” There were 65,000 across the United States. Social Workers and health officials had the power to determine whether or not an individual was “fit” to have children simply going by a criteria of I.Q., racial inferiority, epilepsy (as was the case in this story), promiscuity, as well as poverty.

Now at

ness Advisor Laureen Strellioff, and Branch Manager Jessica Reinhart, which is used for ongoing team expenses.

Lori Stefanishion Drumheller Mail Book Columnist The story is told from the perspective of two main characters. One is a fifteen year old girl, named Ivy Hart who lives on a tobacco farm with her sister and baby and the grandmother. They are dirt poor, but the owner of the farm allows them to live on his land. Of course there are always strings attached and hidden secrets. The other storyline comes from the voice of the social worker who becomes too emotionally attached to her clients and the whole sterilization process including the “necessary lies” tied to it. It is always interesting to consider events during the course of our lifetime and marvel at how they were real and actual! Thankfully, we have come a long way since so many incidents took place that we now consider them to be barbaric. We all enjoyed this book and unanimously agreed that everyone is entitled to rights and freedom regardless of race, intelligence and social standing. What one person determines to be in one’s best interest isn’t always what is best in the end.
