Ryan Hatch (left) and Dawn Sullivan display their flapjack flipping prowess at the Drumheller Valley Secondary School’s pancake breakfast on December 22. This is the first year that the annual pancake breakfast has resumed. In the previous two years, the facilities at Central School prevented the event, and an attempt to make breakfast using a barbecue left the cooks feeling frigid. DVSS teachers cook the meals, which consist of pancakes, sausage, and fried eggs. Students appreciate the delicious breakfast and the break from class. inSide photo by Michael James

Letter to the Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor, Fracking -As I see it! The unfettered pathological race for oil and gas, has hit a new low. The blasting that is fracking for gas, in mostly coal bed areas, thereby destroying the availability of zillions of tons of stable energy source - coal, has hit a new low and complete idiocy, Coal has been the constant medium for heat, electrical generating and steam generating, for eons of civilization. The thousands of uses and products, made from coal, are too many to list. Surely, man’s ingenuity will solve the Co2 purification dilemma, whenever the right economic and financial desire dictates it. The disastrous damage of fracking and horizontal drilling can never be over emphasized. Polluting and poisoning of the subsurface streams, pools and lakes of water and the poisoning of the surface, streams, rivers and lakes is happening now. Water is the number one ingredient for humans life, and all the other earthly species. Secondly, the shattering of the rock and shale subsurface strata, makes recovery of coal and other minerals impossible. The number one task and cost of mining, is the attempt to hold up the zillions of tons of overburden that covers these resources. These facts are being hidden, unfortunately, and the future harvest of these critical and necessary invaluable resource assets are being compromised for our children, and future generations. When the gas and oil reserves have been depleted and rushed out of the country, the mammoth tons of stable underground coal and minerals are being shattered, insanely. The solar and wind production of power and electricity is still miniscule, compared to coal generated electricity and steam heating. Atomic electric power production is on it’s last legs, with all the worldly horrible accidents that we are witnessing. So where do we go for the need of heat and power for the future exploding populations of the world? I’m speaking as an excoalminer, still wearing the scars of mining, in stable rock and shale, making coal recovery reasonable. However, the blind rush for the quick buck will be remembered historically, as a monstrous error in human judgement. Sane states, provinces and countries, have banned it long ago. It must be said that
the oil and gas, and pipeline corporations have had their way in Alberta, for too long! E.R.C.B. adherence to these company’s whims, must be rated at “at least” 98%, for the affirmative! Yet, the Auditor-General’s report of the “miniscule royalties”, that Albertan’s, the supposed owners of these resources, have never had a “say” in what they should be receiving for the rent of their land. No political party yet has dared to ask for a plebiscite for their constituents! We have witnessed deficits and deteriorating healthcare, senior care, education, and childcare problems. Today is so close ‘til Christmas, help make it the “best Christmas’ ever for your children, and do not allow further destruction of our most valuable pure water resources. “As I see it!” Frank J. Toth Letter to the Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor, After reading both stories from The Drumheller Mail on December 7, 2011, and the Insider on December 16, 2011, I feel it is my responsibility as the supervisor of Community Enforcement to provide further information to the public. It appears that members of the public and some elected officials are not interpreting the legislation correctly. Statements made in the articles are indicating that if a dog barks it could be deemed vicious. This is incorrect. The draft bylaw is clear on what the definition is as indicated: 21.0 Vicious Dogs 21.1 If a Bylaw Enforcement Officer believes on reasonable and probable grounds that a dog has: (a) Chased, injured, or bitten a person or other animal; (b) Damaged or destroyed property; (c) Threatened or created the reasonable apprehension of a threat to a person or other animal; or (d) Been previously determined to be a dangerous dog under the Dangerous Dogs Act R.S.A. 2000 c. D-3; (e) The Bylaw Enforcement Officer may seize and impound the dog at the animal control shelter and recommend to the Chief Administrative Officer be declared a vicious dog.
Officer has declared a dog to be a vicious dog, a Bylaw Enforcement Officer shall provide written notification of the declaration to the dog’s owner. The officer must have reasonable and probable grounds to pursue the section, not based on officer discretion. The provincial statute, Dangerous Dogs Act, is very clear: Complaint as to bite 1. A justice may take cognizance of a complaint that a dog has bitten or attempted to bite a person and if it appears to the justice that the dog ought to be destroyed, the justice shall direct a peace officer to destroy it. We cannot supersede this legislation and the bylaw is consistent with other municipal legislation passed within Alberta in the last two years. I would welcome any questions from the public to help inform and educate the citizens of Drumheller to be better prepared to make an informed decision. Respectfully, Darcy Nundahl Supervisor, Peace Officer Editor’s Note: A further comment may add to the dialogue. As is the case in most bylaws, interpretation of the various sections is key. One persons judgement on a complaint may differ vastly from another’s. To note, there is grounds in the bylaw for an appeal process, which it would only be fair for someone to intervene on behalf of a dog who cannot defend itself. If the dog is deemed vicious on the judgement of one person, that in itself is far too cruel a punishment.
21.2 Upon receipt of a recommendation form a Bylaw Enforcement pursuant to subsection 21.1, the Chief Administrative Officer may declare the dog to be a vicious dog. 21.3 If the Chief Administrative
Letter to the Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor, Re: Economic Task Force Survey results The results of the survey are quite interesting and helpful to the merchants in downtown Drumheller. Many changes can be made as a result. However, the demographics of the survey do not include the views of the tourists and this single point needs to be clarified. The downtown core is very appealing to tourists once they find out it is here. The main point of concern. Agreeably, the area could upgrade to a more tourist friendly ambiance comparable to other small Tourist centers such as Banff, Canmore, etc. Considering the bulk of Drumheller’s downtown income relies on tourism, changes should not be implemented based on a survey of local residents. (The survey was included in water bills). Many opinions on what should be done to provide shopping traffic have been made, however these whimsical opinions should not be held as concepts for improvement until the merchants affected have been consulted. Closing Main Street to traffic is certainly a consideration that would enhance outdoor patio seating, but this is something that the proprietors should collectively apply to the town to have implemented, not vice versa. The fate of the traffic in the downtown core should not be decided through committee members who do not have a direct vested interest in the downtown area. Sincerely, Doug Flotten

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

BOXING WEEK
Christmas Morn I have always set a plate of warm croissants on the coffee table while everyone is opening their gifts on Christmas morning. Then, when life settles down a bit, I have the time to make our traditional Eggs Benedict and everyone has the time to sit and enjoy at the table. I just came across a recipe that enhances the croissant and makes it a very filling (and easy) breakfast on its own: Use a tube of Pilsbury Crescent Rolls and before rolling each one up, place a pile of scrambled eggs with bacon and cheese on each triangle. Place on cookie sheet and bake as usual for about 12 minutes at 375. These Scrambled Egg Croissants can still be managed as a finger-food on the coffee table. Here’s another very easy way to serve breakfast and fill those tummies while keeping up with the excitement of opening presents. Serve Coffee Cup Eggs along with a cup of coffee: Simply grease a microwave-safe coffee mug, add 2 eggs and 2 Tbsp. milk. Beat with a fork to blend. Microwave on high for 45 seconds. Stir, then microwave another 30 - 45 seconds until almost set. Top with 2 Tbsp. grated cheese. The eggs will finish cooking while it sits and cheese melts. *Be sure to use a microwave cup, otherwise the mug will get too hot to handle; and it may even break.
SPECIALS
Selected items throughout the store How easy is that for everyone to hang onto a coffee mug of breakfast while gathered around the Christmas tree? And yet another option, as pictured, is to bake eggs in silicone cupcake liners. Very easy to make, serve and eat. Our tradition of eating croissants while opening gifts began when my children were small. I used to drink an instant type of cappuccino, back in the day, years ago. My kids were always asking for a taste of it or even coffee if someone had a cup. I would always tell them they could have some at Christmas. And so the cherished custom of Christmas coffee was born. From there, we added croissants! May you enjoy your Christmas morning and cherished customs, both old and new. 51m

WHOare you?
Age: Very, very old, but Mrs. Claus says I’m young at heart. Job Title: Father Christmas. What do you like most about your job? Giving everyone the merriest Christmas they can have. What three words would you use to describe yourself? Jolly, jolly, and jolly. Where are you from? The North Pole of course. What are some of your top travel destinations? Well I’ve been all over the world. Everywhere has something special. What do you like to do in the off season? Well Mrs. Claus, the elves, reindeer, and I celebrate Christmas. Then we start building more toys for next Christmas! If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you bring? Well, Mrs. Claus of course. Probably some tools to make toys. And reindeer so I could still deliver toys to all the good boys and girls. Choose one thing to eat for the rest of your life? Cookies, I can’t get enough of them. Favourite movies? Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer and A Christmas Carol. If you were making a movie about your life, whom would you want to play the part of you? Well so many people have played the part of me already. I really liked Edmund Gwenn. For someone new I would say Ian McKellan. Favourite songs? I like most of them, but my favourites would be Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Deck the Halls. What would be your theme song? Have a Holly Jolly Christmas. What is one piece of technology you could not live without? A sleigh. Favourite sports? I really like cross country skiing. Favourite colour? Red and green. Any words of wisdom? A Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Winter can be especially hard to bear in Alberta. The snow and biting cold can make the holiday season uncomfortable or even dangerous without the proper attire. To help those in need of proper winter wear, the students of Morrin School started a Mitten Tree campaign that ran from December 12 to 21. Mittens, toques, and other winter wear were collected and placed on a Christmas tree in lieu of ornaments. Members of the Morrin community also stopped by to donate items for the tree. The frigid climate was the inspiration for the cam-

paign. “We wanted to do something different as a school,” said Katie Pennock, a Wellness Worker for Project REACH. “When I sent out the notes to the homes, I mentioned we have cold winters in Alberta.” The items that were collected will be donated to The Salvation Army. “I had spoken to The Salvation Army and they said they had bags of thin mittens, but it’s the heavier ones that tend not to be donated,” said Pennock. “It really took off, the kids really took ownership of it,” continued Pennock. “I can’t find an empty branch to save me.”

Freson Bros. IGA meat manager Ceasar Pulvinar showing some of the genetically certified Alberta pork the store sells.
As more consumers ask where their food comes from, Freson Bros. IGA has signed on to a program where they have genetic proof their pork is home-grown. The Freson Bros. chain, which operates in communities throughout Alberta, is carrying Sturgeon Valley based out of the St. Albert area. This company has adopted a genetic traceability system called DNA TraceBack. This system allows the company to back up their claims that the pork they produce is homegrown. The DNA Traceback system is developed by Irish company IdentiGen, a tracking technology in use in Europe since 2000. “The DNA TraceBack system is easy to implement, and it helps us establish a credible link from our farms through our processing facility to the consumer. From our point of view, being able to oer foolproof traceability is a key to building trust with the consumer,â€? said Dan Majeau, one of the principals at Sturgeon Valley Pork in a press release. Each package of pork in Freson Bros. IGA in Drumheller that is from Sturgeon Valley bears a label certifying it is Alberta pork. Darryl Jacques, manager of Freson Bros. IGA in Drumheller says they have been carrying the certiďŹ ed Alberta pork for about a

month and they have seen a spike in the amount of pork purchased. “In this day and age people are more concerned about where their food is coming from,â€? said Jacques. “People are curious partly because there have been issues in the past in dierent parts of the world, and it's nice to know we can trace it back to the farmers.â€? The program takes samples of animals at the farm, and then randomly at the retailer. These
samples are sent to IdentiGEN’s lab in the US to verify. Jacques said Freson Bros. prefer to buy as local as they can. “We have been promoting that we only have Alberta pork, it’s not coming from China, it’s not coming from the deep US. It is only Alberta pork and that is what we are going to stick with.

18th Annual Christmas Benefit Games supports Salvation Army submitted | inSide Drumheller
The FunTeam Hockey Club held its 18th Annual Christmas BeneďŹ t Games and was able to pass on its good will to the local Salvation Army. For almost two decades the club has been holding the event and it reects its vision to promote citizenship among the players. Each player is asked to go out and earn their own money and with this money purchase food items that they would like to donate to The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper Program. The result has been a history of support for families in Drumheller who are in need over the holiday season, and throughout the year.

The Dragons were unable to get a shot by D’Amico all night, despite an intense effort during the second and third periods. with each being decided in a shoot out. On December 21 however, the Oilers dominated. The Dragons began the game on the defensive. The Oilers pressured the Dragons, preventing the them from generating much offense. The Dragons were only able to ďŹ re four shots at the Oilers net in the ďŹ rst period. After the ďŹ rst intermission the Dragons came out stronger and managed to generate a lot more scoring opportunities in the second and third periods, but couldn’t get the puck past Oilers goaltender Jared D’Amico. “In the last 8 minutes we played like we could, but we couldn’t get any goals,â€? said head coach Barry Wol. Penalties, although fewer than recent games, were the bane of the Dragons in Wednesday’s game. The penalty killing units were unable to prevent the Oilers from scoring three powerplay goals. The Dragons powerplay couldn’t penetrate the Oilers defense and were 0 for 5. The Oilers were able to turn things around on a tripping penalty incurred by them, getting past the Dragons powerplay unit and scoring short handed. “We had chances to score, but we didn’t. Then they scored short handed, which took the wind out of our sails,â€? said Wol. Wednesday’s game was the second last before the Dragons, and the rest of the AJHL take their Christmas break.
