A Christmas dinner like no other One of Drumheller’s most enduring Christmas traditions took place earlier this week. On Thursday, Drumheller Valley Secondary School (DVSS) invited seniors and dignitaries to take part in the 20th Seniors’ Dinner. The DVSS gymnaisum was stuffed, both from the number of people and the dinner itself, and students helped serve the hundreds of meals and provide some Christmas entertainment. inSide photos by Patrick Kolafa

inSide STREETERS Sony and Microsoft released their latest video game consoles just in time for the holidays, so inSide Drumheller asks: “What are your thoughts on the new systems?”

Steven Peterson “Anything they can do, a PC can do better. Better graphics, more speed, and LAN parties are pretty fun.”

OPINION Century 21 sponsoring USA bobsled and Skeleton team Submitted

| inSide Drumheller This year Century 21 is sponsoring the USA Bobsled and Skeleton team and last week local broker Bob Sheddy was able to get a taste of the action. The Century 21 bobsled will be seen during the entire 2013-2014 World Cup season. The first stop last week was in Calgary and the Century 21 Real Estate LLC was proud to host the Century 21 Bobsled Team. “Our sponsorship of the USA Bobsled and Skeleton Team is another example of our position as the ‘Smarter. Bolder. Faster.’ real estate team in the industry,” said Bev Thorne, Chief Market-

ing Officer, Century 21 Real Estate LLC. “Whether it’s the Super Bowl, the Bobsled team, U.S. Soccer, or the Indy 500, we are committed to showcasing the capabilities of our sales professionals in front of the largest audiences on a global scale, and in association with worldclass events.” The tour includes stops in Calgary, Canada; Park City, Utah; Lake Placid, N.Y.; Winterberg, Germany; St. Moritz, Switzerland; Igls, Austria; and Koenigssee, Germany. “We have an ambitious growth plan and this initiative will help us as we continue to build our presence around the globe,” said Rick Davidson, presi-

dent and CEO, Century 21 Real Estate LLC. “Our brokers and agents will benefit from the visibility and credibility a campaign like this will generate from real estate con-

sumers and fans of the Games.” “We couldn’t be more excited about partnering with Century 21 for the Olympic season,” said Darrin Steele, USBSF

CEO. “They are industry leaders who know what it takes to be the best, and we are proud to team with them.”

A solution to protect kids crossing North Dinosaur Trail next to St. Anthony’s School may be just around the corner. According to officials with the Town of Drumheller and Alberta Transportation, options for the crossing are being reviewed. “We had a conference call with Alberta Transportation yesterday (Wednesday, No-

vember 27) where we talked about solutions to the crossing,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. “Transportation has taken it back and said they’d get back to us.” inSide Drumheller was able to speak with a spokeperson from Alberta Transportation, who said the wait could be into the new year. “We are in the midst of a review of the school and highway safety around there. We haven’t decided

yet what to do. Right now, we’re collecting some technical background, like actual vehicle speeds, internal school area traffic, and we are consulting with the Town, RCMP, and school,” said Karen Sigurdson, Alberta Transportation spokesperson. “When we are done, it will likely be in the new year.” Currently, the highway in front of St. Anthony’s School is set at 70 kilometres per hour

and is controlled by a set of traffic lights. To use the walk and stop traffic, users must activate the lights. Out of the discussion, two options are being considered. The first would be to make a school zone there, where we’d knock it down to 30 kilometres per hour for two hours each school day,” said Mayor Yemen. “The other option was an advanced warning, about 150

yards, for the crosswalk. When the kids hit the button for the crosswalk, warning lights 150 yards each way would light up.” When the review is complete, Alberta Transportation will notify Drumheller residents about any changes. “We will communicate any changes to the public and parents,” said Sigurdson.

O’Shea’s picks top ‘staches O’Sheas was quite stylish on Saturday, November 30, for their annual Movember wrap-up party. The O’Sheas team raised $610 for Movember, which will go towards prostate cancer research and awareness. Prizes were awarded to the best mustaches. The Fullest Mustache went to Tim Dennis, the Best Styled to Jamie Worman, Folliclely Challenged to Luke Reig, and the most money raised, at $450, went to Tim Dennis. At the end, the contestants and judges gathered for a photo and included (l-r) Cory Clark, Chris Greenwood, Jamie Worman, Heather Jones, Luke Reig, Tim Dennis, Marae Doble, Deanna Davidson, and Natasha Reid.

Council approves new skatepark location Michael James

| inSide Drumheller Drumheller is one step closer to having a brand new skatepark after the Drumheller Town Council approved the selection of a new location. Previously, the Drumheller Association of Skateboard Enthusiasts (DASE) had requested the use of the area immediately north of the fountain and west of the Aquaplex for their new park. After consulting the community, it became evident a new location was preferred, so two weeks ago DASE approached Town Council and asked for the use of the single tennis court, immediately east of the outdoor swimming pool and north of the Drumheller and District Cham-

ber of Commerce. “It was definitely a relief and it makes things a lot easier. It will make fundraising easier,” said Nick Sereda, a member of DASE. “With the original site by the fountain, it limited what we could do. At the new location, the extra space really opens up what we can create.” On Monday, December 2, Council gave the green light for the new location. Councillor Sharel Shoff sought clarification on whether the new skatepark would interfere with plans for the second phase of the Badlands Community Facility. Administration assured everyone the new location would not impact construction on a new curling arena or ice surface. Construction is expected to commence

in the spring. Now that we have the location pinned down, it’ll make things a lot easier,” said Sereda.

Each year the people of our community open their hearts and support The Tree of Hope Campaign in memory and in honor of their loved ones and friends. This year we’d like to raise funds for the Palliative Care and the Recreational Therapy garden so that they may continue to provide a space for patients and their families to go to meditate and recharge, when in need. Please join us at the Drumheller Health Centre in the Chapel as we light The Tree of Hope and fondly remember our loved ones during the holiday season. Purchase an Ornament in memory of a loved one, or as a ‘Greeting of Hope’. These may be purchased at anytime during the holiday season. Donations of $5 or more will result in a personalized ornament being hung on the tree for your friend or loved one. Donations of over $20 will result in both an ornament and a card of greetings to the person of your choice. The ornaments will be yours to take or give away, as you wish, any time after the ceremony. Donations may be given to the receptionist on duty at the hospital admitting desk, the Foundation Secretary, Linda Ames or to the Site Administration Secretary, Kathy Dudley. BREAK

Sudoku

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Horoscopes ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, delay your plans for the time being. A number of unexpected tasks that will require your undivided attention in the coming day, so clear your schedule. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Assume the role of the strong and silent type this week, Taurus. You do not have to share your opinions with everyone, as an air of mystery may boost your popularity. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 It can be easy to allow excitement to overtake your logic, Gemini. But you need to be patient and not allow exuberance to interfere with the tasks at hand. That is a recipe for trouble. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, a hefty workload at the office may zap your desire to do much else. However, don’t pass up the opportunity when a social engagement beckons this week.

Our focus is to help people get started, get better and go further in hockey.â€? RBC is committed to helping make hockey happen in communities across North America. As a premier partner of Hockey Canada and USA Hockey, RBC is an oďŹƒcial sponsor of each country’s men’s and women’s national teams, the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, and Canada’s National Junior ‘A’ Championship - RBC Cup.
