This week’s chinook winds may have tried to kill “Frosty,” causing Taylor Kluck, 14, to do some touchup work on her half-melted snowman on Wednesday afternoon. Warmer weather is expected over the New Year's weekend. The picture was taken through a shrub decorated with Christmas lights on the Kluck's front lawn.

inSide STREETERS Morgan Jayne Project gives extraordinary Christmas to island kids A new year brings a clean slate, and many in the valley will be using 2011 to accomplish longtime personal goals. inSide Drumheller asks, “What are your New Year’s resolutions?”
Guy Cassie “I don’t make them, so I can’t break them.”
Val James “Same as it is every year: eat healthy, live healthy, and exercise.”
Bill Wolfe “I have nothing I want to give up.”
submitted| inSide Drumheller Fred Makowecki of the Morgan Jayne Project sent this letter describing the Christmas party on Roatan, where money from the generous donators of Drumheller supports the Familias Saludables clinic. There, they treat infants born to HIV positive mothers, and sometimes treat the kids to unimaginable days on the impoverished island. Imagine the best day of your life as a child. No wait, just a minute – imagine first that you are a child in a third world country. Your parents love you and try hard, but often you don’t have enough to eat, you frequently are infested by parasites and if you go to school you are considered lucky. Now, add that your mom (and your dad too if he’s around) has AIDS. Your neighbours, friends and family shun you and want nothing to do with you. Kids at school spit at you and even the teacher makes you sit in the corner, away from the other kids in case you “infect” them with AIDS germs you’ve brought from home. Maybe you have AIDS as well? You were born too late to get into the Morgan Jayne Program and so every day you take medication to stay alive, knowing that if you’re over two, you already have outlived most predictions for you to be here. Ok, now imagine it’s Christmas. Not a particularly happy time for a child in your circumstances, but then, once again, imagine what the best day of your life would be. It would start with you getting up and getting bathed, your mom putting on the new outfit that she’d gotten from Familias Saludables the week before. She would do your hair, slick it, braid it – whatever it takes so you look your best. You go with your family to the one place on the island that every kid wants to go, the new fast food place: Wendy’s Play Park. You’ve seen this from the outside before, but your parents’ could never afford to take you there, besides it's not for poor kids is it? You not only get to go into it but you get to play at
the play park and they bring your hamburgers and fries and soda! If this wasn’t enough, Santa comes with a huge bag of toys for you, and you don’t have to share, your brothers and sisters get their own! You look inside and you can see that every gift was picked especially for you, the clothes fit you, you’ve gotten exactly what you wanted and no kid got the same things. Your heart is ready to burst. They feed you all the chocolate cake you can eat. Your mom and dad are so happy, you see them laugh for the first time in months. Then a nice man comes and gives you a special button and tells you with this button you can ride the brand new Ferris wheel outside! What? The Ferris wheel is just opening today and everyone knows it costs a dollar and a half to ride it. No, remember this is your fantasy, you get to ride it for free.. again and again. While you’re standing in line, that nice man hands out little toy cars and cameras to you and all the kids with a button! All the other kids, the kids whose parents have money to ride the Ferris wheel, beg for a button and ask if they can join your club. For once in your life someone wants to be in your shoes! Then Miss Valerie Nelson comes with a whole stack of things that look like credit cards in her hands and tells you to follow her. She leads you to a place in the mall you’ve never seen but you’ve seen ones like it on TV. It’s a games arcade and Ms. Valerie hands you a card that’s good for any of the games there: motorcycles, bumper cars, air hockey, win a prize games… anything you want! You are almost delirious as you run around choosing games and trying to absorb all this. It’s Ms. Valerie again, taking you back to Wendy’s for more food. You were just getting hungry again and they are feeding you again! This makes two meals you’ve had today! Then outside where they have a big ceremony and they dedicate it to you, your family and the other families there like yours. They ask you to count backwards from ten. You don’t know why but you do it, at zero the fireworks light up the sky. They know all kids love fireworks! After a phenom-

Food for
thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist
I thought the paper would be out on the 30th? If not, is there time for this week’s? So it goes in time to make this for New Year’s. IF not, I will maybe send something else and use this another time. This was a hit at my Christmas party, as I imagined it would be. So many people love French Onion Soup and this is just that, except all in one bite. It’s a good one for preparing ahead because you freeze the first couple steps. I was able to start this a week ahead. During the party, I kept a few small batches in the fridge and simply reheated them for 5 minutes to replenish the plates. I think this would be great for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. It can be a finger-food with hors d’ourves or an appetizer course by serving of several in a dish. It would also be great in place of soup.
French Onion Soup “Bites”
For the “soup”: 1/2 cup butter 1 cup thinly sliced onions 1/2 cup thinly sliced shallots (2 medium-sized) 1 cup dry red wine 1 cup low salt beef broth 1 cup low salt chicken broth 2 Tbsp. chopped fresh thyme 1 Tbsp. aged balsamic vinegar salt and pepper Melt the butter and saute the onion and shallots at medium-low for aboout half an hour, stirring often until they are nicely caramelized. Raise the heat to medium and add the wine, cooking until it evaporates. Add the broth and cook until the liquied reduces by about half. Add the thyme, vinegar and season. Cook another minute. Cool then place in an 8 inch loaf pan. Freeze until solid. When ready to make the dumplings, set the pan in a bit of warm water just to loosen the mixture. Dump
the pan upside down to remove the frozen soup. Cut lengthwise into 4 long strips then cut each strip crosswise into 10. They should be about 3/4 inch square. For the dumplings: 40 square wonton wrappers 1 large egg, beaten 3 cups oil 1 3/4 grated Gruyere cheese (or 20 Swiss slices, cut in 1/2) 40 bread cubes, made from a French loaf Work with about 10 wrappers at a time, so they don’t dry out. Brush edges with egg. Put one square of frozen soup on wrapper and fold up the edges, pressing to create a star-like shape. Freeze on a cookie sheet until ready to fry. Heat the oil to 365 - you can test it by placing the corner of a dumpling into it. If the oil bubbles and ripples, then it’s ready. Don’t crowd the dumplings and fry several at a time until they brown. This just takes a couple minutes. I turned them over while they were frying to brown them evenly.Transfer to a cooling rack or paper towels to drain. When cool, place a wooden pick in the centre of each, sprinkle with grated cheese, then top with a bread cube. Bake at 425 for about 5 minutes until melted nicely. If using sliced cheese, fold in half and place on skewer before the bread cube. An alternate method is to use a crouton on a wooden pick and stick it into the cheese-topped dumpling after removing from oven. You can make your own croutons or use ready made ones. I used the bread to save time and was able to assemble everything the day before. I just popped the trays into the oven with no other preparations. I also made a larger amount and used an 8” square cake pan for the soup mixture. Sharing good food with good friends or family is a good way to ring in the New Year!

September 21, 1940 - December 25, 2010 Bunny, beloved wife of David, passed away peacefully at the Cowichan District Hospital, with her family by her side; after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Bunny will be forever lovingly remembered by her sister Shirley (Elizabeth) Common, her children; Diana Watson (Bouke), Alisa Dayman (Fred), Kristina Hall, Rosemarie Fleury (Frank); her grandchildren, great-grandson, sisters and brothers-in-law, nephews as well as many cherished friends and loved ones. Bunny was pre-deceased by her parents, Rev. John Hayhurst in 1964 and Norma C. Hayhurst in 1998. Bunny was born in Hazleton, BC in 1940. She grew up and attended school in Kitwanga, Prince Rupert, and Alert Bay, BC. She moved to Oyen, AB in 1959, where she met and married David in April 1960. In 1962 she co-founded the Oyen Echo newspaper, which is still in print today. In 1969 they moved to Drumheller, AB to raise their family. During those years Bunny co-owned and operated a number of businesses including, Bill Cross Men’s Shop, The New Look Nook, The White Elephant, and Bunny’s Flea Market. Bunny retired back to BC in 2007 with her husband of fifty years, where they were residing at Silver Park in Duncan. Bunny was a member of the Drumheller Art Club and Bridge Club. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Sabres aim for three-peat at home tourney Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
The St. Anthony Sabres senior boys basketball team are looking to three-peat at their home tournament on January 7 and 8. Last year the Sabres put out a strong defensive effort to beat a tough Vulcan team and win the 2010 Sabres Invitational. This year the competition looks just as strong with teams coming from all over Alberta to play. While the Sabres have been strong early in the season and have earned a honourable mention at the provincial 1A level, there are more
tough teams to beat including Rosemary, Rundle Academy, Ecole De La Rose Sauvage, Forestburg, Erle Rivers, Our Lady of the Snows and Heritage Christian, which earned an early season #10 provincial ranking. Leading up to Christmas, the Sabres played in its Alumni Game against former St. Anthony’s players. This was a good test for the team as for the first time this season they played a team that matched their height and strength below the basket. Because of this, the guards and forwards put their nos-

es to the grindstones to put points on the board. T.J Jones knocked in 15 points, and Mitch Barry also had 15 points, including three straight three-pointers. Josh Mohan had a solid line with five points, four assists and four steals in the 61-44 win. Before the team hits the court for the Sabres Invitational, they will be on the road to play Acme in league play Wednesday, January 5. This could be an important match for the Sabres as there is a good chance they will meet in not only league play but possibly zones. The Sabres take the court for tournament play at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 7 to play Our Lady of the Snows. If they are victorious, they will play at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The final is at 7:15 p.m. Saturday.

Alright, you’ve gotten through Christmas, the shopping, the parties, the big dinner and the Boxing Day sales. You’ve done real well, oh sure you’re a little heavier around the middle and a little lighter in the wallet, but all in all you made it. Not so fast. You need a good finishing kick to get through the last part of this marathon, variously known as “The Festive Season”, “The Christmas Holidays” and “The Silly Season”. The last part is, of course, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. New Year’s Eve, for some reason, is not what it used to be, at least not for me it isn’t. I am over the age of 50 (closer to 60) which could be the problem, as most parties, dances and the like, are pretty much reserved and populated by those in their late 20’s to mid 40’s. Not that this is a prohibition on my partying, it’s just that I am no longer as inclined as I was years ago. The last time I watched the sun rise on New Year’s Day, I was 29 years old, and escorting a young lady home after a night of revelry. Those were the days. But back to you. If you do go out and party hard on New Year’s Eve, good for you, but remember, you must also stay awake on New Year’s Day long enough to watch a minimum of two college bowl games. Thus does end the “season” and your marathon. You may call yourself a real man. I have four siblings, a younger brother and sister and an older brother and sister, situating me firmly in the middle. None of them live here, all of them live in Calgary. They all own computers and use them on a regular basis at work and at home. I have no real use for a computer and so don’t own one. Christmas morning that all changed. I was dragged from my cave, kicking and protesting, but to no avail. They had pooled their resources and bought me a portable laptop computer. I told them that I did not want it in my house, to take it back, that I would not open it. I held out for forty eight hours, after which my sisters cajoled me into opening it. I did not actually open it, they did, and they played around hooking it up, phoning the cable company for internet. I refused to touch it for the longest time. After more cajoling, there I was, in front of the screen, my fingers on the keypad, my hand on the mouse, my sisters guiding my moves. I typed in my first phrase: “My screwball sisters have decided I needed to move into the new century.” It was done, my innocence lost. No more can I proudly proclaim, “I don’t own a computer”. Fear not, I shall not so easily succumb to the ubiquitous, revolting, obtrusive menace that is the cell phone. I will own one of those never. You will have to pry open my cold, dead hand before you fill it with a cell phone. Of course, if my sisters gang up on me again ...
