Radar speed sign one more tool for highway safety Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
The Drumheller RCMP Detachment has one more piece of equipment in its arsenal to promote safer roads and highways. Last week the RCMP took receipt of a portable radar speed sign. This is a sign that can be placed in trouble
areas where speeding is prevalent and displays to drivers how fast they are travelling as a reminder to slow down. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins explains the sign comes out of the detachment’s rural budget so its use would be primarily on highways surrounding the valley, however
it could make it onto streets in Drumheller. Corporal Rod Guthrie walked inSide Drumheller through a display of the new equipment. The sign is portable and is pulled like a trailer and is fully self contained. A solar panel keeps a battery pack charged to power the unit. It can
be programmed with a smart phone and can be set to various speed thresholds. It is equipped with a camera and can be set to capture images of vehicles passing. Although these images may not be used in enforcement, they could be used to send a stern reminder to drivers to ease up on the pedal.
The data on the area where the speed sign is located could also be collected to determine any traffic concerns. As soon as officers are trained on the use of the equipment, deriver can expect to see it deployed on a roadway in the area.

Riverside Drive East, serving a reminder to drivers to be aware of their speed on residential roads and in playground zones.

Time spent with family is priceless, and this Family Day there are a number of activities to do for free. The Royal Tyrrell Museum is offering free admission on Family Day to mark the holiday. Throughout the weekend, the museum will be offering all the fine programming it has been lauded for including free Storytime each day at 12:15. On Monday, there is an additional Storytime at 2:15. Throughout the weekend, there will be free audio and video presentations in the au-
ditorium. Passion for the Past explores how palaeontologists uncover fascinating mysteries from the past. This video was the bronze winner of the 2008 Interpretation Canada Awards of Excellence. Behind the Scenes, a video presentation of what happens to fossils after they arrive at the museum, will also be playing throughout the day. There also free crafts and fossil casting ($10) offered. There is even more family fun planned at the Badlands Community Facility on Monday. The field house will feature an inflatable obstacle course includ-
ing an 18-foot slide and a bouncy house. There will also be some board game action. Drop in from noon until 5 p.m.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. The Drumheller Memorial Arena will be open for free skating from noon until
4 p.m. and the Drumheller Aquaplex will be offering a toonie swim from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Diamond shines bright at Drumheller Legion Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller
They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but the songs of Neil Diamond are friendly to most everyone. This Saturday evening the Drumheller Legion is hosting a night of Neil Diamond. Jason Scott is bringing Diamonds are Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond for all to enjoy. Scott is the creator and performance artist for the one-man show exploring Diamond’s music and stage persona. The show spans Diamond’s entire career. “Neil Diamond has recorded his music so many times, and changed it so much, that interpreting that music can in itself be an art,” said Scott. “When you look at Neil Diamond’s history and career of six decades, you realize the music and the possibilities of that music are unlimited.” Scott’s show has been lauded all over. In 2005,
he was the first Canadian to win the “Be a Legend Celebrity Tribute Contest in Las Vegas. From there, he has won several international awards for his performances. Diamonds are Forever a Celebration of Neil Diamond is more than just a concert. It features authentic costumes, background stories, studio recorded tracks, spot on vocal tracks and audience interaction. It is a hit for all audiences, whether you are a fan of Diamonds from the 1960s or the 1990s. “This music bridges generations,” said Scott. “The show is structured but also spontaneous, loose and huge fun as the performance is very audience interactive, sometimes I find myself in the crowd and then other times I’ve found some of the audience on stage with me.” Diamonds are Forever is being held Saturday, February 15. The Drumheller and District Music Festival Association met Monday to finalize plans and hammer out schedules for March’s music festival. Entries closed January 24, and Entry Secretary Tracy Kakuk said voice has the largest number of entries with 36 hours of vocal competition spread over five days. This category covers ev-
erything from musical theatre to classical to pop to hymns. There were few entries last year in the speech category, so the association encouraged more participation. “I think there’s been a lot of interest - we really pushed for more people to do speech,” Kakuk explained. She said the schools are getting students to recite poems or write their own - for example, one student put in
two poems she wrote herself. The largest age group of performers is from 8 to 16, however Kakuk notes there are adults on piano entered in this year’s competition. This year’s Drumheller and District Music Festival takes place at a number of venues thoughout Drumheller from March 18, and concludes on the evening of March 28, Performers on-stage at the Drumheller competition, as well as 36 hours of vocal when the final concert and District Music Festival. Influenza vaccine still available to youngsters Submitted | inSide Drumheller
Using additional doses of influenza vaccine secured by Alberta Health, Alberta Health Services (AHS) will now be offering influenza vaccine
to all children who turned, or will turn, six months of age, on or after December 1, 2013, through to March 31, 2014. Influenza vaccine also continues to be offered to all children less than nine years of
age who received a first dose of influenza vaccine already this season, and still require a second dose. Children (less than nine years of age) receiving influenza vaccine for the first time this season require two doses, to be fully immunized. Parents of children in either of the above noted groups can call Health Link Alberta, or their local Public Health Office, for information on accessing the vaccine for their child. Although influenza vaccine is no longer available for Albertans outside the above noted two groups, all Albertans are encouraged to continue their
vigilance in preventing the further spread of illness in our communities by following preventative precautions: • Cover your cough: Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when sneezing or coughing. If you don’t have a tissue, always cough or sneeze into your arm, not into your hands. Throw away tissues after wiping your nose or covering a cough, and wash your hands. • Clean your hands: Using soap and warm water, wash your hands thoroughly and often, including after coughing, sneezing, using tissues or the washroom, and before
eating or preparing foods. Alcohol-based hand rub or sanitizer can also be helpful if hands are not visibly soiled. Make a point of keeping hands and fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth. • Stay home when sick: If you have symptoms of influenza, including fever, cough, headache and extreme tiredness, stay home from work, school, daycare, or any social function. Please also refrain from visiting family, friends or loved ones in hospi-

Sharing 64 years of love and marriage

In celebration of Valentine’s Day today, inside Drumheller is profiling Benth and Clara Poulsen, sweethearts for 64 years on March 29. When you first meet Clara, 85, and Benth, 84, you might think “what a cute couple.” Spend a little time with them, and
you’ll see the love, deep fondness and affection they have for each other. The Poulsens both have a great sense of humour, and Benth often has a straight face when he teases Clara. She is eleven months older than Benth, and he quips “That’s the first trouble we had to get used to.” The two met when they
were young children, attending Sunday School at the same church, then junior U.F.A. at the same time, although they attended different schools. - Clara at Blue Spring outside of Wayne and Benth at Beynon. “The minute I woke up and had a look at her, that was it for me,” says Benth. They both laugh and Clara tells him he’s full of b.s. Clara’s not sure when she and Benth became best friends - “It happened slowly, over time.” They each completed Grade 9, then took a year off, then attended Olds School of Agriculture, with Clara in her second

In honour of Valentine’s Day, inSide Drumheller spoke with sweethearts Savannah Kohlenberg, 21, and Ryan Coles, 24, who have been a couple three years last October and were recently engaged. They were aware of each other, had nodded in passing, but hadn’t really spoke to each other. That changed when Savannah and Ryan were both working at Drumheller Co-op. Savannah, a grocery cashier, went over to the gas bar to buy her first scratch n’ win lottery ticket. She tells the story: “Ryan sold it to me, and I told him it better be a winner, and it so happens, it was - I won ten bucks. So I kept five
and gave five to him.” “Really, I don’t remember that,” Ryan chimes in. “I’m not surprised,” is Savannah’s reply. Family and friends tell them they already act like a married couple - coordinating schedules, respecting personal space, and asking each other’s opinion on things. Savannah said it was when Ryan was at her Mom’s Thanksgiving dinner in 2010 that they officially became a couple - her older sister stated she liked her boyfriend, so Savannah said to Ryan, “Okay, you’re my boyfriend now.” The two had been hanging out for a few months before that as friends. They both remember their first outing with a safety-net friend along
because they were both so nervous. Ryan recalls their first date - “It was awkward, and Savannah broke the ice. I think she said ‘I gotta belch’, something like that.” Each remembers the fact they had brownies and ice cream for dessert, and they each get just a little bit more emotional when they’re talking about the day they became engaged. December 28th, 2013. They had Christmas with Ryan’s family in Drumheller, then travelled to Saskatoon for their second Christmas with Savannah’s family. Ryan preferred to ask Savannah to marry him in front of her family, because it would mean a lot more to her. Savannah knew he had the ring - she’d seen the jewellery box in a hotel safe when they were on a trip - but Ryan was waiting for the right time to propose. “It was a shock that he did it in front of my family. I cried. I was so choked up, I almost couldn’t speak,” describes Savannah. The two moved in together last year and have since acquired two cats (Savannah’s idea), although they plan on waiting awhile to start a family. Savannah smiles - “Our babies are our kitties.” The couple plans to be married in two years, after Savannah finishes Therapeutic Recreation at school through the University of Lethbridge’s e-campus.

remember?” Benth teases. He thinks it was the Silver Spike Bungalow. The couple spent a night at his parents farm, then drove out to Wintering Hills, where they farmed and raised four children. “What are you answering yes to?” Benth asks. “Did we have children?” Clara replies. “I think we did, yeah,” Benth answers, not quite smiling.
The pair moved into Sunshine Lodge a few years ago. “I believe it still is a good marriage,” Clara says. “I think we did what came naturally.” Benth replies “Oh is that what it was?” Clara says the last time they went back to their old house, only the metal stairs that Benth made remained. “He was a great welder.”

thought Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist Here is a fool-proof recipe for roast beef that I heard about a lot, and finally got a chance to try it out just recently. It was a huge success - I will use this method from now on. I’m sure it’s “old hat” to some people, but I will share it for those who like a good roast dinner, but never have the best of luck with it turning out just right. When I made this, I used a four-bone prime rib, but other cuts work fine. You may have to get out the calculator for this, but the method is a simple one. You can season the roast however you normally do. (I like to make slits and stuff some garlic pieces into it.) Directions Take the meat out to bring to room temperature before roasting. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Make sure it fully reaches 500 before the roast goes in. Leave the roast in for 5 minutes per pound. (here’s where you may bring out the calculator). When that time has passed, turn off the oven. Do not open the door! Now, walk away. Leave the meat in the oven for two hours. This is a good opportunity to prepare the rest of the meal, or just take a break! When the 2 hours is up, bring the meat out, tent with foil and let it sit for up to half an hour. I inserted a meat thermometer and watched until it was the desired preference (medium rare for us). Remember, the temperature is going to rise as it sits, so don’t be tempted to stick it back into the oven if you don’t think it’s ready. One of our guests preferred well-done meat. I carved his from the outside and it was perfect. This could be a nice Valentine’s meal, giving you time to relax and share some special time with your special val-
entine or guests. I wouldn’t use a small roast just for two people; I suggest a bit larger and have some leftovers for the next day. An appetizing accompaniment for this meal would be a nice spinach salad. I have done so many variations on spinach salads - you can add such an array of ingredients, the possibilities seem endless. I try to add some type of nuts or sunflower seeds, a dried or fresh fruit, a tangy cheese such as feta, goat or blue and some chopped onion. A nice balsamic dressing always works, as does a citrus one. I just came across one that mixes 2 Tbsp. raspberry jam with 2 Tbsp. red wine vinegar and 1/3 cup oil. To round off this meal, try some rich, loaded mashed potatoes: Mash your potatoes (this recipe is for 9 medium) with 1 block of softened cream cheese, 1 cup sour cream, ½ cup butter, ¼ cup milk. Then, stir in 1 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese, and 1 ½ cups shredded Jack cheese. Add ½ pound bacon that is cooked and crumbled, 4 chopped green onions and ½ tsp garlic powder. To make this an easy meal, prepare a day in advance, refrigerate the potato mixture and cook in a greased slow cooker - on low for about 3-4 hours. This recipe serves about 10 people – you may need to cut it in half. Enjoy all those who are close to your heart this Valentine’s day!

Thinking about RRSP’s? March 3, 2014 is the deadline for contributing to an RRSP for the 2013 tax year.
An RRSP is a retirement savings plan that you establish, that we register, and to which you or your spouse or common-law partner contribute. Deductible RRSP contributions can be used to reduce your tax. Any income you earn in the RRSP is usually exempt from tax as long as the funds remain in the plan; you generally have to pay tax when you receive payments from the plan. Setting up an RRSP You set up a registered retirement savings plan through a financial institution such as a bank, credit union, trust or insurance company. Your financial institution will advise you on the types of RRSP and the investments they can contain. You may want to set up a spousal or common-law partner RRSP. This type of plan can help ensure that retirement income is more evenly split between both of you. The benefit is greatest if a higher-income spouse or common-law partner contributes to an RRSP for a lower-income spouse or common-law partner. The contributor receives the short term benefit of the tax
deduction for the contributions, while the annuitant, who is likely to be in a lower tax bracket during retirement, receives the income and reports it on his or her income tax and benefits return. You may want to set up a self-directed RRSP if you prefer to build and manage your own investment portfolio by buying and selling a variety of different types of investments. For more information on eligible investments, see Self-directed RRSPs. If you are considering this type of RRSP, be sure to consult with your financial institution. You make your RRSP contributions directly to the RRSP issuer. Minor hockey nears end of regular season Drumheller Minor Hockey teams put in a busy weekend as they head towards the end of the regular season. The Yavis Atom Raptors played two games against Cochrane, winning one and losing one. In the ďŹ rst game, the team was down late in

back with a 4 -2 win against Strathmore Saturday. Coach Hodgson reports the team had a strong game on Sunday, winning over Medicine Hat 11 to 4. The Bertram Drilling/ Sports Room Midgets won both their weekend games - 10 to 1 over Foothills and 6 to 3 over Cremona. Coach Jamie O’Brien likes the way the team has been playing, saying the team skated smart and have really been moving the puck well. It’s nice to see everything start to come together, he adds.
The Freson Bros Tykes had a weekend tournament in Delia, with their ďŹ rst game ending in a 2-2 tie. Coach Dennis Olsen thought the kids worked hard, “The kids played really well, they skated hard and battled for the puck, it was an excellent game.â€? The Tykes fell behind in their second game, but Olsen says they came out in the last period and played a lot better, and the kids all came home with a medal and had a great time.

James, as NGC head coach for the past two years, believes the team’s dedication to both their on-ice training and dry land practice, as well as a total group contribution, makes a season like this possible. “Other coaches, and the parents - everyone has to get together. he adds. Right now the NGC Raptors are focused on the Zone 6 Championship against Airdrie. The ďŹ rst game is played February 22 in Airdrie and the second game is February 25 at Drumheller’s Memorial Arena. The Raptors play two regular season games this weekend at the Drumheller Memorial Arena - 9 am Saturday versus RMAA and 1 pm Sunday versus Medicine Hat.
