Businesses throughout Drumheller may soon see an end to their annual business tax. At their meeting on January 14, Drumheller Town Council defeated a motion to established the business tax rate for 2013 and directed administration to come up with alternatives to generate the same amount of revenue. The proposal presented at the February 11 meeting of Town Council was to replace the business tax by collecting the same revenue from the non-residential property tax. In eect, the Town would be revenue neutral with the change. “This seems to be just a change in mechanism from something archaic to one that is more common. With things being revenue neutral, it’s quite likely in many cases, business owners will still be paying a similar amount, it’ll just reach them in a dierent way,â€? said Councillor Andrew
Berdahl. The decision to seek alternatives to replace the business tax was made after surveying other communities and ďŹ nding none subscribed to the tax. In addition, the Town is aiming to eliminate noncompliance in regards to the tax. “We did a poll of any community our size or larger and we found Calgary is phasing out their business tax, Edmonton and Red Deer have a section which is for revitalization of the business areas. No other communities our size have a business tax,â€? said Bill Wul, acting director of Corporate Services. “Currently, the business owner is getting charged the value of the business tax. However, there is $23,000 (27 per cent noncompliance) outstanding that we cannot collect, because the buildings aren’t owner occupied and we can’t apply the outstanding tax to them.â€? Councillor Jay Garbutt agreed it was time to make the change. “With 27 per cent non-

building it occupied. A motion to direct administration to collect the revenue through the non-residential assessment was passed 5-1 by Council, with Councillor Lisa Hansen-Zacharuk opposed.

Complaints have been received associated to congested traffic issues at St. Anthony’s School. It is unfortunate that the school could not have been placed on the property where it was initially planned. As we cannot move the school, we need to find a solution. With that being stated, the cause of this congestion is parents and guardians attending to the school approximately 20 minutes before school gets released. This, in turn, is causing parents to block the access road on to school property. Bus drivers are complaining that it is making it difficult for them to see, thus putting busses and students at risk. Persons attempting
to get to Quadrock Trucking and Excavating are being blocked off, thus interfering with that business as well. There is a very simple solution. Parents and guardians, please do not attend to the school until after busses have left, roughly 3:20 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 12:20 p.m. on Friday. If you need to pick up your child for an appointment, then make arrangements to pick the child up before 3:00 p.m. We also ask parents and guardians if you cannot pull into the pick up area, then keep moving down the road. Drumheller RCMP members will be attending the school to keep vehicles from stopping on the road or on the approach. RCMP members will be sending any vehicle

Cuts for Cancer came through again and is approaching its goal of $30,000 this year. The eighth annual event went Sunday, February 3, with supporters streaming through the door at the Chop Shop to get their hair cut for a good cause. Cathy Morse, founder of the event, conďŹ rmed that so far, they have raised $25,825.11 and it
is still growing. “We will be accepting donations until February 28,� said an elated Morse. This year saw support from a variety of individuals, all who have seen their lives touched in different ways by cancer. Walter Albrecht has participated in the event every year since its inception and this year raised $2,477. Zach Bernard saw not only his hair and moustache shorn, but also his eyebrows. For this he brought
in $1,199.50. Spencer Fournier, who sacriďŹ ced his trademark mullet, raised $810, as did Justin Gillis. Members of the Drumheller Titans and the Drumheller Dragons were at the Chop Shop on Sunday to show support and raise funds. This year sta at WHIFS, in support of a former colleague, took donations at the restaurant and also contributed their tips from Sunday and raised an additional $925.
Many more went under the razor for the cause. The funds this year are going to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation to help top up a fund that supports patients and their families as they undergo treatment at the Drumheller Cancer Centre. Morse says there are three more individuals who are collecting pledges and will see their hair shorn later this month.

BUCHTA John Andrew John peacefully passed away with family at his side on February 10, 2013. John is survived by; four cousins: Irene, Millie, Anne and Molly. He was predeceased by; his father, George in 2003, his mother Mary in 1985, and his older brother Martin in 1987. John was born in Drumheller, Alberta. He was actively involved in promoting the Progressive Conservative Party and attending numerous political events. John enjoyed travelling through Europe bringing back many memories to share with family and friends alike. John attended Olds College where he successfully completed the Heavy Duty Mechanic program, as well as obtaining a degree in Agricultural Studies. John put his skills to use on the family farm where he was born and resided at. John’s passion of cattle resulted in him acquiring 25 head which he lovingly referred to as his kids. John’s strong work ethics demanded numerous hours to work the farm which he accomplished throughout his life, however in his personal time he enjoyed being in the presence of good company and always seemed to be smiling. John was a very polite and kind individual, whom if you were lucky enough to have him as a friend, you were truly blessed. In a world where connecting can be done in the blink of an eye, it can also serve to pull people further apart. The Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) in the Drumheller area are hoping to change that this Family Day, Monday, February 18, with their campaign “Disconnect to connect.” The idea is for families to spend some time together during the day doing activities that do not require electricity, such as watching television or playing video games. There are innumerable activities for a family unplugged. For example, families can go outside for a walk, go skating, or tobogganing. Indoors, families can play a board game, read together, or play
music. Various attractions in the area are also available. The Badlands Community Facility will have an inflatable obstacle course throughout the day, Morrin and Delia Arenas will have free public skating from 1 to 4 p.m., the Drumheller Arena will have free public skating from 1:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Aquaplex is having a toonie swim from 1:30 to 4 p.m., and the Royal Tyrrell Museum will have free admission. Unplugging from technology has its benefits. Research suggests 73 per cent of kids would rather play with their parents than watch TV or use the internet. Teens having more than three family dinners per week are more likely to get better grades. Residents in connected
neighbourhoods have a greater quality of life. Lastly, three factors for healthy physical and psychological child development are movement, touch, and connection to other humans. Residents who un-

With only three weeks left in the AJHL regular season, the Dragons are ensuring they will have a good position for this season’s playos. Over the past week, the Dragons have put together a couple wins. On Wednesday, February 6, the Dragons travelled to Canmore to face the Eagles in their nest. Recently, the Eagles had been gaining on the Dragons in the standings. The Dragons clipped the wings of the Eagles with a decisive 5-0 victory. The Dragons were in control from the ďŹ rst puck drop. Cavin Leth got the Dragons on the scoreboard four minutes into the ďŹ rst period. However, it wasn’t until the second period when the Dragons put the game out of reach. Bryton Mills scored backto-back in the ďŹ rst ďŹ ve and a half minutes of the second. Mitchell Cook followed up with another goal before the period was out. In the last minute
and a half, Ryan Bloom racked the Dragons ďŹ fth goal while on the power play. Throughout the game, Dragons goalie Adam Beukeboom was a brick wall in net and earned his second shut-out of the season. The Dragons then had several days o. On Saturday, they returned home to face the Grande Prairie Storm. The game was close, but the Dragons weathered the Storm, winning by a close 3-2 in a shootout. Late in the ďŹ rst, Mitchell Gartner gave the Dragons a 1-0 lead. It proved to be short-lived. The Storm struck fast in the ďŹ rst 13 seconds of the second period and tied the game at one apiece. The two teams were deadlocked until the last ďŹ ve minutes of the third when the Storm took a 2-1 lead. The Dragons fought hard and eventually cracked the solid Storm defence and tied the game up with just over two minutes to go. The game then went into a scoreless overtime period and then a shootout.
Both goalies were solid in net. Each team’s ďŹ rst three shooters went scoreless. Brett Printz, the fourth shooter for the Storm, couldn’t get the puck by Beukeboom. The Dragons then sent out team points leader Ryan Bloom, who stued the puck into the back of the net for another Dragons victory. The Dragons were given little time to rest and had to face a well-rested Calgary Mustangs team the following afternoon. The Mustangs previous game was the prior Tuesday. The Dragons managed to keep up the pressure in the oensive zone, shooting 42 shots to the Mustangs 27, but suffered defensive breakdowns in their own end. In addition, the Dragons power play ďŹ zzled, going scoreless in eight opportunities. The ďŹ rst two periods saw the two teams trading goals. Tyler Kerner scored twice in the ďŹ rst and Stepehen Doane gave the Dragons their third goal in the second. By the second intermission the game was locked in a 3-3 tie.

After a thrilling Wednesday night game, the Drumheller Minor Hockey Midget Raptors are heading to provincials at the end of March. The 6-1 win over the Kneehill Chiefs solidiďŹ ed a spot for the Raptors in Coaldale to battle for the title of provincial champions in the Midget C division. The battle for zones began on February 7 in Three Hills. The Chiefs took the game 2-1. To advance to provincials, the Raptors would have to win
on Wednesday by at least two goals, as provincial playdowns are decided by who can score the most goals in two games. The Raptors, undaunted, brought their best game. Right from the get go, they were in control and rapidly gained the lead. They also had some solid goaltending from Chase Kostelecky and later Liam Hilchey. “It’s a pretty awesome feeling. The boys played hard and worked hard all night. The ďŹ rst two periods we took it to them and everyone chipped in,â€? said head coach Tom
Fournier. This will be the Midget Raptors second berth at provincials in as many years. “Some of these kids were there last year and for others, this will be their ďŹ rst time. It’s an awesome experience being there. Let’s hope we can carry things on to provincials and league championships,â€? said Fournier. Provincials will be held from March 21 to 24 in Coaldale. Until then, the Raptors have a busy league schedule. They are currently in a ďŹ ve way tie for ďŹ rst in their league.
