Red Sochi Cup

(l-r) Keith Lee and Shelley Hird look on as Stacey LeBlanc, with nerf gun in hand, target shoots a red solo cup in the biathalon event Thursday, February 20 at the Drumheller Health Centre staff Olympics. During the Sochi Olympics the hospital staff were divided into eight countries and six events, including Wii ski jumping, two man bobsled (on a stretcher), curling (shuffleboard), and prairie skiing (three people’s feet roped onto two two-by-fours). In the 2014 Winter Olympics, Canadians have high hopes for the men’s hockey team after the women’s team came from a 2-0 deficit to win the gold medal in overtime. inSide photo Michele Scott

OPINION Have your say in selecting next dino installation Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Dino Arts Committee is heading into the new year with new ideas and is asking residents for their vision of the next dinosaur to take up residence in the valley. The committee has made an incredible impact on the valley acting as guardians of the dozens of dinosaur statues

that add a unique flavor to the valley. They have also been the driving force to bring new statues including the motorcycling dinosaur on Railway Avenue and before that the dinosaur bench at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Centre Street. The committee is planning a new installation and is asking residents for their input. They have selected three designs for their next

installation and have posed an online survey for residents to select which design they prefer. “The survey will be left open for the next 3 weeks after which time we will pick the winner with the most votes,” said John Shoff of the Dino Art Committee To complete the survey, go to https://www. surveymonkey.com/s/ CKFD33X

Editor inSide Drumheller Dear Editor; When Alison Redford was running for office you asked her if there was a chance of getting Highway 575 completed. Her answer, if I remember correctly, was “Yes.” We all know about floods etc. being a priority, but after three generations of paying taxes, we are still waiting for the road to be complet-

Pat O’Connor-Browne “I think they’re doing a good job. They (judges) were really tough on figure skating scoring.”

ed. The federal government has announced they have some taxpayers money to spend on infrastructure. Do you think that it’s now our turn since the town has done their part by supplying the land and installing water, sewer and street lights, etc.? All we need is some effective leadership from the town. Yours truly, Cliff Johnson Diane Winkler

Editor’s note: You have a good memory Cliff, and what you say is quite true. If this editor had held his breath waiting for government promises to come true, he’d be long gone by now. One of the best ones we recall, was covering the reconstruction of Highway 9 West, that, according to those officials in attendance at the old Churchill School one day in 1995, was to take place over three years. In actual fact, it took 15 years to complete. Don’t think there is enough life left in this body for another one of those promises.

Council Notes From the regular meeting of Committee of the Whole February 18, 2014 Chris Curtis of Travel Drumheller (Drumheller's Destination Marketing Office) presented to Mayor & Council a report from their strategic direction setting workshop facilitated by Twist Marketing of Calgary. Out of the workshop the DMO's priorities were narrowed to three: first - develop a community and destination brand (who we are - make people think of Drumheller); secondly - develop sustainable funding model (could be service based, voluntary by stakeholders) and third - community awareness campaign on benefits of tourism (hearts and minds campaign). Travel Drumheller has met with various stakeholders and suggests a forum may be the next step to generate more ideas on what they could do. Question and answers with Mayor and Council followed regarding the report. Director of Community Services Paul Salvatore says his department is aware of how the funding model (for DMO) is structured in other communities (such as Banff), and their department could work on modelling if it is something Council wishes. He also noted that as mentioned in the town's Tourism Master Plan 2011, the town could do a more robust job of data collection (finding out who visits Drumheller, how long they stay, where they go, etc.) Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk presented an update on the Drumheller Stampede and Agricultural Society, which held their Annual General Meeting in December. Through a casino fundraiser, the society now has ten thousand dollars in the bank. She mentioned a Mud & Tape Work Bee for the Ag Society for March 4th, volunteers would be greatly appreciated. •••••• Councillor Hansen-Zacharuk noted herself and Councillor McMillan attended an Emergency Response Course in Chestermere. The course outlined the roles of councillors during an emergency. She noted as well that she attended an Economic Development Course in Airdrie, and the facilitator is willing to come and speak to Council. •••••• The Council Meeting for Monday, February 24, 2014 is cancelled.

???DID YOU KNOW??? ” that the town traffic bylaw only allows a vehicle to be parked on a town street without moving for 72 hours? In all areas of town there are vehicles that have been left parked for weeks, some longer as they have snow accumulation around them that is indicative of having been parked in a location possibly since the start of winter. If a vehicle is parked in excess of 72 hours or is a hazard bylaw enforcement has the authority to tow that vehicle under the bylaw. Please be considerate and if you have a vehicle that has been parked in violation of the bylaw please move that vehicle. If anyone wishes to discuss this call Greg Peters at town hall at 823-1363.

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW????? Bylaw members have received several complaints recently of feral cats in all parts of town. Donna LeBLANC Age: 57 Occupation: Lab Assistant What do most enjoy about your work? The interaction with people. How did you become a lab assistant? I worked on the ambulance as an EMT for 16 years, and I wanted to remain in the medical field, so I challenged the medical exam for lab assistant and have been doing this for 20 years. How long have you lived in the valley? 57 years. What is your favourite thing about living here? I would call it the small community togetherness - atmosphere. The friendliness of people, good place to raise your family. How big is your family? I raised five kids here, and I have six grandchildren (one in Calgary, the rest here.) Is there anything you’d change here? Probably more stores to shop in (bed & bath and kids clothing stores), and those unique little shops. What are your favourite things to do here?

We enjoyed watching the kids play baseball and hockey, now we’re watching the grandchildren. Do you have any hobbies? Fishing at Crawling Valley or here on the Red Deer River; Gardening (flowers). Sweat peas are my favourite. What flowers are the hardest to grow here? I haven’t had much luck with roses. Where I live, I can’t grow them. What is the biggest change you’ve seen in Drumheller? There’s the growth of the place, and the thing I wish was still here was by Shoppers Drug Mart - the old train station and park there. What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? My Dad, Jack Durnie, ran Prehistoric Park with Tig Seland. When it closed, the dinosaurs were placed all over town. There was a baby brontosaurus - he’s my favourite. Final thoughts? Always be compassionate.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
