Wildrose seniors tour to stop in Drumheller Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Albertans are being asked to voice their concerns regarding seniors care in the province. The Wildrose party has offcially kicked-off its province-wide seniors tour, where opposition Seniors Critic Kerry Towle will consult with stakeholders in 23 communities. One of the communities being asked for input is Drumheller. A meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Badlands Community Facility. “We’re really looking forward to this. It’s going to be an informal discussion with seniors stakeholders, such as seniors, board members, Town Council, and the public at large,” said Rick Strankman, MLA for Drumheller-Stettler. The tour is meant to learn more about the range of issues facing seniors care in Alberta, including problems faced by seniors in accessing

government services. “It’s a general meeting. Any concerns they have will be brought to the meetings. I’m sure as they go through the meetings in other communities, more issues will come up,” said Strankman. Towles will also tour both Sunshine and Hillview Lodges. For stakeholders in Drumheller, it’s a chance to voice their concerns. “There is an issue with the Lodge Assistance Program (LAP) grant. From our perspective, it hasn’t really kept up with the times. It seems like we have more and more expenses and the LAP grant doesn’t seem to be compensating enough,” said Tom Zariski, Town Councillor and Vice Chair of the Drumheller and District Seniors Foundation. “We’re also looking at seniors accommodation. With more and more seniors, we need more accommodation, but there isn’t enough infrastructure money to keep up with the need.”

New residents get connected with community groups Moving to a new town can be a daunting experience for anyone. The difficulty of leaving family and friends behind is coupled with the challenges of fitting in to a

new town. For relative newcomer Izzy O’Rourke it can be a challenge, but well worth the effort. “It’s sort of challenging based on my personality, because I’m not very outgoing. Once you do go out to something,

people are very friendly,” said O’Rourke. O’Rourke, a soon to be a stay-at-home mom, moved to Drumheller last August with her husband Jon and is currently waiting for their first child. For her, getting into the community

was as simple as going out to events and getting involved in community groups.

Seniors trek to Mexico in walking program Michael James | inSide Drumheller

How long would it take to walk to Mexico? Seniors in Drumheller have just answered that question; six weeks. Seniors across Drumheller were challenged to walk and record how many steps they took over six weeks. The numbers were then tallied and, when converted, took them to Mexico. The route taken goes from Drumheller to Vancouver and then down through the western United States and into Mexico. In total, they have walked over 6 million steps, or 4,800 kilometres combined. “They did great. I could

not believe how far some of them have walked. Our original goal was to walk, collectively to Vancouver. After the ďŹ rst week, we were already almost in Vancouver, so we kept on walking. We are now past San Diego and into Mexico,â€? said Rose Poulsen, Seniors Coordinator for the Town of Drumheller. To help record how many steps they took, seniors were given pedometers, courtesy of Alberta Health Services. Roughly 50 seniors signed up. In addition to their regular walks, they also met every Monday at the Badlands Community Facility (BCF) to walk together. There, they

walked, stretched, and learned about the beneďŹ ts of walking and staying active. “It can be a free and really easy way to get some activity in each day. The goal is to aim for 10,000 steps per day. Having a pedometer really makes you aware how little you moved during the day. It’s about getting as many steps in per day,â€? said Poulsen. To celebrate their achievement, the walkers will be holding a wrap-up party. “We’re going to have a bit of a wrap-up get together and let everyone know how we did. We were thinking, because we’ll be in Mexico, to add a bit of air to our celebrations,â€? said Poulsen. The wrap-up takes place on Monday, February 25, at 9 a.m.

First Morgan Jayne Project Baby Shower approaches goal Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The Morgan Jayne Project’s success can be measured in lives saved, however the work doesn’t stop. The project has been a great part of Familias Saludables in the Roatan, progressing into its fourth year of zero transmission of AIDS. This is well ahead of the United Nation’s mandate to achieve this by 2015. Key to this has simply been infant formula, and the demand is not letting up. As a novel approach to continue the support to provide infant formula, the ďŹ rst an-

nual Morgan Jayne Project’s Baby Shower was launched and already it is working towards its goal. Founder of the project, Fred Makowecki, said the baby shower idea was from Cindy Thomas and it has a goal to collect 50 cans of powdered formula. Drumheller McDonald’s is showing its support, and for a donation dropped o at Image Crafters or Western Chev, supporters will receive a coupon for a coee and muďŹƒn from McDonald’s. The Morgan Jayne Project is also hoping to cash in on those wanting to rid of their

drawers and piggy banks of pennies. Quite simply to the project, “Cents Save Lives, and they have been collecting pennies to buy formula for children served by the Morgan Jayne Project. Literally, pounds of pennies have been donated, and more are welcome at Image

Crafters. While the basis of the Morgan Jayne Project continues to be infant formula, the project has grown with the children it has saved. With the new year comes school and supporters of the project also signed on to support the children wanting to go to school.

HAPPENINGS East Coulee artist completes Centennial mural at Three Hills School 8 - Friday, February 22, 2013

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

An East Coulee artist has left her mark on another school in the area, and this time it is to celebrate the centennial of Three Hills. Janet Grabner of Carocol Clay Studio has completed a mosaic mural at Three Hills School to celebrate 100 years of the town. This was her third and largest installation yet, spanning 12 feet by 8 feet. “It is the biggest I have done so far,” said Grabner, and they are very happy with it.” Grabner completed a mural at Greentree School a few years ago. It was success and is enjoyed daily by staff and students. It has also been noticed by others in the school division. Last year she was commissioned to do her second installation

at Westmount School in Strathmore and then this one in Three Hills. She said teacher Carmen Reece thought of the mural for Three Hills. “She saw my other murals and thought the school could use something for the centennial,” said Grabner. “She wanted an image of the old school house, the old tree that stood in the yard, and the three hills, and said I could go from there.” While Grabner is commissioned to do the artwork, it is a collective effort. She supplies students and staff with the tiles—in this case, 500—and they decorate them how they see fit. She takes the tiles back to her studio in East Coulee where she and her husband and artist John Dahm glaze and fire the tiles. The tiles are then brought back to the school where they are

assembled into the installation. This project took her about month to complete. While it is laborious, with experience comes efficiency. She has learned to build these latest installations much quicker than her original piece. Grabner says she enjoys this type of project, taking her out of the studio and into the public. This was the first mural she has done at a school with high school aged kids, and she felt it was important for them to see her working. “I told the kids when I made the tiles that I got hooked doing art in high school. Nobody told me I could make a living as an artist, as a kid I had to figure that out myself. So I was nice for them to see that it is possible.” She has been talking with another school that is interested in one of

Chop Shop collecting pony tails for local woman Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Last week a local woman went under the scissors for a new look, and even more importantly, to give another person a new look. It has been about 14 years since Brendalee Colley had any substantial haircut besides a trim. While she is 50 years old, Colley has nary a strand of grey in the more than a foot of hair. She wanted to get a “pixie” hair cut, while at the same time

support making a wig for someone in need. “I’m doing this because I have seen people fighting cancer,” said Colley. It turns out the need isn’t so far away. Colley learned from Cathy Morse at the Chop Shop that there indeed is a need, and it is local. Morse has been collecting hair for a local 27-year-old woman who has Alopecia totalis. This condition is believed to be autoimmune in nature and is quite simply a total loss of hair on the head.

Her condition began with isolated bald spots but soon they became larger. Today she has sparse wisps of hair. While she has tried treatment, often it has burned her scalp causing great pain. The Chop Shop has begun to collect hair for the

woman and has a few donations, including Colley’s hair, which under the skillful hands of Ayrianna Jacques came off on February 8. For information on donating hair for this project, contact the Chop Shop at 403-823-2466.

MATLOCK Jo Anne Thelma With heavy hearts, Jo Anne Thelma Matlock of Drumheller, mother of Jolene Crone and Pamela Wharf passed away peacefully on February 19, 2013 at the age of 66 years. Three Hills RCMP seize half pound of marijuana Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller man has been charged with possession of marijuana, after Three Hills RCMP reported a sizable seizure near Elnora. On Monday, February

11 at about 10:30 p.m. members of the Three Hills RCMP were performing check stops on Highway 21 near Elnora when a southbound 2003 Ford Focus entered the check stop. The investigating of-

ficer reported noticing the smell of marijuana, and commenced an investigation. The driver was arrested and a search of the vehicle revealed what appeared to be a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia in the cabin of the car. A search of the trunk revealed a package of what appeared to be marijuana. It weighed 239 grams and could have a street value of $2,400. A Drumheller man, 26, is facing one count of possession of marijuana over 30 grams. He was issued a 24-hour suspension for driving

under the influence of a drug and his vehicle was seized and towed.

The male was released from custody on a promise to appear and is slat-

ed to appear in provincial court in Drumheller on April 3.

court in Drumheller on Wednesday, February 6. He had previously pleaded guilty to two charges of having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. Berreth was pulled over on July 16, 2011 after a member of the Three Hills RCMP observed him leaving a parking spot abruptly. He was observed to have smelled of liquor and a breath sample confirmed that he had 230 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood in his system. The next day Berreth was tracked down after a civilian complaint. This time a sample indicated 240 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. He has a prior impaired conviction dating back to 2005. The crown prosecutor filed notice that it would

be seeking incarceration and stated its position that 30-60 days in jail was appropriate. Hugh Sommerville, defense for Berreth, told the court that Berreth recognizes he is an alcoholic and has sought treatment. He has been sober since the fall of 2011. He understands he must continue his treatment and that he is suitable for a curative medical discharge under section 255 (5). This section allows the court to consider discharging persons, with a probation order, if it is demonstrated there is the need for curative treatment and it would not be contrary to public interest. Berreth was granted the curative discharge with an 18-month probation order.

An inmate at the Drumheller Institution will be serving six more months after pleading guilty to assault causing bodily harm. Jason Sinclair appeared in provincial court in Drumheller. He pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm. The court heard how on October 12 of last year at about 10:30 a.m. he was in the institution’s courtyard and was engaged in an argument with another inmate. It escalated and Sinclair punched the other man three times, fracturing his jaw. Sinclair was already serving a 26-month sentence for crimes that included violence. He was sentenced to six months consecutive to his current sentence.

Sabres closing out season strong Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The end of the season is approaching for the St. Anthony’s senior boys Sabres basketball team and they are hitting their stride. The Sabres began last week on a high with a win over DVSS, and then on Wednesday they stood strong versus Three Hills. Monday, February 11, the Sabres hosted DVSS. Earlier this season the two teams met in league play, and without St. Anthony’s leading scorer Tanner Borowicz, DVSS cruised to an easy win. This time, the Dynos’ roster has been depleted recently, and the Sabres dominated with their size and played a solid game from beginning to end, winning 54-39. Coach Dan Patterson is proud of how his team played, and said the game was a confidence booster. While both teams come out swinging for these cross-town games, he says there isn’t really much of a rivalry, considering this was the first time in over a decade the Sabres have been able win at the senior level. The Sabres’ momentum continued to Wednesday, February 13, where they travelled to Three Hills. Again, the Sabres dominated as Tanner Borowicz left with game with 38 points and 15 rebounds. Nathan Comstock was also in double figures with 15 points and 16 boards, Jakub St. Jean had 10 points. Dynos take second Battle of Drumheller against Sabres Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Valley Secondary School senior girls Dynos came away with another win in the Battle of Drumheller, winning over the St. Anthony’s School Sabres. The two had met prior to the Christmas break, where the Dynos took a decisive win. In their second meeting the Dynos repeated by taking a large lead early in the game and not letting go. The Sabres, still recovering from injuries, had to field a small roster and were subsequently left tired. Prior to the game, the Dynos were coming off a successful tournament in Stettler on the weekend of February 9. “The tournament was good. We played Eck-

ville first and won 64-16. Then we played Stettler and lost 52-50 which was a hard loss because we were the two best teams at the tournament and weren’t going to the final. Then we played Koinonia Christian school from Red Deer and won 80-37,” said Jennifer Raugust, head coach of the Dynos. However, the team was dealt a crippling blow during the tournament. Two players were injured, one of whom had her season ended. Both teams had a break this week, but will be returning to action on Monday. The Sabres will be hosting the Trochu Blue Jays and the Dynos the Three Hills Chiefs. Both games start at 5:15 p.m. The Dynos are also looking ahead to provincials.

“The girls have been working hard to achieve our goal of getting to provincials. I believe in the girls and really think that our goal is achiev-

able,” said Raugust. “As long as we can maintain our composure and rise to the occasion in tough games I know we can get there.”

Brooks Bandits burglarize Dragons’ den Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Memorial Arena was robbed Wednesday night when the Brooks Bandits came to town and stole a 5-3 win over the Dragons. The Dragons were on their heels for the ďŹ rst several minutes of the game. The Bandits were able to keep the Dragons

caged in their own end. When the Dragons regained their composure, they managed to get a few chances in the Bandits end. However, the momentum early on was clearly in the Bandits favour, especially after they scored ďŹ rst at 4:19 into the game. The Dragons fought back and were generat-

ing plenty of chances, including a wide open net shot by Mitchell Cook in front of the net. Bandits goalie, Michael Fredrick, out of position, managed to dive and make the glove save, robbing Cook of the Dragons ďŹ rst goal. The Bandits struck again at 15:38 into the ďŹ rst for a 2-0 lead. The Dragons came back just over a minute later when Stephen Doane, behind the Bandits net, passed out front to Hunter Mills, who in turn sent the puck back to Mitchell Gartner at the blue line. Gartner let loose with a blistering shot, that went through traďŹƒc to ďŹ nd the back of the net. Whatever momentum was generated oensively was lost in the Dragons defence. With less than a minute left in the ďŹ rst, the Bandits took advantage of some defensive breakdowns in the Dragons end. Another Drumheller team is heading to the provincials after a convincing win in the zone Championships. The Bantam Raptors hosted Canmore in Game 2 of the total points series on Saturday, February 16 at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. The teams were tied at three apiece coming out of their ďŹ rst game. It didn’t take long for Drumheller to exert its dominance and take a 1-0 lead. Canmore tied it up for a

spell, but the Raptors took the lead and continued to build to a 4-1 victory. This game earned the Raptors the Zone Six Championship and a spot at the provincial tournament. This year the bantams play o at Forestburg from March 14-17. This is the second Drumheller team this week to earn a spot at provincials. Last week, inSide Drumheller reported that on Wednesday, February 13 the Midget Raptors also won the zone championship.
