It was a close call for Dorothy resident Larry Smith. He escaped his house after a neighbour rushed over to warn him that the roof was on fire. Residents of Dorothy were engulfed in a haze of smoke from the blaze, which started at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22. The home, on the western outskirts of Dorothy, was being rented by Smith. Smith had been relaxing inside his home, when he heard a knock at the door. His neighbours, having seen the fire from their homes had come to see if Smith was alright and to pull him out of danger. “I was worried, because his vehicles were home. If he was inside he would’ve come and got us,” said Christina Pugh, one of the neighbours who went to rescue Smith. “I didn’t know if he was sleeping or what was happening.” Thanks to the intervention of his neighbours Smith escaped unharmed, though he had to stand outside and

Dear Editor, As we are working on issuing official receipts in time for the tax deadline, we are once again overwhelmed by the amazing generosity of so many in our community. We feel we can never say THANK YOU enough because we really could not do all we do without so many supporters. Christmas is not the only time but it is the main time when people rally together to help our cause. As I reflect again about Christmas, I think of all the volunteers who gave so freely of their time, all the churches that worked together to help, all the clubs that focused on a project, all the businesses that donated what they could, and all the individuals both young and old who

Dear Editor, What happened to all of the gardeners in Drumheller? We have 3 groups dedicated to gardening and we cannot get people to join and help these groups. Communities in Bloom has been looking for someone to take over the group for the past year. Drumheller will be losing its status with Communities in Bloom if we do not bring the judges back this year. The Badlands Community Gardens Society has just had two of the executive step down and needs more people to continue. This group is building the new park where Munchie the topiary dinosaur is. They have grant money to do the park,

The Drumheller Garden Club has decided not to hold monthly meetings anymore. These three groups are for Drumheller residents to enjoy and participate in. Why is this not happening? I hear people talking all the time about how dirty and out-dated our town is, but I don’t see them stepping up and helping to make Drumheller the award winning town it should be. You don’t even need to be a gardener to join. These groups need leadership and organization besides gardeners. Everyone has some skill they can share. Please step up and help make Drumheller a place we can be proud of. Please contact these groups if you can spare some time and expertise. The Homestead Fire Department arrived quickly on the scene and began working immediately to put out the fire. Soon after, they were joined by members of the Hanna Fire Department. Crews quickly extinguished the fires around the yard, but the old wooden shingles on the roof proved to be stubborn, with areas flaring up occasionally. Crews eventually returned to their departments late in the evening. Smith has a couple of ideas as to what may have started the fire. “I have a wood stove and had it on. With the wooden shingles, I guess a spark landed on them,” hypothesized Smith. “Or maybe it was an electrical short.” With the dry weather and the inherent dangers of wooden shingles, a tiny spark may have been all it would have taken to start the fire. Smith did manage to remove a few valuables from the house. “I got most of my stuff out of there, I didn’t have that much in there,” said Smith. The remaining items are now a write off. The cause of the blaze may be uncertain, but what is certain is that were it not for the caring nature of Smith’s neighbours, the day may have had a far more tragic end.

Rosedale business loses control of burn Michael James| inSide Drumheller

QUOTE

Residents in Rosedale had cause for concern around supper time on Wednesday, February 22, as a plume of smoke covered the skies of some areas of the community. A controlled burn of scrap wood became a chaotic inferno when sparks ignited a nearby pile that was not intended to be immolated. Inland Plastics staff occasionally conduct controlled burns to dispose of scrap pieces of wood that accumulate when making palettes. “The staff were burning a little bit at a time. They put the fire out, covered it, and went home. A spark must have jumped nearby and started smouldering and they didn’t realize it,” said John Goudy, president of Inland Plastics. With the dry conditions, the spark soon grew into an enormous blaze. "The staff were burning a little bit at a time. They put the fire out, covered it, and went home. A spark must have jumped nearby and started smouldering and they didn’t realize it.” John Goudy

Goudy was at work when he got a call from his wife, who was at their home which overlooks the business and the site of the fire. She saw the fire, called Goudy home and phoned 9-1-1. The Rosedale Fire Department was on scene in mere minutes. By that time, the fire had grown so large that the heat was palpable from thirty metres away. The fire was completely extinguished and crews left the area late in the evening.

Bill Bachynski, Fire Chief of Drumheller, warns that residents should exercise caution, considering the dry conditions. "Fire is always a concern, even when there is a lot of moisture. You have to always be aware of conditions in and out of your house," said Bachynski.

Ladies are champions, for now... Michael James | inSide Drumheller

It was a close contest that leaves the men of Drumheller to listen to a year of gloating. The ladies have beaten the gents in the 2012 Battle of the Sexes competition. The men had won their ďŹ rst victory last year and raised the bar for the ladies. “Oh yeah, I wanted to win this year,â€? said Audrey DeBona, who did an impressive 700 lengths. Last week, the competition heated up. The men were behind, but catching up. Alas, it was not meant to be this year. “We were trying, but there was one day when the ladies swam 1000 lengths and us 400,â€? said Tyson Anderson. “That’s when they won. Next year we’ll get them.â€? In the end, the ladies won with 14,538 (363 km) compared to the 13,144 (329 km) swam by the men, a dierence of 1394 (34 km) lengths. The number of participants for the ladies was up this year. The ladies had an army of 69, up by six from last year, whereas the men were the same with 51. It was this dierence that was the deciding factor. “They won it, they deserve the victory. We were pretty close, but we had a couple of swimmers who were away,â€? said John Sparling “Statistically, we could have won it, but numbers count and they’ve got them.â€? “I’m glad to see such a great turnout. The new ladies deďŹ nitely tipped the scales in our favour,â€? said Bev Cole. “I really hope we attract more men and women next year.â€? There was one lucky gent though. David Lloyd, who swam the maximum 700 lengths in the

competition, was the recipient of the free three month pass. For the ladies, Shelly Blanchett won the three month pass. The swimmers who made the herculean eort to swim 700 lengths were, for the ladies, Cole, DeBona, Ann Wade, and Eileen Woods. For the men, Duane Bolin, Dave Eberth, Lloyd, Bink Losoncy, Sparling, Morgan Syversten, Scott Toews, and Mike Yavis.

Sadly, Terry Bilson, who had participated for many years, passed away during the competition. In his memory, friends completed his 700 lengths. “He was a great guy and we’ll miss him, said Sparling. The men are ready to take back the championship next year. “We’ll be back and we’re going to take it next year, said Sparling. “Ladies, savour the victory while you can.

Tonight and tomorrow night, the Midget Raptors face Sundre to determine who will be zone champions, going on to compete for the title of provincial champions. Tomorrow’s game against Sundre starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Drumheller Memorial Arena. If the Midget Raptors win, they will go on to compete for the provincial championships for the Midget C division in Manning, March 15 to 18. Sunday, the team will be playing High River in the league playos. “They’ve come together as a team. There’s no individual effort anymore,â€? said head coach Darren Toan. “This is a team that can put it together and get it done. If it’s going to happen, this is the year. We have a great group of kids.â€? Apart from the Midget Raptors, four other teams are heading to league playos: The DMHA Novice, Encana Atom, Hi-Way 9 Pee Wee, and the Boston Pizza/Western Chevrolet Bantam Raptors. The DMHA Raptors will be having their ďŹ rst playo home game on Sunday at 10:45 a.m. against Strathmore. “We can beat them. We’re more looking forward to beating Brooks in the ďŹ nal,â€? explained head coach Tony Pliva. Brooks, the ďŹ rst place team, have won the past couple of games against the DMHA Raptors. “It’s their ďŹ rst year of organized hockey and to make it to the playos is exciting,â€? said Pliva. The Encana Atom Raptors are entering playos as well. They’ll be playing Nanton in the ďŹ rst round and the ďŹ rst game is on Saturday in Nanton. The two teams will come to Drumheller the next day at 1:00 p.m. The Hi-Way 9 Pee Wee team will be facing Okotoks at 5:45 p.m. here in Drumheller for their ďŹ rst game of the playos. “It’s been a good year for the kids,â€? said assistant coach Scott Westman. “They have really come together. With hard work they ďŹ nished in fourth place.â€? Things are looking good for the team. This past weekend they went up against an undefeated High River team and

Cody Hodge, of the Hi-Way 9 Pee Wee Raptors unleashes some fancy stick work to drive the puck to the net. The Hi-Way 9 Raptors are headed to league playoffs and will be facing Okotoks at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, February 25. Four other Raptors teams have made their playoffs. came out with a tie, but almost won the game in the dying seconds. “That gives us some good momentum going into the playos,â€? said Westman. Lastly, the Bantam Raptors are heading to the playos after ďŹ nishing in third place in their league. However, the team will be having a break before starting playos. For the remaining teams, the end of the regular season means

they will pick up exhibition games when they can and perhaps participate in tournaments during March. “All in all it was a great season. It’s great to see the progression of the kids, said Curt Notland, head coach of the Canalta Novice Raptors. For more information about Drumheller Minor Hockey, visit www.drumhellerminorhockey. com.
