If there is a level playing field to carry out the Battle of the Sexes, it is the Drumheller Aquaplex. The competition started on February 23, between the men and the women to see which sex can swim the most pool lengths in a two week period. So far, the men are in the lead. Cody Gouin, right, seems to be proud of their efforts, flexing some swimming muscles for an unimpressed Kali Wade. The men are hoping to redeem themselves after last year’s close fought loss. The competition continues until March 8. inSide Photo Michele Scott

Drumheller’s Oldest Realtor in his 20’s Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The trick to getting to 90, says John Wiebe, is to live it day by day the best you can, enjoy, and have fun. Wiebe is selling real estate, something he’s been doing since 1997, because he didn’t like retirement. “I tried, and no. I have no intention of retiring. I’ll ride this horse until it drops.” Hometown Realty Owner/Broker Kelly Boyko says Wiebe makes the office a great place to be. “It’s just a pleasure having him around. He’s excellent at it, and he’s professional, hardworking - everything you want in a realtor.” Wiebe’s having a good year, according to Boyko. “It’s one of his best starts since he’s been there. He’s in the office every day and enthusias-

tic.” Wiebe is a leap year baby, turning 90 years young this February 29. “There’s a mistake on my birth certificate,” says Wiebe. “We were so far away from the registrars, my mother gave the papers for me and my cousin to my grandfather, and when he took the papers in he registered me on my cousin’s birth date and my cousin on my birth date.”

“You didn’t take a test or anything you just paid the dollar.”

ARTISTS SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERISM VOLUNTEERS SUPPORTING ARTISTS! The FCSS Coordinator from the Town of Drumheller is trying to coordinate a Silent Auction to recruit new volunteers for the community. The idea is to try and find artists who would be willing to donate a piece of their art to a community silent auction. The purpose of the silent auction is to recruit new volunteers and / or extend current Volunteers’ hours of volunteering. These individuals would bid a number of volunteer hours in order to receive that actual piece of art. As a silent auction the highest bidder (most hours offered for volunteerism) would win the art. We would encourage youth to submit both their art and their time as well. The Vision for this auction is to have the art displayed for the length of the auction in the Badlands Community Facility Art Gallery, thereby providing the artist with a free showing of their work. Any artist who donates a piece of art would receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of the art donated. Thank you for your time and consideration. If you would be interested in donating art to our initiative, please contact Jennie Lutz at 403-823-1365 or email her at jlutz@dinosaurvalley.com The Silent Auction will take place from April 7th to April 11th.

???DID YOU KNOW??? “That the town traffic bylaw only allows a vehicle to be parked on a town street without moving for 72 hours?  In all areas of town there are vehicles that have been left parked for weeks, some longer as they have snow accumulation around them that is indicative of having been parked in a location possibly since the start of winter. If a vehicle is parked in excess of 72 hours or is a hazard bylaw enforcement has the authority to tow that vehicle under the bylaw. Please be considerate and if you have a vehicle that has been parked in violation of the bylaw please move that vehicle. If anyone wishes to discuss this call Greg Peters at town hall at 823-1363.

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW????? You can find the Drumheller ActiveNet online by Googling Drumheller Activenet. It will show How Do I Book Recreation Facilities and all the calendars will appear there. You cannot book arena time from there but you can check for availability in all areas of recreation! PLEASE NOTE- BADLANDS COMMUNITY FACILITY WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT PAYMENTS FOR ARENA OR BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL WITHOUT THE PERMIT/INVOICE NUMBER.

The Town of Drumheller is pleased to offer the Badlands Scholarship again this year.

Sienna HOLDEN Age: 26 Current Occupation: Educational Assistant at Drumheller Valley Secondary School. How long have you done that? I’m very new - I’m in my fourth month now. Where did you grow up? Edmonton. I love the Oilers. How long have you lived in Drumheller? One month. I moved from Rosebud where I lived for 7 years. What brought you to the area? The Passion Play. I did the summer school program (performing arts) in Drumheller. Through that I learned about Rosebud, and a year after high school I attended the Rosebud School for the Performing Arts. Does that come in handy for dealing with teenagers? It does - they have a flair for the dramatic, plus you learn to communicate with people.

Where have you travelled? I graduated Rosebud, then went to England to live the acting dream, which means working at Starbucks. The funny thing is that I don’t actually drink coffee. What’s something about you people might not know? I worked in an orphanage in Uganda for about eight months. What was the biggest challenge there? I was sick a lot hospitalized a few times with malaria - I probably had it at least a third of the time I was there. What is your favourite meal? Spaghetti and meatballs is up there, and so is French toast. What is your favourite saying? I think they’re cliches, but use them. The one I’ve been liking lately is “all that matters is to do good work.”

Cheesy Greek-style Spinach Artichoke Dip Here is an academy award-worthy recipe to nibble on while watching the Oscars this weekend. The feta and olives add a nice “zip” to a basic spinach artichoke dip. The extra cheeses add a nice, richness. You can mix it ahead and even refrigerate it the day before. If you happen to be having an Oscar party, then the work is all done and you have plenty of time to roll out the red carpet and prepare for your guests! Ingredients • 1 cup pimiento-stuffed green olives, chopped • 1 jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained and chopped (save marinade) • 1 10-oz. package frozen spinach, thawed, squeezed dry, chopped • 2 cups grated mozzarella cheese • 1-1/2 cups grated Asiago cheese • 1 block cream cheese, softened and cubed • 1 cup crumbled feta cheese • 1/3 cup grated provolone cheese • 1/3 cup minced fresh basil • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Directions. In a 3-qt. slow cooker coated with cooking spray, combine all ingredients. · Stir in reserved artichoke liquid. · Cook, covered, on high 2 hours. · Stir, then cook 30-60 mins longer on low. · Serve with crackers or nacho chips. (I like the scoops type) *If you don’t use a slow cooker, this can be done in a deep baking dish in the oven. Bake, covered, for 2-3 hours at 325. -Lori

OBITUARY Mrs. Carla “Aida” GRUBER 1929 ~ 2014

Carla “Aida” Gruber was born in Hamburg, Germany on March 26, 1929. Her parents were Joseph and Martha Lenz. Mom lived in Hamburg until she met Peter Gruber. She then came to Canada by herself across the ocean at the age of 23 to be with her future husband. They were married August 23, 1952 and had two children, Christel and Peter. They lived in Rolling Hills for three years on a strip mine. The job opportunity came for Dad to work in the mines in the Drumheller Valley so they moved and settled in East Coulee. In 1998 just before Dad passed away they moved to Drumheller. Once Mom lost her eye sight she moved to a facility in Hanna and after her stroke she moved to a facility in Innisfail where her daughter lives. Mom spent her final days there until she went to be with the Lord. Mom was very active person, involved in so many things. She worked in the Drumheller High School cafeteria for a number of years until she retired in 1993 at the age of 64. She loved to cook and you could see her at many functions in the valley preparing and serving the meals. She looked after the Bingos in East Coulee, she joined the Royal Purple Ladies in Drumheller and became Honored Royal Lady. Once her term of Honored Royal Lady was completed she was still involved until 2012 when she lost her eye sight. Mom also curled and bowled for a few years until she found those activities too difficult to manage. She loved music and classical was probably her favorite. That probably stemmed from the fact that her father was a musician and violin maker as a sideline so she was introduced to music at a very young age. Mom spent her days before she lost her sight crocheting afghans, dish clothes and scarves and up until she lost her sight would sell up a table and sell her creations at the farmers market. After she lost her sight she continued to crochet dish clothes. Mom is predeceased by; her father and mother Joseph and Martha Lenz, her brother Sigfried Lenz and her husband Peter Gruber. She is survived by; 4 siblings Toska Frietag, Carmen Johannson, Joseph Lenz and Heiko Lenz all of Germany. She is also survived by: her two children Christel McLeod (David) of Innisfail and Peter Gruber (Lorie) of Drumheller and 8 grandchildren: Christine Deminchuk (Kevin) of Red Deer, Matthew McLeod (Kristina) of Red Deer, Joshua McLeod (Kristin) of Calgary, Jonathan McLeod of Innisfail and Sarah McLeod of Sylvan Lake, Natasha Gruber (Steve) of Grande Prairie, Tyler Gruber of Regina, and Brandon Gruber of Drumheller and 1 great-granddaughter, Madison Deminchuk of Red Deer. She was also two months short of becoming a great-grandmother again. A special thanks to all the nursing staff at the Hanna Continuing Care Facility and the Rosefield Continuing Care in Innisfail. We will miss her very much and even though she became blind she never lost her love for music and her sense of humor. Now she is dancing with the angels with her sight back. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Aida to Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta & N.W.T. Room 124, Professional Building 430-6 Avenue S.E. Medicine Hat, Alberta T1A 2S8. Courtney-Winters Funeral Home entrusted with arrangements (403 823 2666). A Memorial Service will be held Monday, March 3, 2014 at Courtney-Winters Funeral Home 199-2nd Street West, Drumheller, Alberta with Jerry Beskowine L.W.L. officiating. 9c

Valley boy becomes a Dino Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

A Drumheller footballer, who dominated the gridiron as a Titan, is moving on to bigger ďŹ elds. On February 5 Tanner Borowicz, son of Lawrence and Cindy, signed to play with University of Calgary Dinos. This September he will commence his studies and wear the red and gold. Tanner came late to football, but was a standout in lacrosse and basketball at St. Anthony’s. He played in Grade 9, but only rejoined the Titans in his senior year. He quickly became an integral part of the team’s oence and defense in its campaign for the provincial title. He graduated from St. Anthony’s in 2013 and there was interest from post secondary schools for Tanner to join their squad.
