Habs, All Stars dazzle in alumni game Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The regular black and orange of the Drumheller Memorial Arena was muted Wednesday as the red, blue and white took over for the night. The Drumheller Memorial Arena was at near capacity as legendary Montreal Canadiens skated on to the ice to take on a team of Drumheller All Stars. Legends like Steve Shutt and Stephane Richer lined up under the watchful eye of coach Guy Lafleur. While it wasn’t the hallowed Montreal Forum, the mystique of the Habs was present. “There is no question with the Canadiens, no

Editor inSide Drumheller The following Letter to the Editor is a copy of a letter sent to Prime Minister Stephen Harper from former Drumheller Public Head Librarian Linde Turner after scientist reports and photos of books in dumpsters and newspaper headlines of what the Federal Government calls a “consolidation of material” at a number of its libraries . Dear Mr. Prime Minister: I have searched for an understandable explanation for your gov-

matter where we go, there are so many fans that remember all those years, they remember so many of the good times, and we get a chance to share it with them,” said Rick Green, who played for the Habs for six seasons. “We can go to the smallest areas, down east or up north, and people come out, they want to talk hockey and share their stories.” He chuckles that some of the fans remember those stories better than the players. Lafleur told inSide Drumheller it amazes and surprises them when they see this type of turnout for a game featuring players who have not been on the ice

for years. “We have been away from hockey for so many years. I think people do this because they have a tough time identifying with today’s players, and when they do, they can’t talk to them or take pictures. We are always available to our fans, even when we played in the pros,” said Lefluer. “In a way it keeps us alive.” For many spectators, it was a thrill to just see some of the stars in the flesh. For a number of players it was a dream come true. Not only did Marcel Augey get to play with the Montreal Canadiens, but he also scored the first goal assisted by Stephane Richer. It cer-

ernment’s policy on the destruction of libraries. There isn’t one. One remark that digitization will replace discarded printed material is simply not true, and puts the lie to any explanation of cost saving: digitization cannot occur if the source material is in the dumpster. In addition, digitization is both time-consuming and expensive, as I know from personal experience in my work. The destruction of scientific, medical, historical and cultural material has caused incalculable damage and censorship to present and future generations across Canada and around the world. I urge you to reconsider this direction – as soon as you can, and

while there is still something to be saved.

tainly wasn’t the last as Sheldon Straub scored for the All Stars just a few minutes later. The finals score was 10-8 for the Habs. For one member of the All Stars, it was a long road back to hockey, and he was happy to take it. In fact, it took 17 years. Laverne Bremer has been a Montreal fan he estimates since he was one year old. He played as a youngster and also coached for his kids’ teams. Since his son passed away almost two decades ago in a tragic accident, he had never laced on his skates. He was hoping to get tickets for the game, but was surprised by his wife and daughter who bought his

place on the team. Within a month he had found his hockey legs again. The event was in support of raising funds for the Badlands Community Facility. Organizers were pleased with the turnout for the event, and the entertainment value it provided. Some youngsters had the opportunity to have a brush with greatness when the Drumheller All Star Kids played an impromptu game at one of the period changes. “We travel all over the country and have an opportunity to meet a lot of people, and we really enjoy the experience of giving back to the communities,” said Green.

Yours truly, Linde Turner

Editor inSide Drumheller We wish to thank the Drumheller Dragons, Kari-Ann, and the coaches for having the boys come to our Manor for visits, etc. We certainly enjoyed walking with them on the Winter Walk Day and then having them come back over here to have a snack break.

CANADA DAY IS COMING FAST! We invite local bands to apply to play at our big party again this year. Please contact Judy at 403-823-1324 or jarvidson@dinosaurvalley. com or Call Lyle at the Badlands Community Facility (403-823-1370) if you would like to help us celebrate.

???DID YOU KNOW??? Placement of C-Cans (sea cans) require a Development Permit application and approval. Also, these units are not permitted in any area zoned as a residential district, even for temporary placement during construction. Please contact the Development Authority for additional information. Cindy Woods, Development Officer, Town of Drumheller 403-823-1310

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW????? that it is a town bylaw that all dogs and cats be registered. Please attend town hall and buy your dog and cat tags. If a pet wearing tags is lost and then found it makes it much easier to return it to the owner if it can readily be identified. Similarly if your dog or cat has been microchipped by a veterinarian bylaw members have the device to read microchip details and identify the owner. Microchipping has advantages over a dog or cat wearing tags or even tattooing as the chip will always be identifiable and the owner need not worry if your pet was not wearing its tag when it wandered off. Tattooing can be helpful but microchipping appears the most effective and durable method of pet identification. Please buy your registrations and do your utmost to ensure that your pet can be identified and returned to you in the event it gets lost. Any questions please call Greg Peters at the Community Enforcement and Bylaw office at 823-1363. If anyone would like further information or discuss any of the topics above please call Greg Peters of bylaw at town hall 823-1363. Thanks.

The Town of Drumheller is pleased to offer the Badlands Scholarship again this year. We are putting the scholarship timing up to match with the Celebration of Excellence. Applications will be available at Town Hall beginning Feb. 15th and will be accepted until March 31, 2014.

Co-op Cash caper caught Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

As inconspicuous us as it may look, Co-op cash has real value and should be treated as money, as one Drumheller resident learned. An agent appeared in provincial court on behalf of Terry Heptonstahl. He was charged with possession of stolen property. He pleaded guilty. The court heard that between August 9 and 11 of 2013 a resident’s motor vehicle was broken into and about $45 in Co-op Cash, a rebate coupon printed on a receipt when a person buys gas at the Co-op Gas Bar, was taken. On August 14, the person went to the Co-op gas bar and asked the staff to keep a look-out for his Coop cash. Each receipt typically has the name of the customer and their Co-op number. About 20 minutes later Heptonstahl walked into the gas bar and attempted to pay for his gas using the vouchers. The staff refused and Heptonstahl paid for his gas. Agent for Heptonstahl indicated that the cash came from a fellow that Heptonstahl gave a ride to, and he should have known such a deal was too good to be true. He was fined $300 plus a victim’s fine surcharge.

Valentine’s Day: A Day of Romance The origins of Valentine’s Day are not clear. It is thought that there were a number of local fertility festivals in Europe in pre-Christian times. These were often in the middle of February. Many people also thought that birds chose their mates at this time of year. Around the year 1380, the English poet Chaucer wrote a poem for the first anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. This is thought to be the first association between celebrations of romantic love and St Valentine’s Day on February 14. The connection remained important throughout the middle ages. In the mid-19th century, there was an increase in interest in Valentine’s Day, first in the United States, then in Canada. It was promoted by manufacturers of paper lace and cards as a means of increasing their sales. Gradually, this date was seen as an occasion for a man to present gifts to a woman with whom he had or would like to have had a romantic relationship. It was also customary for lovers to exchange handwritten notes. These have now largely been replaced by commercially produced cards.

Terry Yemen to send a letter to the province. In the letter sent to Alberta Infrastructure Minister Ric McIver, Mayor Terry Yemen outlines the issue and asks for the Minister’s “intervention to ensure a permanent solution is found and implemented on a timely basis.”

Hey Kids!! Looking for a great way to make some cash?

The Mayor says the problem has been going on for years. He states it’s been an issue for the seven or eight years he’s been in Council. “A couple of years ago the town replaced the lines, but unfortunately it didn’t prevent the problem from happening,” says the May-

or. Al Kendrick, Director of Infrastructure Services for the Town of Drumheller, says the tender the province put out for work is now closed, with an expected arrival date of materials for replacement in three weeks, and an expected completion date of

March 18th. Mr. Kendrick, at the January 27 Drumheller Town Council meeting, listed a few things the province was looking at trying, such as jet cleaning the line, changing some valves and changing some piping. If the town is not satisfied after the prov-

ince does their work, there are a number of methods town staff could try for remedies. Residents from Fourth Avenue in Newcastle who notice an odour are asked to call Brian Bolduc at 403-823-1330 or Linda Handy at 403-8231339, day or night, and leave a message.

Drumheller’s minor hockey players are doing their best to propel their teams to win as playo time nears. The Encana Atom Raptors played at home against Strathmore on Saturday, winning their game 6 to 2. “Our player’s played very well defensively and limited Strathmore’s chances throughout the game,â€? says coach Je Paarup. He says the team played consistently through all three periods, which is what their coaching sta has been looking for. The player of the game was Jesse Paarup. Encana plays Strathmore again on home ice this Saturday. Hi-Way 9 Peewee Raptors had their work cut out for them at home as they faced Canmore, the top team in the league. The team lost 6 - 1, with coach Jason Ewing saying although it was a tough game, the team did have some positives with their positional play.

Ewing says they need to be at their best to beat Canmore, and he believes they can. “Hopefully we will get another shot at them in the playos.â€? The Hi-Way 9 goal came from Dale Pliva, with assists going to Jarred Durbano and Sam Gridley. The McDonald’s Novice Raptors also had a regular season game on the weekend, losing to Airdrie 12 to 3. Coach Kit Clark says the loss isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as he was concerned the team was getting a little over conďŹ dent during the past few league games. Clark says their two ďŹ rst year players, Brett Schrock and Ava Harrington, were a bright part of the game, playing hard and smart for the whole game. The Canalta Novice Raptors won both of their games over the weekend. Canalta won 4 - 3 over Chestermere, down 3-0 after two periods but then came back to score four goals in the third period for the win. “The kids did an awesome job by not giv-
