Chinese New Year fell on February 3, and Chan and the lions came to the class for students to learn more about the Chinese Zodiac and new year’s celebrations. War cenotaph to be relocated inSide STREETERS in front of community facility

A newly formed committee hopes to move the war cenotaph from obscurity to the public eye when the Badlands Community Facility opens in August. Currently sitting on the flood plain behind the Drumheller Memorial Arena, the monument to those who made the supreme sacrifice is too hidden, relocation project committee chair Stan Baird says. “It’s an obtuse situation, the only time it’s seen is on Remembrance Day,” Baird told inSide Drumheller. “It’s got to be moved, and we’ve been granted a prominent space in front of the facility.” Their application arrived to Veterans Affairs Canada in Charlottetown this week, with hopes that up to $25,000 of the estimated $50,000 project’s funds will be granted. "It’s got to be moved, and we’ve been granted a prominent space in front of the facility.” Stan Baird

The remainder of the $50,000 will be solicited from patriotic residents and local corporate entities. The Town of Drumheller’s community services director Paul Salvatore sits on the committee. “It’s going to be prominent, so we can be proud of the cenotaph and reflect on the 76 citizens who joined the forces and gave the supreme sacrifice, and to pay respect to those who suffered physical and mental wounds because of the war,” Baird said.

A committee has been formed to fund the relocation and rededication of the Drumheller war cenotaph, moving it from the “obtuse” location behind the Memorial Arena to the front of the Badlands Community Facility once construction of phase one is completed in August. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie

In anticipation for Valentine’s Day on Monday, inSide Drumheller asked these people to finish the poem, “Roses are red, violets are blue...”

History is shared by word of mouth, in monument and in texts. It is also shared through images. This year Drumheller is celebrating the centennial of coal mining. This industry gave birth to Drumheller as single men and families came from all over the world to work underground to better their lot in life. From this, the community grew. Families gathered over the weekends and holidays. They gathered in living rooms and ballfields,

and in doing this, they took pictures, dozens of pictures, and many of them are currently in binders in basements or on shelves collecting dust. The Mining Centennial Planning Committee is asking residents to crack into their shoeboxes and albums and share their pictures with the community. The centennial of coal mining is not just what happened underground, but when the community worked and played, learned and laughed. On Saturday, February

19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. the community is hosting a community picture collection at Greentree Mall. They want to capture the days of mining through images families have captured over the years. They are not asking for possession of these precious photos, only to scan them. They will be scanning a copy while residents wait. The committee plans to share the photos with the public during centennial celebrations and for years to come.

Could this be the year for the men? Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It has almost become habitual for the ladies to come out on top of the annual Battle of the Sexes at the Drumheller Aquaplex. A record of 16 straight wins has had the men ringing their hands and their suits. Time after time, they have been out-stroked by the oating femme fatales. Could the tide be changing? Could this be the year? The Drumheller Aquaplex opened in 1976 and since 1978 has staged the battle of the sexes. The concept is simple, keep track of your lengths and at the end of the allotted time, may the best man‌er‌woman, win. However, it appears the water might be owing in the other direction. Last year there were only 273 laps separating the men and the victors. Rumour says the gap could have been made up had John

Sparling not missed a couple of evening dips. Maybe the men aren’t washed up after all. This year’s competition started on February 6 and goes to February 20, and to much chagrin of the lady folk, the men are leading. That’s right, leading. A tally after the ďŹ rst three days of competition have the men showing 4,727 laps completed, adding up to 118 kilometres. The women have completed 3,204 laps for 80 kilometres. That is a 38-kilometre spread, that’s all the way to East Coulee and back, or four round trips to the Cool Castle. It appears the men are showing some pride (as much pride as you can show in a Speedo) and might actually have a chance to wrest the trident from the poolside Poseidons. Only time and lengths will tell.

Karen Rusnak and Terry Bilson are ready to duke it out in the pool at this year’s Battle of the Sexes. So far the men are leading by about 38 kilometres.

Could this be the year to break the women’s 16 win streak? inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

It looks like residents who purchased ski passes for the 2010-2011 season won’t have to wait until next season to see if there will be skiing. On Wednesday morning a press release dated February 4, signed by Zrinko Amerl of Badlands Ski Hill Ltd. announced there would be “refunds for ALL season passes

Hopes for a ski season this year collapsed when in January the Drumheller Valley Ski Club did not take the town’s oer of a short-term lease to operate the ski hill. This oer included paying an outstanding water bill, half the cost of replacing a water meter, pay upfront for this season’s water, provide proof of insurance and to remove a caveat. At the time, Amerl said ski passes purchased for the current year “will be fully honoured in 2011/12 season as it is common practice by ski hills in Canada and has been practiced by Drumheller Valley Ski Club in the past. On the other hand, if our negotiations fail, ski hill assets will be sold o and passes will be reimbursed in full.â€? In the press release dated February 4, he oers an apology for the frustrations of this year’s closure. For ski pass holders who want to request a refund, they are to go to www.skidrumheller.com. There is a link to a “Refund Request Form.â€? Pass holders are requested to continue to watch the website for the dates refunds will be issued at the ski hill.

Did you know? The modern day incarnation of Saint Valentine's Day might very well be rooted in the ďŹ ction of noted English author Georey Chaucer during the High Middle Ages. During this time period, the tradition of courtly love began to ourish, and it was in Chaucer's "Parlement of Foules" that the association of Valentine's Day with romantic love was ďŹ rst broached. The poem was written to honor the ďŹ rst anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II to Anne of Bohemia. The poem is set within the context of an old lover's tradition. However, no such tradition existed before Chaucer. While literary theorists continue to debate Chaucer's role in the formation of the traditions associated with the modern day Valentine's Day, those who are not fond of the day might consider blaming one of the history's most notorious bards for whatever inconvenience the day provides them.

Origins of "Valentine"

Every year couples express their love on a day that is set aside explicity to do just that. The origins of Valentine's Day are well documented and, in fact, there were multiple people named Valentine when the holiday originated. It is well known that Valentine's Day was named after two Christian martyrs, both of whom were named Valentine. But many do not know from where this unique name derived. The name "Valentine" is believed to come from the Latin word, "valor,"meaning worthy.

wrong reason. “It sounds like a Rammstein album,” MacDonald says about the valley, one stop on a 21 day comedy tour in 21 different towns. “I’m interested in seeing what the place is based on the name.” “I’m on the mortgage tour

Decade long Canadian comedy veteran Mike MacDonald will be performing at Dino’s Pub on Saturday, February 12 at 8:00 p.m. MacDonald’s on the Blackjack Comedy Tour, 21 shows in 21 towns in 21 days – or the “mortgage tour” as he put it. inSide photo by Kyle Smylie

every month – every month I have to pay the mortgage.” A two decade veteran of the Just for Laughs comedy festival and even longer veteran of the North American comedy circuit, MacDonald says he’s happy to be playing shows in Canada. “The Canadian audiences are just better. Americans have the attitude of ‘make me laugh’, and Canadian audiences are just happy to show up. They can retain information – they can read a book, then read another book and the first book’s not knocked out.” MacDonald says patrons at Dino’s Saturday can expect a funny show, despite his busy schedule of 21 shows in 21 towns in 21 days as part of the Blackjack Comedy Tour. MacDonald says the secret to lasting so long in the business is knowing when to shut up. “You have to know when to not linger on stage; you do your stuff, bow and get off. Always keep them wanting

more than not enough,” says MacDonald. “My comedy’s changed over the years. When I first walked out there I used to have a machine gun and mow down everything and there were lots of people getting killed. Now I’m just a

sniper and let the bad guys die. There are no innocent victims. “You never pick on the little guy, you pick on the monopoly.” The show starts at 8:00 p.m. at Dino’s Pub in Drumheller, Saturday, February 12.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

I’ve been retired for several years now. It’s not all it’s cracked up to be. If you don’t have a hobby or two, time tends to be very tedious, bearing heavily on one’s psyche. This is especially so in winter, when the days are short and the nights long. Time can wear a man down, without physical or mental stimulation. At my age I am still employable (as a Wal-Mart greeter). I would like a job that’s a little higher up, with better pay, beneďŹ ts, a pension and an assistant. Yesterday I think I found it. The CEO of Enmax, Gary Holden, resigned last month, with a severance package of $4.6 million. To some that amount may sound unconscionable, to others, it’s merely the cost of doing business. Personally, I ďŹ nd it a little much for a community-owned power company. Now , however, the fellow who has taken over as interim CEO has stated publicly that if he were to take the job on a permanent basis, the $1.2 million salary is not enough. I say, good for you fella, it leaves me an opportunity. I am now in a position to oer my services to Enmax for one third of what the other fellow thinks is not enough. That’s right, I’ll do the job for a paltry $400,000. Of course I’d like all the beneďŹ ts and a $60,000 pension. That’s not too much to ask when you consider what the other guy got. Seriously, what is it these guys do to deserve salaries, bonuses and pensions that sometimes reach into the tens of millions? The interim CEO claiming that $1.2 million is not enough cites the former CEO’s salary of $2.7 million and compensation, and says that they are in line with other power market executives. I say, “So what?â€?

Here’s one for all the global warming a.k.a. climate change proponents: A study by the University of Alberta predicts that if the thaw in Hudson Bay occurred a month earlier, about 50 per cent of pregnant bears would fail to give birth. And, if the ice break up occurred two months earlier, 55 to 100 per cent of potential mothers would fail to give birth. At the same time, the litter size could drop. This is just another piece of the puzzle of looking at how global warming/climate change could aect the polar bears. That’s two big “ifsâ€? and two big “couldsâ€?. Is this how global warming/climate change science works, with “ifsâ€? and “couldsâ€?? “If â€? so, then “couldâ€? the ice thaw two months later? “If â€? that happens, “couldâ€? there be more polar bears than we have ever seen before, “couldâ€? they start preying on humans as the ice worked its way inland? “If â€? a tree falls in the forest... blah, blah, blah... 6l

Alberta Party talks policy with Drumheller Councillors Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

The political landscape of Alberta has been shattered with the recent announcement of Premier Ed Stelmach’s retirement, quickly followed by Ted

Morton stepping out of caucus and Liberal leader David Swan also announcing his retirement. The Wildrose Alliance has also been on the road publicly establishing itself as an alternative government ready to make

a strike when an election is called. Another group has also been mobilizing, but over coffee, in kitchens and even online. Preceding the shake up at the legislature, Dave Taylor, Lib-

eral MLA, announced he would be joining the Alberta Party, a name that has been around for years, but has a found new currency on the political landscape. Interim leader of the Alberta Party Sue Huff and organizer Michael Walters were through Drumheller on Monday, February 7. They met with Drumheller town councillors. “We have a municipal governance policy, it is a new policy we are working on and we want to get feedback from municipal councillors, mayor and reeves,” said Huff on their visit. They have been through a number of communities in Alberta with this goal in mind. The Alberta Party has been on the fringes of Alberta politics for years, first formed in 1985 from fragments of the Social Credit movement and even some separatist sentiments. About a year ago, a new movement began under the Alberta Party moniker. “We are a party that builds our policies on the values of Albertans and believes that in order to build good policy you better listen, and listen well, to what Albertans want,” said Huff. In fact, listen in what they say they have done over the last year. They even called it the “Big Listen.” Walter explains that a year ago the part membership was about 40 strong. “Our party started from scratch, any policies we did have we suspended because we didn’t want them to bias the process, we didn’t want to sell policy that was pre-existing based on a small group of people,” he said. “In just over a year we have moved from 40 members to almost 900 today.” Huff said the party takes a moderate balanced approach. “(We) believe that government should be pragmatic rather than ideological, and the best ideas come when you listen to a lot of people, and are willing to acknowledge that good ideas exist everywhere. Good ideas come from across the political spectrum,” said Huff. “Grassroots" is a term ban-

died about in politics. Another political movement under the banner of the Wildrose Alliance also went to the “grassroots” to form tips policy. “We started the conversation in a very different place, we started from values…we asked three questions - what pressures are you facing, what are your hopes for the future and what are you grateful for living in Alberta,” said Huff. Walters adds, “Before anyone had heard of the other party, they had a leader and were well financed, that is a significant difference. They came up with a product and a brand to sell.” With the change in the political climate in Alberta, the party is working hard to be ready for an election whenever it comes. Currently they have 29 constituency associations organized and are aiming to have 50 in place by mid-March. After associations are formed there will be a push for candidates. “We have a restrained sense of urgency. We know it (the election) is coming but we are not going to cut corners for political expediency. We are preparing to run candidates in every riding and build the infrastructure in every riding. If we find the right candidate who is local and committed…we are not going to parachute anyone in to be a candidate,” said Walters. More on the party can be found at www.albertaparty.ca.

Special Olympic athletes head to Alberta winter competition Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Special Olympic athletes from Drumheller are on their way this weekend to the Alberta Special Olympic Games. Edmonton, Leduc and Devon are hosting this year’s games. The opening ceremonies are this Friday, February 11. Of the estimated 500 athletes expected to participate this weekend in seven different sports, a strong contingent of alpine skiers from Drumheller will be on the slopes. Coach Martin McSween said his team has been busy training, especially with conditioning, however they have only had two outings to hit the slopes. “The on-snow pieces are critical,” he said. The 2011 Alberta Special Olympic Games may be the start of a journey for some athletes. “A lot of athletes have a lot on the line during these provincial games,” Special Olympics vice president of sport Johnny Byrne said. “Many of them aspire to reach the national games and the world games, and they’ve trained hard to achieve those goals. enthusiasm, sportsmanship and excitement will be palpable.” Of the competitors, more than 70 will continue on to the 2012 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, which will be February 28 - March 2, 2012 in St. Albert. There are seven spots for alpine skiers to continue. “This is going to be a particularly exciting national games for many of these athletes,” 2012 Games chair Dan MacLennan said. “St. Albert is an amazing city and is ready to create an extraordinary games experience, along with the skiing events that will take place in Jasper. It will be the first time in more than a decade that the national games have been held in this province, and we’re going to make them the best ever.” Recently The Drumheller Mail reported McSween would be the Team Alberta alpine head coach at the Canadian competition. Of the athletes that make it to the 2012 Canada Special Olympic Games, they have a chance to qualify for the World Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea in 2013.

Sabres win consolation at Calgary tournament Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller Only three points held the St. Anthony’s Sabres boys off the championship side of the draw at a tournament in Calgary. However they salvaged the weekend and won consolation. The Sabres senior boys headed to Heritage Christian Academy to play in an eight team tournament last weekend. The senior boys were matched up in the first

game with a team whom they have become familiar. The Sabres faced Ecole De La Rose Savauge on Thursday afternoon. This same team denied St. Anthony’s a three-peat at this year’s Sabres Invitational tournament. It came down to a battle, but the Sabres lost 56-53. This put the Sabres on the consolation side of the draw and matched up against St. Jerome’s from Vermillion. It didn’t take

much for the Sabres to be motivated for this game. St. Jerome’s beat the Sabres in the first round of provincials in a raucous gym last spring. The Sabres came out strong and dominated St. Jerome’s from start to finish. Tanner Borowicz had 25 points for the Sabres, and Brandon Gruber had 19. Alex Cliche dominated inside offensively and defensively with 20 points. 22 rebounds and 11 blocked shots. The Sabres left the frustrated St. Jerome’s team on the court to deal with an 8634 defeat. This put the Sabres in the consolation final against Clear Water Academy out of Calgary. The Sabres executed their offense well and put up a wall on defence. Every player scored as the Sabres routed Clear Water 83-62. Gruber had 21, Borowicz had 19 and Josh Mohan had 12 points and six assists. Last week the Sabres also received a boost as last year’s point guard Matt Russell has rejoined the squad. This will give the backcourt a boost as they make their way towards the homestretch of the season.
