Hot coffee, cool maps Google started a new project in 2007 called Street View, a new feature of Google Maps and Google Earth and this week inSide Drumheller learned this community has been mapped with views from the ground, by the company. Street View provides 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic street level views that people can navigate. Some time at the end of June 2009, the Google Street View car came to Drumheller to take photos to create a virtual Drumheller on Google Maps. The Street View cameras caught local resident and downtown merchant Mike Todor, crossing 3rd Avenue towards his shop around midday, after picking up two cups of coffee. To see your house, your children’s house or any location in town, log on to maps.google.ca. Full instructions on how to use Street View can be found on page 2.

Drumheller added to Google Virtual World

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and everybody is getting ready to show their Valentine how special they are. inSide Drumheller wanted to check just how romantic people are, so we asked Drumhellerites to finish a little, very well known, poem “Roses are red, violets are....”

“Really cool technology and will provide a unique opportunity to showcase Drumheller!” said Heather Bitz, general manager at the Chamber of Commerce when inSide Drumheller announced to her Drumheller is now featured in Google Street View. Really cool technology indeed: Street View is an addition to Google Maps or Google Earth which enables a 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic street level view of an area. People can now access Drumheller from a computer or a mobile device in Google Maps and navigate through the area as if they are walking or driving. To do this, they need to find the street they want to see from Google Maps, zoom in on the street as close as they want, drag and drop a little orange man, (Google called him Pegman), on the area, and it’s like they are there, right in front of their house (this IS the first place people think to look up!). The photos Google took of Drumheller were taken at the end of spring 2009 when the landscape was lush and green.

Daylon Kerr “...navy, I like you you like me maybe!”

Pascale Taylor | Inside Drumheller

To access Drumheller on Street View, to go maps. google.ca, enter Drumheller in “Search Maps”, zoom in to the area then drag and drop the orange figure found above the zoom bar on the left hand side of the map section.

Stephanie Dalton “...blue, When thinking of love, it’s like thinking of you!”

Andrew Berdahl “...blue, when I’m with you, my heart feels brand new!”

At that time, construction on the Gordon Taylor Bridge was in progress so were the road and sidewalk repairs in the east part of downtown. Street View users can easily lose hours navigating through the streets of Drumheller, especially when they realize they might be able to go to places they have wanted to see - the house they grew up in maybe? So how did Google do it? Well, they used one of their “Street View" cars, Wikipedia lists the makes/model in each country, and sometimes Google Trikes (tricycles) or a snowmobile are used. The vehicle drives around each street taking pictures every 10 or 20 metres, with a nine directional camera which gives 360° views. Weeks and sometimes months are spent putting the photos together to give 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic street level views within Google Maps. They also apply face blurring technology, so people can’t be identified and license plates

3rd Avenue East in Drumheller via Google Street View Drumheller was recently added to Street View in Google Maps. Street View gives a 360° horizontal and 290° vertical panoramic street level view of an area so people can navigate through the streets are blurred. Google has mapped from the west end of Newcastle Trail, and the Drumheller Heath Centre on North Dinosaur Trail, east to Deer Valley Implements on Highway 10. A small section in Rosedale has also been mapped. South to north, Highway 9 South to Highway 9 North. If people want their area to be covered, they can let Google know and submit a request, they do warn they are dealing with a lot of requests so it may take time. On the other hand, if people are not happy with any pictures that show their property, vehicle, or their family, they can ask for them to be removed. To do this, they need to get to the photo they have concerns with, click on “Report a problem” located at the bottom-left of the image window, complete a form and click submit. Since starting the Street View project in 2007, Google has covered many countries and here are some of their ideas on how this can be used: • Explore parts of the world they’ve always wanted to visit - see famous sights such as the Big Ben, Sydney Opera House, Times Square, Eiffel Tower, Colosseum, and much more. • When people are on the go, they can use their mobile device to see what their transit stop looks like. If they look up directions, they can also see Street View images for every step along the way. • Check parking availability. Are there lots nearby? Check

of Drumheller as if they are walking or driving. This screenshot contains a clue to when the Google Street View car came to Drumheller.

in advance if a building provides easy access and wheelchair ramps for disabled persons. • Preview vacation accommodation. Google tells of various ways this tool can be used for business purposes: • Real estate agents and brokers can show prospective buyers or tenants available properties. Better yet, embed Street View images easily in their site with the Maps API. • Journalists can embed Street View images on their websites to show the location of news events. For example, The New York Times embedded a Street View image

to show the location of an earthquake in Italy. • Promote a business by showing them the building facade, nearby amenities, landmarks and lesser-known attractions. • Conduct virtual field trips. Schools can incorporate Street View on both Google Maps and Google Earth into geography and history lessons. On closer investigation of the shots, there are clues that the Street View vehicle went around Drumheller during the last week in June and some might have seen it. We ask readers to let us know if they can estimate when the Street View vehicle came through Drumheller.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper coming February 16 Submitted | Inside Drumheller l

Shrovetide is the last three or four days before the beginning of Lent. Are you giving up anything for Lent? Do you know what other people are giving up? Do you know why? Shrovetide was celebrated with games, sports and dancing. In keeping with its religious theme, Building our Life with Christ, St. Magloire’s Anglican Church will again be offering

Shrove Pancake Supper on Tuesday, February 16. You may be asking yourself, what is Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper? Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the period Christians call Lent. This day is one of the moveable feasts in the church calendar and is directly related to the date that Easter falls. The name Shrove Tuesday comes from the old word shrive, which means to confess. On Shrove Tuesday, in the

Middle Age, people used to confess their sins so they may be forgiven before the season of Lent began. Shrove Tuesday is also called Pancake Day or Mardi Gras in France, which means grease or Fat Tuesday. Pancakes are eaten on this day because they contain fat, butter and eggs, which were forbidden during Lent. The Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper will take place on Tuesday, February 16, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at St. Magloire’s Anglican Church.

Sunday is Valentine’s Day. What are you prepared to do show your sweetheart that she/he means something special to you? A heart shaped box of those waxy chocolates; a card with a sappy sentiment written by someone who doesn’t know you or your lovely; an ‘intimate’ dinner for two at the same crowded restaurant that every other “romantic” reserved table. Or, send the kids to the mother-in-law so you can fix a dinner for your wife, and then spend the evening roasting chestnuts on an open fire while you snuggle on the couch. Better yet, help your sweetheart with the housework, and then the two of you retire to a nice warm bath, accompanied by a good bottle of red wine, a cigar (one of you smokes), and Rod Stewarts Great America Songbook on the CD player. There, that’s a Valentine’s Day you will both appreciate and enjoy. Happy Valentine’s 6m Day!

EVERY LIFE SAVED STARTS WITH A DONATION.

Family Day is Monday, February 15! Enjoy a day of Family Fun!

by C. Aiello

A friend of mine who spends his winters in the States, dropped by Sunday for a drink and to yak. He had called me earlier in the week to ask if I was available to drive him into the airport on Monday, should his cousin not be available. I said that I was, and would drive if need be. Sunday he told me that he indeed needed me. I like highway driving. If it’s early enough and the day is right, i.e., sunny and calm, then a highway drive is one of the things I enjoy most in life. It is something that employs both mind and body, and when everything is right, you, your vehicle and the road become one, your spirit is free. When all of this is right, I want nothing to intrude and, not music, not speech (probably why I prefer to drive alone), only the sound of the engine and the road beneath me. My focus is totally consumed by the act of driving. It requires my full attention. Having all these elements come together however, is a rare thing. Monday morning my friend and I hit the road about 9:30. The conditions were not bad, no snow, no fog, no rain, but a pretty good head wind. I knew this would not be my kind of drive because my friend likes to make conversation. Its one of the things he is good at, and he knows me well enough not to expect too much in return. He talked, I listened and returned the odd remark, or answered his questions when asked. As we got close to the airport, I gave him his head, telling him to navigate, which is another thing he is good at. After reaching his particular terminal, my friend told me exactly how to get out of town without going down Deerfoot Trail. As my father always accuses me, I heard but I wasn’t listening. He got out of the car, I retrieved his baggage from the rear hatch, we shook hands and bid farewell. I’d see him in 8 weeks. As I pulled away from the terminal, I recalled him saying something about Barlow Trail. When I cleared the round about there was a sign “Barlow Trail North”. I thought, “That’s me”, and turned onto it. I drove several blocks not seeing any of the things I passed coming in. Then the sign, “City Center”. I knew right then that I had screwed myself. I kept driving, right up to a sign that said. “Memorial Drive”, and I thought “I want the hell out of here”, “Help”. There it was “Deerfoot Trail North, next exit”, the Lord heard this poor brain numb lubber and provided a way out. I thanked him, and proceeded. Deerfoot Trail is an unlovely piece of work, and on a day when it is covered with schmutz, and every vehicle is throwing it up on your windshield, it is an especially unlovely piece of work. Eighteen wheelers, trucks of all sizes, even cars can cover ones windshield with a mix of water, salt and dirt, obliterating your view at critical times, and all done at high speed. The exit sign to Irricana was most welcome. Once out of the city and the grasp of its tentacles. I could feel the tension slip away from me. Out of Airdrie and onto the open highway. Sliding the stick into 6th gear and letting that little 2 litre hum along at 120 put me back where I wanted to be, just me and my car, no schmutz, no music, no speech. Nirvana.

Sabres win Bassano tournament Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

The St. Anthony’s Sabres senior boys basketball team were crowned champions this weekend at a tournament in Bassano. The Sabres played in an eightteam tournament and were able to face some teams they may see again in the zone. “I’m happy the team was able to go away with the win,” said head coach Gavin Makse. "They

played hard when it counted.” The Sabres first faced the Brooks Composite High School Senior boys B team and more than doubled the Brooks team’s output winning 66-32. Anthony Merkel had 24 points and Brandon Gruber had 20 in the victory. This pit them up against Holy Cross Collegiate of Strathmore and the Sabres were trailing by half time. There was a scary moment midway through the first

half when a mid court collision sent shooting guard, Josh Mohan to the hospital for stitches. He was able to return and play in the final.

“This tournament shows we played as a second half team. If we are able to put together a full game playing at our best, we’ll be that much better a team.” Gavin Makse

Trevor Stahl made some crucial shots in the second half, and led the team with 10 points as they won 49-40. This set up the Sabres to face Duchess. This was an important game to the Sabres as they play in the same zone as Duchess, and a victory could prove important when teams are seeded come playoff time. The Sabres again trailed by two points at half time, but bounced back in the second half, as this time Merkel had the hot hand leading the team with 24. Gruber had 15 and Mohan, chipped in 11, including three from behind the three-point arch. The Sabres won 68-53. “This tournament shows we played as a second half team. If we are able to put together a full game playing at our best, we’ll be that much better a team,” said Makse.

Members of the team include (back; l-r) Josh Mohan, Derriston Baker, T.J Jones, Alex Cliche, Anthony Merkel, Brandon Gruber, Trevor Stahl and coach Gavin Makse, (with front; l-r) Mitch Barry, Andrew Stedman and Jordan Comstock, and Matt Russell, seated. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

He adds, it appeared the Sabres were playing down to their competition, at times only playing hard enough to win, or allowing the other team back in the game, when they should have had a wide point margin. The Sabres continued their winning ways on Tuesday, Febru-

ary 9 when they hosted Airdrie Koinonia. They handed the Airdrie team a 90 point drubbing, winning 124-34. Merkel was strong with 32 points, and Cliche scored 15. Every player on the team played and scored a basket before half time.

My dilemma for this weekend was deciding between a Valentine’s recipe and a Chinese New Year’s one since both these events are on February 14 this year. I thought perhaps the animal sign for the coming year would determine my recipe choice. Unfortunately, it is the year of the tiger Lori Stefanishion and I don’t have any good tiger meat recipes! inSide Drumheller So I have chosen a Valentine’s Brunch dish and a Chinese dinner Food Columnist one to combine both celebrations this weekend. 8 cups of bagel pieces (bite sized) - about 4-6 bagels 6 oz. cream cheese, cubed 4 oz. lox-style smoked salmon, cut into pieces 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion 4 teaspoons dried chives 8 eggs, lightly beaten 2 cups milk 1 cup cottage cheese 1 Tbsp. fresh dill freshly ground pepper Arrange half the bagel pieces in a greased 3 quart baking dish. Top with cheese, salmon, onion and chives. Arrange the remaining bagels over. In a bowl, combine eggs, milk, cottage cheese and dill. Pour over the ingredients in baking dish. Press lightly to moisten all the bagel pieces. Cover and chill from 4-24 hours. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes or until a knife inserted in centre comes out clean and edges are puffed and golden. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving. This makes a large amount, so you may want to halve the recipe.

2 cups flour 2 Tbsp. cornstarch 2 eggs 2 cups raw medium shrimp, peeled and chopped 4 green onions, chopped 2 red or jalapeno peppers, seeded and sliced 3 Tbsp. oil Whisk flour and cornstarch. Stir in 2 cups ice water until smooth. Beat in the eggs just until blended. Stir in shrimp, onion and peppers. Heat 1 Tbsp. oil in a frying pan. Drop in batter, 1 Tbsp. per pancake and cook, turning once until top is set and bottom is golden - about 5 minutes. Serve hot or room temperature with Garlic soy sauce: 1/4 cup soy sauce 4 tsp. rice vinegar 2 tsp. sesame oil 2 cloves garlic, minced *I wasn’t sure if my company would like the peppers, so I left them out. I also used precooked shrimp and it was just fine. A nice stir fry of vegetables would compliment this dish. For a heartier meal, you could also serve another dish such as sweet and sour chicken over rice, ginger beef, ribs or a chow mein.

inSideDrumheller.com - inSide | Drumheller

Full Name: Jeff Brooks Job: Social Studies teacher at Drumheller Composite High School. How old are you? 26. How long have you been in Drumheller? Just 5 months. What do you like best about Drumheller? The people, they have been very welcoming! Also, the landscape is really beautiful! If you could change one thing about Drumheller, what would it be? I would move it to the ocean…Can I do that? Where were you originally from? My home town is Lethbridge, Alberta, however, I have also lived in Calgary and most recently in Victoria, British Columbia. What do you like about your job? The staff has been amazing! I love the kids and I love social studies! What do you do in your spare time? In my spare time, I snow-

board, mark student assignments, hang out with friends and family, play guitar…watch DVDs. I just recently started watching the 24 series, and I also really enjoy LOST. If you were granted three wishes, what would they be? I would wish for an end to sickness, poverty and hatred. What’s your favourite movie and why? My favorite movie without a doubt is Braveheart! I love the courage in the character of William Wallace. He was a warrior-poet and an inspiration for my own life. What would you like to achieve this year? My hope for this year is to make a lot of great memories! Has reading a book ever changed your life? if yes, which one? Rachel’s Tears! And yes, it totally changed my life! I would recommend this book to everyone!

If you were reborn, who or what would you want to be reborn as? I would be reborn as a dolphin. They get to play in the ocean all day, and they always look so darn happy! If you could choose one super power, which would it be? Flying would be pretty awesome! If you found a $100 bill what would you do? Keep it…oops did I say that? If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? Travel the world, over and over again! If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would you do? If I could be Prime Minister for a day I would visit our fighting men and women in Afghanistan. I would thank them for their sacrifice to our great country! Words to live by? “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21.
