inSideOPINIONS inSide STREETERS Since the Vancouver 2010 Olympics opened, there has been a lot of negative press internationally about various aspects of the event. inSide Drumheller asked residents, "Do you feel the negative press the 2010 Olympics has received is justified?"

Carol Eeftens “When there was the problem with seeing the Torch properly at the beginning, I think the complaining was justified then but definitely not now, they bent over backwards to appease everybody.”

Jean-Pierre Oliviero “No, I really don’t think it is justified.”

So far almost $1.4 million has been raised for the Badlands Community Facility. There are a number of contribution levels for private in-

dividuals as well as businesses to give. For more information contact fundraising committee chair Jeff Hall at 403-823-7800.

The Fundraising Committee for the Badlands Community Facility is pleased to announce that the fundraising campaign is progressing very well. As of this date, nearly $1.4 million dollars has been raised for the facility. Chairperson of the fundraising committee, Jeff Hall stated, “We are pleased with the public and corporate response. Our committee is concentrating on making personal contact with various businesses in Drumheller. We want to give these businesses the opportunity to review the different sponsorship programs that are available”. The fundraising committee will be in touch with approximately 20-25 business-

es per month. If you would like to discuss a contribution immediately, contact Jeff Hall at 403-823-7800, and arrangements will be made to meet with a representative from the committee. Individuals and corporations have various levels of contribution available to them: A corporation can choose from categories that include; • Contributor Level • Partner Level • Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Premier Level. Naming Rights: an individual can choose from the following categories • Friend • Supporter • Patron • Sponsor • Benefactor • Philanthropist For those corporations and individuals who donate to the facility, tax deductible receipts are available. The process to make a donation is easy.

After the initial contact with the fundraising committee has been made and you are ready to make your donation, we will arrange for a photo and interview opportunity. Your company will be included in various media releases that are distributed to all media in Drumheller. All donors will also receive name recognition in the facility. The construction of the Badlands Community Facility is progressing on schedule. The architect firm of Graham Edmunds Cartier is currently working on the design. In March 2010 there will be an open house to showcase the design. The construction will start with a field house, running track, fitness centre, meeting facilities and a new public library followed by an arena and curling rink as funding becomes available.

Marina Paarup “I think the English press was very tabloidish and it wasn’t justified.”

Dena Esary “Most of it is about how much money they have spent in Vancouver. I was born and raised there so I am really happy about it as it will provide lots of new facilities and it will be good for tourism. As for the rest of the bad press, every Olympics every four years gets picked on.”

At the February 16, 2010 Town of Drumheller Council Meeting, Council agreed unanimously to appoint a task force to review parking options on the portion of 3rd Avenue between 2nd Street West and 1st Street East. This Task Force will consist of two Councillors, two members of the Chamber of Commerce, two members of the Downtown Drumheller Merchants Committee and two members of the public at large. Travel Alberta assists owners, visitors Pascale Taylor | Inside Drumheller

Travel Alberta came to the Ramada in Drumheller on Wednesday, February 24 during their tour of the province, to make business owners aware of the marketing potential Travel Alberta can provide to businesses in the tourism industry. Travel Alberta is the tourism marketing agency of the Government of Alberta, its mission is to manage the investment of Tourism Levy revenues effectively and efficiently in tourism marketing programs and services. The agency re-invests the revenue into developing the tourism industry within Alberta, which represents a big share of the market and also markets Alberta to the rest of the world. came to hear Travel Alberta’s update and learn about the tools available to improve their revenue. Shelley Grollmuss, regional executive director of Travel Alberta explained “We need to sell Canada first, then Alberta and finally your product”. Recently, they have entered into discussions with China to be able to market the area there and are hopeful to sign a contract soon. Recent news in the flight industry is also opening doors to Alberta as a destination, Air Canada is starting a flight from Tokyo to Calgary, three times a week, while Korean Airlines is starting a summer charter. sterdam, giving them access to the whole of Europe. During 2010, they are also concentrating their efforts on the British Columbia market, so far achieving $50 million in unpaid media as a result of their efforts for coverage during the Olympics and managing to retain their brand advertising via the Vancouver to Whistler daily shuttle train until October 2010. They advised they would invest in a $2 million advertising campaign in BC too this year. While they are busy tapping into the international market and other provinces and developing a strong brand, they offer schemes and tools for local businesses to help them better market themselves and achieve higher revenue, often at no cost to the business. One of such offerings is their cooperative marketing, which is not only a financial help they provide to industry consortium, they will also advise and assist every step of the project. To be considered, the consortia group needs to be a group of at least three partners, with a project which goal is to increase tourism marketing for the region. The consortia needs to fund half of the investment required and submit a business plan for consideration. If successful, Travel Alberta will provide up to the second

half together with all the expertize available, even at business planning stage. “Canadian Badlands” is the result of such consortia with eight business members. It is also worth noting that members are not required to invest an equal share, so smaller businesses can also benefit from joining a larger consortia. Another of their tools designed to help any tourism businesses tap in the current trend of perceived value is a “holiday card”, advertised to consumers as the source for “Alberta’s Best Holiday Value”. After a simple and free registration, consumers receive a holiday card which gives them access to all the special deals on offer. As a business owner, there is a choice of two holiday card offers to advertise: providing a minimum 10 per cent saving on your best offer for a particular product or service, or a last minute special which gives the consumer a 25 per cent discount. Travel Alberta advertises all special offers via monthly newsletters sent to all their cardholders, recording a higher than average open and clickthrough rates. They are also promoting this product via newspaper advertisements as well as online, radio and TV advertising. Travel Alberta has issued 175,000 holiday cards so far and business owner Zeke Wolf,

owner of the Inn at Heartwood uses the scheme and told inSide Drumheller “from our point of view, it gives us an avenue to put a special offer forward to a group of people who we know are out there, looking for specials. This initiative does an excellent job for all of us, for everyone in the tourism business and for the people that travel, I just think that what they are doing is a very good thing. We should all benefit and take advantage, it’s there for us.” Having had a lot of dealings with Travel Alberta, Wolf said, “I find them very very helpful, eager to help...they want to help! They have the right mentality, they have goverment money to spend and they want to spend it, and they will help you in any way they can, whether it’s for advice or assistance. This is a way to get the tourism levy we collect back.” Travel Alberta offers many other tools such as a speaker series, workshops, consumer shows all targeted at enhancing businesses marketing potential. They also provide consumers access to a tourism database, called Tourism Information System (TIS) where you can list your product, event etc for free as well update the information yourself. Wolf concluded: “Anything Travel Alberta do, you need to go and partake, because it’s free and it’s valuable.”

Travel Alberta gave a presentation on Wednesday, February 24, to update business owners of their progress within the tourism industry and raise awareness of the various tools Travel Alberta offers to help tourism businesses improve their revenue. In the photo, Shelley Grollmuss, regional executive director of Travel Alberta explains Travel Alberta’s 2010 marketing plan. inSide photo Pascale Taylor

Drumheller artist scores high with North America Body Painting Competition judges Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

While most people were thinking of ways to impress their significant other during the Valentine’s Day weekend, Drumheller resident, Lucie Brouillard, was busy painting (near) naked bodies in Vegas. Using sponge and brush techniques, she spent 6 hours on both Saturday and Sunday painting her visions on two themes, first on “A ro u n d the World" and then “Evolution” on models at the first ever North America Body Painting Championship, where body painters from all over the world competed in two categories: Sponge/Brush and Airbrush. Using the “classic” style, industry term for sponge /brush painting, and her interpretation of the themes, she won first prize, making it her 13th prize at top body painting competitions. Lucie fell into body painting by chance over 20 years ago. Back from a year in Europe after getting her BA in Fine Arts in Quebec, where she originates from, Lucie was looking for a way to make a living. As she had a keen interest in theatre makeup, a friend suggested she borrow her crayons and face paint at the Montreal Jazz Festival to earn herself some money. The suggestion paid off. Lucie then took her skills to Europe, where she lived in Holland for 10 years and face/body painted across Europe and the world, before returning to Canada and

settling in Calgary. Two and half years ago, she and her family decided to move to Drumheller to provide their children a safer environment as well as for real estate opportunities. She now body and face paints at corporate events and teaches the art at conventions. In 2007, motivated by a desire to find out where she ranked “just for fun”, Lucie decided to enter the biggest championship she could find and tried out at the Seeboden World Championships in Austria. At this first attempt, she won third prize in the Body Painting Brush and Sponge category and 2nd place in FacePainting. Since then, Lucie has won many trophies in Canadian, American and World Body and Face Painting championships and is currently the World Face Painting Champion. What she found she liked about body painting 20 years ago is what still motivates her today: the people she works with. “You make them nice and it’s almost therapy for both, because you exchange good vibes. If I work a lot, say a busy day of 8 hours straight, my body will be very tired but not my mind, and my heart will be nice and happy because the experience has been good, you have been told that you are good, you make people feel good. I don’t think there’s a job that makes you feel nicer. All in all, it’s a nice circle of people, we all deal with very gentle people, it’s a small but nice community.” As well as enjoying the connection with people, her favourite part is still doing face painting on children, especially more so now she has two of her own, Alex, three and a half, (aka “The Tank”), and Charlotte, who is about to turn five.

“Now that I have my own kids, I see even more the pleasure on their faces when I paint them and they become a creature, they light up. It’s the nicest gift I can give that makes me feel so good. It’s the same for adults, they get the feeling of fantasy or escape.” Those competitions give her the platform to express herself as a storyteller as well as an artist. Lucie claims the secret for a good body painting at competitions is “to be so ready, know your story, know your drawing months ahead of time and, using your own body painting, paint on paper and test how everything will work together. Don’t leave anything to coincidence or improvisation as this is when you make mistakes.” She also believes her success is due to her secret tool: her stories, “I am an okay painter, but I think it is the fact that I’m convinced and I try to paint something that is meaningful. It’s my way of expressing my political views, things I disagree with, things I love. I like to tell a story almost like an essay but with painting, with a beginning, a middle and it has to have a conclusion.” Her secret tool seemed to have come up trumps at the latest competition she entered. The theme she worked on during the first day of the competition was “A r o u n d the World”, a theme she found very touching. Through her painting, she chose to showcase “Four women who could never dream of attending such an event because of old age or cultural or religious obstacles, one of the women (from Haiti) was in tears as she had lost everything.” The women were visible below painted drapes, which Lucie explains was something that had never been done before.

Once the painting was complete, Lucie told her story: “My opening line was ‘let’s take a peek through the curtains of the world, and look at those women and thank them as women are the ones who keep the world going around, they pick up pieces after wars, carry babies...they are beautiful, anonymous, hard working queens’, that was a sort of tribute to women around the world.” Lucie received 992 points out of 1000 for this interpretation of the theme. This was also her proudest achievement, she calls the piece “near perfect.” She depicted another powerful story on day two based on “Evolution”. “I chose to talk about evolution as life on earth, I went from the big bang and mountains emerging, vegetation and all kind of animals coming and evolving from insects to fish, to birds, to mammals. Then around the belly was a drastic line, with buildings, us, civilization, and I said ‘Here we are, we are the new kids on the block, we are only a few thousand years old and we are destroying everything, we are stopping this evolution’.” At the top of the buildings, a naked man is climbing and choking the neck of the model with a rope. On the face of the model, Lucie had painted Mother Earth. On the back, a tornado could be seen, with its base coming from the lower back, a woman trying to get out of the tornado, with the buildings from the front falling into it. Those two representations put Lucie well ahead of the competition and won her first prize in the Brush and Sponge category. The Airbrush category was won by another Canadian, Alexander Hansen. Lucie’s ambition this year is to win the Body Painting World Champion title in Sponge and Brush, having attended third three years running.

WHOare you? 8 - Friday, February 26, 2010

Theresa Catonio

Name: Theresa Theresa Catonio Age: 28. Job title: Career advisor. Employer: M.H. Enterprises. How long have you been in Drumheller? Born and raised here, then bounced around Alberta for a while before coming back a year ago. What do you like best about Drumheller? That feeling of “home” Drum gives me...and being close to my family and my super awesome nephews (Pax and Copp)! If you could change one thing about Drumheller what would it be? I wouldn’t, I like it as it is, I wish there were more constructive things to do though. What do you like about your job? I love my team at MH! We have the best boss lady ever, I

couldn’t have a better group of people to spend my days with. What do you do in your spare time? Spend time with friends and family, I also have a couple of part time jobs, I work at DARTS and I am a family support worker too so not much spare time. What’s the most important decision you have ever made? Coming home was a pretty big decision, but not the most important. I haven’t really had any big enough decision to change my life yet! What would you like to achieve this year? A positive change of any kind, I am open to anything that is a step forward for me. What’s your favourite movie and why? My favourite movie is so ridiculous that I will leave it a mystery...just to save face!

What’s on your playlist? A bit W o of everything, except Country, I aam not a Country girl at all! H Has reading a book ever cchanged your life? If yes, w which one? I have read a lot but I don’t know if I am reading the wrong books but I have never read w aanything overly life changing, I ttake a little from everything. IIf you could choose one super p power, which would it be? To rread people’s minds, I would be tthe ultimate eavesdropper! IIf you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? Travel the w world. w IIf you were reborn, who would y you want to be reborn as? Mysself, I’d just do some things differeent next time around. IIf you could travel back in time a and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you o give yourself? To slow down, and soak it in, take in the moment and be more present because I find, as a grown up, where did the time go? So I would like to tell myself, ‘look around’. If you could be Prime Minister for a day, what would you do? I am so uninterested in politics, I would not care to be the Prime Minister for a day. If you could retire tomorrow, what would you do? First I’d sleep in, until at least midday, then I would go hang with my nephews, then I would take an Alberta road trip and visit my peeps. Words to live by? "Love is the answer."

Lori Stefanishion inSide Drumheller Food Columnist This is a quick dish and a change from lasagne. If you use a spinach/ricotta ravioli you will get more of a lasagne flavor. Don’t overcook this. I froze it and cooked it too long to reheat it - it might as well have been lasagne! Baked Beef Ravioli 2 - 9 oz. pkgs. fresh cheese -filled ravioli 1 ½ lb. ground beef 1 cup chopped onion 6 cloves garlic, minced 1 - 14oz. can diced tomatoes 1 can tomato soup 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese ½ cup shredded Parmesan cheese Cook ravioli according to package directions. Drain and keep warm. Cook ground beef, onion and garlic until meat is brown and onion tender. Drain off fat. Stir in tomatoes, soup and seasonings. Gently stir in the ravioli. Transfer to an ungreased 3 quart baking dish. Sprinkle with the cheeses. Bake uncovered 20 minutes at 375. 8m I used a 9x13 pan. Served with caesar salad and garlic toast, made for nice “comfort food.”

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

My old friend John dropped around the other day for a little socializing and a very little drink (he was driving). He and I take turns dropping in on one another. He is by far the more interesting conversationalist, but I do my best to hold my own. John has a few years on me and is more travelled than I, and has a pretty good knowledge of most things. He’s a good friend whose company I very much enjoy. When John and I get together, we invariably discuss the issues of the day, be it local, provincial, national or otherwise, but usually sticking pretty close to the local scene. Well, the other day we got talking about the railroad the farmers want to buy. It’s an expensive proposition, but one we both agreed was a pretty good one. After all, rail is the cheapest way to move grain, and this province, this community in particular is a grain community. Farmers being farmers, these guys aren’t looking at next year, they are looking out 10, 20, even 30 years, to the point where this rail will haul tourists, coal and other commodities. It’s something that if not needed now, certainly will be needed in the future. Today there are fewer and fewer grain elevators and storage facilities, as the grain companies try to centralize. This means the farmer must truck his grain farther and farther from the point of origin, necessitating the purchase of trucks capable of hauling huge loads, fuel for such vehicles, and the pounding they inflict on our highways. Most of this could be mitigated with the use of hauling over rail. It will save the grain producer time and money over the long term and what grain producer plans for the short term? The Town of Drumheller should be a willing partner in the purchase, or at least the promotion of this rail line. John and I both thought that was a good idea. The Town should be promoting and supporting the purchase in any way it can. More than one prairie town has dried up and blown away due to lack of rail service. That’s an unlikely possibility, but at the same time, rail service is an attraction to certain types of business which view the valley as an opportunity. Anything that will bring business to the valley should not be discouraged. 8s

Fake grass, an environmental alternative Once reserved for baseball fields and indoor football stadiums, synthetic grass, commonly referred to as “fake grass,” can now be purchased by private citizens as well. While synthetic grass has evolved over the years, the principle of providing a realistic and aesthetically appealing alternative to natural grass is still the same. One thing that might be changing is the way people look at synthetic grass, particularly with respect to its environmental impact. While a common objection to synthetic grass is that it negates the positive effects grass has on the environment, namely its intake of potentially harmful carbon dioxide, it’s important to note the conservation value that synthetic grass provides. Synthetic grass does not need to be watered or mowed, helping to conserve water and fuel. In fact, a synthetic lawn might help homeowners save more than 20,000 gallons of water per year. That makes synthetic grass an especially viable option in areas that routinely suffer from drought and often require heavy watering just to keep a lawn going strong. In addition, synthetic grass does not require the use of potentially harmful pesticides to maintain its aesthetic appeal. Homeowners should also consider the life span of synthetic grass. Synthetic grass can last anywhere from 15 years to several decades, making it a potentially more attractive option than many homeowners might initially think.

Town’s toilet rebate program in place Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

If you weren’t able to take advantage of the Town of Drumheller’s toilet rebate program last year, it has returned. Last summer, the Town of Drumheller introduced the program where residents who purchase a new, higher efficiency toilet for their home,

can apply for a rebate from the Town of Drumheller towards the purchase. There was a modest uptake of the program in 2009 with 44 residents getting a rebate. They have reintroduced the program for this year. The Town is offering $50 to homeowners who replace high flow toilets (13 litres or greater) with a six litre single Action Number. 0901-02095

flush toilet, and a $75 rebate if the owner purchases a dual flush toilet with an output of three litres and six litres. While the rebate is a great savings, it pales in comparison to the savings consumers can realize by buying a high efficiency toilet. Replacing just one, 20 litre toilet with an efficient six litre low flow toilet will save approximately 25,550 litres of water per person every year. This would also result in further savings on a Water and Sewer Utility Bill of approximately $66.54 per person every year. (Based on 2009 rates). Any resident, within the Town of Drumheller, who has a current utility account can apply for one rebate per household. Applications are available online at www.di-

nosaurvalley.com, or at Town Hall. The Town emphasizes a resident must be pre-approved before they purchase and install a qualifying toilet. A list of qualifying toilets, approved by the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association performance standards

is available at Town Hall or at www.dinosaurvalley.com. Applicants must attach the original receipt and photo to their application form and return to Town Hall no later than December 31, 2010.

Residents can get up to$75 back from the Town of Drumheller if they decide to replace a high flow toilet with a new low flow style. The will also realize a savings on their water bill. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Can I give my child medicine for fever if he or she is already taking an antibiotic? What happens if he or she throws up after taking a dose or can’t (or won’t) swallow the medicine? M.K Yes, an oral analgesic can be given to reduce fever in children receiving antibiotics. Two options are acetaminophen (brand Tylenol or Tempra) or ibuprofen (brand Advil or Motrin). No one brand is any more effective then the other. And if one is not working well enough, you can actually give both acetaminophen and ibuprofen to bring down a fever or help with pain because they work in different ways. You could give them at the same time, but I usually recommend staggering the doses for more constant pain/fever control. It is important to not exceed each medication’s daily recommended dose. As well, it is always best to dose by weight instead of age, as this is a more accurate dose in children. If your child is unable to swallow, there is an acetaminophen suppository available for children over 1 year of age. If your child throws up immediately or within a few minutes of receiving their dose, you may be able to re-administer the dose. Anything beyond that time, and it would be best to wait the 4 to 6 hours for the next dose because they may have already absorbed the majority of the dose depending on the medication; therefore it is always best to check with your doctor or pharmacist. If your child continues to throw up the medication, you may consider administering a gravol suppository 30 minutes prior to their oral medications. Gravol suppositories are available for children 2 and up from behind the counter at our pharmacy. I am unable to afford my medicine because the prices are too high. Are there any programs to help me?, thank you. C.C There are a few options available to increase affordability of medications. If you find that you have high drug costs and are struggling to keep up with the monthly expenses, you could apply for private insurance such as Blue Cross. There are many different plans out there which would provide services for a monthly premium. Some plans may have exclusions for some medications if you have a pre-existing condition, some may require you to pay a deductible at the start of every year, and some may require you to pay a percentage of the cost of each medication, so there are many important questions to ask before going with such a plan. Alternatively, if you are unable to afford private insurance, you can apply for coverage through a government program where assistance may be given out based on financial need. The Drumheller FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) is set to introduce a personal safety and education program to local Grade 4 students. Drumheller FCSS will present each student with a copy of Personal Safety for Kids, a 136-page handbook that features information about safety in the home, at school, in traffic, on the street, at play, and among strangers.

Produced by Gateway Community Safety Net, the program contains lessons and fun exercises that reinforce the rules of self protection. Also included is an educational DVD that features animated characters, interactive games, and quizzes. It connects to the Community Safety Net website, where kids can enter online contests and win great prizes. The materials have been provided thanks to the generous support of local busi-

nesses and organizations. An excellent resource for parents, the program contains important telephone numbers as well as websites for more help. Every day, more than 43,000 North American children are injured seriously enough to need emergency room attention. According to the World Health Organization, “Almost all accidents are preventable and education is the most effective way to prevent them from happening.”

between the game inside the boards and life outside the rink that make hockey such a special game,” said award recipient Evan Warner. “In countless ways, hockey contributes to the character of a player both on and off the ice. I believe hockey is not just a game, it is an illustration of what a player is on the inside, a test of moral character. Hockey is an exercise in bettering yourself as a human being.” Chad Berglund of the Olds Grizzlys was the 2008-2009 recipient of the Stewy Stewart Memorial Trophy. Knelsen continues to shine as Nanook Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

Former Drumheller Dragon Dion Knelsen continues to shine and this week he was selected, along with two teammates, for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Player of the Week honours.

Dion Knelsen… CCHA offensive player of the week

Knelsen, a senior at the University of Alaska Fairbanks earned the offensive player of the week. His sophomore teammate Scott Greenham is the Reebok Goalie of the Week and freshman Andy Taranto is the CCM Rookie of the Week for the week of February 22. The trio played a big hand in helping the then-ranked No. 20 Nanooks to a series sweep of the Lake Superior State Lakers last weekend at the Carlson Center. Alaska blanked LSSU 4-0 on Friday and then sealed the deal with a 5-1 triumph on Saturday. It helped them climb three spots to No. 17 in this week’s USCHO.com/CBS Online Poll and to No. 11 in the unofficial Men’s Division I PairWise Rankings. Knelsen had a goal, four assists and a plus three rating on

He is second on the team in scoring, seventh in the CCHA for points, tied for third in CCHA goals. The No. 17 Nanooks closeout their regular-season schedule this weekend with a home-and-home series against their arch-rivals the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves for the 17th Annual Alaska Airline’s Governor’s Cup series. The series is tied 8-8 and the Nanooks are looking to snap the Seawolves four-year streak by capturing their first Governor’s Cup since 2005.
