“The Lord hates a coward,” Rod Morse mutters quietly to himself as he takes one last look at the silver locks and bushy beard he has been growing for months in anticipation of Cuts 4 Cancer. Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, Morse ambled his way into the barber chair to go under the clippers in support of those fighting cancer. After some last ditch pleas for mercy, the familiar buzzing of clippers, and in minutes it was all over. Rod pledged to put a bounty on his hair and beard for this year’s Cuts 4 Cancer. The annual event has become a major fundraiser for the Drumheller and Area Health Foundation, and has given thousands of dollars to local projects to benefit cancer patients and their families. Chop Shop owner, Cathy Morse, began the event in memory of her mother Rose Schinnour who passed way from cancer. More than a year ago, Rod’s father also succumbed to cancer, and this helped prompt him into the seat to have his hair cut. His tally has topped $4,100 and counting. Along the way, he collected dozens of pledges with the promise to the top bidder they would be first to take a swipe at Rod’s hair. That top bidder was Scott McKay Contracting, and Joyce McKay, with clippers in hand took the first swipe. After that, Rod’s daughter Courtney, and wife Cathy took over.

Every year the Chop Shop dedicates the funds from haircuts to the Health Foundation. More and more, every year customers, rather than just jumping into the barber’s chair, collect pledges and go all the way in getting their hair shorn. Beside Rod in the chair was Constable Mark Logan of the Drumheller RCMP. He raised about $300 as stylists took his hair down to bare skin, all the while worrying if his locks will grow back before his impending nuptials. This was the second year Walter Albrecht collected pledges to shave his unmistakable beard. He has been growing it since September and on Wednesday morning, he passed over $1,577. The trio of Wacy Sandum, Jayden Nail and his father Russell Nail combined to raise $1,475, Dylan Cole raised $2,000. Maddie Davies 16, repeated a tradition. Three years ago she donated her hair to Angel Hair for Kids to make wigs for children in need, and this year she repeated the task. Along the way, she raised $782 for the Cuts 4 Cancer event. She received a great donation from members of the Hussar 4-H Horse Club. These are just a few of those who went under the scissors for cancer. The Drumheller Co-op and Freson IGA gave to the event by donating fruit and sandwiches to keep the stylists’ energy up for the marathon day behind the chair.

DCHS set to start 2010-11 school year in new quarters Pascale Taylor| Inside Drumheller

When the doors of the refurbished Drumheller Composite High School (DCHS) open, the most noticable change will probably be the abundance of natural light. There are many improvements being implemented to achieve this, the main one being the addition of a skylight

over the library. Dan Root, superintendent of Lear Construction Management Ltd. and Les Denomme, assistant director of facilities for Golden Hills School Division took a delegation from DCHS, Mayor Nimmo and CAO Ray Romanetz on a tour of the building site on Friday, January 29 to show the

Ask Your Pharmacist?

Q:

When I pick up a prescription, and it is a new medication what are the three top questions to ask my pharmacist to find out more about it? A.T

A:

The top 3 questions to ask the pharmacist when picking up a new prescription are: 1) what sort of improvements can I expect from this medication; 2) when can I expect to notice these improvements; and 3) what sort of side effects or adverse reactions could I experience from this medication. I try to touch on these points with all of my patients when they receive a new prescription, but it’s often easier to address specific questions and provide additional information if the patient takes the initiative to find out about their medications too.

Q:

Why do over-the-counter nasal sprays say you should not use for more than three days in a row? If I’m breathing much better while using it, what will happen? W.U

Linsay Pillan Pharmacist

A:

Lotto Centre

The packaging on over-the-counter, or OTC, nasal sprays that contain a decongestant, such as xylometazoline, will read as such: “Caution: Prolonged or excessive use may cause an increase in nasal congestion. If symptoms persist for more than 3 days, consult a physician.” There is a very good reason for these warnings that most patients don’t realize. Using such a product for more than a brief time period can lead to something called Rebound Congestion. Patients will begin to experience the same sort of symptoms (stuffy nose and headaches) after they stop using the product, and often times, the longer the product was used for, the worse the rebound symptoms are. It can eventually lead to continuous use, simply because the patient does not want to experience the side effects of going off the medication. If you have been using a product like this for a number of weeks, months, or years, I recommend trying to slowly wean yourself off as opposed to quitting “cold turkey”. Using a normal saline nose spray during this time can help to prevent some of the drying and irritation that will come with stopping the decongestant spray. Giftware

progress and explain the many new features being introduced. “When the welders were working on a section of the skylight structure, they were aware of the smouldering and had fire extinguishers ready, however, they were not aware the fire had started on the roof”. Dan Root

Many challenges were encountered working with the existing structure to create a super structure strong enough to carry the weight of the library skylight. As Root explained, working with both old and new types of material was a big challenge as new welders run hotter and continuous compared with the older type used when the school was built over 40 years ago. This particular challenge was highlighted when two fires started on the roof. Root explained, “When the welders were working on a section of the skylight structure, they were aware of the smouldering and had fire extinguishers ready, however, they were not aware the fire had started on the roof." The other main new feature is the heat pump system which will be used to heat as well as cool down the building. Root explained they will be using hot water boilers and heat pumps to provide a more efficient air movement system. However, as airflow needs space to have distance, the ducting units were quite large and he said it had been quite a challenge fitting the units in the ceiling space available. Presently, the work is now concentrated on finishing the ground floor so the fire spray can be done and they will then be able to start work on the second floor. On that floor, the new data room will be located and will provide all communications network, including internet access, VOIP, wireless and will house the servers. When asked about energy saving, Root clarified, “The energy saving will come mainly from a technological point of view as

(l-r) Ray Romanetz, CAO, Mayor Bryce Nimmo, with Drumheller Composite High School associate principals Curtis LaPierre and Don Ewing following the DCHS site visit. inSide photo by Pascale Taylor

all the technology and all the equipment is going to be feeding off the power and is going to be more efficient.” Another element added will be the finish used for the flooring, a self levelling material which is much stronger than normal concrete and provides a very smooth finish. There will also be sliding doors to segregate Kaleidoscope Theatre from the rest of the school when in use. Construction work has come across other challenges mainly due to natural conditions. The cold weather has affected the brick and concrete work which needs to be done in a heated tent during colder temperatures. The gymnasium’s footing was probably the biggest challenge. Due to the expected load applied to it, they had to dig up to 50 feet deep to put in

115 pilings, coming across sandstone plates at about five to six meters down, with some having sandstone the entire way. They had expected to complete this work in 10 days but it took six weeks to finish, although Root was happy to report they managed to make the time up in other areas. Despite those challenges, Root is expecting work to complete on schedule, with the transition set up for November. With a further month to finish any commissioning, it is hoped the DCHS will be able to move to their new quarters during the Christmas break of 2010. Don Hartman, director of facilities for Golden Hills School Division, told inSide Drumheller, “The project is still on track, the overall project was approximately just under $20,000,000 and we are on track.”

Dan Root, site superintendent from Lear Construction Management Ltd. explains the challenges faced building the new roof of the library at DCHS during a site visit, January 29. inSide photo by Pascale Taylor

If you could travel back in time and meet yourself as a 10 year old kid, what advice would you give to yourself? Do not start smoking!

WHOare you? by C. Aiello

I want to start off with something that might make you smile, even snicker. I took it from the Co-op Newsletter. It’s Jeff Foxworthy applying his infamous, “ You might be a Redneck” routine to Canadians. • If you’ve ever worn shorts and a parka at the same time, you might be Canadian. • If you measure distance in hours, you might be Canadian. • If you’ve switched from “Heat” to “A/C” in the same day, and back again, you might be Canadian. • If you drive 60 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging blizzard, without flinching, you might be Canadian. • If you design your kid’s Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit you might be Canadian. • If you find -2 degrees a “little chilly”, you might be Canadian. Brother, by the sound of these you’ll think we lived in a frozen wasteland fit only for penguins and polar bears. Mr. Foxworthy has one that covers that. • If you know all 4 seasons: Almost winter, winter, still winter, and road construction, you might be Canadian. I believe Mr. Foxworthy nailed it, for a southern redneck anyway, because if you can relate to all or any of these, you might be Canadian.

I like the T.V show Law & Order, and all its spin-offs. The acting is good, the characters are interesting, and the story lines are engaging. The shows include a little of everything, murder, incest, adultery, romance, friendship, manipulation, social evils, family problems, you name it, Law & Order has dealt with it. The other night I sat there watching L & O, and the case brought up some questions in my mind. There was a man and wife who owned a restaurant franchise. If they divorced they would lose the franchise. The woman wanted a divorce, the husband did not. They had been separated for several months, but had seen each other a couple of times, one of which resulted in the woman becoming pregnant. That’s where it starts to get dicey. The woman decided she wanted an abortion, the husband did not want her to have an abortion, and took her to court to prevent it. In the U.S. a fetus has no rights, not even the one to be born, leaving the judge no choice but to allow the woman to abort. The woman however, as is a woman’s wont changed her mind, and decides to keep the baby, at which point her husband “outs” her, she is an alcoholic, and her drinking may do irreparable harm to the fetus. He seeks a court order to keep her from drinking, failing that, he wants her charged with endangering the life of an infant. And that is where the rubber meets the road. In the U.S. a woman has the right to an abortion, as the fetus is not considered a human life until it exits the womb. According to some, it is no more then a clump of cells, and so to abort is nothing more than to rid the body of unwanted material. That is why I fail to understand how a woman could be charged with endangering the life of an infant due to alcohol consumption, when what she is carrying is not yet considered to be a human life. It cannot be both ways. That clump of cells is either a human life or it isn’t. Alcohol consumption will cause no harm to a clump of cells one intends to abort. On the other hand, if carried to term and delivered, alcohol consumption may very well cause physical deformity or mental problems. For those who believe: it is a life worthy of the sanctity, care and respect accorded any other human life. For those who don’t believe, it is no more than the unwanted result of a haphazard sexual encounter, to be gotten rid of as one chooses. To my horror, there are at least 100,000 of these haphazard “hook ups”, resulting in the loss of that many new Canadians every year. Oh well, that’s life (and not just a clump of cells). 5m

For instance, visit the Chiropractic Wellness Centre, as Dr. Imran Dharshi explains “Doctors can give you a new set of teeth, replace your eye if necessary, they can even replace your heart but they can’t replace your spine so you need to get it checked regularly and that’s where we come in, we are here to help your body help yourself.” Don’t forget that such treatments are often covered under your medical insurance. Book a babysitter and go out for dinner with friends or to the theatre. Making time for your own personal needs will give you an opportunity to relax, refocus, and recharge. As you declutter, you will get a sense of relief and space, and it is probably the easiest way to relieve stress and you can even make some money in the process. Start preparing for the spring clear up when the town offers a free service to remove your junk. If it isn’t junk, what about giving it to the Salvation Army or Just You and I? Or how about organizing a big yard sale with your friends? Go through your clothes too, do you really need to keep that top that you have had for years? Or that other one that has never fitted right? Have your children grown out of some of their clothes too? Is it time to let go of some of your worn out favourite shoes? Take half a day to sort out your paperwork and find a good filing system that will be easily accessible and will ensure you stay on top of the paperwork so it isn’t such a big task. Sort out your empty bottles, a quick way to declutter and make money too – did you know the DARTS bottle depot now offers a pick up service at the cost of a percentage of money made? Hopefully those tips and resources should get you started on the way to a more organized life and help you find peace in your home. Me time: don’t forget to spend time just for you. CLUE ACROSS

Here’s How It Works:

1. Ancient queen of the gods

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 It'll take a while for you to get moving this week, Aries, but once you do, there will be no stopping you. Pace yourself, however, or you could burn out much too fast.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 Changes are in store and that worries you, Sagittarius. Learn to embrace a little variety in life and you'll be a well-rounded person. A financial windfall is on the horizon.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 This is a good time to concentrate on your finances, Taurus. Re-examine your budget or make a plan for the new year. Bills pile up later in the week and will need addressing.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Focus on friends the next few days, Capricorn. You never know when you may need to ask a favor from them. A scheduling conflict arises on Wednesday.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Put on a happy face even if you aren't in the mood, Gemini. It'll make getting through the week a little easier. You are a master at hiding your true emotions.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 There's not much you can do to change a present situation, Aquarius, and that is frustrating. Channel your energy into something you can tackle to take your mind off the other.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 What are you trying to prove, Cancer? Taking on too much isn't going to win you points with the higherups. It'll quickly tire you out and then your performance will suffer.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 With Pisces birthdays on the horizon, start thinking about how you would like to spend your special day. Let loose. Sponsored by

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Making new friends comes easily to you, Leo. You have a magnetism, which will certainly come through this week. Others are ready to do your bidding.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 You need a vacation, Scorpio, so simply take one. Don't be concerned about the consequences; your mental health is more important at this point.

Patrick Kolafa l inSide Drumheller A committee of downtown Drumheller Merchants announced this week they have collected more than 1,400 responses to their survey to residents of the Town of Drumheller, and the response has almost been unanimous. “The first tallies of our parking survey indicate the public wants parking to remain as is. In fact, 99.66 per cent of them agree with the merchants. Over 96 per cent rate this issue as very important,” states a letter from members of the Drumheller merchants. The merchant group, the Mayor and members of council met on Wednesday morning. Dalton Madsen of Café Italiano attended the meeting. He said most merchants along 3rd Avenue came out. “It went really well,” said Madsen. “We outlined our concerns, and the Mayor gave his opinion.” While he said they didn’t discuss all of the issues, Madsen was appreciative of the meeting facilitated by the Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce. In his opinion, he says it appears the two sides are still at a stale mate. In a letter from the downtown merchants, they outlined their position stating what they want is the best option for storefront parking, and do not want changes to the current format. They say the increased traffic flow this summer was not a concern. “We lived through the first year, had an increase of 15 per cent and had no other problems than any other year,” it reads. Mayor Bryce Nimmo states in a press release regarding the town’s corporate priorities; “The Downtown Traffic Study is much more than a parking issue. The traffic study addresses safety and traffic flow. The traffic study is an integral tool for the vision of Drumheller and ensures that it meets the long-term objectives for development plans. The traffic study will be a component of the Tourism Master Plan, which will promote Drumheller as a premier tourist destination. The long term goal is to increase consumer traffic in the downtown core and improve pedestrian and cycling options as part of a more sustainable road network.”

Health Training Initiative moves to business planning phase Pascale Taylor | Inside Drumheller

Following the Community Futures public forum meeting in November 2009 in Drumheller, Jordan Webber stated that the feedback has been very supportive so far and the overwhelming support they received from the community has enabled them to progress the Drumheller Health Training Initiative to the next step, business planning. Their vision is to bring post-secondary education to Drumheller initially offering a two year certificate program in the healthcare field, with a view to possibly extend this to encompass other education programs. They are also hoping to develop the old Drumheller hospital as a base for the program. In January, Dr. Jon Ohlhauser, former President of the Prairie Bible Institute, an

educational centre located in Three Hills, became available to work with the project as a key educational advisor. “This is a very regional project so we would want to give opportunities for regional municipalities to have a part of some of the matching funds." Jordan Webber

Dr. Ohlhauser has worked for a number of post secondary education institutions and brings his expertise in the education delivery area. “His knowledge and experience are invaluable,” explains Jordan. “He has a history of moving those [other institutions] forward.” Dr. Ohlhauser is so far volunteering his time for the program but his role is anticipated to increase in the future

confirmed Webber. In mid December, Community Futures submitted an application for a Rural Community Adaptation grant, in the amount of $400,000, 10 per cent of which will need to be cost-shared by the project stakeholders. Webber confirmed the majority of the cost sharing is already designated and added, “This is a very regional project so we would want to give opportunities for regional municipalities to have a part of some of the matching funds. For instance, we have a number of municipalities around us, more or less in Delia that we have been working with very closely, and we would offer that to stakeholder groups such as community organizations.” Webber is hoping to get a decision on the grant during February.

Community Futures launched a new Drumheller Health Training Initiative website in January. From the site, www.cfbigcountry.ca/health, you will be able to register to subscribe to their newsletter and keep informed of any new development.

In the meantime, Community Futures will be starting the business planning phase at the end of January and are hoping to hold another public forum soon after.

haven’t always executed the way they want to, but I’ll tell you one thing, there’s is no quit in any of these players.” The Dragons began January on a high note, stringing four straight wins together. How-

ever, since January 10, they have not been able to record anything in the win column. Despite how the scores look, Price says the team has been playing well, and the focus remains the same. “The defense has been tight, but it seems the few times we have broken down, the other teams have capitalized. So we have to, make it a focus so we can get the puck on our stick,” he said. “Special teams are critical, our powerplay and penalty kill are going to have to be strong, and these games will have a playoff atmosphere I am sure. Then we just have to capitalize on our chances. There have been all sorts of times in games where we played well early, and had good chances but they haven’t gone in. It has allowed our opponents to stick around and convert on their chances. We want to have a first strike mentality over the next 10 games.” The Dragons have been given a tough schedule for the critical January game, playing the last four on the road. “It is just one of those scheduling quirks. We had a really long stretch of home games to begin the year and then a really long stretch of road games lately. It is more balanced for the next three weeks, and they are definitely all important games.” “It's a good challenge definitely, but it is doable,” said Price. The Dragons were in Camrose on Thursday, February 4, results were not available as of press time. On Friday, February 5, they are back home to face the Calgary Canucks.

Tough task ahead for Dragons Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

Despite what appears to be insurmountable odds, the Drumheller Dragons are committed to finishing the season

on a strong note. The Dragons are trailing their closest competitor, and a playoff berth by 12 points as of Thursday afternoon with 10 games left on the schedule.

Despite this, coach Dan Price says there is no quit in his dressing room. “Not on our team,” said coach Price. “We look these guys in the eyes everyday at practice and games. They

Make your valentine laugh at East Coulee playground comedy night Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

For years, they have said laughter is the best medicine, but have you heard it is the best aphrodisiac? Advice columnists and the blogosphere can’t all be wrong, and a sense of humour always ranks high on the list of traits that attract a mate. With this in mind, it is fit-

ting that the committee to build a playground in East Coulee are planning an event to make you laugh leading up to Valentine’s Day. On Saturday, February 13, they are bringing in Yuk Yuk's International Stand-up Comedy Night to the East Coulee Community Centre. The night includes a roast beef dinner and tons of laughs.

near the community centre. It is to be of the same scope as the playground recently built in the Huntington Hills area. The committee also wants to install a hard surface on the outdoor rink so it usable in the summer for floor hockey or basketball. “We have equipment right now in East Coulee, but it is not to code,” said Gerlinger, adding she often takes her children right into central Drumheller to play on playgrounds. The playground is needed in East Coulee as the face of the community has changed, and there are many young families in the area that could use park facilities. The committee hopes the comedy night will help them along their way to raising $25,000 for the playground. The Town of Drumheller will match the donation with an in-kind donation of labour and equipment to install the apparatus. They can then apply for a matching grant from

“It’s going to be great. We have three comedians plus supper,” said Jamie Gerlinger, president of the East Coulee playground committee. “We also have a drive home service now…from East Coulee to Nacmine. It is going to be a really fun event.” The campaign for a playground plods ahead. They plan to build the playground

the Alberta government, but time is of the essence. “That grant expires. You have to have your playground installed by March of 2011. So that means we have to have the playground in by this fall,” said Gerlinger. The committee is more than half way to achieving their goal. Some of their fundraising endeavors include bottle drives, collecting Drumheller Co-op till tapes, pancake breakfasts, selling 50/50 tickets, bake sales and corporate donations. The also have a number of raffle prizes. They will be selling raffle tickets at the comedy night as well as at pancake breakfasts on the last Sundays of February and March.
