OPINION Cuts for Cancer finale has Morse going under the razor Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

After 10 years, Cuts for Cancer will be going out with a bang, and a little more baldness. It is with a heavy heart that Cathy Morse of the Chop Shop is announcing that this year will be the final Cuts for Cancer she will be hosting at her shop. To thank all of those who made it successful, she too will be going under the razor to help those in need. For the last 9 years, she has been able to avoid having her locks shaved, because of all the volunteers who have stepped up to donate their hair to raise funds for the Drumheller Area Health Foundation. “The reason I am putting mine up is to thank all those who have stepped up over the years and supported the whole cause, it makes me pretty emotional still,” she said. For the last nine years Morse has staged the event. It was originally in memory of her mother who passed away from cancer, but as it grew, it was dedicated to many more in the community who were

battling, or had battled cancer. On top of that, many throughout the years have donated their hair to have wigs made for those who lost their hair because of treatments. Funds from Cuts for Cancer have gone into numerous projects at the Drumheller Health Centre to enhance the lives of those who are battling cancer as well as their families. The support not only comes from Drumheller, but surrounding communities. “It is unbelievable how it banded together all kinds of people who felt the same way,” she said. “When you see people hurting, you take things into your own hands to support your local community and hospital.” Over its history, the event has raised in the area of $160,000, and has continued to grow each year. She hopes they can top $200,000 on this final outing and is looking for more volunteers to get in the barber chair for a good cause. After years of talking people into the hot seat, Morse, now facing the prospect of her losing her own hair is undaunted.

Ayrianna Jacques is armed and ready to begin cutting Cathy Morse’s hair in the final Cuts for Cancer this coming February

“I’ve asked people not to laugh at me after they see me February 3,” she chuckles. “The ladies who have gone under the razor, have all come out looking beautiful, you see their faces, not just their hair. I think it will be a liberating experience.” Cuts for Cancer will be held on February

3. This is the tenth annual event and in its short history has raised $160,000. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

3. Pledge sheets are available at the Chop Shop. Those wanting to participate don’t have to shave their heads, the need only show up for a hair cut at the Chop Shop on that day. “I am a little sad that this is the end for me but maybe someone can pick it up and continue on,” said Morse.

So far, Sterling Martin, Jamie Worman, Joe Eccelston, Jeanette Giesbrecht and Patti Naegeli have entered. For every filled pledge sheet, participants will be entered for a chance to win two vacations in Las Vegas courtesy the Roadhouse Saloon.

???DID YOU KNOW???

Did you know that it is against a town bylaw to shovel snow onto town streets from your sidewalk, driveway or property? Everyone knows there is a lot of snow this winter and many of us may be running out of places to put all the snow. Please be considerate and do not push it onto the streets or neighboring properties as it creates obstacles for your neighbors and further issues for vehicles on town streets.

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW??? Members of the bylaw office are concerned about stray or lost cats out in the cold weather. If you have an unfamiliar cat perhaps hanging around your home or area kindly call the bylaw office so members can try and catch it and hopefully return it to its owner. If it is indeed lost and if an owner cannot be found at least then the cat will not be out in the cold weather and efforts can be taken to try and find it a new home. Animals need more food in the cold weather and it is doubtful that a stray or lost cat is getting an adequate amount of food. If anyone would like further information or discuss any of the topics above please call Greg Peters of bylaw at town hall 823-1363. Thanks.

Drumheller Aquaplex will be closed for shutdown beginning Nov. 4, 2013. The expected re opening date is Jan. 18, 2014. Online:www.dinosaurvalley.com/ For additional information please call the Drumheller Aquaplex – 403-823-1322 or 403-823-1321

Call the Aquaplex at 403.823.1322 or the Badlands Community Facility at 403.823.1370 for more information. The Town of Drumheller is proud to serve our members.

President of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #22 (Drumheller), Rector’s Warden at St. Magloire’s Anglican Church (basically the liaison between the rector and the congregation), and Treasurer of the Morning T.O.P. S. group. Did you have to be in the service to be President of the Legion? No, my father and my husband were both in the military - I’m an Associate Member. Play on the computer and crochet (a lot of afghans and doilies.) How long have you lived in the valley? Six Years.

What do you enjoy the most about living here? That you don’t have to leave the valley for any services - you can get anything you need here. When you get to be my age and don’t like driving out on the highways, that’s a big bonus. Where are you from originally? Brunkild, Manitoba. Population 100 - we had to even leave town to buy groceries. A very friendly town. How many times have you moved? 17 times in 41 years - all job related. Where do you wish you could still live? St. Jean, Manitoba, because that’s where my youngest grandchild is. How many granchildren do you have? Three boys, all in Manitoba. Where would you like to travel next? Tourism get boost from province

Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller The Alberta Government has unveiled a new framework to foster the growth of the Alberta Tourism industry. According to a release, the new Tourism Framework was developed through discussion with people in the industry and is designed to create jobs throughout the province, diversify the economy through investment, and to show off Alberta to the world. The plan is to grow tourism from a $7.8 billion to a $10.3 billion industry by 2020. “Alberta’s tourism industry is complex with many organizations involved. Having a common plan will help us to align our efforts, maximize resources, make a stronger impact in the marketplace, diversify our economy and build Alberta,” said Richard Starke, Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation. Chris Curtis of Travel Drumheller is excited for the new framework. “I think it is an ambitious framework and what I like about it is that it is moving in the direction where they want to have authentic, exciting experiences for visitors,” said Curtis. “What that is going to mean is product development is going to play a bigger role.” Simply put, he says, “If we want people to stay longer, we need to have more things for them to do.” “When we are talking about shoulder season or to make this a five day destination instead of two day destination, we need things like zip lines, activities on the river, trail rides…the real job for that is not us, the real job is for the private sector.” He said the role is not simply attracting tourism, but bring in people who want to attract tourists. “We want to attract companies that want to set things up so it will bring in tourism,” said Curtis. Ashley Warnock of Tourism, Parks and Recreation said what has been happening in South Central Alberta is a model that the province wants to use. “Canadian Badlands is an example of what the framework is all about, a regional collaborative model,” said Warnock. “They are definitely an example of what we want to see more of in the province. She said the vision of the framework is for industry to identify the needs and opportunities in each area and work together to develop these ideas.” “Between the tourism department and Travel Alberta, we would work with them to help them market and develop these opportunities appropriately, but it is really up to the industry to decide what they want to develop, what they want to establish and how they want to promote it,” said Warnock. Leanna Mohan, formerly of the Royal Tyrrell Museum, says the framework signals more investment in the industry, which is positive. “The plus is the minister is talking about developing an underdeveloped product,” said Mohan. MLA for Drumheller-Stettler and Tourism Critic Rick Strankman said he is having the opposition’s research department look at the framework.

Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Council strike task force to look at East Coulee fill station O.R. Sheddy | inSide Drumheller

The Town of Drumheller is setting up a special task force to review the location for the East Coulee Water ďŹ ll station. At a special council meeting on Monday January 6, Council voted to strike a task force to look into the issue. Last year the Town began work on the waterline project from Cambria to East Cou-

lee. About 90 per cent funding for the project came from the provincial Water For Life program. The line allows residential and commercial hook ups along the Highway 10 corridor, and also supplies water for ďŹ re and bulk sales. Early in the process, residents of East Coulee vocally opposed a distribution system for the community in East Drumheller, so the town decided not to go

ahead with this part of the project. This summer, work began on the line and the bulk ďŹ lling station near the entrance to the community, across from the East Coulee Hotel. The Town had previously purchased the land. Some residents have spoken against the selection of the site. This prompted the Town to strike the task force. The stated purpose of the task force is to iden-

tify issues from residents of the community resulting from the location of the ďŹ ll station. This will be completed through meetings and interviews with resident. The report will be presented to council at a public meeting. Councillors Lisa Zacharuk Hansen and Sharel Sho will be heading up the task force.

Minor hockey going strong into new year Michele Scott

| inSide Drumheller

Drumheller’s Minor Hockey teams are working hard with playos just around the corner. Coach Kit Clark of the McDonald’s Novice Raptors says the team has shown a lot of progress on the mental part of the game. He is proud they are playing a complete game (mental eort and physical effort) on a more regular basis. The McDonald’s Novice Raptors have a home tournament on January 18 and 19. Coach Lyle Cawiezel says the Yavis Atom Raptor’s hard work is paying o, as the team continues to move up in the standings. The

team currently stands at 4w-2l-1t. Coach Cawiezel says he’s proud of his players because of their hard eort. He says early in games, the team has found themselves down and have never given up, battling back on numerous occasions. Cawiezel says it’s a great group to work with, and over the last seven games the team has played really hard, and it’s starting to show. He says they’ve focused on having a positive environment for the kids, focusing on sportsmanship, skill development, and working together as a team. The Yavis Atom Raptors have a tournament in Rockyford on January 18 and 19, and a tournament in Red-

clie on January 25 and 26. The Boston Pizza/ Western Chev Bantam Raptors have won four of their last ďŹ ve games. Coach Coleman Hodgson says he’s proud of the way his team has improved and have come together as a team. He says the focus for the team this year has been on teaching the players team play and team systems. Hodgson says his team will be in Camrose this weekend at a tournament, with regular league games until the middle of February, then the playos start. The Boston Pizza/ Western Chev Bantam Raptors are hosting the Bantam D Provincials March 13-15, 2014.
