Hope College accepting applications Hope College approved to offer post-secondary programs Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Home–grown post secondary education in the Drumheller area is quickly becoming a reality, now that Hope College has been approved by the Alberta Government to offer two programs come this September. The college announced on Thursday, January 10, it has the approval to offer two diploma programs in business administration and tourism. They are already accepting applications. “We are thrilled to announce the approval of these programs for Hope College. It has been a long journey and we are very thankful for the patient support of the people who live in

this region. The first two programs will help lay a solid foundation for the development of future programs, particularly as we look to add specializations in rural and preventative healthcare,” said Dr. Jon Ohlhauser, president, Hope College. He explains the courses are “made in Drumheller” and unique to the needs of the area. “We have developed this in house, and it is being taught by local instructors, so this is our program,” said Ohlhauser. “In the business administration, you will receive marketing courses, accounting courses, business law courses. There are 20 courses and 30 credits, and we are looking at making them transferable to the University of Calgary or the University of Lethbridge for a full degree,” said Ohlhauser. “Out of the 25 courses, 15 are shared. There are

five unique courses related to tourism and rural tourism. That is what differentiates the two programs,” he said. He adds, Hope College has also submitted a proposal for a Justice Studies diploma program and is waiting for its approval. “It is for people who are interested in an entry level education to get into positions at the Penitentiary or in law enforcement,” said Ohlhauser. If approved, it will also commence in September 2013. These courses come on the heels of the Hope Health Initiative’s first major step in hiring a naturopathic practitioner to begin at the Hope Health Clinic. While the initial vision for the Hope Health Initiative was for the college to provide a health-based post secondary education, it is still its end goal. This does pose some challenges. “So many of the programs in health carry a professional designation at the end, you get a license to work in the system. They are requesting us to do that in partnership at the beginning, and the systems aren’t in place to make that easy,” he said

to establish mutually beneficial relationships with existing programs at other Alberta Colleges/Universities but the structures that currently exist with the Provincial Government makes that a unique challenge. These first 2 – and hopefully 3 – non-health programs help us get going on a solid foundation but the new programs we will be bringing on will have a definite healthcare orientation,” he said.

Drumheller’s generosity “overwhelming during Christmas season Michael James | inSide Drumheller

It is said that the Christmas season brings out the best in all of us. That was made quite evident in regards to Drumheller this past Christmas. The generosity of the community was described as “overwhelmingâ€? by the Drumheller Salvation Army. In total, $99,964 was raised from the kettles and donations, 18 skids of food collected from the annual food drive, just over $10,000 worth of toys handed out to children in need in Drumheller, and 95 hampers with a total value of just under $15,000 given to local families. “It was a success. We are so thankful to the community, individuals, and volunteers. We’re always overwhelmed by God providing,â€? said Lieutenant Rachel Sheils with the Drumheller Salvation Army. The ďŹ gures were up considerably from last year. In 2011, the Christmas Campaign raised roughly $81,000. The kettles alone raised $41,043 this year, which is on par with the $41,010 raised in 2011. However, there were times when it looked like the kettles may not provide as much. “They were right on track, for which we are very thankful. They were looking good for a bit, then they weren’t, then they were, but it came in right around last year,â€? said Sheils. Aside from the donations raised, Sheils was deeply moved by the generosity of the community when it came to volunteering. “There were a number of times where a volunteer would cancel or not show up to a kettle. Before I would even get into the oďŹƒce, someone would have called to volunteer,â€? said Sheils. “There was one time I went to visit a kettle and there was no one there. I stood there trying to ďŹ nd a volunteer on my cell phone, but couldn’t get anyone. Then, God sent a volunteer through the door. She had volunteered before, but I thought she came for another reason, so I wasn’t going to ask her. Then she oered to volunteer. I thank Him for putting it in people’s hearts to be generous.â€?

The donations saw the Salvation Army through the Christmas season and will help in the coming months. “We’re about to do budgets for the upcoming year. It takes a lot for the food and one sta that runs the food bank,â€? said Sheils. The food bank does not just run during Christmas. Food is needed year round and donations to the Drumheller Salvation Army are always welcome.

PUBLIC UTILITY INFORMATION

On December 17th, Council passed first reading for Bylaw 17-12 regarding the utility rates. The Bylaw provides for a 3% increase to the base rates as well as the consumption rate for the water utility only. In addition to this increase, there will be a $1 levy as an Infrastructure Investment Surcharge, and is directly added to the Capital Reserves. There is no increase in the WasteWater utility rates for 2013. A combined water and wastewater utility bill using a consumption of 19 cubic meters would cost $77.96 in December and $80.04 in January, an increase of $2.08 or 2.66%. Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all survived it, and are looking toward something better than what was presented in 2012. We left 2011 with high hopes, hoping to leave behind us all that was bad about that particular year. Like a flower, optimism springs eternal, only to be choked out by the weeds that are the realities of everyday life. That is the problem with optimism, it lives in the human spirit, and so is very fragile. It cannot compete with the tangibles of real life. We make New Year’s resolutions, and we make them in earnest, with every intention of being better than we were. Problem is, we always make the easy ones: stop smoking, lose a few pounds, not as many drinks before supper. They are easy to break, and so they get broken. What you want to do is, try making the harder resolutions, the ones that call for some actual resolve. These are the ones that do not involve the tangibles, but involve the mind, the spirit, the soul. Find what it is in this realm, do something to expand your mind, strengthen your spirit, and contact your soul. Making resolutions to any of these takes perseverance and determination, but they are made to your inner self, and to break them would be to live with a lie, and that is why you will keep them. Once you know that you can do this, the smoking, the few pounds, will be a cake walk. How about it? Feeling better about your chances in 2013?

You know those lists of the most annoying phrases that they come out with at the end of the year? It’s like the Top Ten lists that come out, Top Ten songs, Top Ten cars, Top Ten restaurants, Top Ten plays of the year, etc. Well, I’ve only got two phrases, (one is just a word, and it’s more how people misuse it), that really annoy me. Topping my list is “Oh my God”!, or for the computer/ text generation, “OMG”! It tires me, you hear it everywhere. If it tires me, how must God feel? This is something that people use in anger, awe, surprise, delight, or whenever “Wow” just isn’t enough. There’s also the variation of “My God”! These phrases are used by people who wouldn’t give God a second thought, unless hit with a devastating illness, or trapped on the side of a freezing mountain. Maybe by that time God has heard you senselessly invoke His name so often that He thinks, “Not this time, I read Aesop’s Fables”. “I know all about the boy who cried wolf ”. For 2013 try something new. Number Two on the list is the word “impact”. It isn’t the word so much as it is the manner in which people misuse it. People who don’t know better, or even those who do, use it in places it was never meant. Trying to sound important, and grammatically correct, the user comes off sounding self important, and like a grammar school dropout. Unfortunately, some are impressed when they hear, “How will this impact the Town”? Let’s look at some of the alternatives to “impact”, found in Webster’s Thesaurus: bang, bump, collision, contact, crash, effect, jolt, knock, thump. Now try it: “How will this bump the Town”? “How will this crash the Town”? “How will this knock the Town”? All sound pretty dumb, but no dumber than “How will this impact the Town”? Whatever happened to “affect”, “effect”? Try learning and using one new word a week in 2013, and see how it impacts you (sorry about that).

Family Literacy Day celebrated with concert Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Drumheller Family Literacy is inviting residents to recognize family literacy in a new way this year. On Saturday, January 26, 2 p.m., at the Elim Pentacostal gymnasium, Drumheller Family Literacy has invited entertainer Mary Lambert to give an interactive concert designed for the entire family. “Mary engages and amazes kids of all ages with her colourful props, dances, and wonderful voice,” said Louise Henrickson, coordinator for Drumheller Family Literacy. The concert is meant to recognize Family Literacy Day, which has been held on January 27 for the last 15 years across Canada. The goal of the special day is to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy related activities as a family. Drumheller Family Literacy was established locally in 2006 to assist families with the essential skills that are necessary for a successful start to formal education. “By using a team approach, parents get access to individual support. This support can become a vital asset, especially if you are unsure of the skills necessary to begin school. Reading, writing, financial, digital literacy, oral communication, thinking and working with others are all essential skills Canadians require to live a fully engaged life. All of these skills start at an early age in the home and we want you to celebrate your family’s success,” said Henrickson. Although literacy is taken for granted, there are some unsettling statistics. Fifteen per cent of adult Canadians have reading and writing skills too limited to deal with material encountered in everyday life. To take part in the concert, those interested are asked to register by calling 403-823-1660 by January 21.

The Dragons netted their ďŹ rst win of 2013 and it couldn’t have been any closer. On Wednesday night, the Okotoks Oilers, the Dragons closest rivals in the standings, came to the Dragons den. The game had the potential to bring the Dragons within striking distance of overtaking the Oilers in the standings. In a come-from-behind victory, settled only by the last shooter in a shootout, the Dragons came up with a 3-2 victory. The Dragons took the upper hand on the scoreboard 11:33 into the ďŹ rst period. Colton Vanucci, ďŹ ghting for the puck behind the Oilers net, managed to get it out front to a waiting Christopher Rauckman, who stued it in for the Dragons ďŹ rst goal of the night. The hard earned lead only lasted just over a minute. The Oilers, with some tic-tac-toe, snuck a shot through the ďŹ ve-hole of the Dragons newest goalie, Etienne Roy. The Oilers followed up with their second goal with just a minute left in the ďŹ rst period. Both teams battled back and forth in a scoreless second period. It wasn’t until 10 minutes into the third when the Dragons, ďŹ ghting to tie the game, did so on a solo eort by Cavin Leth.

Neither team could get the upper hand before the end of the third and the game was forced into overtime. In the end, it was yet another shootout that decided the victor. The Dragons previous two shootout attempts, which were against the Fort McMurray Oil Barons on December 21 and January 2, ended in losses for the Dragons. However this one proved to be in the Dragons favour. The Oilers were up ďŹ rst and could not break through Roy. Their following two attempts ended up scoreless. The Dragons sent out Rauckman and then Brad Deagle, who both came up empty handed. Dakota Zaharichuk, the ďŹ nal shooter, stued the puck past Oilers goalie Jared D’Amico for the Dragons third goal and the win. The win gives the Dragons 44 points on the season, only three behind the Oilers, who still earned a point from the loss. The Dragons will be looking to build on the momentum this Saturday in Olds against the Grizzlys and on Monday on the road against the Calgary Mustangs. The Dragons next home game is next Wednesday against the Mustangs.
