Greentree School has torch fever Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Students at Greentree School are getting into the Olympic spirit by staging their own Torch Relay this Friday. The Greentree School relay begins in Willow Estates in East Drumheller and will proceed along Riverside Drive to the Rotary Splash Park under the World’s Largest Dinosaur. “Greentree School has torch fever,” says teacher Cindy Gerodo. She says the whole school will be involved with the run, and because the Olympic Torch Run is one of the longest in history as it winds across the country, each class has been researching a province and will represent it on the route. They are planning to have the Mayor on hand and the Drumheller Dragons will be joining the

Rosebud Chorale, Rosebud Master Works Choir, Westwinds Choral Ensemble and the Wildrose Chamber Choir all performed at the Memories of Christmas Concert last January at Knox United Church. The same voices will join in unison under

classes on the route. Martin McSween, who has been selected to light the Olympic Cauldron in Drumheller at the Torch Celebrations this Saturday, will also be taking part in the Greentree School relay. Gerodo says they received a grant from the federal government for their activity, and have also found great support for the relay from local businesses and individuals. She says Midfield Supply is building a cauldron to light at the termination of the relay. They will celebrate the torch run with a quintessentially Canadian barbecue serving up bison burgers from Riverside Packers. Encana is supplying the barbecue and personnel from TriCan will be cooking up the burgers. The Town of Drumheller has also been supportive in closing down the roadways to make it a safe journey.

Ladies and gentlemen, start swimming Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

Anything you can do I can do better… When it comes to swimming lengths at the Drumheller Aquaplex, it seems the ladies have the upper hand. The Battle of the Sexes is set for the coming next two weeks at the Drumheller Aquaplex. The contest is simple, register and keep track of the lengths you swim. Every little bit counts. At the end of the contest, a winner is declared, and so are bragging rights for another year. The top swimmers also receive a prize. The competition has been going for more than 30 years, and much to the chagrin of the male ego, the women have topped the men for at least the last 10 years. Last year the men made a valiant effort at regaining the title, but were outpaced by the women, 4,343 lengths to the men’s 4,242, keeping an estimated lead of about 2 kilometres. The contest begins January 18 and runs until January 31, and it's the perfect chance to make good on that nagging New Year’s resolution.

December Photo Contest Winner If you drove out of Drumheller before Christmas on Highway 56 east, you couldn’t have failed to notice the lit up John Deere combine outside the Deer Valley Implements Dealership. Pieter Van Otterloo, shop foreman at John Deere, successfully managed to capture the scene perfectly, the moon even making an appearance during the shot was our December winner. In the photo, Doneal Kasie from inSide gives Pieter his prize, a portrait package from Freson IGA. Enter our monthly photo contest on page 11. Mailphoto by Pascale Taylor

Fifth annual Knee Hockey Tournament set for Non-Smoking Week Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller There is no better time than the present to kick the habit of smoking, especially when it is National Non-Smoking Week. National Non-Smoking Week is January 17-23 and the theme is Quitting is contagious, pass it on! Addictions counselor in Drumheller, Martin McSween of Alberta Health Services Addiction & Mental Health, says the week is always marked by a highly successful awareness campaign focusing on youth. This is the fifth annual year for the Knee Hockey Tournament at Greentree School. The event includes the Drumheller Dragons, as well as Grade 6 students from Greentree School, Morrin School and St. Anthony’s School. The schools unite to play knee hockey and learn about the health risks of smoking.

Beyond Drumheller, McSween will be busy throughout the region as other schools hold events to mark the week. BLAST Teams (Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today) are organizing school events. National Non-Smoking Week was established in 1977 to educate Canadians about the dangers of smoking, to help prevent people from starting smoking as well as help people quit, and to assist the attainment of a smoke -free society. It has been a positive year according to McSween for battling smoking. He says the regulations to curb tobacco advertising and a rise in taxes on tobacco products have had their effect. "There has been a decline, due to these changes. ASH (Action on Smoking and Health) reported that,” said McSween. He adds, "There was legislation passed last fall to ban flavoured tobacco.” McSween says this is especially relevant because many flavoured tobacco products are packaged and marketed to youth. “The reason is they are sold as singles and they are really affordable for youth. As the taxes go up on the package, they become more affordable for youth and make it attractive,” said McSween. “Peanut butter and jam

was one of the flavours if you can believe it.” This year’s theme focuses on the effect one person has on those around him when they quit smoking. Studies have shown it was easier for people to quit smoking when others in their social circle also kicked the habit. People followed the quitting habits of their spouses, friends, brothers and sisters, and in small firms, behaviour of co-workers was also influential, says the National Non-Smoking week web-

site. The greatest influence was shown in very close relationships such as husbands and wives and siblings. The fifth annual Knee Hockey Tournament takes place on Wednesday, January 20 which

is also Weedless Wednesday, a point on the calendar for smokers to challenge their resolve for at least one day. The tournament is at Greentree School and runs from 9 a.m. to noon.

Local singers, dancers to greet Olympic Torch Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller While there has been some high profile entertainment announced for the Olympic Torch Relay Celebrations, Drumheller singers and dancers will also to take the stage and shine. 23 dancers from the Carol Todor Dance School and a selected choir from DCHS have been working on a routine to welcome the Olympic Torch when it comes through Drumheller on Saturday, January 16, 2010. “The dancers are doing great because they are so keen,” Todor said. The dancers are from ages 5-20 and will be dancing to I Believe as recorded by Yolanda Adams. The song will be performed live by a DCHS choir, led by Jillian Augey for the performance. Augey created a choir to per-

form at the Olympic ceremony. Combining the DCHS junior high choir, with senior high volunteers, has formed an energetic and talented group of singers. Courtney Morse (known as Sally Bowles from Cabaret) will be soloing. The performance even includes choreography and coordinated outfits. The performance will incorporate the red mittens that have become a symbol of the Vancouver 2010 games. Bits n' Pieces in Drumheller has donated the fabric, and made tuques for the troupe, and EnCana has supported the dancers to help purchase hoodies for the performance. The group will also be performing at the Paint the Town Red celebration in downtown Drumheller on Friday, January 15. The festivities begin at 5 p.m.

Name: Layne Syvertsen Employer: Royal Tyrrell Museum Job Title: G.E.O. (Gallery Experience Officer) What do you like most about your job? Getting to spend so much time in the museum galleries, and meeting so many interesting people. How long have you lived in Drumheller? Since last June, but I lived in Carbon for 2 years before that. Where are you from? Born in Medicine Hat, grew up in Calgary. What do you do in your spare time? Play music, write songs, go hiking or mountain biking. Who or what inspires you (and how)? When I was just starting out on guitar, I had a dream where I got to visit heaven and see this awesome band of all the great musicians that have died. After the show, Jimi Hendrix came over and sat down with me. He told me “never give up on your dreams.” That has

I was looking for something healthier to begin the New Year after all the decadence we experienced the past month or so. Of course vegetables were the first thing to come to mind. Looking for something not everyone has tried, I thought of a personal favorite, which is Hearts of Palm. You can find them in cans, usually near Lori Stefanishion the artichoke hearts. You can even find them in Dollarama these days! They come in pieces or whole sticks. I enjoy eating a stick plain as a delicious snack inSide Drumheller but also have some favorite recipes to appreciate them as well. Food Columnist An easy salad Usually, I like to do a plate of tomato wedges, fresh mushrooms, onion slices and chunks of hearts of palm. A drizzle of mayo mixed with a bit of milk is my favorite dressing for this salad. I like the tangy flavor of mayo and the hearts of palm together. But, vinaigrettes are also fine. I also toss them into my spinach salads and most often am asked about this delightfully different ingredient. Used in a quiche or breakfast frittata, hearts of palm are also very tasty. The flavor of Gruyere cheese is very nice with them. Here is a side dish, not quite as low-fat as a basic salad, but quite scrumptious regardless. Hearts of Palm au Gratin 2 cans whole Hearts of Palm, drained, rinsed and dried 4 large slices ham 1 garlic clove 75g. grated Gruyere cheese 500 ml. milk 2 eggs 4 Tbsp. flour 75g. butter Melt butter and slowly incorporate the flour, making a paste but not browning it. Pour in milk and whisk until thickened and beginning to bubble. Remove from heat and add salt and pepper, garlic and a dash of nutmeg if you desire. Cool to lukewarm. Add strips of ham and the whole eggs. Arrange the hearts of palm in an ovenproof dish. Pour the sauce over and sprinkle with cheese. Bake 350 for 30 minutes.

been a big inspiration for me ever since. Who would you like most to meet? I think it would be The Edge from U2. He was one of my very first inspirations to get into music. What would you like to achieve this year? The completion of my album Road to Maya. Any New Year’s resolution? Not this time around. What was your best Christmas present of all time? My first album, Let it Be by The Beatles. That was a huge inspiration for me to further my music. Favourite book/film/ song? Book: The Alchemist, Film: Gladiator, Song: Stairway to Heaven If money was no option, what would you be doing? Recording and promoting my music.

What’s on your playlist? What’s a playlist? I listen to CD’s, you lose something when you just listen to bits and pieces instead of the album as a whole. Right now it’s lots of Beatles, Zeppelin, and Neil Young. What legacy would you like to leave Drumheller? Again I would have to say my music, and the bands I’ve played in. If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Right here in Drumheller, this is where I’ve wanted to live all my life. Black or white? White, it’s actually all of the colours in one. With black you just get a lack of any colour at all. Words to live by? Don’t be afraid to take chances in life, the only pain is to feel nothing at all.

Message from Torch Celebration Co-chairs

In our lifetime there are memorable events that we never forget. The Olympic Flame carried by torch runners in Drumheller will be one of those. This day provides an excellent opportunity for family and friends to demonstrate national and local community pride. Canada has hosted the Winter Olympic Games a number of times. This year Vancouver will put its own special stamp on the Olympics. This Olympic’s Torch Run is the longest torch relay in the history of the Olympics. Drumheller and area are most fortunate to have been chosen to celebrate the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron in our community. Martin McSween from East Coulee, was seCo-Chairs John Sparling and lected to represent Drumheller as the last torch Mayor Bryce Nimmo runner who will have the privilege to light the Olympic Cauldron. Drumheller and District residents have embraced this project and over 25 percent of us have planned to participate in our Torch Run celebration. Many thanks to the major sponsors who will provide an entertaining program highlighting professional and local entertainers. It is our hope that everyone who attends this event will have a good time and many enjoyable memories. We extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the people who have unselfishly given of their time and skills to assist the Drumheller Olympic Torch Committee in working with the Vancouver Olympic Committee. Over a hundred volunteers from Drumheller and the surrounding communities have volunteered their help.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee has provided the route and times for the Torch Run as it passes through Drumheller. • 11:34 a.m. the Torch is scheduled to depart from near the intersection of North Dinosaur Trail and Bridge Street. • The Torch will travel south across the Gordon Taylor Bridge. • The procession will turn left on Riverside Drive and continue travel east to Centre Street. • The Torch will make its

way south on Centre Street to 3rd Avenue in downtown Drumheller. • The Relay continues west on 3rd Avenue to 2nd Street West. • The Torch will jog south along 2nd Street West to Highway 575 where it will head west on Highway 575 and will stop near Elgin Hill Road at approximately 11:48 a.m. • At 11:54 a.m. the Torch Relay will begin again on Highway 575 near the entrance to the Passion Play Site. It will enter the parking lot and join in the Olympic Torch Community Celebration where Martin McSween is scheduled to light the Community Cauldron at noon. • Following the Celebration the torch will exit the Canadian Badlands Passion Play site and travel east on 4th Avenue South West and end shortly after 1 p.m. All information was supplied to us by the Drumheller Olympic Torch Committee.

Making of a torch Designed to meet the challenge The swooping design of the nearly one-metre long torch is meant to reflect the lines of a skier’s turns carved in the snow and the undulating beauty of Canada’s winter landscape, Olympic officials said.

Winter 1998 Nagano

Summer 1988 Seoul

Summer 2000 Sydney

Winter 1992 Albertville

Winter 2002 Salt Lake City

The torch was engineered and designed by Olympic sponsor Bombardier to withstand the challenging conditions it will encounter along the 45,000-kilometre relay route through 1,000 communities, they said. It will travel from the mild climate of Vancouver Island to the bone-chilling Arctic cold of Canadian Forces Station Alert located less than 900 kilometres from the North Pole. Twelve-thousand torches will be manufactured, one for every torch bearer taking part in the relay, to withstand the range of conditions they are expected to face, including temperatures ranging from -50 C to 40 C and rain, snow and wind.

The torch makes its appearance in Drumheller on Saturday, January 16!! Don’t miss it!

a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

Last week Lorne Shapiro, a good friend and acquaintance of mine, my family and many other families in this valley, passed away. To me, Lorne always seemed larger than life, with an appetite for life that exceeded that of most men. He had a great capacity for enjoying life, both the good things and the simple. When Lorne came into a room, you knew it, he was a man with a certain presence you couldn’t miss. Sadly today, those of us who knew him and loved him will miss his presence.

Two Tory MLAs from Ed Stelmach’s government, have crossed the floor to sit with the Wildrose Alliance. Trouble is, nobody voted for them to represent that party, they were elected as Progressive Conservatives. This kind of thing really bothers me. The people in your constituency elect you to represent them in a particular party. If you feel you can no longer stay in that party, then you have several choices, you may quit politics, you may sit as an independent, or you may cross the floor and join another party. Before you do any of these however, I believe it is your responsibility to go to your constituents, apprise them of your situation, and seek either their advice and guidance, or their permission. Anything less and you have nullified their votes, their right to party representation, and that is wrong. As good as these two may be, the Wildrose Alliance perhaps should not be so quick to welcome them. Of course, that’s just my personal opinion.

How’s that New Year’s resolution working for you? You down to half a pack a day? How about that 10 pounds that found its way to your waist over the holidays? Still spending 40 bucks a week on coffee? Started limiting the alcohol intake to the weekend? How about it, still trying to navigate 3000 pounds of iron down Deerfoot at 60 mph while talking on the cell phone? If you are fighting with any of these, remember, they are called “resolutions”, the adjective form of which is resolute, which means, determined, unwavering. So, set your jaw, steel yourself, and don’t allow the fact that you are merely human keep you from reaching your goal. But also, remember that these are small things, distractions to keep us from the bigger things. As Marley said to Scrooge, by way of warning, “Mankind is (was) my business.” If the only resolution you made was to be a better person, then believe me, you have a full plate. However, the satisfaction you derive from your endeavour will dwarf any of those other silly resolutions. In fact, on your way to becoming that “better person,” you may find you no longer have time to indulge your vices. The world can use someone like you; someone with determination. 02s

Welcomes the Olympic Torch!!

Downtown Drumheller is ready to paint the town red in preparation for the Olympic Torch’s arrival. Downtown Merchant's Association have teamed up with The Drumheller and District Chamber of Commerce to begin celebrating the arrival of the torch on Friday night, and those who come down to take in the action will be seeing red. Tara Semchuk of Downtown Drumheller Merchant Association is excited for the incredible opportunity to be a part of the Olympics. She would say it is a once in a lifetime opportunity, but she was in Calgary during the 1988 Olympics and volunteered. “Until you experience it, you don’t really know how big it is,” she says. “It builds community.” Paint the Town Red on Friday night will be a block party. Centre Street, between Railway Avenue and 3rd Avenue, will be blocked for all the festivities. The events will kick off at 5 p.m. with the singing of O Canada. A group of Carol Todor’s dance students and a choir from DCHS led by Jillian Augey have been working hard on a routine for the Torch Celebrations, and on Friday they will be previewing their performance in downtown Drumheller. After that, the celebration continues in the most quintessentially Canadian way. The Drumheller Floor Hockey League will be holding its Welcome the Torch

Drumheller’s Melanie Mazereeuw will be carrying the Olympic Torch on Sunday, January 17 through Bow Island on the stretch just a day after the Drumheller Torch Relay Celebration. Mazereeuw’s consistent entries on the iCoke website got her foot in the door. It was her community spirit and involvement that put her over the top. She entered in the area of 40 times to win a spot on the Torch Relay Team. Shortly thereafter she received an email telling her she needed to write an essay. “The theme was living ac-

tive or community spirit,” she said. She wrote about some of her community involvement. She and a friend participate in the Enerflex Walk MS walk and raise a sizable contribution to the MS Society each year. She has set up a recycling program at the Drumheller Co-op store and offices where she works, and spearheads the Greentree Mall initiative Town of Toys each year, collecting donations for The Salvation Army Christmas Hamper program. “It’s the small stuff really, but it is community oriented,” she said.

Drumheller’s Chris Lacher will be carrying the Olympic Torch on Friday, January 15 through Camrose. Chris, son of Tony and Linda Lacher, applied to be a torch runner through the iCoke website and through the RBC website, but it was through the Sogo Active Campaign that he was selected. He joined up and began recording his daily activity, and setting weekly goals. If he met his goals he was entered in a draw. They picked a busy time for Lacher as it was during Minor Hockey playoffs, and Lacher plays for the midget Raptors. Beyond hockey, Lacher is a suitable candidate for his community service. He often volunteers with the local Lions Club and plays piano at St. Anthony’s Church. He

also spends time on Fridays at Sunshine Lodge volunteering with some of the senior members of the community. “I’m proud to be a part of it. It is one of the longest relays in Olympic history,” said Lacher.
