Carnival fun to celebrate Family Literacy Day Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

Each year, many children and adults in Canada celebrate Family Literacy Day on January 27, by participating in activities which will help families get involved in their children’s reading and learning development. To celebrate the occasion,

inSide STREETERS To encourage families to read and learn together, January 27 is Family Literacy Day, inSide Drumheller asks, What is your favourite book?

Tessa Bitz “I really like The Waterhole (by Graeme Base), because I find it really funny, I like the bit when the man says: ‘ok, which of the wise guys hid all the water?’”

Sarah Bitz “I like Nancy Drew books, I got 4 for Christmas. I like the way she goes and solves mysteries.”

Ethan Bitz “Scepters by L.E. Modesitt, I like the way he writes and they are good adventure stories.”

the Drumheller Family Fun Committee is holding a Family Literacy Carnival on Saturday, January 23 in the Audio Visual Room at the Civic Centre (above the library) from 2 p.m. and are inviting families to come and join them and the program partners, AHS-Community Addiction & Mental Health, the Town of Drumheller, Golden Prairie Parent Link, Drumheller Family Literacy, Drumheller Further Education and Drumheller Adult Literacy. Activities will include a ‘draw and tell’ story, contests and prizes. There will also be a magician and face painting. Families will be invited to move to different stations where they will have fun story writing as a group, making crafts, playing carnival games and much more. Refreshments will also be provided. The aim of Family Literacy Day is to encourage families to read and learn together and to be introduced to new ways of getting involved. The message is: “Literacy is more than books." Louise Henrickson, Family

A Family Literacy Carnival is taking place on January 23 from 2 p.m. in the AV room at the Civic Centre. It will offer fun for the whole family, with stories, crafts, balloon art and a magician.

Literacy coordinator explains, “It’s not just about reading stories, there are a lot of other activities that go into learning to read and write…bringing the awareness to parents how important their job is and that the time they spend with their child is really, really important. It is just as vital they spend that time with them sharing. It doesn’t necessarily mean sit down and read a

kids create the map for your next road trip so they can navigate by reading signs and billboards. Create a trip journal. To introduce children to new technologies, here are two further ideas: Surf the Internet together to find great websites that support your hobbies and interests. Write your own adventure: Write a short story as a family with alternative endings written by each family member. “You’ve Got Mail”: with adult supervision, have children go online and find a suitable electronic postcard to customize and send to a loved one. Doing such activities 15 minutes a day will help make your child better equipped to face the challenges ahead. In the process, it will also sharpen adult minds, so the whole family will benefit from these fun activities. You will need to pre-register to attend the event by contacting Karla at 403-823-1315 or email kroberts@dinosaurvalley.com.

Many ways in Drumheller to contribute to Haitian relief Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

It has been ten days since an earthquake caused the city of Port au Prince in Haiti to come crashing down. The death toll continues to rise as does the humanitarian disaster. One of the poorest countries in the western hemisphere is now faced with the heart wrenching task of burying their dead, picking up and rebuilding from the rubble left behind. The international community has responded to the disaster, and local residents can help make a difference through a number of avenues. The Salvation Army is often the first on the ground in such natural disasters, and the tragedy in Haiti is no exception. The Salvation Army began its work in Haiti in 1950 and are very much part of the community. They have three medical facilities as well as a network of social service institutions and schools. While much of the Church’s infrastructure was damaged, they continue to help wherever they can. A day after disaster struck, The Salvation Army in Canada sent an immediate $100,000

USD, and began a fundraising campaign to support the humanitarian response. Matt Sheils of The Salvation Army in Drumheller says their office will accept donations to help the relief effort. They can be contacted by calling 403823-2215. The Rotary Club in Drumheller is also making an effort for local people to participate in helping Haiti. The service club decided it would send a SHELTERBOX to the area. Jay Garbutt, international director of the local Rotary Club explains SHELTERBOX helps meet people’s basic needs. “A SHELTERBOX is designed to be a permanent aid for a group of up to 10 people to provide their most basic human needs of shelter, clean water and food,” said Garbutt. “When you look inside the box you will see a very sturdy tent designed for 10 people, sleeping bags and so on. It is a hefty list of equipment that fits into that box.” “It is meant to provide for people for up to six months.” According to SHELTERBOX.ca, the SHELTERBOX Canada project is administered and promoted by Rotarians from across Canada.

It is distributed through aid agencies and Rotary Clubs closest to the disaster areas. Most of the funding comes as donations from Rotary Clubs around the world, as well as other organizations and individuals who have given great support to the project. Each package contains about $1,200 worth of supplies. The local Rotary Club has dipped into the membership’s social fund to send a SHELTERBOX to Haiti in its time of utmost need. “With what is going on in Haiti, everyone is wondering what they can do. We wanted to act, and act quickly,” he said. “We are doing our best to chip in from here.” He says the Rotary Club is encouraging the community to get behind the project. “Sometimes when it comes to international aid, people are wary if their money is going to get to where it needs to get, and the answer in this case is absolutely. When you donate to SHLETERBOX, once they hit the $1,200 mark, off goes another box,” said Garbutt. He says locals wanting to donate to the SHELTERBOX program can go through any member of the Rotary Club or

by contacting Jay Garbutt at 403-823-3380. They can also go to www.SHELTERBOX.ca to make a donation. While churches and community groups are getting involved, so are youngsters. Fred Makowecki, who is involved in the Drumheller 1st Scouts, says the organization is rallying for the Haitian people. The troop, which includes Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, are having a bottle drive on Saturday, January 23 and have designated that half the funds go toward Haiti relief. The funds will be sent in, and matched by the federal government. They are also taking cash donations to go to the relief effort. There are a number of aid agencies on the ground in Haiti. Here is list of a few more agencies Canadians can donate to for the aid effort. • Red Cross- Donate online at www.redcross.ca, by phone at 1-800-418-1111. • The Humanitarian Coalition- Donate online at www. thehumanitariancoalition.ca, by phone at 1-800-464-9154. • Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace- Donate online at www. devp.org, by phone at 1-888664-3378.

To develop those skills, ABC Canada Literacy Foundation and Honda Canada, who introduced the Family Literacy Day in 1999, are suggesting examples of activities: The Count: have your child count out the change required to make a purchase. Reinforce the importance of math in everyday life. Family Game Night: set up a family board game night where a different game is played each week. Have each member of the family involved in reading instructions and game cards and keeping score. Map out your trip: have your

Hoop Dynos take on Harlem Crowns “It was a good laugh, the pressure was off and it was nice to just have fun.”

Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

They promised an entertaining basketball game and we weren’t disappointed! On Thursday, January 16, the Dynos, Drumheller Composite High School senior basketball players, were brave enough to play against world renowned basketball players, The Harlem Crowns. All Dyno players got to try out their skills against the 5 strong Crowns team. As well as showing off those skills, the Dynos got to dem-

Mitch Smith

onstrate their sense of humour and joined in the “clownball” show, Mitch Smith, Dyno player, told inSide Drumheller, “It was a good laugh, the pressure was off and it was nice to just have fun!” They played to a packed au-

dience from all ages and the show proved to be a very successful fundraiser as it was a sell out, with proceeds going towards the team’s expenses. Judging by the constant laughter and clapping, the show was extremely well received by the audience, random members of which were, sometimes reluctantly, chosen as clown participants. All joined in the game though and the referees had a lot on their plate trying to keep The Harlem Crowns under control….and failing miserably, to the great enjoyment of all!

Two Harlem Crowns players pick on referee Ryan Hatch, providing much entertainment not only for the audience, but also for the Dynos. inSide photo Pascale Taylor

inSideEMPLOYMENT Students’ encounter with stranger renews safety awareness

New triage area for Drumheller Health Centre

Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

Parents are asked to review safety practices with their children after an incident involving two DCHS students raised some concern. Two female students were returning to school on Monday, January 18 at noon when they were approached by a man asking them for their assistance to try and get his truck unlocked. The students declined, however the man asked them again for assistance and began to walk towards the youngsters. The students fled the scene and returned to school. No one was harmed in the incident. This week, students at DCHS, Greentree School and St. Anthony’s School took home letters from administration to inform parents about the event. The letter says police have been informed about the incident and statements have been taken. Anne Morgan, principal at Greentree School says teachers have reviewed with students basic safety practices when dealing with strangers. The letter serves as a reminder to parents to review basic safety concepts including: • Not to walk alone. • Do not talk to strangers. • Stick to known routes and avoid alleyways. • Under no circumstances, get into a vehicle, or try to assist others. • If you feel threatened, run to a house for safety, or call out loudly or scream. • If there is an incident, report it to the school administration and your parents. Staff Sergeant Art Hopkins told inSide Drumheller these sort of incidents are uncommon. “It is very rare. It is not a common occurrence to say the least. Most parents have done a good job in streetproofing their kids, but this brings renewal to the urgency,” he said. “It’s like a fire drill. The more you practice, the more you bring it to the surface, the quicker people will react to it and realize this isn’t right, this is what I should do.”

The emergency department at the Drumheller Health Centre is undergoing renovations to bring the facilities up to the CTAS standard and will include a new triage room. inSide photo Pat Kolafa

Pasacle Taylor| Inside Drumheller

Renovations at the Drumheller Health Centre’s emergency department are currently underway to bring the facilities up to the Canadian Emergency Department Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) standard with the creation of a triage room. This will provide an area for patients’ needs to be assessed by a registered nurse and for their treatment to be prioritized based on the severity of their condition. The CTAS standard was developed by the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians. Its objectives are to “more accurately define patients’ needs for timely care and to allow emergency departments to evaluate their acuity level, resource needs and performance

against certain operating objectives". As this triage standard did not exist for rural communities when the hospital was built in 2005, the Drumheller Health Centre carried out triage at a desk inside the emergency department. To get in line with the CTAS standard, work was started a few months ago and was put on hold during the H1N1 pandemic to be resumed in December. Bev Krabsen, site manager at the Drumheller Health Centre, explained to inSide Drumheller that the admitting area will be moved to the new section and will include a glass room for triage to give more visibility. The current admitting area will become an extension of the waiting room area and thus will increase its capacity.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

NGC in Drumheller

Due to tight infection control, Krabsen explained renovation work in the department has been barricaded off and staff has worked hard to keep the flow going as smooth as possible. Since the new facilities were built, the number of patients seen in the emergency department has increased dramatically. Fortunately, the Drumheller Associated Physicians drop-in

clinic has helped relieve some of the pressure on the emergency department. The clinic, located on Riverside Drive, runs every week day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., should be the first place of call for patients who would normally see their own doctor but are unable to get an immediate appointment. Once the triage renovations are completed, the next project at the Health Centre is to expand the waiting room area.

downtown Drumheller, and east on Highway 10. A police cruiser attempting to pursue the truck lost control at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 10 and careened into a pole. The officer was not injured. The chase concluded near the community of Lehigh when the pursuing officer observed a cloud of black smoke coming from the white truck, and the engine failed. Two occupants were discovered in the truck, which was stolen from Red Deer the same morning. There were also a number of stolen items in the truck as well as break-in instruments. Charges against the second person in the vehicle were dropped. Kerrison was ordered into a 23 month conditional sentence order. The first eight months of the sentence he is to be under house arrest, and for the remainder of the sentence he is to abide by a curfew. He was also ordered to pay more than $23,000 in restitution, and faces a provincial driving suspension.

Chips with Salsa a little spicy but always welcome

Nut free zones on airplanes. Air Canada wants to institute “nut free” areas on all its commercial flights. When I read that in the Calgary Herald, I thought it was a joke, that maybe if they screened their passengers a little more closely in the first place, it would prevent any nuts from being allowed to board an airplane. After all, isn’t that what all this security business is about, keeping airplanes nut free? Turns out I was wrong, and the joke was on me. Air Canada wants to make places on its aircraft that are safe for people with peanut allergies. They would like to ban peanuts, just as cigarettes have been banned. What next, alcoholic beverages? Why fly at all except for all the inconvenience and fooforah you’re put through to get on a plane. The wait and the procedures at the terminal, (an appropriate term) can be interminable, longer sometimes than the time one actually spends in the air. Today it seems we are trying to protect every one from every thing, in the process driving us into a state of whackiness. Nut free zones on airplanes. If they weren’t so serious about it, it would be laughable. Correct that. Because they are so serious about it, it’s laughable, nay, nutty. (I understand that peanut allergies can be very dangerous, and I am not making mock of the allergy or those who live with it).

Sarah Palin has a best selling book, her memoirs, entitled Going Rogue. Stephen Harper has done her one better by going Prorogue. A best seller? Does anybody really care that Parliament is not in session? Has anybody taken notice? Has there been a change in your life? For those who watch CPAC, (the television channel that shows the day to day goings on in the House of Commons), what is it doing, showing re-runs? There is no Question Period, no exchange of “pleasantries” between MPs on opposite sides, nothing going on in the House of Commons, and yet the country has not fallen apart. That is a tribute either to Stephen Harper or to the average working Canadian. I’m giving it to Harper. The man is one of the most skillful political tacticians to come along in quite some time. Political pundits and analysts have predicted the end of his minority government almost from its beginning, yet here he is, stronger than ever, even in the midst of a major economic slowdown. Stephen Harper knows how to give people exactly what they want. If he and his party could govern from home, just as a lot of other people work out of their houses, I’m sure he would try to do it. Save Parliament for those special occasions, like hosting the President of the United States, or receiving the Queen, or standing for one minute of Silence on Remembrance Day, stuff like that. Of course if Mr. Harper and all those other guys and gals we hired, (elected), to work for us, chose to suspend work for a month or so, perhaps we taxpayers ought to think pretty hard about suspending their wages for a month or more. It’s only fair, one suspension deserves another.

Ever been ambushed by someone with a camera? The first shot is usually candid, you’re not ready for it, and so you protest, “Oh no, please don’t do that”. Then they want to shoot another one. You still protest of course, but your ego kind of steps in, you smile, suck in your gut, stick out your chest, trying for all the world to look shy, peeved and stunning all at once. The one taking the pictures assures you that you look wonderful, and with that little stroke of 03s the ego, you believe it, and you feel wonderful.
