Mr. G. has his day

Wednesday, January 23 was “Mr. G. Day” at St. Anthony’s School. Last year Mr. Gregorash, or “Mr. G.” as he is known at the school, announced he would be resigning as principal early in the new year. On Wednesday, students dressed in school colours or as Mr. Gregorash, and in the afternoon he was surprised by an assembly in his honour. Mrs. Maloney’s class members couldn’t help but give Mr. G. one last hug. inSide photo by Patrick Kolafa

Institution placed on lockdown Michael James | inSide Drumheller

The Drumheller Institution was put in a state of lockdown earlier this week following a series of assaults. For the time being, visitation has been affected. On January 21 at

roughly 12:15 p.m., the medium-security federal penitentiary was placed on lockdown to facilitate the search of the institution. During the search, five inmates were found to have been assaulted. Injuries were sustained, but are not considered serious.

The Institution remains closed and will reopen when officials consider it safe. “The safety and security of our institutions is the primary consideration of the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC). The institution will reopen as soon as the

search is complete and it is determined safe to do so,” said Dawn Bancroft, chief administrative services for Correctional Service Canada, via press release. Visitation to the Institution has been affected and anyone who had previously scheduled a visit

are asked to contact the institution. “In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary,” said Bancroft.

Football fans will remember the tassels of hair dangling above his number 33 Titans jersey as he raced into the end zone. Hockey fans can see the sweaty, matted mullet when the Raptor peels off his helmet when he leaves the ice. Cuts for Cancer will remember it for the good that it does those fighting cancer. Spencer Fournier’s mullet is a source of pride, even if the style itself is two decades passed its due date. Nonetheless, he has put it on the chopping block for this year’s Cuts for Cancer. The Grade 11 student will be going under the scissors on February 3 to raise funds for the Drumheller Area Health Foundation to support those with cancer. A few of his teammates are also pledging to lose their manes for a good cause. Spencer says he was inspired because cancer has affected his family. In fact, his grandmother has fought the battle with cancer twice. This is the eighth year for Cuts for Cancer and it has raised thousands of dollars to be used locally for those in the community and their families as they battled cancer. Others putting their hair on the chopping block include Jo Jensen, Kevin Lee and Walter Albrecht, who has participated ev-

They have a goal of raising $30,000 this year, and while the have had a jump-start from a barbecue and a Christmas Party, they are still hoping for a momentous effort to put them over the top. This year’s event is in dedication of Krista Boyko. Well known and respected, the 41-yearold Drumhellerite passed away last fall after being diagnosed with cancer in the spring. Boyko worked at WHIFS for 17 years, and the restaurant is doing their part. The staff will be donating their tips on the day to Cuts for Cancer in memory of Boyko. On New Year’s Eve, the Badlands Community Facility was filled with roughly 200 people, young and old, for Drumheller’s New Year’s Eve Centennial Celebration.

“It was a great. Everyone had a good time, the food was good, and the band was good,” said Shoff. The children were having fun in the field house and the adults upstairs in the banquet hall for most of the night, but the two came together to share in some fireworks launched from the hills across from the facility. The sounds of fireworks could be heard all through Drumheller on New Year’s Eve, heralding the official start to Drumheller’s centennial year. The New Year’s Eve party was only the first of a year’s worth of events celebrating Drumheller’s centennial. Planning for the official 100th anniversary of the day Drumheller was incorporated, May 15, is already underway. However, plans are currently in their infancy. “We [the Centennial Committee] know we’re going to have a meal of some type. Up until now, we’ve been focusing on New Year’s. Our hope is to get as many people as we can to come out,” said Sharel Shoff, Chair of the Committee. “We’ll have more information later, because we’re going to keep the centennial going.” One event being considered is a repeat of the New Year’s Eve centennial celebration. “I’d like to see another one. Chips with Salsa a little spicy

but always welcome

by C. Aiello

What were the chances? The San Francisco 49er’s, coached by Jim Harbaugh, going to the Super Bowl to play Baltimore Ravens, coached by his look-a-like brother, John. It was enough that they were both coaching teams in the playos, on the same Sunday, but now to be coaching on the same Sunday, in the same city, on the same ďŹ eld, facing each other. What were the odds of that happening? Entertainment wise, the Super Bowl offers something for everyone. There’s the game of course, but there is always a top of the line half time show, and the ads that come on during breaks in the game are always memorable. Some of them are hard to ďŹ gure: For example: A middle age man walks out of his house, and sits down on the front step, beside his teenage son. He dangles a set of keys in front of the kid, and says, “I think it’s time.â€? The kids eyes light up. “Really?â€? “Yup.â€? says the dad, and the camera pans toward the driveway, where sits a classic 1968 hunter green Mustang Fastback. The kid runs to the car, and the dad gets up and walks calmly back into the house. Then comes the voice over, “Cialis, ask your doctor.â€? Okay, who can tell me what was being advertised? If you said a drug for erectile dysfunction, then you and I weren’t watching the ad in the same way. I mean, who would know from the ad, that a man suered from erectile dysfunction? Clearly the man suers from some sort of mental dysfunction, and the ad should be for the American Psychiatric Association. After all, what sane father would turn over the keys to a 1968 classic Mustang to his 16-year-old son, and then calmly walk back into the house? Not likely, and Cialis isn’t the solution to that type of dysfunction. Call your doctor. Want to know how ination works? Let me give you a simple example: Last Sunday, as I was coming out of church, there stood at the door, one of the members of the Knights of Columbus. In his hand was a large glass jar, marked “Pennies from Heavenâ€?. It’s one of the Knight’s charities, and as parishioners leave the church, they are asked to drop whatever change they may have, into the jar. The fellow I happened to be walking beside, turned and asked, “What are you going to do when there are no more pennies?â€? “They’re phasing them out you know.â€? “What are you going to do, start asking for nickels?â€? “I don’t want to be around when they start asking for dimes.â€? That’s how ination works. Sneaky, ain’t it?

SPORTS St. Anthony’s Sabres continue building young team inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

The St. Anthony’s girls Sabres were back in action after returning from the holidays. Although they lost, they showed they were growing as a team, especially during their tournament over the weekend.

On Wednesday, January 9, the Sabres hosted the Trochu Blue Jays, and suffered a tough 49-15 defeat. Trochu took the lead quickly in the first quarter and kept a firm hold throughout. The Sabres had difficulty with turnovers and rebounds throughout the game. The Sabres began to

rally late in the fourth and were able to generate some offensive opportunities. However, Trochu held on for the win. “We have been working a lot on rebounding, as we do not have a lot of height on our team, and we have lost two power forwards to injuries. This has meant that we have had to move around some of our players into new positions, where they have had to adjust to quickly,” said head coach Chloe Grant. The Sabres then hosted their own tournament on the weekend of January 11 and 12 at St. Anthony’s School. Their first game was against Morrin, who played an aggressive game against the young Sabres squad. “We had a small bench of only seven players, two of which had recently joined our team and had little knowledge of our plays, so we had to really simplify our offense,” said Grant. Their second game was against Forestburg, who eventually went on to place first in the tournament overall. Forestburg only had five players, but moved the ball and knew how to take advantage of the Sabres’ small size.

“They would often pull up their power forward to the high post, and either do a give and go with the point guard, or their power forward would drive to the hoop,” said Grant. The Sabres final and best game was against Bassano. Unfortunately they lost, but they showed considerable growth as a team. “Their communication with each other on the floor was much better, and the captain of our team, Bailey Faubion, had a definite presence on the court. Her energy and encouragement to the rest of the team kept the girl’s intensity levels high throughout the whole game. Our defense was also very strong in this game, and our offense improved dramatically,” said Grant.

Dragon named Player of the Week Michael James | inSide Drumheller Another Dragon is being recognized by the AJHL. Mitchell Gartner joins fellow Dragon Ryan Bloom as one of the Canalta Players of the Week. Between January 13 and 19, Gartner earned four goals and eight points in four games. He scored the game winning goals versus the Calgary Mustangs on January 14 and the Camrose Kodiaks on January 18. In addition, Gartner was named the Pro Hockey Life Player of the Game on January 14, 18, and 19. This is Gartner’s first season with the Dragons and third in the AJHL. So far this season, he is third among the Dragons point leaders and fifth among AJHL defencemen. In addition to the impressive statistics he’s been racking up, Gartner brings much more the table.

The Sabres returned to the court on January 16 to face a strong Three Hills squad. The Sabres were severely outmanned, only having a six player team, which was enough for only one sub when players got tired. The Three Hills teams, in contrast, had enough players to fill two full lines. In the end, the tired Sa-

bres couldn’t keep up with the comparatively wellrested Three Hills team and lost 66-15. The Sabres have a break this week due to provincial exams and will return to the court on January 30 when they host Prairie Christian Academy. The game starts at 5:15 p.m. in the St. Anthony’s School gymnasium.

“He put up a lot of points in only a few games. He certainly is very deserving of it. I’ve coached Mitchell for a few years. He brings an element to the game we certainly need,” said Brian Curran, head coach and general manager of the Dragons. “He brings

things to the table other than points. He has an attitude on the ice we need. He plays with no fear.” Teammate Ryan Bloom was the first Dragon to be selected for the Player of the Week award, earning the title for the week of December 10.

Penalties kill Dragons in loss against Eagles Michael James | inSide Drumheller

Penalties proved the bane of the Dragons on Wednesday night when they took on the Canmore Eagles. The Dragons were defeated by a devastating 5-1. In the ďŹ rst period, the Dragons seemed to have the upper hand oensively, out-shooting the Eagles 11-5. Both teams went scoreless in the ďŹ rst, though the Dragons missed several close opportunities in front of the Eagles’ net. Emotions were running high in both teams, with several heated encounters between players during stoppages in play. The ďŹ rst half of the second continued much as the ďŹ rst period had, but a string of penalties in the latter half of the period proved to be the Dragons downfall. Junior Dynos have strong start to season Submitted | inSide Drumheller

The DVSS Junior High A team is having a strong season and look forward to even better results. Recently, the Dynos took on Three Hills, and went away with 60-25. “We have had a great year so far, said head coach Al Molzan, who says the players are

working hard and working together. The Dynos are now 4-0 in league play, and have played two tournaments, with a combined tournament record of four wins and two losses. The two losses were against bigger, stronger teams than the Dynos. Molzan says hopefully they were able to learn something from those games.

They Dynos have ďŹ ve returning players, who are providing great leadership, and are coming together well as a team. The DVSS team has two more tournaments, and four more league games to play before they go to league playos and then on to zones at Strathcona Tweedsmuir by Okotoks in the ďŹ rst weekend of March.
