Aeration works by forcing the water to move constantly so manganese won’t build up. Alberta Environment has also been encouraging municipalities to stop using chemicals in the water. The colouration wasn’t seen at the water treatment plant, as summer’s high temperatures and prolonged contact time with the chlorine caused the water to become darker as it travelled along water lines. “The aeration equipment is going to save us money on chemicals, and by having a natural process, there is no chemical action/ reaction,” says Director of Infrastructure Services Allan Kendrick. The SolarBee units utilize solar power
and can be put in place over winter months with very little maintenance cost throughout the year. Manganese levels have dropped off to ideal levels since late November and December as temperature is a key factor in its development. “Right now, the manganese is not a problem. It starts to occur with warmer temperatures in the water,” said Kendrick, adding it shouldn’t be a problem until late April. “This should work,” says Kendrick. “Hopefully council will approve our 2011 budget – they looked at it in a positive light (at the meeting).”

Friday, January 28 at 11:00 am, the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s Speaker Series will continue with Jack Tseng from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, who will present a talk entitled “Tyrants of the Cenozoic: Evolution of Bone-Crushing Hyaenas and Dogsâ€?. Tseng was born in Taiwan, and grew up in San Jose, California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Integrative Biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently ďŹ nishing his Ph.D. at the University of Southern

More manes are coming to light as this year’s Cuts 4 Cancer nears. The sixth annual event, in memory of Cathy Morse’s mother, is slated for Thursday, February 3. This year’s event is dedicated to Adeline McKay and Morse’s father Vern Schinnour, who passed away last year. The funds raised by the event beneďŹ t local patients through funding the Drumheller Area Health Foundation. Organizers have set a ambitious goal of raising $30,000 in the one-day hair-cutting blitz, and they have their fair share of heads of hair to make it. inSide Drumheller reported in November that the Drumheller senior Titans have signed on to have their locks shorn for the cause. That is about 30 haircuts alone. As the event draws near, there are a number of other residents who have stepped forward to support the event. Morse told inSide Drumheller that Terry Stoppler account manager for Chinook Credit Union will be in the hot seat. He fells strongly about the cause as his brother passed away from Leukemia. Morse has set a bounty of at least $1,000 on his hair. Shawn McKay has also put his hair up to be cut down. He is the son of Adeline McKay. Dave Graham has also stepped

More head of head step up for Cuts 4 Cancer
California. In the context of his Ph.D. thesis, Tseng spent a year studying fossil carnivores (meat-eating mammals) at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing, funded by the US Fulbright Program. Tseng will speak about the evolution of two distinct groups of carnivores, hyaenas and borophagine dogs (an extinct lineage, closely related to the modern dog family) that lived between 34 and 3 million years ago. Many borophagine dogs evolved features similar to those of hyaenas, earning them the nickname “bone-cracking dogs�. Jack will discuss these adaptations. Here are a couple dishes you might like to serve during Super Bowl- sure to score you some points! Being different from typical potato skins, these have the pulp mashed and stacked back onto them, which makes it a much heartier snack.
Fiesta-Stuffed Potato Skins
Serves 4 Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes 4 medium baking potatoes (about 2 pounds), unpeeled and baked 1/2 cup sliced green onions 1 package (5.2 oz.) Boursin Cheese - Garlic & Fine Herbs Suggested toppings: crisp-cooked crumbled bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, chopped green chilies Preheat oven to 425°F. Slice potato lengthwise into 4 wedges. Scoop pulp from each, leaving just enough along the skin to keep it firm. Mash in bowl and add 1/4 cup green onions and Boursin, then mix in. Equally spoon potato filling onto potato skins. On baking sheet, arrange potatoes, then sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup green onions, and any garnish you choose (cheese, bacon bits, etc.) Bake uncovered 15 minutes or until heated through.
Serve with sour cream for dipping. *Instead of bacon bits, try cooked, crumbled ground beef or Italian sausage. *Boursin is found in the deli section. It has a very unique flavor and texture which is what makes these a different tasting potato skin. Alternately, this was the original recipe. I think it would be better as a side dish because it seems quite filling for an appetizer or snack. It would be served as a baked, stuffed potato. Cut a lengthwise slice from top of each potato. Remove skin from top slice and place pulp in medium bowl. Scoop pulp from each potato, leaving 1/4-inch-thick shells; add to bowl. Continue to prepare and bake as above. You might like to serve nachos along with this. A favorite way to prepare them is to place a layer of taco chips in a baking dish, pour some barbecue sauce over, then top with grated cheddar cheese (or a blend of cheddar/mozza, monterey jack, etc.). Repeat this layer one more time. Cook in the oven with the potato skins just until the cheese is melted. Or microwave a couple minutes, checking to see the cheese is just melted. You don’t want to over-cook them. Now, invite some friends over, put on the game and enjoy some yummy snacks! 4m

The Drumheller Mail announced in its December 8 edition the Encana Atom Raptors were planning a memorial hockey game to retire the jersey of teammate John Charmont, who tragically passed away in a hotel explosion in Mexico, and to unveil a third custom designed jersey in dedication to their teammate. Calgary Radio Station CJ92 has joined the project supporting the custom jersey. “This is much more than a hockey game, it’s a hockey celebration that coincides with the CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada as

Residents of Drumheller and area showed great support for the most recent blood donor clinic. The clinic was held on January 18 at the Stampede Barn, and Canadian Blood Services collected 151 donations. This is enough to save or improve up to three lives, the potential to help more than 450 patients. One issue that Canadian Blood Services ran into at this clinic was unaccounted cancellations. One in four donors who made appointments did not honour that commitment. Canadian Blood Services simply asks if a donor is not able to make their set appointment, to call 1888-2DONATE (236-6283) to cancel. The next blood donor clinic will be on Monday, May 2 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling the above number. Healthy people can donate blood every 56 days from the age of 17. More information on eligibility to give blood can be found at www.blood.ca or by calling Canadian Blood Services.

The stand off ended on Wednesday afternoon as a press release from Ski the Badlands put an end to any hope of skiing in Drumheller this season. The Town of Drumheller set a deadline of 5 p.m. Wednesday for the Drumheller Ski Club to accept its lease offer, or it would be rescinded. About 25 minutes before the deadline, Ski the Badlands issued a statement saying they would not sign the lease. “Jointly, Drumheller Valley Ski Club (1997) and Badlands Ski Hill Ltd. are announcing that the terms of the so called “lease” from the town are not acceptable and have decided to reject it as it stands,” said the release signed by Zrinko Amerl. The statement goes on to say the lease document had many ‘new conditions and hidden agendas not acceptable and not common in any lease.’ One includes the request of the town to remove a caveat place on the property by Badlands Ski Hill. The Town also asked that the Ski Club file copies of all documentation which accompanied its application to Corporate registries for re-instatement. These include the entire bylaws agreed upon by Ski Club for reinstatement; names of directors, shareholders and officers, and the purpose or purposes for which reinstatement was desired. The statement also expressed that it is troubling the town insists on the immediate removal of ski hill assets off its land. The Town of Drumheller owns the portion of land that roughly includes from the second tower up. “Once we start removing lifts, snowmaking and buildings off the lands, there will be no way of getting those assets back in place,” said the statement. Mayor Terry Yemen said there was no such order for the Drumheller Valley Ski Club. “We never told them anything to do with their assets… we told him, his company, that if the lease isn’t signed, he was to vacate the property,” said Yemen. “As far as the assets, I have, nor has the town seen any indication that those are his assets.” According to the statement released by Amerl, ski passes from the 2010-2011 season will be honoured in the 2011-2012 season. If negotiations to open the hill next season fail, ski hill assets will be sold off and passes will be reimbursed in full. While there may be a next season, chances are it will not be with Badlands Ski Hill Ltd. Yemen expressed that the town has no interest in working with Badlands Ski Hill Ltd. in the future. “Because of all the circumstances it is not the town’s intent to follow up with a sales agreement with the town land and Badlands Ski Hill,” said Yemen.

A woman in Drumheller received an 18 month suspended sentence for assault, assaulting a peace officer with intent to resist and uttering threats. Kelly Boutin represented
herself in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday, January 21. She entered three guilty pleas stemming back to incidents on September 26 of last year. Drumheller RCMP were called to a residence responding to a complaint of
an assault. When police arrived, Boutin had been restrained by others in the residence. She was visibly upset and when police attempted to take her into custody, she resisted. She also admitted to uttering
a threat. She admitted that alcohol was involved on the evening in question. The prosecutor acting in the case recommended a suspended sentence of two years with a probation order and a no contact order with the victim named
in the ordeal. Judge Grieve suspended the passing of sentence for 18 months, with conditions of abstinence from alcohol and counselling as directed. There is also a weapons prohibition.
The court heard how on August 15 of last year, RCMP, during a routine patrol, noticed a group of people standing outside a bar. When they approached, they noticed a person place a black bag under a motor vehicle. A search of the bag revealed marijuana, a scale and a bundle of cash, as well as a book that contained names and phone num-
bers. Burgess took responsibility for the bag. When he was searched, police found another small quantity of marijuana and some cocaine. Federal prosecutor Colin Kloot alleged there was 60 grams of marijuana and less than a gram of cocaine seized. Defense for Burgess, Gary Wood told the court
Burgess admits to a serious cocaine problem and was selling the marijuana to feed his habit. At the time of his arrest, he had no previous record. Wood requested a presentence be completed before passing sentence. Kloot countered that a presentence report would be unnecessary as the primary sentencing principle for a drug charge is deterrence
and denunciation. Judge Grieve sentenced Burgess to 60 days in custody, followed by one year of probation. He received a fine of $500 for the possession charges.

The St. Anthony’s Saints junior high girls basketball team has been playing a busy schedule that will help them as they continue to improve their skills. Last week the Saints played Hanna. Although the lost, they were ready to play in a tournament in Hanna over the weekend. In their first game of tournament play on Friday, they were victorious over Delia. This was an exciting win for the team as they lost to the squad in a previous game. This put them up against Trochu on Saturday, but they were unable to notch the win. The tournament ended for the Saints with a loss to DVSS. The basketball hasn’t stopped for the team as Monday afternoon after school the team hosted the Morrin Mustangs, and were able to pull away in a 26-24 nail biter. Coach for the Saints Greg Peters said he is coaching a very young team with a number of the players playing for the first time. The squad has Grade 7 and Grade 8 players. “We have no Grade 9 play-
ers,” said Peters. “There is a big jump between strength and coordination between Grades 7 and 9.” Despite this, the players are developing their skills and
knowledge of the game, and Peters says if they are able to keep the squad intact, they will continue to grow and he believes they will have more successes in the future.

Every team has a good chance to take the championship. “Canada is one of the greatest curling countries in the world, so you can’t expect to have an easy game at nationals.” “As the week goes on, you see who’s going to be on a roll for a week. You can’t tell before you go.” For now, school is priority for the team, but Clark assures the nerves will probably set in before they lace up. “We’re just excited to get our first game under our belts and see where we’re at.” The finals will be broadcast on TSN on February 6.
