Parallel parking best option says mayor Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

Mayor Bryce Nimmo says even if the issue of parking is reopened, there are not many options available to the town to make any more changes. On November 9 of last year, Drumheller Town Council passed the controversial parking changes that have paved the way for angle parking to be replaced with parallel parking on 3rd Avenue. Recently concerned downtown merchants launched a campaign to pressure council to reverse its decision. Mayor Nimmo says there are not too many options left for council. “There always is the possibility (to reopen it), but what I say is ‘what are you going to do?’” he said. “This de inSi

As a past owner of a business in Drumheller, Laval’s Fashions, which operates where currently The Salvation Army operates, we would like to share the following opinions with regards to the current discussions about parallel parking vs diagonal parking. I was on the committee that fought long and hard to get rid of the parallel parking. When we first began to operate, we were under the parallel system. We therefore were operating when Drumheller opted to diagonal park. The diagonal parking added a great deal to our operation. We regret that council is suggesting that we return to the “old” “inefficient” parallel system. Obviously, for many years now, the streets have been wide enough for the diagonal parking and the

is the best solution we have.” He says, despite what some say, there was more traffic congestion this summer after the bridge changes were made. While he concedes the worst case scenario of travel trailers and campers bottle necking the core were not realized, there were more issues. “All you need to see is people trying to back out of stalls, people lined up to the Napier Theatre trying to go west, and when you are driving down the street and don’t know if someone is going to be backing out at you, that is what I’m saying,” said Nimmo. He says the changes were part of the negotiation for amalgamation years ago. Because the province has jurisdiction over the highways, and made the deci-

sion to change the bridge, it has affected the traffic flow. “We have just gone up in traffic. We came up with a decision that not everyone is happy with, but I think in the end it will move the traffic,” said Nimmo. Some local businesses have hinted that if the changes stand, they could relocate. He says businesses need to adapt to the new reality rather than pulling up stakes. “Don’t play the game with the card you wish you were dealt, play the game with the cards you have, and play it the best you can,” he said. “Moving to another table isn’t necessarily going to be a lot better than where you are sitting.” “I don’t see an exodus, hopefully I just see innovations.”

merchants and most of the public want it to stay diagonal. We have had many poor decisions made to the traffic flow in the downtown area. We hope the current Mayor and Council will listen to the merchants and general public and not compound the problem. The downtown stores are working very hard to maintain the downtown core and do not need the loss of storefront parking that this issue will generate. It will directly effect the viability of their businesses. The issue could directly cause businesses to close and I think Council should think about that before any changes are made to the parking.

It’s disappointing to us, the overwhelming majority of businesses, to say the least, that we did not get our third meeting with the Town that was promised from the Spring 2009 meeting, only to find out the Mayor and Councillors, on November 9, 2009 decided to implement parallel parking as of the May Long Weekend 2010. This will cause a 60% loss of parking on 3rd Avenue, will require a higher degree of driving skills, longer time spent negotiating parking space, and cause a loss of customers, and the increased risk of vehicle accidents. This problem has been compounded by taking the angle parking away from the customers which we, as merchants, need in order to keep our businesses viable; which in turn helps us pay our bills, employees, business licences and property taxes. We would sincerely request that Town Council reconsider their decision with regards to angle parking. We would like to thank all those who have responded

Music Festival to celebrate Groundhog Day marks fourth release volunteer commitment for Hedo Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

This year the Drumheller and District Music Festival is marking is 80th anniversary, and is recognizing the importance of volunteers and their role in making the music festival a reality. The festival, which has 80 years of history in the valley, will stage its 70th this year starting on March 15, and culminating at its final concert on Friday, March 26. This season however was on the brink, in desperate need of volunteers. At last year’s final concert it was announced the music festival would be taking a year off due to lack of volunteers on the committee. The community responded and new blood and life was injected into the organization. That being said, there is always room for more support in a volunteer capacity. Doug Wade of the committee says while they typically have many come out to help man the venues during the festival and performances, they are

in need of volunteers in the weeks and months leading up to the festival. The committee meets every second Tuesday of the month at the Drumheller Civic Centre at 7:30 p.m. This year the committee is hosting Celebration 2010, an event to honour volunteers past and present that have given their time to the Drumheller and District Music Festival. The celebration is slated to be on Saturday, April 17 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Drumheller Civic Centre. Members of the Celebration 2010 Committee Doug Wade, Cathy Morse and Judy Campbell are looking for those interested in donating to the volunteer celebration (particularly wine makers).

Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller Groundhog Day is a chance to look into a crystal ball and make a short prediction of the future. It has also taken on a new meaning thanks to the famous Bill Murray movie of the same name…a chance to go back to the drawing board and get things right. Hedo has gotten things right. Hedo is, of course, the stage name of Fraser Ritchie, a local musician who has surpassed insurmountable odds and has produced his 4th album… aptly titled Groundhog Day. “Everyone can relate to how you can get into a routine, and trying to do something a little different to make it right,” said Ritchie. Ritchie has had a long career in the music industry. As part of the Electricks in the 1980’s, he had a taste of commercial success. He also worked as a studio musician, and even wrote jingles in Tinsel Town. A series of events brought him to Drumheller in 1999, and he established himself as a guitar teacher in the valley. Dozens of young people learned to love to create music through their hands thanks to Ritchie. Along the way, he released an album using the name Hedo. The music stopped briefly for Ritchie in 2004 when a neuromuscular disorder took away his hands. For a short time, he gave up music. Then in 2008 he called up Axe Music in Calgary. They knew who he was, and he explained to them what happened. He laughs when he says he could hear the empathy coming through the other line. To lose your hands is a guitarist’s worst nightmare, and they understood. Axe Music had

a solution and shipped him a Roland synthesizer. Today all his music from drum, bass and lead guitars are synthesized electronically. It is a learning curve. He has built tools to help him play chords on the keyboard that would normally be impossible in his condition. Through all of this, he has been efficient. He released Axe Free in 2008, and not long after that, he released Badlands Better Days. The money from these projects has gone towards funding neuromuscular disorders. He says the music he is producing today would sound the same if he were laying down the tracks playing traditional instruments. What has happened between Axe Free and Groundhog Day is he is getting things right. A sneak peak listen to Hedo’s latest release reveals a mastery of the tools he

uses, and maturity as a musician. From listening, it is impossible to decipher that he is not playing traditional instruments. “I don’t think it is a lot different than the other albums other than there is more variety. I have added more instruments other than guitar,” said Ritchie. “But it is still straight ahead, high energy, melodic rock.” He add as his condition continues to progress, he is unsure if this will be his last release. In keeping with the name Groundhog Day, he is releasing his album on February 2 and it will be on sale at Riverside Value Drug Mart, and Wave Electronics. The funds raised by the sale of the album will go to the University of Calgary medical department, for research towards preventing and curing neuromuscular disease.

a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

The two things of which I am writing today are related to the supermarket. One concerns something I purchased, and the other, something I made observation of. Last week I went to the IGA to pick up a few things that I had in short supply, or had run out of completely. One of those things was eggs. Pop and I use up about a dozen eggs a week, and when I last checked, there were only two left. I like a good sized egg, large or even better, extra large. When I looked over the selection, there were some cartons labelled “JUMBO”. That’s my kind of egg. I’ve bought them before, and they really are a very nice egg, so I grabbed a carton, picked up some other stuff and headed for the checkout. When I got to the checkout I stood behind another fellow who was stocking up on football watching goodies. I had time to peruse the magazines surrounding me. After so doing, one could make the determination that women are the only ones who buy magazines, and that the only things that interest them are losing weight, gaining that “bikini” body in just 30 days, whose marriage is falling apart, which Jen is pregnant, upset or planning to wed, and last but not least, how to get more, where to get more, how to enjoy, sex. As the majority of grocery shoppers are women, I suppose it only makes sense to bombard them from all sides with magazines pertaining to their alleged interests. I say “alleged” because I really don’t believe most women are all that interested in the things these magazines offer. Then again, I’m a man, what do I know? Back to the eggs. Last Sunday morning, after Pop had finished cooking the bacon, he called me to come cook the eggs (I get all the hard jobs). I pulled that carton of “JUMBO” eggs out of the fridge, removed five of them, and proceeded to break them into the pan. The first one had a double yolk. I exclaimed to Pop, “Look Pop, twins”. Breaking the next one produced the same result. “Look at that Pop, two in a row, what are the chances?” Turns out the chances were pretty good, as all five eggs contained double yolks. I thought I had set a record, or at least the chicken that laid them had. A little later in the week Pop used a couple of eggs to make dumplings or some such, and lo and behold, two more double yolks. Surely this carton of JUMBO eggs was an aberration. On Saturday, I was shopping again, and again needed eggs, and again took the JUMBO carton. The next morning, Sunday, I took out five eggs for breakfast. With Pop watching, I asked, “ How many doubles do you think I’ll get?’ He said two. I started breaking them. One double, two doubles, three doubles, four doubles, five doubles! Five double yolk eggs a week apart. You can see why I had to write this. I might have seen ten double yolk eggs in my lifetime, but to break ten into my frying pan, five at a time, seven days apart, well that’s just weird. Should it happen next week, I’m going to contact the people at Guinness. I’ve developed a bit of a cold of late. Nothing serious, just enough to block my nasal passages, hampering my breathing and keeping me awake at night. I get up, go to the bathroom and blow my nose. Usually very little happens except for the noise. I have a big nose and a corresponding big resonant chamber. If whatever I blew out of my nose corresponded to the noise I make when blowing, then I’d be sharing my bathroom with a small to medium sized pachyderm. Fortunately such is not the case, and I usually sleep soundly for the remainder of the night. 4m

Grant application submitted for John Anderson diamond replacement Pascale Taylor| Inside Drumheller

As construction work is underway for the Badlands Community Facility, and with the John Anderson Park diamond no longer useable, a location for its replacement is now being looked into and rebuilding the diamond situated in Rosedale has been proposed. With this in mind, the Town of Drumheller recently applied for a grant via the Municipal Sponsorship Program. If approved, the grant would be for $73,791. With capital cost estimated at $347,629 and expected inkind contributions of $137,717, an additional

funding of $136,121 will remain to be found. The project is therefore expected to be completed in phases, with further grants being obtained in 2010 and 2011. Originally, the town had proposed for a replacement diamond to be created at the Newcastle Recreation area, however, Al Kendrick, direction of Infrastructure Services explains, “the Rosedale diamond is not in the best condition now, we have done some work with it, it’s difficult to get people to use it...because of the condition it is in.” Kendrick also attributes the lack of use due to children getting involved into

different activities nowadays, such as soccer. He also believes the implicatons from council is that they want to have recreation facilities serving the easterly portion of the community as well as the west side of town. With the community hall and skating rink in close proximity to the diamond together with green areas and closeby campground, it is hoped that rebuilding the diamond may draw people to use it more. Although a new diamond at Newcastle Recreation Park is still an option and once the funding is secured, the logistics will be looked at again.

The Rosedale baseball diamond, pictured, may be upgraded to replace the John Anderson diamond. Decisions will be made if the grant application made via the Municipal Sponsorship Program is successful. inSide photo by Pascale Taylor

Kendrick is hoping to hear about the funding by the end of March, but warns the funding process can take longer so it may be that work will need to wait until

the fall to begin in order not to disturb it during the season when it will be utilized. If the funding doesn’t come through, Kendrick confirmed the diamond will be maintained as is.

The Drumheller Dragons would like to congratulate Sam Lawson on his recent verbal commitment to the University of Alaska Fairbanks for the 2012-13 season. Lawson, a 1993-born, 6’0”, 165 pound centre from Calgary, Alberta, recently entered his first season with the Dragons. Last season, Sam played for the Calgary Rangers in the Southern Alberta Midget League, where he and his teammates earned a bronze medal in the 2009 Sutter Cup. With his commitment to UAF, Lawson joins his Dragons Teammate, Justin Tateson, who has committed to the Nanooks for the 2011-12 season, as well as Dragons alumni Brandon and Dion Knelsen, who are currently in their senior years with the school. “I’m ecstatic,” comments Lawson. “The UAF Program is exactly what I was looking for as a studentathlete. The calibre of their academics, athletics and coaching are outstanding.

I feel very proud, fortunate and grateful for the opportunity to become a Nanook.” Dragons’ assistant coach and assistant director of Player Development, David Ferrari, adds, “The Dragons are extremely excited for Sam and his family. His growth this year as one of the few 16-year old players in the AJHL has been impressive. We’re proud that Sam is a Dragon and we’re excited to watch him continue to develop both with us and the Nanooks. This is just the beginning for him.”

New Year,

Make your New Year’s Resolution last, try lifestyle changes instead Pascale Taylor | Inside Drumheller The start of the new year is traditionally a time to reflect on the changes we want (or need) to make and resolve to follow through on those changes. Top New Year resolutions will include: • losing weight • becoming healthier • quitting smoking • bettering yourself • spending more time with family • reduce your debt • get more organized • have more fun. However, when the recent online poll on our website at www.drumhellermail.com asked whether readers had broken their resolutions yet, 75 per cent an-

swered they didn’t make one. Making New Year’s Resolutions can be daunting, “there is so much I want to change I wouldn’t know where to start!” and it also comes with a fear of failing. Making a lifestyle change may work better. Ask yourself what it is you want to change and why. Losing weight usually comes at the top of the list as not only it will make you healthier, you will also feel better about yourself right away. Exercise works on the part of the brain that determines what kind of mood you’re in. No matter how bad you feel when you start out, a good run, swim, bike ride, roller blade, or walk will cheer you up. If you’re already feeling good, you’ll feel even better.

Drumheller Curves announces its New Year's Resolution: help make one million women stronger in 2010

The only way to get a healthier body is by eating healthier and exercising more. There is no shortage of options in the valley to help you achieve this, all you need to do is find activities that you like the sound of and that will suit your lifestyle. You may need to learn a new skill in the process, which is even better as this will help with your personal development. Make it fun and make it enjoyable. Start a group with your friends and/or family to try new activities or try new ones on your own, it will be a sure way to get out and meet new people. See what you like and what you don’t, with all the options available, you are sure to find something that will suit your lifestyle. Being more active is very safe for most people. However, some people should check with their doctor before they start becoming much more physically active. So what are your options in the valley? Gyms seem the obvious places to start. However, a lot of people join gyms with the best of intentions but fail to carry on after a few weeks. Judy McIlroy, owner of Everybody’s Gym in Drumheller, recommends variety as she explains “boredom is the first reason not to keep at a new fitness regime. Try a variety of classes, set yourself different challenges. Another

A 30 minutes session there will get you a complete cardio and strength-training workout where you will be moving all the time. When you are on your way to becoming more active, you will need to make sure you also take time to look after your body. • Visit a chiropractor to help relieve any pain. • Have a massage to relax your muscles. • Have a spa to relax your body and mind. • Have a pedicure, manicure or facial. Heather Hamilton from Diosa Spa explains “having a manicure or pedicure is a great way to make you feel better as it is such an instant thing where you can tell straight away that they are better.” Once you have tried a few activities and found one or two you enjoy doing, time to think about eating healthier food. The average recommended daily allowance is 2,000 calories, but this depends on your age, sex, height, weight, and physical activity. • Eat a wider variety of foods. This is your opportunity to expand your range of choices by trying new foods, especially vegetables, whole grains, or fruits. Try to get fresh, local produce. Did you know the Drumheller

Man pleads guilty following fatal accident Patrick Kolafa l inSide Drumheller A man pleaded guilty in provincial court in Drumheller to dangerous driving following a roll-over accident in October of 2008. The accident claimed the life of Drumheller resident Jeremy Bael, 26. Lucas Mitchell of Vernon, BC, appeared in court on January 22

charged with a number of offenses including dangerous driving causing death. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving. The court heard how on October 22, shortly before midnight, Mitchell left the Newcastle Bar. He was the operator of a 2007 Ford Truck, and Bael was the passenger. The truck was travelling at a high rate of speed westbound on Newcastle Trail. When

it approached a bend in the road, the truck lost control and skidded off the road into the ditch. Still travelling at a high rate of speed in the ditch, the truck hit a tree, causing it to barrel roll several times. Mitchell was fined $2,000 for dangerous driving and was given a one year driving prohibition. He has not had a driver’s licence since the accident.

There’s a lot of excitement at Drumheller’s New Media and Animation (MAX) Campus and Badlands Animation Inc., they have secured top animator Rich McKain who is currently working for Pixar, as a guest speaker

MAX Campus... Drumheller’s New Media and Animation Campus

to do a free presentation at the Napier Theatre on February 8 between 10 am and noon. McKain, Calgary native, attended a college there which offered similar computer animation courses to the ones available at Max Campus, where you can learn and perfect skills in New Media, 2D and 3D animation. McKain is no stranger to MAX Campus as two of Max’s tudors studied with him. Angela Moreau, business manager and registrar for MAX told inSie Drumheller she hopes this presentation will raise awareness of what can be achieved studying new media and animation. McKain was an avid animation fan from an early age, he recalls first being drawn to the animated

film world after seeing Pixar’s short film Knick Knack and the studio’s first feature, Toy Story. McKain took drawing classes at the Alberta College of Art and Design and 2D animation classes at the QuickDraw Animation Society in Calgary. He then moved to the USA to pursue a career in the gaming industry, working for a few video game companies before joining Blue Sky Studios where he transitioned into animation in the film industry. There McKain contributed as an animator for Ice Age: The Meltdown and Blue Sky’s fourth full length feature film based on the Dr. Seuss classic Horton Hears a Who. In 2008 he joined Pixar Animation Studios, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, and contributed to the Cars Toon short films before working on Golden Globe's Best Animated Film 2009 Disney Pixar’s UP! McKain will be speaking about animation and its techniques, the making of Up! and will take questions from the audience. For anyone who is interested in animation, this is an event not to miss.

For more info… Rich McKain will present at the Napier Theatre on February 8 from 10 am to noon. For course information, contact MAX on 403-823MAX1 (6291) Or visit their website: www.maxcampus.ca

Inmate adds 2-1/2 years to sentence for involvement in beating Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

One of the five men charged in the beating of another inmate at the Drumheller Institution has been sentenced to a further two and a half years behind bars. Andre Nanooch appeared in provincial court in Drumheller on Friday; January 22 to be sentenced after pleading guilty to aggravated assault at a previous appearance. The Mail reported in its January 13 edition that four others charged in the beating of inmate Alfred Sayer were granted a stay of proceedings. The court heard how, on May 19, 2008, Nanooch, who was 20 at the time, had only served six months at the Drumheller Institution, entered the victims cell at about 4 p.m. Nanooch admitted, while it was his roll to keep look-out, he as-

saulted Sayer by delivering blows to his face. After Sayer fell to the floor, Nanooch admitted to kicking him. Sayer was discovered about 20 minutes later. STARS airlifted him to a Calgary hospital. He was in a coma for an extended period of time, but has since fully recovered. Nanooch admitted his involvement in the beating, and wrote a letter of apology to the victim’s mother.

Crown Prosecutor Ron Pederson recommended a sentence in the range of 2-1/2 to 4-1/2 years. Judge Grieve cited Nanooch’s age, his cooperation, confession and remorse as mitigating factors and sentenced Nanooch to 2-1/2 years in prison consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving. There was also an order for his DNA and a firearms prohibition after he is released from prison.

Scissors will be blazing at Cuts 4 Cancer Wednesday Patrick Kolafa | inSide Drumheller

This year’s Cuts 4 Cancer at the Chop Shop is coming up on February 3, and even though a number of supportive residents are going all out for the day collecting pledges, organizers stress you don’t have to go bald to give to the cause. Cuts 4 Cancer has given thousands of dollars to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation to support cancer patients. This year they are aiming at raising $20,000 at the one-day event. Tracy Gendron says the driver of the event is for people to come to the Chop Shop on Wednesday, February 3 and simply get a haircut anytime between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The funds from these haircuts will to go to the Drumheller Area Health Foundation to support a fund they keep to support those with cancer and their families to help them cope financially during their battle. Families can apply, for example, if their loved one is undergoing cancer treatment out of town and they are in need of support for some eligible expenses incurred. While the bread and butter of the event is donating the funds a person would usually pay for a haircut, there are some notable exceptions. This year, organizer Cathy Morse’s husband Rod is going under the razor, and is collecting pledges. Gendron says while the pace of pledges is brisk, they expect a flurry of activity come the day of the events. “It is going to be quite a surprise because we said the highest bidder will get the first swipe (at Rod) with the clippers, so I am thinking when he

comes in there is going to be a full shop and maybe a bidding war,” laughs Gendron. Another to look out for, says Gendron, is Walter Albrecht. The regular Passion Play volunteer player participated last year, and it looks like he is on track to bring a substantial contribution to the event. "He has come in for probably 10 pledge sheets already,” says Gendron. This year they are also hosting a raffle to raise funds for the cause. A Chop Shop supplier has donated almost $1,000 worth of product, and they are selling tickets on three different prize packages. The Cuts 4 Cancer has become a tradition in the val-

ley started by Cathy Morse in memory of her mother who passed away after a battle with cancer. Funds from previous events have gone to the Palliative Care Unit’s Bariatric room, and lounge at the Drumheller Health Centre, as well as the cancer unit.

* 1 Tbsp. butter * ½ cup chopped green pepper * 1 green onion, chopped * 1 block cream cheese * 1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce * 1 ½ tsp. Creole seasoning * ½ tsp. Chili powder * 1/8 tsp. Cayenne pepper * 3-4 drops Tabasco * 2 cans (6 ½ oz. each) lump crabmeat * 1 (5 oz.) pkg. frozen small cooked shrimp, thawed Melt butter and saute` pepper and onion for about 3 minutes. Set aside. Melt cream cheese over low heat. Add the pepper mixture and all seasonings. Stir in the crab and shrimp, cooking until heated through. Serve warm with chips, crackers or chunks of a baguette. I substituted one package of imitation crab for the canned because I like the chunky texture of it. I also used larger shrimps and chopped them. Either way, it is sure to be a hit! 4m

Jason Cox

Full Name: Jason Cox. Job: page at the Drumheller Library. How old are you: 18. How long have you been in Drumheller? Three and half years. Where are you originally from? I am originally from the UK. What do you like about your job? It’s nice and quiet. If you were granted three wishes from an angel or genie, what would they be? To have unlimited wishes, then I’d be good to go, I could have what I like as I go along! What’s your favourite movie and why? It has to be Blade Runner because it is directed by Ridley Scott. Who or what inspires you (and why)? My dad inpires me, he went from nothing to something. He wasn’t doing very well at school and right at the end of his year, he said ‘right, I’ve got to do what I have got to do’ and got the top marks in the Public school he was at, the best marks they had ever seen, and went on to being a marine engineer. So if he can do something from nothing, so can I. Who would you like most to meet? Probably author Tom Sharpe, just because it’s Tom Sharpe. I read he served in the Royal Marines, he’s got that serviceman’s wit. I’d like to meet

him just because of the way he writes, you can just tell he is a funny person in person. What would you like to achieve this year? Get through the digital media course I have started at Max Campus. Then it will allow me to go into some parts of the industry, anything to do with media because it teaches you anything to do with Photoshop, Illustrator, create websites, make photos look better, anything like that. What do you do to relax? Read a book, listen to music. If it is sunny outside, go and sit out on the deck. What is your favourite book/song? My favourite book is Tom Sharpe Wilt. I don’t have a favourite song,

anything by Pink Floyd Floyd. If money was no option what would you be doing? I’d like to live somewhere by the sea in New Zealand, be self sufficient, raise a goat farm or something. What’s on your playlist? Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, Radiohead, The Rolling Stones. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Probably New Zealand, but I am happy in Canada. If you found a $100 bill what would you do? It’s mine! Black or white? Black, it stands out. Words to live by? I am my own person.
