OPINION

Local youth recognized for volunteer work Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

Local youth Maria Patterson is being recognized for her volunteer work by an organization supporting Alberta participation in assisting international development. Patterson, 17, has been named in the 2014 Top 30 Under 30 Magazine for The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation. “I’m really excited, I’m just so overwhelmed with emotion.” “I’m grateful to be recognized at this level as well.” Drumheller Valley Senior Secondary School teacher Monica Lund nominated Patterson for the magazine’s award. Patterson said her and friend Madison Colberg started the local youth Rotary Interact Club, which is now almost into two years with at least 15 youth involved. She says the club is run by the youth, “We can tackle any initiative, or anything we personally feel needs to be addressed, we can do - we’re in charge of the club. It opens a lot of doors for different activities.” She says they’ve had a lot of support from the Rotary Club and businesses in the commu-

nity, and they were able to support the Morgan Jayne Project with a monetary donation. Patterson says she is passionate about both upholding human rights on an international level and helping others. Her next trip is to work at an orphanage in Nepal for two to three weeks, and the rest of the summer she’ll be working as it’s her last summer before university, she says. Patterson says she’s looking at an undergraduate program in International Development at the University of British Columbia, with an eye to eventually becoming a human rights lawyer. The Alberta Council for Global Cooperation describes itself as a coalition of voluntary sector organizations located in Alberta, working locally and globally to achieve sustainable human development. The magazine’s launch is February 1st in Edmonton and is cohosted by the University of Alberta’s Global Education Program. International Development Week this year will be February 2 to 8, and Canadians are encouraged to learn more about international development and to share their experiences with others.

TOWN OF DRUMHELLER

Sports, Recreation & Arts Expo.

Get your Winter Walking boots on Drumheller!

Wed. March 12th, 2014 Badlands Community Facility plays host to the Spring Sports, Recreation & Arts Expo on Wed. March 12th, 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. “Sports Expo” is an opportunity for residents and neighbours to learn about and register for the incredibly wide variety of activities, clubs and opportunities readily available in the Drumheller district, all under one roof in one evening!! Come on out - attend as an interested parent or participant, or - Register with us an Exhibitor whether you are new to the process or an established exhibitor over the past few years. More information or to Register?? Please call us at 403.823-1370, or contact us by e-mail at: LRowe@dinosaurvalley.com

Join thousands of Albertans on February 5th, 2014 for Winter Walk Day 2014. It is easy to participate, simply get outside and walk for at least 15 minutes at some point that day or take a few minutes out of your lunch to join us for a Community Walk starting at the Badlands Community Facility at 12:15 pm. We will relocate to the walking track in the facility if the weather is inclement. Hot chocolate will be served after the walk. Contact Rose at the Seniors Office at 403-823-1317 or email rpoulson@dinosaurvalley.com and include all minutes that you walked that day to add to the Town of Drumheller’s total. We are challenging the Town of Fort McLeod again this year, so we need your help!! Everyone is welcome...come on Drumheller, dress warmly, get outside, and enjoy the fresh, crisp Alberta air.

???DID YOU KNOW???

CANADA DAY IS COMING FAST! We invite local bands to apply to play at our big party again this year. Please contact Judy at 403-823-1324 or jarvidson@dinosaurvalley.com or Call Lyle at the Badlands Community Facility (403-823-1370) if you would like to help us celebrate.

Placement of C-Cans (sea cans) require a Development Permit application and approval. Also, these units are not permitted in any area zoned as a residential district, even for temporary placement during construction. Please contact the Development Authority for additional information. Cindy Woods, Development Officer Town of Drumheller | 403-823-1310

AND DID YOU ALSO KNOW??? that it is a town bylaw that all dogs and cats be registered. Please attend town hall and buy your dog and cat tags. If a pet wearing tags is lost and then found it makes it much easier to return it to the owner if it can readily be identified. Similarly if your dog or cat has been microchipped by a veterinarian bylaw members have the device to read microchip details and identify the owner. Microchipping has advantages over a dog or cat wearing tags or even tattooing as the chip will always be identifiable and the owner need not worry if your pet was not wearing its tag when it wandered off. Tattooing can be helpful but microchipping appears the most effective and durable method of pet identification. Please buy your registrations and do your utmost to ensure that your pet can be identified and returned to you in the event it gets lost. Any questions please call Greg Peters at the Community Enforcement and Bylaw office at 403-823-1363.

Drumheller RCMP warn of fraudulent power bill

WORKS

Submitted

| inSide Drumheller

As many ways there are to pay a bill, so are there as many way for someone dishonest to try and take your money from you. According to Drumheller RCMP, on January 9 of this year, a resident received a power bill via their computer. At first

Friday, January 31, 2014 - 5

glance, it appears very legitimate. Upon checking further, it was found to be fraudulent. What caused the person to question this bill initially was that she had just paid one. As she examined it further, it was noted it had been received on an old email account that had never been used for bill paying. This person attempted to contact the company at which point it was determined

the company did not exist. If this person had not recently paid a power bill, this one may have been paid. RCMP recommends residents review any bills they receive, especially if received or paid via your computer. Should you have any concerns please contact the Drumheller RCMP at 403-8237590.

Sudoku

Horoscopes

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
