CN corner beautification: Inside Out program starts phase 2 Pascale Taylor | inSide Drumheller

In the start of the new year, the Drumheller Institution Inside Out program, led by Trish Parker will be starting on phase 2 of the beautification of the CN Corner: painting of old coal mine scenes on four by eight feet canvasses at the Drumheller Stampede & Ag Society Barn. This project thus far has demonstrated a true community collaborative effort to improve the appearance of the town, and following its successful completion, there are plans to beautify other dilapidated areas around town with a view to make Drumheller a better place to live in. Last summer, Bob Sheddy started to raise community and businesses awareness of a run down area of town, known as the CN corner at the intersecTrish Parker, tion between 2nd Street West Inside Out program and highway 575, opposite Mac’s. His vision is to transform it into a usable space and provide a place for people to sit down and enjoy the area instead of it being an eyesore on one of the main access routes to Downtown. Ray Romanetz, CAO of the Town of Drumheller, contacted Parker and the Inside Out program for their help in clearing up the area. This project fit perfectly with the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program as its purpose is to “increase opportunities for men and women, inside and outside of prison, to have transformative learning experiences that emphasize collaboration and dialogue...” so Parker was happy to help. During discussions to check the options, Keith Russell, operations manager at the town, suggested murals and the idea came up to show coal mine scenes to remind people of Drumheller’s history, before it became known for dinosaurs. While browsing a disc of Drumheller past photos supplied by Image Crafter Signs, Parker saw one of the inside of a coal mine and had a vision of a three dimensional mural using the old tracks to continue on the theme of coal mining. Permission was then needed to be obtained from the Co-op, who leases the land, and CN, the land owner. Due to possible ground contamination and remedial work being carried out, it was agreed that anything added needed to be removable, and the murals will need to be approved to ensure they enhance the area. Once the project was approved by the Drumheller Institution, who will be supplying part of the materials, canvas, paint and brushes, Parker personally invited work release inmates who all accepted. She is looking forward to the project and hoping to be able to work with five or six Inside Out participants. Parker also enlisted the help of local artist Vicki Myers from Communities in Bloom, who will provide her time and expertise to get the project started and teach the inmates, who have no experience in this field. “I am so glad Vicki is on board! It’s a challenge for the boys”, explains Parker “but it is a great legacy for them to leave in Drumheller.” Although Myers has previously done a project of this kind working with special needs young people, she said, “I am looking forward to doing this project and working with adults, there are lots of challenges doing a project on this scale. We will be working with oil based paint and using black, white and grey colours so we will need to pick the right photos, it adds to the challenge. The location where the painting will take place is perfect too.” The Ag society is providing the ideal location for the painting to take place as the Stampede barn is large enough to accommodate the projection of the images on canvas. Working on the project two days a week, Parker anticipates the paintings will be ready to be mounted in the spring, which the

Town has offered to do to ensure they meet the appropriate standards. Doing the murals on canvas will also ensure they can be updated, changed or taken down as needs be. Aside from the murals, a “Welcome to Downtown” sign is also being prepared for the site by Image Crafter Signs, funded with a grant Communities in Bloom received from the Chamber of Commerce, and coordinated with the Downtown Drumheller Merchants Association. The project has so far received great support from local donors: Barcomp Industries Inc. donated money for rocks and landscaping supplies, The Drumheller Housing Authority helped with the weeding and mowing, the town donated money to provide picnic tables and garbage cans. Planters were bought by Canalta, Co-op and Western Financial Group. ATCO Electric has committed funds in its 2010 budget to gravel the parking lot on the east side of the planters. Talking about this project, Wilf Golbeck, ATCO district manager, explains: “as an active partner in the community, ATCO Electric is always pleased to support local efforts that not only help to beautify our Drumheller community but they also boost community pride and spirit so we are glad to be part of that.” More support is needed however. Parker is still looking for two old coal mine carts to display on the site to complete the three dimensional scene. One of the panels will also be made up of a collage of pictures of Drumheller in yesteryears so she is looking for photos of the old Drumheller, downtown or coal miners, anything that looked like Drumheller did in the 30s and 40s and ideally with names and details of who the people were so they can be recognized on the display. They urgently need five more plywood sheets for the canvas and ideally would like another three planters. If you can help with any of the outstanding items and be part of this beautification, please contact Trish Parker at 403-823-0129 or Bob Sheddy at 403-324-2222.

I was once told never to drink grapefruit juice with my medication. Does this mean I should take grapefruit juice and medication separately, or not take grapefruit at all? H.P Grapefruit juice interferes with the metabolism of many medications. Talk to your pharmacist to see if any medications you are currently taking interact with grapefruit juice. If they do, it is best to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice altogether.

Q:

My close friend is about 3 months pregnant and having the worst case of morning sickness I have ever seen. Is there anything that she could take that would help without harming the baby? M.G

A:

There are some medications that are totally safe in pregnancy. Diclectin is commonly prescribed and works quite well. Ginger can be used as a herbal supplement. There are also Preggie-drops and B-natal pops and lozenges which are safe and natural. Sea bands which are a non-drug product work on pressure points. For the most part, after about 3 months the morning sickness usually does ease up to an extent. Please talk to your doctor before trying any medication.

a little spicy but always welcome

by C. Aiello

I was going through some old notes and scribblings from about 1986. It dates from the time I served as editor of a service club (which shall go unnamed), bulletin. It’s sometimes difficult to get the attention of a bunch of middle-aged and younger men, but I believe my opener in said bulletin did the trick. It might be considered politically incorrect, but for the time I wrote it, the hot selling poster of the day was Loni Anderson in a two-piece bathing suit, where today it’s Pamela Anderson in her birthday suit. Times change, but the last names remain the same. Here it is; What is the attraction of the naked female form? What is it that can hold the attention of a grown man so strongly and for so long that little else matters? Is it the wondrous curves and flowing lines, or the vast amount of soft, smooth, exfoliated skin? Perhaps different parts of the female anatomy. No, that’s silly. If it were so, then museums and art galleries would be inundated by rampant males trampling one another for a look at some centuries old statue or painting. Maybe it’s the way the body is moved. Yes, that’s it! Why else would grown men sit around for an hour watching a lady take her clothes off? It is not the naked female per se which is the attraction, but the manner in which said female proceeds to bare herself. Yes, that is the mystery solved. How about it, did I get your attention? Good, because now the fun part begins. I know it’s a few days, make that a couple of weeks ago, but does anyone remember Copenhagen? You know, the capital of Denmark, home of the Little Mermaid? Oh yeah, and the site of the last “Last Best Chance to Save the Planet Convention,” or the International Convention on Climate Change. What a huge sham. The greatest redistribution of wealth since Bernie Madoff made off. I’m a denier of the anthropogenic theory of global warming. I am a skeptic of global warming. What I mean is that I don’t believe man is causing global warming to any great degree, any more than I believe man could cause global cooling to any great degree. Second, I am skeptical there is warming at all. I will of course be castigated for saying such things, and I will be told that the science is all in. Hogwash, the science is never all in. Allow me: In the early 1500’s, the earth was flat and the sun revolved around it. The science was all in. In the late 1800’s, early 1900’s, the gas powered vehicle was thought of as a fun diversion, but could never, would never do the work of a horse. The science was all in. In the mid 1800’s, consideration was given to closing the U.S. patent office because, “everything had already been invented.” In other words, the science was all in. In all this climate business, no one seems to acknowledge what is referred to as “the 800 pound gorilla in the room”. The ape’s name is Great Ice Age and I don’t feel comfortable ignoring it. No scientist, at least not one that I have heard or read, addresses the question. What human activity so warmed the earth’s atmosphere as to melt 5,000 foot thick, continent covering ice sheets? I would really like to know. I mean why have none of the “science is all in” guys ever explained how or what melted these glaciers? Why has no one asked them for an explanation? Will someone please drop an 800 pound gorilla on David Suzuki’s head. And, if you can find another one that size, drop it on Al Gore’s doorstep. The science is all in. What nonsense. 01s

Christmas wishes granted in Roatan Patrick Kolafa | Inside Drumheller

After a string of what seemed impossibilities, Christmas came to the Island of Roatan. A titanic effort was made by the community to make sure the children and the families served by Familias Saluables, the organization that administers the Morgan Jayne Project, would be able to celebrate Christmas. This effort delivered, and Fred Makowecki who founded the Morgan Jayne Project sent inSide Drumheller a recap of the Christmas party from Valerie Nelson. He adds the same process will be repeated in many poorer areas where the families could not come to the party. From Valerie Nelson “The party started at 1 p.m. Here we talk about “island time” meaning everyone is late for every event, in fact we really hadn’t planned any activities until 2 p.m., as that’s when we expected the first guests to arrive. At 11:30, an hour and a half early, the first guests arrived, Eric and his mom from East End, within half an hour almost all the guests were there, early and eagerly anticipating the party. The children were dressed in their very best clothes, hair carefully braided, this was a time for celebration. This

has become the highlight of the year and the most eagerly awaited event. We had teen volunteers do crafts with the kids, beaded necklaces (bought with your funds in Teguc). We then had the children play games in the yard as the parents met and had an open discussion on some of the problems of discrimination, overpriced testing and difficulty with medications they face on a daily basis. Even though this is a Christmas party it has become an important tool for everyone there to recognize they are persons living with AIDS, raising children, many whom are also living with AIDS. One of the fathers went to pick up the pre-ordered fried chicken dinners, a local treat most of our families cannot afford. The kids and adults were excited and very happy with their food, paid for by the Morgan Jayne Project. French fries were gobbled down with tons of ketchup; chicken savored and often wrapped up to take home for another day when there may not be any food. Soon the kids began whispering “Donde (where is)

Santa?”… then came the magic moment, Santa came in all his glory, velvet suit and jingling bells. All the children flocked to him and at 115 children we made them sit down so Santa was not mobbed. One by one he handed out their presents, each gift specially chosen for them, paid for by people unknown to them thousands of miles away. They opened their bags, some of them so excited they actually bit through the bags, not patient enough to untie them. They and their parents went through their bags; cries of “Bonita” (beautiful) and “Gracias Santa” were so numerous I didn’t know where to turn. Eric, six years old, tugged on my dress and handed me his bag. I thought at first there was a problem (did we accidentally mix him up with Erica?) but he quietly, shyly, asked me to see his toys. As I sat down and pulled out one after the other with him he exclaimed how each one was perfect. Eric has been very sick this year and he is quite frail and not a healthy looking child. His ears stick out of a too thin face and his clothes hang on him. At that moment his eyes shone at that moment

AgChoices 2010 Conference Wednesday, February 10 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Capri Centre, Red Deer, AB

and his face could not be more beautiful as he hugged me and whispered “thank you, thank you” in my ear. I looked up to see his mom looking at me with tears in her eyes. At that moment I wished I could send you that hug as you deserved it, that joy he, and all the other children experienced was so tangible, so amazingly powerful I thought surely you must be able to feel it thousands of

miles away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, from Eric’s heart, from his mother’s heart, from Carlos, Sharika and Kristoff and all our other children. The presents were beautiful and you brought joy to so many children at Christmas. "Whatever else your Christmas is this year you are blessed, as you have sent love to a child. Thank you!"

Our book club wasn’t able to coordinate our schedule this month, so we will be discussing two books next month. Lori Stefanishion I have three books to recommend that I read over the inSide Drumheller holidays. Book Columnist The Àrst one is “Precious” based on the novel “Push”by Sapphire. I heard the movie was very intense and emotional, as is the book. The language and content are quite harsh, but one has to remember that life isn’t a bed of roses for everyone and such terrible things do happen. There is promise showing how one can overcome so many obstacles in life when they have enough ambition and dedication. Also Ànding a purpose and appreciation for oneself is a key factor. Along the same lines, Theoron Fleury’s book, “Playing with Fire” shows how he beat the odds as well. He totally ruined his life but managed to come out of it with self worth and a value. One part I found most profound was when he described the day he went to the arena early the day of the Stanley Cup. He describes the feeling sitting up in the stands and said that if he could always feel that way, he would never have turned to drugs and alcohol. This book is hard to put down, even if you aren’t a big hockey fan. The third book I quite enjoyed was a lot lighter. It is “La’s Orchestra Saves the World” by Alexander McCall Smith - the author of the Number 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. He always had interesting characters and a nice story. This one takes place in England covering the lifespan of the main character, Lavender, “La” who moves to the country and starts up a little orchestra to boost everyone’s spirits during the war. There’s nothing like cozying up to the Àre with a good book on a cold, snowy winter’s day. The only thing better would be cozying up on a beach chair away from the cold and snow! But, a good book is a great escape no matter where you are.

inSideSPORTS Yavis Raptors T3 split pair on road Submitted | Inside Drumheller

Redemption The St. Anthony’s Sabres were able to pull away from Prairie Christian Academy last Tuesday night for their first win of the season. Even more impressive was the Sabres were able to pull out the win after receiving a 41 point drubbing from Prairie earlier this season. It was a grind out game, and Prairie was able to cut the lead to five points, but clutch defensive stops and free throws helped the Sabres past Prairie. Matt Russell goes up for a lay-up in the Victory. The Sabres are hosting eight teams at its invitational tournament this weekend at St. Anthony’s School.

It was time to work off the holiday turkey as the Raptors were on the road this past weekend to Vulcan and Beiseker. The bench was short with a few absent players the Raptors needed their “A” game to compete. The Vulcan Hawks were the first opponent. The Raptors put in a total team effort as they out skated the Hawks for 60 minutes. It certainly was an offensive outburst as the Raptors scored 12 times. Leading the way was “The Snowman” as he rolled his way up and down the ice with four goals and one assist. Bradyn “The Cruncher” Crone had his breakout game as he scored his first two goals of the season and added one helper. After a small adjustment

in the first period and only down 2-1. The “Big E” was up to his ears in rubber but met the challenge and helped the team escape the 1st period. Kevin “Knuckles” Schrock and Sean “the Sniper” Michalevich were making things happen on the ice again but the puck just wouldn’t stay on their stick long enough to finish it off. Again the defence looked good as “Wild Bill” found some extra jump in his legs and out skated many opponents to the puck. “Hard Knox” Hummel was playing a good game as he kept traffic clear in front of his goaltender. The Blazers wore the Raptos down and scored a few quick goals at the end of the 2nd and that would be enough. The Raptors were not able to come back in the 3rd losing 6-1.

of sorts, Nathan Waiboer was able to add three goals of his own to help the offensive totals. Adding to the point totals was also Zach “Attack” Suntjens two goals and three assists and Haylea Crone with her usual determination was rewarded with one goal. Not on the scoring sheet, but big efforts from the defence this weekend as they pinched well on the boards and hustled back to break up many plays. The Big D led by Tyler “Hard Knox” Hummel, “Wild Bill” McDougald and Tanner “The Tank” Boutin kept the team in the game. It was bright and early for the second game as we started at 8 am in Beiseker against the Blazers. Again great hustle from all the players. We would have to dig deep to stay in the game as we were out shot 18 - 5

Police are looking for assistance to help solve a number of brazen robberies in the McConkey Park area, and are warning residents to be vigilant with their personal safety walking at night. The most recent event happened to a lone female on New Year’s Day. In the early hours of January 1, 2010 a lone female was walking on 3rd Avenue West near McConkey Park. She was attacked by a group of approximately six unknown individuals. The attackers took her money and other items of value. They left her with several injuries prior to fleeing from the area. In the past few months police report there have been three similar incidents that have occurred in the same area. Drumheller RCMP are requesting that persons walking in this area at night be cautious, and report any suspicious actions. Police ask that if anyone has information on these matters are asked to call the Drumheller RCMP detachment at 403-8237590.
