New license plates for Albertans

inSide STREETERS

Michele Scott | inSide Drumheller

The Alberta Government is removing “Wild Rose Country from Alberta’s vehicle license plates. inSide Drumheller asks: “What’s your opinion of the removal? Can you think of a new slogan?

Cody Glydon “It’s time for something new. Maybe.. “Spirit of the West?

inSide Drumheller | inSideDrumheller.com

The Alberta government wants Albertans to vote for the province’s new license plate.

The province is asking Albertans to vote and choose a new license plate. The plate selected for the province will be the one plate out of the three choices presented that receives the highest number of votes. “I know Albertans will enjoy having a say on what their new provincial license plate will look like, said Premier Dave Hancock. The Premier said the natural beauty of the province is on display in all three designs. Along with the newly de-

signed plate, Albertans will also get a ďŹ ve dollar price increase. The province says the extra money will cover the costs of producing and implementing the new plate. Service Alberta Minister Doug GriďŹƒths said the current Alberta plate is over 30 years old, and the new features on the redesigned plate will help make the roads safer. The province said the new plate will sport a reective coating that makes the plate easier to see under low light conditions, and will make it easier to read by infrared equipment.

Spokesman Kathleen Range said Alberta is the only jurisdiction in North America that doesn’t have a reective coating on its license plates. The province said it will begin issuing the new license plates in the Spring

of 2015. To cast a vote for the new plate, visit the page on the province’s website at http://alberta.ca/licenceplate-survey.cfm. The online survey is open from July 8 to August 19.

William Ford was shocked to discover his $5 lottery ticket won $250,000 on the EXTRA! His WESTERN 649 ticket for the May 28th draw matched all seven EXTRA digits to win the add-on game’s top prize! “I first checked the numbers online. I looked back and forth from the ticket to the computer for about 30 minutes, William said. The next day he went back to the store where he had bought the ticket -Drumheller Co-op- to check the ticket with his daughter. “I asked her to scan it on the self-checker, he said. “I was too nervous! In addition to winning the top prize on EXTRA, he also won $10 on a WESTERN 649 selection for that same draw date. William plans to share his lucky windfall with his family. submitted

Council donates pay to support Badlands Community Facility Drumheller’s Mayor and Town Council are donating some of their Town pay to the Badlands Community Facility. The group is supporting the BCF in the form of payroll deductions, with each member of the group contributing from their Town pay cheques. The contribution is $20 per month each from the Mayor and the six Town Councillors for one year. This works out to a more than $3500.00 donation from Town Council. “This is leading by example,” said Councillor Jay Garbutt. A 2014 remuneration committee recommended earlier this year to increase pay to the Mayor and Council, retroactive to January 2013, and Garbutt said he thinks it is important for the committee

to know that any increases for elected officials are sometimes controversial, “So I am pleased that this donation reflects giving back for the betterment of the community.”

“I am pleased this donation reflects giving back for the betterment of the community.”

Councillor Garbutt wonders if this donation could be a model for other work places, as it may not be financially uncomfortable for employees to donate the twenty dollars per cheque, and as a group, the collective donation amount would move fund raising forward more significantly. Councillor Garbutt said he and the May-

or had spoken briefly about revisiting the payroll deductions idea after last fall’s elections, as the previous Town Council had discussed the idea. Garbutt said Council intends to revisit this donations program annually, and Councillors could decide to continue with the deductions for the remainder of their Council terms.

“As a group, this amounts to a more meaningful pledge because of the total,” he adds. “Basically, it’s rechanneling Council’s increase into the Badlands fundraising committee,” said Mayor Terry Yemen. Mayor Yemen said these contributions would be over and above what any Council members have already personally pledged to BCF fundraising efforts.

"The Drumheller & District Humane Society has two separate litters, each eight weeks old, with a total of 10 playful and loving kittens that are ready for their new homes. If you had a vacation to go on right now, what would it be? Disney World. My boys, Eric, 1, and Mathew, 3, would love it there. Favourite things to do with the kids? Well, with my kids we love the pool right now. Also, getting out of the house and travelling to different destinations is always enjoyable with them. What about your day care kids? Crafts. We do crafts everyday and they’re so much fun. Today we’re doing water tables in the art room with corn starch- it’s a mess but the kids love it. Any hobbies? Just the regular camping and fishing with the family. If you could have a super power, what would it be? Invisibility would be great. The fun you could have... My children are here. It’s a really great way to be a part of their lives while still maintaining an income. Why do you love it there so much? Well.. It’s fun! You play all day but you also learn a lot. It’s helped me in my personal life. How long have you lived in Drumheller? It’s a long story. in with fresh produce in the grocery store). If you have fresh mint in your garden, use about 1/2 cup chopped. Mix in about 1 cup each of cooked quinoa, chopped cucumber, chopped tomato, chick peas and ½ cup chopped red onion. For the dressing whisk ½ cup lemon juice with ¼ cup olive oil. Mix in 3 cloves of crushed garlic, salt and pepper to taste. Sometimes, I serve it with crumbled feta cheese sprinkled over top. This is a very refreshing dish in the summer, but equally delicious year-round.

Passion Play, has been listening to the feedback from critics and decided to extend the show times based on the comments. “We did this because we wanted to meet the requests of the people who watch us,” says Neudorf, “We also wanted to extend past the Calgary Stampede in order to bring in more demographics from around Alberta. It’s an experiment, so we’ll see how it goes.” Since it’s inception, over 250,000 people have witnessed the Passion Play, making it the biggest production in North America. Though the three hour show may seem like a stretch, producers promise the play is worth it and the time goes by quickly. “There are different reasons to see the show. Sometimes it’s because it’s part of their faith, a part of the fabric of who they are. But the experience really comes alive.” Neudorf explains. “The time will go by quickly. As you’re following along, there’s so much stuff going on. It keeps you captivated.”

Throughout summertime, drumhellertourism.com will be looking for visitors to the valley and sharing their stories with inSide readers.

Ottawa, Ontario Who are you? Alain Hallee. Where are you from? Visiting from Ottawa, Ontario. How did you find out about Drumheller? We are actually visiting my son in Red Deer and he suggested we go sight seeing around here. We’re on vacation and haven’t ever been here before, so we thought why not? What’s on your tour list today? Our plan is to go to the museum, and then tomorrow the provincial park and whatever we happen to find in between the two!

What do you enjoy most about Drumheller? The landscape. It’s so unique. You can’t find this anywhere else in Canada. If we visited Ottawa, what would you suggest we see? There’s so much to see since there’s a lot of money put into the capital, and we suggest you see everything you can. Go to Parliament Hill and visit the museums. If you go in winter, you can have to go skating on the Rideau Canal- it’s the word’s longest skateway and has the best beaver tails.

The Drumheller Valley is a unique, scenic valley, created by millions of years of erosion by wind and water. About 65 million years ago, dinosaurs roamed the hot tropical swamps and forests that covered this area. Today, the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs can be seen in museums all over the world, and the lush vegetation exists as coal seams throughout the area. The Valley was first inhabited by Thomas Greentree, who, in 1902, built his homestead on what is now the Town of Drumheller. The Greentree House became a stop-over place for early pioneers coming into the district. It was Sam Drumheller who first exploited rich coal

reserves in the area and conceived the idea of a townsite in the Valley. Jesse Gouge opened the first coal mine in 1911. In 1913, the Calgary-Drumheller railway line was opened and the coal industry boomed. More than 40 mines were soon operating in the Valley. Mining towns like Nacmine (short for North American Collieries Mine), Midlandvale, Rosedale, East Coulee, Wayne, and Newcastle developed notorious reputations as highrolling boomtowns with bootlegging and gambling. When gas and oil were discovered in other parts of Alberta, the importance of coal diminished and the economy of the Valley turned to other things.

MAKE IT, BAKE IT, GROW IT! Jeff Epp of Hussar enjoys driving this 1984 Austin Mini he brought to Cruisin’ the Dub Thursday night. He had purchased the car a few years ago for his son, who stopped driving it because it kept running out of gas - the tank holds only 7 gallons of fuel. The car is a manual right hand drive, with 49,000 original miles on it. Jeff said everything’s original on the vehicle, and although he hasn’t made any modifications yet, he’s looking at putting in an Offenhauser manifold with dual carbs, or a 1,000 cc Yamaha street bike engine. Sudoku Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. A two day experience, Motorcycle Madness, is a weekend adventure for any motorcycle enthusiasts hoping to show off, burn out, or check in. Motorcycle Madness has changed venues for it’s 11th year. Instead of having the events on Centre Street Drumheller, the community of Wayne will be hosting for the motorcycle themed fun. Kicking off the event on the evening of Friday July 11th, the cyclists will attend a meet and greet at Drumheller’s Yavis’ Lounge. Afterwards, they will head out on a ride to East Coulee for the annual steak supper. On the following Saturday morning, the day’s activities will start in Wayne near the Last Chance Saloon. The Show and Shine will be first, and any interested in entering their bikes in the contest are encouraged

to participate in the fun. Judges are lined up and prize money awaits the winners. Throughout the rest of the day there will be various ongoing activities. Organizers urge motorcyclists to come to Wayne to enjoy the fun; go for a slow race, a joust, burnout in the pit, or take part in the wienie bite! Terry Kuhl, an organizer of Motorcycle Madness, is especially looking forward to this event. “I like all of it. There isn’t really one part of it that I like better than the other,” Kuhl says. “The Show and Shine is always nice. Every year you get a different group of people, so you get different bikes and so it’s always unique. I look forward to that. I look forward to people coming out of town and hooking up with the locals who come on an annual basis. I enjoy the rides.. it’s all fun.” Any money collected through volunteers, activity fees, and donations around town is awarded in two ways: contest winners for the various activities will receive cash prizes. The remainder of the money is donated to a choice charity. Over

the years, the money raised from this event has ranged up to $2,500. “We do the event for two reasons. We promote motorcycle tourism in Drumheller, and we also want to give some money to a needed charity,” says
